1. Novel magnetic Ni-N-Ni centers in N-substituted NiO

Abstract

Following the concept of creating individual centers, we investigate local electronic states and magnetic ordering in nickel oxide (NiO) induced by substituting oxygen (O) with nitrogen (N). Each N introduces an additional N 2p hole and alters the state of the magnetic moment at a neighboring nickel (Ni) cation site, as the exchange interaction between this hole and the Ni eg electrons dominates the superexchange interaction. This leads to the formation of Ni-N-Ni units consisting of five spins that are decoupled from the rest of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) NiO lattice and exhibit degenerate spin states. These centers are studied using density functional theory and confirmed through high-resolution spectroscopy measurements on N-substituted NiO thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. This type of magnetic design could potentially advance quantum technologies based on strongly correlated materials, such as quantum sensors and spin-qubits., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures. Abstract

The discovery of graphene led to a burst in search for 2D materials originating from layered atomic crystals coupled by van der Waals force. While bulk bismuth crystals share this layered crystal structure, unlike other group V members of the periodic table, its interlayer bonds are stronger such that traditional mechanical cleavage and exfoliation techniques have shown to be inefficient. In this work, we present a novel mechanical cleavage method for exfoliating bismuth by utilizing the stress concentration effect induced by micro-trench SiO2 structures. As a result, the exfoliated bismuth flakes can achieve thicknesses down to the sub-10 nm range which are analyzed by AFM and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract

Realizing experimental control of superconductivity is of paramount importance to advancing both basic research and technological applications. Disorder, generally existing in most superconductors, intricately interacts with Cooper pairs and also impacts the performance of quantum devices. In this paper, we report the study of a series of Ti(O,N) crystalline films prepared via molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). We discover that substituting nitrogen (N) for oxygen (O) in TiO, namely TiO(N), considerably increases the normal-state conductivity and the superconducting transition temperature Tc. The Tc of TiO(N) falling between those of TiO (about 0.5 K) and TiN (about 6 K) is contrary to their comparable Tc predicted by the Migdal Eliasberg theory. It is found that their resistivity vs temperature obeys the Mooij rule, known as the characteristic of metallic glasses. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that strong disorder severely scatters the Bloch electron waves at nonzero momenta, which consequently weakens electron-phonon coupling in TiO(N).

Abstract

As the parent compound of a promising solid electrolyte material Li3xLa2/3−xTiO3, the perovskite La2/3TiO3 has potential for advancing research on Li-intercalated ionic conductors. Epitaxial La2/3TiO3 films have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy using a growth process consisting of deposition and annealing cycles, with in situ monitoring by electron diffraction. X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirms the tetravalent state of Ti in La2/3TiO3, and the as-grown films are insulating. X-ray diffraction reveals the presence of half-order peaks, indicating a doubling of the pseudocubic perovskite unit cell due to the ordering of La vacancies in alternating A-site layers. These results demonstrate that single-phase, vacancy-ordered epitaxial films of La2/3TiO3 can be stabilized with excellent crystalline and electronic properties over wafer-sized areas, making possible Li-ion intercalation studies in films with well-defined domain boundary properties. Such boundaries are known to profoundly influence Li-ion conduction within the material. Understanding the effects of domain boundaries on Li-ion conduction could lead to improvements in solid-state battery technology and pave the way for the development of more efficient and safer energy storage devices. Abstract

The study of interaction mechanisms at the nanoscale between nanomaterials and microbial cells is of great importance in a wide range of research fields from health to the environment. In the latter case, due to the high occurrence of nanoparticulate systems in the environment, in-depth investigation of nanoparticle/bacteria interactions at the nanoscale is needed to better understand the full picture of natural, chemical and biological processes of the microbial biodegradation of natural or manufactured organic nanoparticles in ecosystems. In this paper, we highlight for the first time the proof of the biodegradation process of gelatin adsorbed on the surface of nanoparticles by Alteromonas macleodiiextracellular proteases. Using model core–shell gold@silica@gelatin nanoparticles, the biodegradation process has been demonstrated through a novel combined multi-technique approach using mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS, LC-ESI-MS/MS, SP-ICP-MS), photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron microscopy (SEM, TEM).

Abstract

International audience; The coupling of a combined atomic and molecular (CAM) ionization source, the liquid samplingatmospheric pressure glow discharge (LS-APGD) microplasma to an Orbitrap Fusion Lumos Tribrid 1M mass spectrometer is described as a significant step towards the elimination of isobaric interferences in elemental/isotopic mass spectrometry. The developed setup permits broadband, elemental mass spectra to be easily acquired at a mass resolution (m/Dm) of 500 000. A new ion source housing and integrated control system provide enhanced stability and sensitivity of the microplasma ion source in comparison to the previous designs. Detailed evaluation of the ion sampling parameters provided insight into differences with other Orbitrap platforms leading to a 5-fold increase in resolution in elemental/isotopic analysis. The roles of data acquisition/ion processing parameters were evaluated with regards to the precision and accuracy of 235 U/ 238 U isotope ratios. Significantly, the precision of those measurements improves as a function of pre-set mass resolution up to a value of 1 000 000, where a precision of 0.086% RSD is obtained for uranium concentrations of 100 ng mL À1. Analytical response curves (loglog), acquired for the two uranium isotopes at a resolution of 120 000 were linear (R 2 ¼ 0.9969) over more than 5 orders of magnitude, with limits of detection of 1 pg mL À1 for U. Based on 60 mL injection volumes, this represents a mass of 70 fg 235 U. These figures of merit satisfy International Target Values (ITVs) for Measurement Uncertainties in Safeguarding Nuclear Materials set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Ultimately, and totally unique from beam-type instruments, the move to the higher-resolution Orbitrap platform provides all of the benefits of high mass resolution, with no penalties in sensitivity, precision, or dynamic range for uranium analysis.

