Gobius xanthocephalus Heymer & Zander, 1992 (Fig. 38)—Yellow-headed Goby Gobius xanthocephalus Heymer & Zander, 1992: 305, type locality: western Mediterranean Sea, France, Banyuls-sur-Mer, Ile Grosse. Size. Known adult size about 9 cm total length. Morphology. D VI + I,13–16; A I,13–15; P 18–20. Medium-sized goby with moderately elongate body, large head, and a short, slightly acute and oblique snout. Caudal peduncle deep, but lower than body. Dorsal fins of similar height, the first dorsal fin may be slightly higher in appearance, with more or less rounded distal edge and no elongate spines. Caudal fin rounded. Scales present on body and on predorsal area, usually visible on photographs at least on body. Live coloration. Head yellowish, more intensely on the snout and in the interorbital space, contrasting with a light gray or whitish body (Fig. 38). Head and body covered with longitudinal lines of well-defined orange to dark red dots. Eyes with brown stripes radiating from the pupil over iris to the orbital rim, 2 of them constituting a broad horizontal stripe across the pupil; the upper eye radial stripes are connected by an irregular longitudinal curved line (Fig. 38b). Upper lip with orange markings. Lower lip with a median W-shaped mark. Snout with Mshaped line and an oblique preorbital bar (Fig. 38b). One isolated brown to dark red dot at the corner of the mouth, followed by 2 short horizontal dashes (Fig. 33e). Similar species. Gobius auratus morph 2, G. fallax. Habitat. Infralittoral species, known from 1–36 m depth (Heymer & Zander 1992; Wirtz & Herrera 1995) on hard (e.g., bedrock, coralligenous) or mixed bottoms (e.g., sandy patches with pebbles, boulders, and seagrass). Geographic distribution. Northeastern Atlantic, Mediterranean and Black Sea. In the Mediterranean, recorded in the northwestern Mediterranean (Miller 1986), including the Balearic Island of Ibiza (Fisher et al. 2007) and Corsica (Francour et al. 2010). Isolated populations confirmed in Crimea (Boltachev et al. 2009) and in the eastern part of the Black Sea (Vasil’eva & Bogorodsky 2004). Characteristics of seven Atlantic-Mediterranean fish species are provided. Of them, four (gobies—yellow-headed Gobius xanthocephalus and red-mouthed G. cruentatus, incognito blenny Parablennius incognitus, and greater pipefish Syngnathus acus) were either first found in the Black Sea coastal zone of the Crimea, or their findings were doubted, and three species (thin-lipped grey mullet Liza ramada, European barracuda Sphyraena sphyraena, and Black Sea salmon Salmo trutta labrax) are very rare. Over the last decade, the authors recorded 15 fish species; of them, seven Atlantic-Mediterranean species have dispersed along the Crimean coasts by now, one endemic of the far eastern seas (chameleon goby Tridentiger trigonocephalus) has naturalized in Sevastopol Bay, four invading species, freshwater by origin, permanently occur in the estuary zones of the peninsula; the remaining three species are known from single findings and apparently belong to the category of accidental fish. An increase in the species composition of ichthyofauna off the Black Sea coasts of the Crimea results from the on-going process of mediterranization—the invasion in the estuary of freshwater tolerant species at the expense of accidental species that penetrated here either independently or with ballast waters.

Larval development of Gobius xanthocephalus with descriptions of the ontogeny of the main structures, changes in pigmentation patterns and allometric relationships are presented for the first time. No previous descriptions of G. xanthocephalus larvae are available and therefore field collected larvae were compared with larvae obtained under controlled conditions. The DNA of adults, juveniles and larvae was compared in order to validate identifications. The overall developmental sequence obtained agrees with those described for other gobies. Pigmentation patterns were, however, distinct from those of other sympatric Gobiidae allowing a clear identification of G. xanthocephalus larvae. Temporal variation in a temperate cryptobenthic fish assemblage at the Arrábida Marine Park (Portugal) was assessed by visual surveys during 2002 and 2003. A total of 9596 fish from 11 families and 30 species was recorded. There were no changes in structure or density at the assemblage level between years, whereas diversity changed significantly due to a higher number of abundant species in the second year. A similar seasonal trend was found between years, with a significant overall density increase in autumn. This is partially explained by the arrival of new recruits of some of the most abundant species in the assemblage. Assemblage diversity and structure also changed across seasons. A group of species encompassing Gobius xanthocephalus, Tripterygion delaisi, Parablennius pilicornis, Gobius paganellus, Lepadogaster candollii and Lepadogaster spp. were analysed in detail. The temporal patterns of two of the most abundant species, G. xanthocephalus and T. delaisi, mimicked the overall temporal patterns of the assemblage. We suggest that the inter-annual stability in density of this subtidal fish assemblage may be similar to what has been reported for the intertidal and that strong post-settlement processes are probably shaping this assemblage.

The study focused on two gobiid taxa from the northern Adriatic Sea. External features and coloration suggest identification of one of these with Gobius auratus Risso, 1810. This species is characterized by a deeply emarginated pelvic disc and meristic features of typically second dorsal fin rays I/14, anal rays I/13 and scales in lateral series 45. The live coloration of the northern Adriatic population shows a yellow basic coloration but with distinct longitudinal lines of red dots and, therefore, its colour significantly differs from the uniformly yellow coloration supposed to be typical for this species. A redescription of this putative G. auratus Risso, 1810 is carried out to extend the morphological characteristics of the species to cover also the northern Adriatic population. Two colour morphs are described and morphometrics as well as details on the lateral line system of the species are newly included in the species description. Descreve-se pela primeira vez a ocorrência da lagosta de recife Enoplometopus antillensis Lütken, 1865 nas águas das ilhas Canárias. Esta espécie é provavelmente mais comum do que a espécie E. callistus Intès Loeuff, 1970 registada anteriormente e com a qual foi confundida no passado. O gobídeo Gobius xanthocephalus Heymer & Zander, 1992, é comum em lugares protegidos. A ocorrência desta espécie nas ilhas Canárias, onde no passado foi confundido com Gobius auratus Risso, 1810, o que aumenta a sua distribuição conhecida 1000 km para o sul. ABSTRACT: We record the presence of the reef lobster Enoplometopus antillensis Lütken, 1865 in the Canary Islands. This species apparently is more common than the previously recorded E. callistus Intès & Le Loeuff, 1970 and has been confused with it in the past. The goby Gobius xanthocephalus Heymer & Zander, 1992, is common in sheltered places. The record of this species in the Canary Islands, which in the past has been confused with Cobius auratus Risso, 1810, extends the known range of the species 1000 km to the south.
