The Beaverlodge area in Saskatchewan, Canada, hosts numerous fault-controlled uranium deposits that are geochemically and structurally complex because of multiple deformation events. Field, petrographic, and geo-chemical data indicate there are six distinct styles of uraninite mineralization, with five temporally distinct mineralization events. The earliest two styles of mineralization are hosted in cataclasite and veins that formed at ca. 2.29 Ga from 300°C fluids derived from retrograde metamorphic processes during late stages of the early Paleoproterozoic Arrowsmith orogen. The second style of mineralization is restricted to the albitized granite of the Gunnar deposit and formed between ca. 2.3 and 1.9 Ga from reducing magmatic-hydrothermal fluids near 300°C. However, uranium associated with this metasomatic style of mineralization is overprinted by the more significant breccia-vein and minor volcanic-type mineralization, thus the Gunnar deposit contains three styles of mineralization. Reactivation of major fault zones resulted in breccia-type mineralization, the dominant mineralizing event, at ca. 1.85 Ga, from Ca-Na-F-rich fluids at about 330°C during the postpeak Thelon-Taltson orogen and early stages of the Trans-Hudson orogen. Inversion followed by subsidence resulted in formation of the Martin Lake basin, a successor basin filled with ca. 5 km of arkose, conglomerates, siltstone, and alkaline mafic flows and sills that formed during back-arc extension following peak Trans-Hudson orogeny. Volcanic-style mineralization at 1.82 Ga. resulted from late exsolution of magmatic fluids from the alkaline mafic dikes. Overlying the Martin Lake basin are outliers of the Athabasca Formation associated with the last stage of uranium mineralization, at ca. 1.62 Ga, from oxidizing basinal brines near 230°C. Subsequent erosion of the Athabasca and Martin Lake basin rocks and weathering of the deposits resulted in secondary uranium minerals and late veins. Multiple stages of deformation and fluid overprinting suggest that uranium mineralization record progressively higher levels in the crust. Each successive event overprinted to varying degrees the previous events. Although the Beaverlodge area represents several distinct mineralizing events, the major event is the breccia-type that occurred at 1.85 Ga. This article is concerned with the dynamics of change in protein consumption practices from the perspective of the consumer. It is based on a model, informed by social representation theory, that aims to understand the role played by various types of representation of alternative proteins in the process of changing food consumption practices. It discusses the reception, by consumers, of the representations associated with alternative proteins on Instagram. Methodologically, three focus groups were organized with different consumer segments (omnivorous, flexitarian and vegetarian and vegan consumers), as well as seven individual interviews. Participants were submitted to the social representations of alternative proteins, and visual stimuli from social media were mobilized for this purpose. Results show that the publications which boast the environmental, animal welfare or health attributes of alternative proteins generally contribute to the cultivation of new elements of practices. While this kind of publications is essential to help consumers question their established practices linked to meat and dairy consumption, they can also generate a critical reception that is not conducive to change, making them a double-edge sword. Publications that relate to the representations involved in daily food consumption proteins (e.g. that alternative proteins are versatile and crowd-pleasing) emerge as being safer in terms of reception, although as standalone they may not be able to achieve a deep level of change in food consumption practices. CHCHD10-related disease causes a spectrum of clinical presentations including mitochondrial myopathy, cardiomyopathy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). We generated a knock-in mouse model bearing the p.Ser59Leu (S59L) CHCHD10 variant. Chchd10 S59L/+ mice have been shown to phenotypically replicate the disorders observed in patients: myopathy with mtDNA instability, cardiomyopathy and typical ALS features (protein aggregation, neuromuscular junction degeneration and spinal motor neuron loss). Here, we conducted a comprehensive behavioral, electrophysiological and neuropathological assessment of Chchd10 S59L/+ mice. These animals show impaired learning and memory capacities with reduced long-term potentiation (LTP) measured at the Perforant Pathway-Dentate Gyrus (PP-DG) synapses. In the hippocampus of Chchd10 S59L/+ mice, neuropathological studies show the involvement of protein aggregates, activation of the integrated stress response (ISR) and neuroinflammation in the degenerative process. These findings contribute to decipher mechanisms associated with CHCHD10 variants linking mitochondrial dysfunction and neuronal death. The first Swiss national dietary survey (MenuCH) was used to screen disease burdens and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) of Swiss diets (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, slimming), with a focus on gender and education level. The Health Nutritional Index (HENI), a novel disease burden-based nutritional index built on the Global Burden of Disease studies, was used to indicate healthiness using comparable, relative disease burden scores. Low whole grain consumption and high processed meat consumption are priority risk factors. Non-processed red meat and dairy make a nearly negligible contribution to disease burden scores, yet are key drivers of diet-related GHGs. Swiss diets, including vegetarian, ranged between 1.1-2.6 tons of CO 2 e/person/year, above the Swiss federal recommendation 0.6 ton CO 2 e/person/year for all consumption categories. This suggests that only changing food consumption practices will not suffice towards achieving carbon reduction targets: Systemic changes to food provisioning processes are also necessary. Finally, men with higher education had the highest dietary GHG emissions per gram of food, and the highest disease burden scores. Win-win policies to improve health and sustainability of Swiss diets would increase whole grain consumption for all, and decrease alcohol and processed meat consumption especially for men of higher education levels.