Abstract

International audience; The chapter, after summarizing the state-of-the art for selenium analysis and selenium status of different aliments, describes an analytical procedure that was developed for the quantitative recovery of selenomethionine (SeMet) and selenocysteine (SeCys) from foodstuffs of animal origin. It points out all the crucial steps of raw sample treatment and gives the details of all the steps that had to be optimized to achieve efficient protein extraction (protein unfolding/denaturation by urea) and ensure lack of losses (carbamidomethylation of the aminoacid residues using iodoacetamide) due to Se-compound degradation. The seleno-aminoacids were specifically determined by ion-paring reversed-phase HPLC-ICP MS and quantified by the method of standard addition after proteolysis followed by their isolation from the postreaction mixture by size-exclusion LC. In addition, formal identification by ESI MS/MS was carried out for compounds for which standards are not commercially available. Determination and quantification of separate selenoamino acids gives us information about specific or nonspecific incorporation of selenium into proteins.

Abstract

Eating out has been linked to the current obesity epidemic, but the evaluation of the extent to which out of home (OH) dietary intakes are different from those at home (AH) is limited. Data collected among 8849 men and 14 277 women aged 35-64 years from the general population of eleven European countries through 24-h dietary recalls or food diaries were analysed to: (1) compare food consumption OH to those AH; (2) describe the characteristics of substantial OH eaters, defined as those who consumed 25% or more of their total daily energy intake at OH locations. Logistic regression models were fit to identify personal characteristics associated with eating out. In both sexes, beverages, sugar, desserts, sweet and savoury bakery products were consumed more OH than AH. In some countries, men reported higher intakes of fish OH than AH. Overall, substantial OH eating was more common among men, the younger and the more educated participants, but was weakly associated with total energy intake. The substantial OH eaters reported similar dietary intakes OH and AH. Individuals who were not identified as substantial OH eaters reported consuming proportionally higher quantities of sweet and savoury bakery products, soft drinks, juices and other non-alcoholic beverages OH than AH. The OH intakes were different from the AH ones, only among individuals who reported a relatively small contribution of OH eating to their daily intakes and this may partly explain the inconsistent findings relating eating out to the current obesity epidemic. 47. Unveiling the Pool of Metallophores in Native Environments and Correlation with Their Potential Producers

Abstract

For many organisms, metallophores are essential biogenic ligands that ensure metal scavenging and acquisition from their environment. Their identification is challenging in highly organic matter rich environments like peatlands due to low solubilization and metal scarcity and high matrix complexity. In contrast to common approaches based on sample modification by spiking of metal isotope tags, we have developed a two-dimensional (2D) Solid-phase extraction-Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPE-LC-MS) approach for the highly sensitive (LOD 40 fmol per g of soil), high-resolution direct detection and identification of metallophores in both their noncomplexed (apo) and metal-complexed forms in native environments. The characterization of peat collected in the Bernadouze (France) peatland resulted in the identification of 53 metallophores by a database mass-based search, 36 among which are bacterial. Furthermore, the detection of the characteristic (natural) metal isotope patterns in MS resulted in the detection of both Fe and Cu potential complexes. A taxonomic-based inference method was implemented based on literature and public database (antiSMASH database version 3.0) searches, enabling to associate over 40% of the identified bacterial metallophores with potential producers. In some cases, low completeness with the MIBiG reference BCG might be indicative of alternative producers in the ecosystem. Thus, coupling of metallophore detection and producers’ inference could pave a new way to investigate poorly documented environment searching for new metallophores and their producers yet unknown.

48. Resolving Severe Elemental Isobaric Interferences with a Combined Atomic and Molecular Ionization Source-Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry Approach: The 87 Sr and 87 Rb Geochronology Pair.

Abstract

Many fields of basic and applied sciences, including geochronology, astronomy, metabolism, etc., rely on the ability of mass spectrometry to obtain isotope ratio measurements having a high degree of certainty. The inability to resolve difficult isobaric interferences plagues certain measurements. A combined atomic and molecular (CAM) ionization source has been interfaced to a high-field Orbitrap mass spectrometer to alleviate severe atomic, isobaric interferences. This work examines the geochronologically significant 87 Sr and 87 Rb isotope pair. The mass difference between 87 Sr and 87 Rb is approximately 0.3 mDa, requiring a minimum resolving power ( R = m /Δ m ) of ∼290,000, a value ∼30× higher than available with sector-field elemental mass spectrometers. Under ultrahigh-resolution conditions, Sr isotope ratio accuracy and precision were evaluated using NIST Sr SRM 987, yielding precision values of <0.1% relative standard deviation (RSD) for the major isotopes and a calculated LOD of 2 pg mL -1 (120 fg of Sr for a 60 μL injection). In addition to manipulating the signal transient length, the total number of ions in the electrostatic trap and the 87 Sr/ 87 Rb concentration ratio were found to influence resolution. Ultimately, the isotopes were baseline-resolved with a calculated mass resolution of >1.7M. At equal 87 Sr and 87 Rb intensities, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr was measured as 0.71294 (a relative error of only 0.37%) with a precision of 0.097% RSD, clearly reflecting the alleviation of the isobaric interference.
