We determine the quark contributions to the nucleon spin Delta s, Delta u and Delta d as well as their contributions to the nucleon mass, the sigma-terms. This is done by computing both, the quark line connected and disconnected contributions to the respective matrix elements, using the non-perturbatively improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert Wilson Fermionic action. We simulate n_F=2 mass degenerate sea quarks with a pion mass of about 285 MeV and a lattice spacing a = 0.073 fm. The renormalization of the matrix elements involves mixing between contributions from different quark flavours. The pion-nucleon sigma-term is extrapolated to physical quark masses exploiting the sea quark mass dependence of the nucleon mass. We obtain the renormalized value sigma_{piN}=38(12) MeV at the physical point and the strangeness fraction f_{Ts}=sigma_s/m_N=0.012(14)(+10-3) at our larger than physical sea quark mass. The delta-regime of QCD is characterised by light quarks in a small spatial box, but a large extent in (Euclidean) time. In this setting a specific variant of chiral perturbation theory - the delta-expansion - applies, based on a quantum mechanical treatment of the quasi one-dimensional system. In particular, for vanishing quark masses one obtains a residual pion mass M_pi^R, which has been computed to the third order in the delta-expansion. A comparison with numerical measurements of this residual mass allows for a new determination of some Low Energy Constants, which appear in the chiral Lagrangian. We first review the attempts to simulate 2-flavour QCD directly in the delta-regime. This is very tedious, but results compatible with the predictions for M_pi^R have been obtained. Then we show that an extrapolation of pion masses measured in a larger volume towards the delta-regime leads to good agreement with the theoretical predictions. From those results, we also extract a value for the (controversial) sub-leading Low Energy Constant \bar l_3., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is generally assumed to be the fundamental theory underlying nuclear physics. In recent years there is progress towards investigating the nucleon structure from first principles of QCD. Although this structure is best revealed in Deep Inelastic Scattering, a consistent analysis has to be performed in a fully non-perturbative scheme. The only known method for this purpose are lattice simulations. We first sketch the ideas of Monte Carlo simulations in lattice gauge theory. Then we comment in particular on the issues of chiral symmetry and operator mixing. Lattice calculations could boost our understanding of Deep Inelastic Scattering by evaluating moments of the Nucleon Structure Functions. To this end we study the product of electromagnetic currents between quark states. The Operator Product Expansion (OPE) decomposes it into matrix elements of local operators (depending on the quark momenta) and Wilson coefficients (as functions of the larger photon momenta). For consistency with the matrix elements, we evaluate a set of Wilson coefficients non-perturbatively, based on propagators for numerous momentum sources, on a 24^3 x 48 lattice. The use of overlap quarks suppresses unwanted operator mixing and lattice artifacts. The nucleon electromagnetic form factors continue to be of major interest for experimentalists and phenomenologists alike. They provide important insights into the structure of nuclear matter. For a range of interesting momenta they can be calculated on the lattice. The limiting factor continues to be the value of the pion mass. The internal structure of hadrons is important for a variety of topics, including the hadron form factors, proton spin and spin asymmetry in polarized proton scattering. For a systematic study generalized parton distributions (GPDs) encode important information on hadron structure in the entire impact parameter space. We report on a computation of nucleon GPDs based on simulations with two dynamical non-perturbatively improved Wilson quarks with pion masses down to 350MeV. The electromagnetic form factors provide important hints for the internal structure of the nucleon and continue to be of major interest for experimentalists. For an intermediate range of momentum transfers the form factors can be calculated on the lattice. However, reliability of the results is limited by systematic errors due to the required extrapolation to physical quark masses. Chiral effective field theories predict a rather strong quark mass dependence in a range which was yet unaccessible for lattice simulations. We give an update on recent results from the QCDSF collaboration using gauge configurations with Nf=2, non-perturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson fermions at very small quark masses down to 340 MeV pion mass, where we start to probe the relevant quark mass region., Comment: 7 pages, contribution to Lattice 2006

