The conformational space of cis-1,2-cyclohexanediol, a model molecule for cyclic vicinal diols, was investigated using rotational spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Four low energy conformers within an energy window of 5 kJ mol−1 were identified computationally. A rotational spectrum of jet-cooled cis-1,2-cyclohexanediol was recorded with a chirped pulse Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. Two sets of rotational transitions were observed and could be assigned to conformers of cis-1,2-cyclohexanediol. The non-observation of other low energy conformers was explained by conformational conversion barrier height calculations and results from experimental spectra recorded with different carrier gases. Eight isotopologues, including those with 13C and 18O, of the lowest energy conformer were observed, allowing the determination of the semi-experimental equilibrium structure, reSE. Interestingly, the structural analysis revealed that the C–O bond length of the intramolecular hydrogen-bond donor is shorter than that of the acceptor. In the interstellar medium, diols and other prebiotic molecules adsorb onto icy mantles surrounding dust grains. Water in the ice may affect the reactivity and photoionization of these diols. Ethylene glycol (EG), 1,2-propylene glycol, and 1,3-propylene glycol clusters with water clusters were used as a proxy to study these interactions. The diol–water clusters were generated in a continuous supersonic molecular beam, photoionized by synchrotron-based vacuum ultraviolet light from the Advanced Light Source, and subsequently detected by reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The appearance energies for the detected clusters were determined from the mass spectra, collected at increasing photon energy. Clusters of both diol fragments and unfragmented diols with water were detected. The lowest energy geometry optimized conformers for the observed EG–water clusters and EG fragment–water clusters have been visualized using density functional theory (DFT), providing insight into hydrogen bonding networks and how these affect fragmentation and appearance energy. As the number of water molecules clustered around EG fragments (m/z 31 and 32) increased, the appearance energy for the cluster decreased, indicating a stabilization by water. This trend was supported by DFT calculations. Fragment clusters from 1,2-propylene glycol exhibited a similar trend, but with a smaller energy decrease, and no trend was observed from 1,3-propylene glycol. We discuss and suggest that the reactivity and photoionization of diols in the presence of water depend on the size of the diol, the location of the hydroxyl group, and the number of waters clustered around the diol. The thermal hysteresis exhibited in plastic crystal compounds greatly reduces their cyclic efficiency, limiting their potential for replacing current environmentally harmful refrigerants. A mechanistic understanding of the origins of this hysteresis has yet to be established. Here, we systematically investigate the transformation kinetics of the model plastic crystal, neopentyl glycol (NPG), through microscopic and calorimetric techniques. We reveal an asymmetry between the forward (heating) and reverse (cooling) transitions. We also demonstrate that the forward transformation is rate-limited by the rate of growth of rotationally disordered domains. In contrast, the reverse transformation is rate-limited by the nucleation of the ordered crystal domain, demonstrated by the sharp exothermic peaks in calorimetry and rapid self-nucleation phenomena observed optically. This nucleation limitation is largely responsible for the large thermal hysteresis in NPG, which we observe to be as large as 16.7 °C for an approximately 10 mg sample cooled at 0.5 °C min−1. These findings demonstrate the underlying origin of the thermal hysteresis and introduce a direction to mitigate hysteresis in plastic crystal transformations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work shows that various polyurethanes (FPUs) prepared using biomass-derived furan diols can be applied as promising tribopositive materials. The elastic FPUs having appropriate glass transition temperature (Tg) could be incorporated into polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics to form FPU/PET films. The optimal FPU-4/PET film showed promising triboelectric performance with output voltages (Vp–p) up to 405 V and a maximum power density (Pmax) of 32 mW cm−2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of a novel CAAC ligands featuring a spiro‐fluorene group have been synthesized and complexed with ruthenium alkylidenes, yielding the corresponding Hoveyda‐type derivatives as a new family of olefin metathesis catalysts. The novel complexes have been characterized by XRD, HRMS and NMR measurements. The synthetised complexes were tested in catalysis and showed good activity in olefin metathesis, as demonstrated on diethyl diallylmalonate and allyl acetate substrates. The unique backbone in the ligand with the large, yet inflexible condensed system renders interesting properties to the catalyst, exemplified by the good catalytic performance and improved Z‐selectivity. In addition, the complex can also serve as a hydrogenation catalyst in a consecutive (one‐pot) reaction. Comprehensive Summary To address the stereoselective synthesis challenge in π‐stacked grids with four chiral centers, we utilized coplanar and highly rigid 