The Himalayan foreland basin formed by flexure of the Indian Plate below the advancing orogen. Motion on major thrusts within the orogen has resulted in damaging historical seismicity, whereas south of the Main Frontal Thrust (MFT), the foreland basin is typically portrayed as undeformed. Using two-dimensional seismic reflection data from eastern Nepal, we present evidence of recent deformation propagating >37 km south of the MFT. A system of tear faults at a high angle to the orogen is spatially localized above the Munger-Saharsa basement ridge. A blind thrust fault is interpreted in the subsurface, above the sub-Cenozoic unconformity, bounded by two tear faults. Deformation zones beneath the Bhadrapur topographic high record an incipient tectonic wedge or triangle zone. The faults record the subsurface propagation of the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) into the foreland basin as an outer frontal thrust, and provide a modern snapshot of the development of tectonic wedges and lateral discontinuities preserved in higher thrust sheets of the Himalaya, and in ancient orogens elsewhere. We estimate a cumulative slip of ∼100 m, accumulated in <0.5 Ma, over a minimum slipped area of ∼780 km 2 These observations demonstrate that Himalayan ruptures may pass under the present-day trace of the MFT as blind faults inaccessible to trenching, and that paleoseismic studies may underestimate Holocene convergence., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interest.

Meat consumption has become a contentious issue among the Swiss population. The emotional character of the debates surrounding the necessity for a change of habits, namely a reduction in consumption and a shift in the kind of meat we eat, reveals its particular place in our societies: as a symbolic food with roots in our affective economies, as involved in the creation of a shared culture and national identity, and as a political object used to defend different views. To date, research in sustainable consumption has given much attention to environmental- and animal-friendly groups and their practices. However, certain interest groups have been voicing the right to meat, or promoting alternative forms of meat consumption. In this paper, we seek to understand the affective dimension of 'no', 'low' and 'pro' meat consumption initiatives in the Swiss context. Based on a qualitative study and an understanding of emotions as part of social practices, we draw out what affects and related moralities are being mobilized by prescribers and how they are picked up in practice. By doing so, we contribute to further understanding the emotions and moral registers linked to different approaches to meat (non)consumption, their role in promoting certain practices over others, as well as the dynamics that make reducing meat consumption so controversial. In cancer biology, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is associated with tumorigenesis, stemness, invasion, metastasis, and resistance to therapy. Evidence of co-expression of epithelial and mesenchymal markers suggests that EMT should be a stepwise process with distinct intermediate states rather than a binary switch. In the present study, we propose a morphological approach that enables the detection and quantification of cancer cells with hybrid E/M states, i.e., which combine partially epithelial (E) and partially mesenchymal (M) states. This approach is based on a sequential immunohistochemistry technique performed on the same tissue section, the digitization of whole slides, and image processing. The aim is to extract quantitative indicators able to quantify the presence of hybrid E/M states in large series of human cancer samples and to analyze their relationship with cancer aggressiveness. As a proof of concept, we applied our methodology to a series of about a hundred urothelial carcinomas and demonstrated that the presence of cancer cells with hybrid E/M phenotypes at the time of diagnosis is strongly associated with a poor prognostic value, independently of standard clinicopathological features. Although validation on a larger case series and other cancer types is required, our data support the hybrid E/M score as a promising prognostic biomarker for carcinoma patients.