We present results for the first two moments of the distribution amplitudes of pseudoscalar mesons. We present the non-forward quark matrix elements of operators with one and two covariant derivatives needed for the renormalisation of the first and second moments of generalised parton distributions in one-loop lattice perturbation theory using clover fermions. For some representations of the hypercubic group commonly used in simulations we define the sets of possible mixing operators and compute the one-loop mixing matrices of renormalisation factors. Generalized transversity distributions encode essential information on the internal structure of hadrons related to transversely polarized quarks. Lattice QCD allows us to compute the lowest moments of these tensor generalized parton distributions. We present an initiatory study of quark helicity flip generalized parton distributions (GPDs) in n_f=2 lattice QCD, based on clover-improved Wilson fermions for a large number of coupling constants and pion masses. Quark helicity flip GPDs yield essential information on the transverse spin structure of the nucleon. By considering the local vector current between nucleon states and imposing charge conservation, we determine its renormalisation constant and quark mass improvement coefficient for Symanzik $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. We present a calculation of the lowest-lying baryon masses in the quenched approximation to QCD. The calculations are performed using a non-perturbatively improved clover fermion action, and a splitting is found between the masses of the nucleon and its parity partner. An analysis of the mass of the first radial excitation of the nucleon finds a value considerably larger than that of the parity partner of the nucleon, and thus little evidence for the Roper resonance as a simple three-quark state, Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, uses ws-p8-50x6-00.cls. We discuss the extraction of negative-parity baryon masses from lattice QCD calculations. The mass of the lowest-lying negative-parity $J = 1/2^{-}$ state is computed in quenched lattice QCD using an ${\cal O}(a)$-improved clover fermion action, and a splitting found with the nucleon mass. The calculation is performed on two lattice volumes, and three lattice spacings enabling a study of both finite-volume and finite-lattice-spacing uncertainties. A measurement of the first excited radial excitation of the nucleon finds a mass considerably larger than that of the negative-parity ground state, in accord with other lattice determinations but in disagreement with experiment. Using unimproved and non-perturbatively O(a) improved Wilson fermions, results are given for the three lowest moments of unpolarised nucleon structure functions. Renormalisation, chiral extrapolation and the continuum limit of the matrix elements are briefly discussed. The simulations are performed for both quenched and two flavours of unquenched fermions. No obvious sign of deviation from linearity in the chiral extrapolations are found. (This is most clearly seen in our quenched unimproved data, which extends to lighter quark mass.) Possible quenching effects also seem to be small. We present a calculation of the mass of the lowest-lying negative-parity J=1/2- state in quenched QCD. Results are obtained using a non-perturbatively O(a)-improved clover fermion action, and a splitting is found between the mass of the nucleon and its parity partner. Our previous calculation of the spin-dependent structure function g_2 is revisited. The interest in this structure function is to a great extent motivated by the fact that it receives contributions from twist-two as well as from twist-three operators already in leading order of 1/Q^2 thus offering the unique possibility of directly assessing higher-twist effects. In our former calculation the lattice operators were renormalized perturbatively and mixing with lower-dimensional operators was ignored. However, the twist-three operator which gives rise to the matrix element d_2 mixes non-perturbatively with an operator of lower dimension. Taking this effect into account leads to a considerably smaller value of d_2, which is consistent with the experimental data., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures

We present calculations of matrix elements of 4-quark operators in the pion and in the nucleon extracted from quenched Monte Carlo simulations at beta = 6.0 using Wilson fermions. These operators are relevant for higher-twist effects. A numerical study of quenched QCD for light quarks is presented using O(a) improved fermions. Particular attention is paid to the possible existence and determination of quenched chiral logarithms. A completely non-perturbative estimate is given for the u/d and strange quark masses in quenched QCD using O(a) improved fermions and, for comparison, Wilson fermions. For improved fermions we find m_{u/d}^MSbar(\mu=2 GeV) = 4.4(2) MeV, m_s^MSbar(\mu=2 GeV) = 105(4) MeV when using r_0 to set the physical scale., Comment: LATTICE99(spectrum), 3 pages, 3 figures

A fully non-perturbative lattice determination of the up/down and strange quark masses is given for quenched QCD using both, $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions and ordinary Wilson fermions. For the strange quark mass with $O(a)$ improved fermions we obtain $m^{\msbar}_s(\mu=2 {GeV}) = 105(4) {MeV}$, using the interquark force scale $r_0$. Due to quenching problems fits are only possible for quark masses larger than the strange quark mass. If we extrapolate our fits to the up/down quark mass we find for the average mass $m^{\msbar}_l(\mu=2 {GeV}) = 4.4(2) {MeV}$., Comment: Latex, 25 pages, 12 eps figures

Nucleon form factors have been extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically for many years. We report here on new results of a high statistics quenched lattice QCD calculation of vector and axial-vector nucleon form factors at low momentum transfer within the Symanzik improvement programme. The simulations are performed at three kappa and three beta values allowing first an extrapolation to the chiral limit and then an extrapolation in the lattice spacing to the continuum limit. We calculate the hadronic coupling constants $g_{NN\pi}$ and $g_{\rho\pi\pi}$ in QCD, including dynamical quarks in the framework of staggered fermions in the lattice approach. For the nucleon--pion coupling we obtain $g_{NN\pi} = 13.8 \pm 5.8$, to be compared with the experimental value $13.13 \pm 0.07$.
