The results of modern auxological investigations are discussed in the light of previous research, first in the context of the works and ideas of the great Russian anthropologist Professor Victor V. Bunak (1891-1979). Bunak was the founding father of modern anthropology in Russia, or rather the second, after his tutor Dmitry N. Anuchin, Director of the Institute of Anthropology, Lomonosov Moscow State University. The main emphasis is on research into secular changes as one of the key auxological issues. The study of the influences of socioeconomic factors is also of great importance, these being major sources of secular variations in growth. In recent years, as was shown by the researchers of the Auxology Department of the Institute of Anthropology, Lomonosov Moscow State University, secular changes revealed a trend towards obesity in Russian children and adolescents, and ongoing social stratification in Russian society. 388 children in the age from 6 to 17 years (183 boys and 205 girls), living in two rural districts of Abkhazia, were investigated cross-sectionally in 2004. The program included about 30 anthropometric measurements, the evaluation of the developmental stages of secondary sexual characteristics, information on the menarcheal age by status quo and retrospective methods. Information on the child's and the parents' birth place, parental occupation and education, as well as the number of children per family was collected by the questionnaire. The results were compared with the data obtained by N. Miklashevskaya and colleagues in 1979-1981 as a part of the "Abkhazian longevity" project (Miklashevskaya et al., 1982). In both generations children and adolescents from the same villages were measured: the Chlou village of the Ochamchirsky district (rayon) and the Duripsh village of the Gudautsky district (rayon). The two investigations were separated by a very dramatic set of political and socio-economic changes, which took place in the Republic of Abkhazia, including the end of the Soviet era and the 1992-1993 war between Abkhazia and Georgia. The analysis reveals that the stature, weight and the BMI of prepubertal children (8 to 11 in girls and 8 to 12 in boys) does not demonstrate any significant changes, while the modern generation of teenagers shows an increase in the above mentioned characteristics. The differences are statistically significant. This trend is typical both for the children from different villages and for the combined sample. For body diameters (shoulder and pelvic width) there are no significant changes in the whole age range. Skinfold thickness and body fat content (kg and %) also increased in the modern generation of pubertal children. Possible explanations of the results are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The positive changes in hygienic living conditions are commonly believed to explain secular changes in body height and the age of maturity. However, it is difficult to estimate the separate impacts of these factors due to the lack of social and economic data and variations in the sources of information. We hypothesized that final male body height could be associated with various socioeconomic indicators, such as the development of the medical care system, the quality of nutrition, and the level of sanitary and hygienic conditions. Moreover, we hypothesized that male body height could be associated with the level of morbidity in the region during the time of conscript childhood (from 1 to 7 years old)., Materials and Methods: We used two main sources of information in the analyses. The first is the data from the Statistical Reference Book published by the Central Statistical Committee in 1929. The second is the annual data from the Statistical Reference Book published in the Russian Empire. Since the conscripts were born between 1906 and 1909, we used datasets from 1910 to 1913. To analyze the data, we used a method of analyzing interacting variables called St. Nicolas House Analysis (SNHA)., Results: Our analyses revealed direct associations between the morbidity of some diseases and male body height and other anthropometric parameters., Conclusions: There are associations between conscript final body height and the morbidity of influenza, dysentery and some venereal diseases, such as chancroid and syphilis. There were no associations between conscript final body height and the level of morbidity during childhood. However, other final parameters, such as BMI, weight, and chest circumference, could be associated with the morbidity of malaria, scabies, scurvy, and scarlet fever during childhood. Background: An accumulating body of research suggests that an accelerating enhanced recovery after colon surgery protocol is beneficial for patients, however, to obtain these effects, adherence to all elements of the protocol is important. The implementation of complex interventions, such as the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocol (ERAS), and their strict adherence have proven to be difficult. The same challenges can be expected in the implementation of the accelerated Enhanced Recovery Pathways (ERPs). This study aimed to understand the perspectives of both healthcare professionals (HCPs) and patients on the locally studied acCelerated enHanced recovery After SurgEry (CHASE) protocol., Methods: For this mixed-method study, HCPs who provided CHASE care and patients who received CHASE care were recruited using purposive sampling. Ethical approval was obtained by the Medical Ethical Committee of the Zuyderland Medical Centre (NL71804.096.19, METCZ20190130, October 2022). Semi-structured, in-depth, one-on-one interviews were conducted with HCPs (n = 13) and patients (n = 11). The interviews consisted of a qualitative and quantitative part, the protocol evaluation and the Measurement Instrument or Determinant of Innovations-structured questionnaire. We explored the perspectives, barriers, and facilitators of the CHASE protocol implementation. The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim and analysed independently by two researchers using direct content analysis., Results: The results showed that overall, HCPs support the implementation of the CHASE protocol. The enablers were easy access to the protocol, the relevance of the intervention, and thorough patient education. Some of the reported barriers included the difficulty of recognizing CHASE patients, the need for regular feedback, and the updates on the implementation progress. Most patients were enthusiastic about early discharge after surgery and expressed satisfaction with the care they received. On the other hand, the patients sometimes received different information from different HCPs, considered the information to be too extensive and few experienced some discomfort with CHASE care., Conclusion: Bringing CHASE care into practice was challenging and required adaptation from HCPs. The experiences of HCPs showed that the protocol can be improved further, and the mostly positive experiences of patients are a motivation for this improvement. Background: We investigated average body height in the central provinces of the Russian empire in the middle of XIX century in view of the concept of "community effects on height". We analyzed body height correlations between neighboring districts at this time. We added information about secular changes in body height during the 19 th century of this territory. Material and methods: The study used height data of conscripts, which were born in the years 1853-1863, and age 21 at the time of measurement. The territory of seven provinces was considered as a network with 105 nodes, each node representing one district with information on average male body height. In order to define neighboring districts three different approaches were used: based on the "common borders" method, based on Euclidean distances (from 60 to 120 km), based on real road connections. Results: Small but significant correlation coefficients were observed between 1 st order districts in the network based on Euclidean distance of 100 km (r = 0.256, p -value = 0.006) and based on "the common borders" approach (r = 0.25, p -value = 0.02). Wherein no significant correlations were observed in the network based on road connections and between second order neighbors regardless of the method. Conclusion: Height correlation coefficients between 1st order neighboring districts observed in the Russian districts were very similar to values observed in the Polish study (r = 0.24). The considered Russian territory and the territory of Poland have a lot in common. They consist of both plains without mountains. In contradistinction to Poland the transport infrastructure in Russia was weakly developed in the middle of XIX century. In addition, the mobility of people was limited by serfdom. In this context the absent of significant correlation of second order neighbors can be explained by low population density and lack of migration and communication between the districts.