This paper takes as a starting point "food consumption prescriptions", or guidelines on what and how one should eat when it comes to "healthy and sustainable diets". Through qualitative research in Switzerland, involving discourse analysis, observations, in-depth interviews, and focus groups, we set out to uncover the more dominant prescriptions put forward by a variety of actors, how consumers represent these prescriptions, as well as overlaps and tensions between them. The notion of a "balanced meal" is the more prominent prescription, along with the idea that food and eating should be "pleasurable". Guidelines towards eating local and seasonal products overlap with organic and natural food consumption, while prescriptions to eat less meat of higher quality are in tension with prescriptions around vegetarian and vegan diets. We then consider how prescriptions play out in daily life, as both a resource and obstacle towards the establishment of eating habits, and what dimensions of everyday life have the most influence on how certain prescriptions are enacted - contributing to conceptual deliberations on food in relation to social practices. Time, mobility, and the relationships built around food and eating are forces to be reckoned with when considering possible transitions towards the normative goal of "healthier and more sustainable diets"., (Copyright © 2018 The Authors. Purpose: To develop a murine total marrow irradiation (TMI) model in comparison with the total body irradiation (TBI) model., Materials and Methods: Myeloablative TMI and TBI were administered in mice using a custom jig, and the dosimetric differences between TBI and TMI were evaluated. The early effects of TBI/TMI on bone marrow (BM) and organs were evaluated using histology, FDG-PET, and cytokine production. TMI and TBI with and without cyclophosphamide (Cy) were evaluated for donor cell engraftment and tissue damage early after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Stromal derived factor-1 (SDF-1) expression was evaluated., Results: TMI resulted in similar dose exposure to bone and 50% reduction in dose to bystander organs. BM histology was similar between the groups. In the non-HCT model, TMI mice had significantly less acute intestinal and lung injury compared to TBI. In the HCT model, recipients of TMI had significantly less acute intestinal injury and spleen GVHD, but increased early donor cell engraftment and BM:organ SDF-1 ratio compared to TBI recipients., Conclusions: The expected BM damage was similar in both models, but the damage to other normal tissues was reduced by TMI. However, BM engraftment was improved in the TMI group compared to TBI, which may be due to enhanced production of SDF-1 in BM relative to other organs after TMI., (Copyright © 2017 The Authors. This study is an evaluation of a unique "surveillance nurse" telephone support intervention for community-dwelling elderly individuals in a home care program. A combined propensity-based covariate-matching procedure was used to pair each individual who received the intervention ("treatment" condition, nT = 930) to a similar individual who did not receive the intervention ("control" condition, nC1 = 930) from among a large pool of potential control individuals (nC0 = 4656). The intervention consisted of regularly scheduled telephone calls from a surveillance nurse to proactively assess the individual's well-being, care plan status, use of and need for services (home support, adult day program, physiotherapy, etc.) and home environment (e.g., informal caregiver support). Treatment and control conditions were compared with respect to four service utilization outcomes: (1) rate of survival in the community before institutionalization in an assisted living or nursing home facility or death, (2) rate of emergency room registrations, (3) rate of acute care hospitalizations, and (4) rate of days in hospital, during home care enrollment. Results indicated a beneficial effect of the surveillance nurse intervention on reducing rate of service utilization by increasing the duration of the home care episode., (Crown Copyright © 2015. We present plasma membrane (PM) internalization responses of type I alveolar epithelial cells to a 50 mosmol/l increase in tonicity. Our research is motivated by interest in ATI repair, for which endocytic retrieval of PM appears to be critical. We validated pharmacological and molecular tools to dissect the endocytic machinery of these cells and used these tools to test the hypothesis that osmotic stress triggers a pathway-specific internalization of PM domains. Validation experiments confirmed the fluorescent analogs of lactosyl-ceramide, transferrin, and dextran as pathway-specific cargo of caveolar, clathrin, and fluid-phase uptake, respectively. Pulse-chase experiments indicate that hypertonic exposure causes a downregulation of clathrin and fluid-phase endocytosis while stimulating caveolar endocytosis. The tonicity-mediated increase in caveolar endocytosis was associated with the translocation of caveolin-1 from the PM and was absent in cells that had been transfected with dominant-negative dynamin constructs. In separate experiments we show that hypertonic exposure increases the probability of PM wound repair following micropuncture from 82 ± 4 to 94 ± 2% (P < 0.01) and that this effect depends on Src pathway activation-mediated caveolar endocytosis. The therapeutic and biological implications of our findings are discussed.

A detailed knowledge of Himalayan development is important for our wider understanding of several global processes, ranging from models of plateau uplift to changes in oceanic chemistry and climate. Continental sediments 55 Myr old found in a foreland basin in Pakistan are, by more than 20 Myr, the oldest deposits thought to have been eroded from the Himalayan metamorphic mountain belt. This constraint on when erosion began has influenced models of the timing and diachrony of the India-Eurasia collision, timing and mechanisms of exhumation and uplift, as well as our general understanding of foreland basin dynamics. But the depositional age of these basin sediments was based on biostratigraphy from four intercalated marl units. Here we present dates of 257 detrital grains of white mica from this succession, using the 40Ar-39Ar method, and find that the largest concentration of ages are at 36-40 Myr. These dates are incompatible with the biostratigraphy unless the mineral ages have been reset, a possibility that we reject on the basis of a number of lines of evidence. A more detailed mapping of this formation suggests that the marl units are structurally intercalated with the continental sediments and accordingly that biostratigraphy cannot be used to date the clastic succession. The oldest continental foreland basin sediments containing metamorphic detritus eroded from the Himalaya orogeny therefore seem to be at least 15-20 Myr younger than previously believed, and models based on the older age must be re-evaluated.

In this article, the author relates her experience as atrustee of psychiatric patients who are on welfare or under a public trusteeship. She explains the legal context that allows her to be a trustee and the modalities of administring the patient's dayIy affairs. With the help of concrete examples, she also describes how this management, riddled with difficulties though it may be, nevertheless helps the patients. She then proceeds by giving a provisional assessment of this experience.