Background: Normal weight obesity in children has been associated with excessive body fat, lower bone density and decreased total lean mass. However, no studies have been done into whether normal weight obese children differ in skeletal robustness or lean mass development on the extremities from normal weight non-obese, overweight, and obese peers although these are important indicators of healthy development of children. Methods: Body height, body weight, BMI, four skinfolds, and two limb circumferences were assessed. We calculated total body fat using Slaughter's equations, the Frame index for skeletal robustness and muscle area for the upper arm and calf using Rolland-Cachera equations. Using national references of BMI and measured skinfolds, three subgroups of participants (9-12 years) consisting of 210 middle-school-aged children (M-age = 11.01 ± 1.05)-110 girls and 100 boys-were selected: (A) overweight obese (OWOB) ( n = 72); (B) normal weight obese (NWO) ( n = 69); and, (C) normal weight non-obese (NWNO) ( n = 69). All values, were converted to Z-scores to take account of participant's sex and age. Results: NWO children had significantly poorer skeletal robustness on lower extremities and poorer muscle area on the upper arm and calf compared to NWNO counterparts with significantly higher evidence in boys-skeletal robustness NWO boys: Z-score = -0.85; NWO girls: Z-score = -0.43; lean mass on the calf: NWO boys Z-score = -1.34; NWO girls: Z-score = -0.85. The highest skeletal robustness-but not muscle area on the calf-was detected in OWOB children. Conclusions: Further research should focus on whether this poor skeletal and lean mass development: (1) is a consequence of insufficient physical activity regimes; (2) affects physical fitness of NWO children and could contribute to a higher prevalence of health problems in them. We have highlighted the importance of the development of a simple identification of NWO children to be used by pediatricians.

Abstract: Background: In our modern world, the way of life in nutritional and activity behaviour has changed. As a consequence, parallel trends of an epidemic of overweight and a decline in external skeletal robusticity are observed in children and adolescents. Aim: We aim to develop reference centiles for external skeletal robusticity of European girls and boys aged 0 to 18 years using the Frame Index as an indicator and identify population specific age-related patterns. Methods: We analysed cross-sectional & longitudinal data on body height and elbow breadth of boys and girls from Europe (0-18 years, n = 41.679), India (7-18 years, n = 3.297) and South Africa (3-18 years, n = 4.346). As an indicator of external skeletal robusticity Frame Index after Frisancho (1990) was used. We developed centiles for boys and girls using the LMS-method and its extension. Results: Boys have greater external skeletal robusticity than girls. Whereas in girls Frame Index decreases continuously during growth, an increase of Frame Index from 12 to 16 years in European boys can be observed. Indian and South African boys are almost similar in Frame Index to European boys. In girls, the pattern is slightly different. Whereas South African girls are similar to European girls, Indian girls show a lesser external skeletal robusticity. Conclusion: Accurate references for external skeletal robusticity are needed to evaluate if skeletal development is adequate per age. They should be used to monitor effects of changes in way of life and physical activity levels in children and adolescents to avoid negative health outcomes like osteoporosis and arthrosis.

Twenty-two scientists met at Krobielowice, Poland, to discuss the impact of the social environment, spatial proximity, migration, poverty, but also psychological factors such as body perception and satisfaction, and social stressors such as elite sports, and teenage pregnancies, on child and adolescent growth. The data analysis included linear mixed effects models with different random effects, Monte Carlo analyses, and network simulations.