11,12‐dihydroindeno[2,1‐a]fluorene‐11,12‐diol and 2,2'‐bithiophene as synthons, employing Friedel‐Crafts gridization (FCG). Leveraging the supramolecular interactions of S···S and π···π within the thiophene moiety, along with the steric effect of the 11,12‐dihydroindeno[2,1‐a]fluorene scaffold, we successfully achieved the exclusive generation of a single isomer of Ladder‐type π‐stacked grids (LGs‐IF) containing six theoretical isomers. By subsequently substituting 2,2'‐bithiophene with thiophene/bithiophene derivatives as synthons, we maintained an exceptionally high level of stereoselectivity. Objectives Increasing studies demonstrated the importance of C5a and anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-induced neutrophil activation in the pathogenesis of ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV). Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) acts as a downstream effector molecule of C5a and enhances neutrophil activation induced by C5a and ANCA. The current study investigated the role of a S1P receptor modulator, FTY720, in experimental autoimmune vasculitis (EAV) and explored the immunometabolism-related mechanisms of FTY720 in modulating ANCA-induced neutrophil activation. Methods The effects of FTY720 in EAV were evaluated by quantifying haematuria, proteinuria, crescent formation, tubulointerstitial injury and pulmonary haemorrhage. RNA sequencing of renal cortex and gene enrichment analysis were performed. The proteins of key identified pathways were analysed in neutrophils isolated from peripheral blood of patients with active AAV and normal controls. We assessed the effects of FTY720 on ANCA-induced neutrophil respiratory burst and neutrophil extracellular traps formation (NETosis). Results FTY720 treatment significantly attenuated renal injury and pulmonary haemorrhage in EAV. RNA sequencing analyses of renal cortex demonstrated enhanced fatty acid oxidation (FAO) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signalling in FTY720-treated rats. Compared with normal controls, patients with active AAV showed decreased FAO in neutrophils. FTY720-treated differentiated HL-60 cells showed increased expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1a (CPT1a) and PPARα. Blocking or knockdown of CPT1a or PPARα in isolated human neutrophils and HL-60 cells reversed the inhibitory effects of FTY720 on ANCA-induced neutrophil respiratory burst and NETosis. Conclusion FTY720 attenuated renal injury in EAV through upregulating FAO via the PPARα–CPT1a pathway in neutrophils, offering potential immunometabolic targets in AAV treatment. 3,3,3-Trifluoro-1,2-propanediol undergoes complete defluorination in two distinct steps: first, the conversion into 3,3,3-trifluoropropionaldehyde catalyzed by adenosylcobalamin (coenzyme B 12 )-dependent diol dehydratase; second, non-enzymatic elimination of all three fluorides from this aldehyde to afford malonic semialdehyde (3-oxopropanoic acid), which is decarboxylated to acetaldehyde. Diol dehydratase accepts 3,3,3-trifluoro-1,2-propanediol as a relatively poor substrate, albeit without significant mechanism-based inactivation of the enzyme during catalysis. Optical and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra revealed the steady-state formation of cob(II)alamin and a substrate-derived intermediate organic radical (3,3,3-trifluoro-1,2-dihydroxyprop-1-yl). The coenzyme undergoes Co–C bond homolysis initiating a sequence of reaction by the generally accepted pathway via intermediate radicals. However, the greater steric size of trifluoromethyl and especially its negative impact on the stability of an adjacent radical centre compared to a methyl group has implications for the mechanism of the diol dehydratase reaction. Nevertheless, 3,3,3-trifluoropropionaldehyde is formed by the normal diol dehydratase pathway, but then undergoes non-enzymatic conversion into acetaldehyde, probably via 3,3-difluoropropenal and malonic semialdehyde. Three types of 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene-based diols reacted with 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone via nucleophilic substitution polymerization to afford the corresponding aromatic poly(ether ketone)s. The resulting polyketones have excellent solubility in typical organic solvents, such as THF, CHCl3, and NMP. They also have good thermal stability above 400 °C (Td10). In particular, the surface tension of the polyketone, which has four C4F9 groups per repeating unit, is 18.7 mN/m, which is equal to that of PTFE. BACKGROUND: The production of value‐added chemicals from pyrolysis oil or its fractions is of great significance for the valorization of biomass. Diols, including ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,2‐propylene glycol (1,2‐PG), are important bulk chemicals with widespread industrial applications. Here we investigated the production of diols from pyrolysis oil water‐soluble fraction (WS) using a hybrid catalyst (Ni + H2WO4). RESULTS: Firstly, levoglucosan, glycolaldehyde and acetol, three main components in WS, were respectively selected as the single model compound, and their respective conversions into diols were investigated at different temperatures for different reaction times. The result showed the optimum reaction temperature and time were 180 °C and 2 h respectively, under which a EG yield of 53.8% and 1,2‐PG yield of 5.2% were obtained from levoglucosan conversion, a EG yield of 98.6% was obtained from glycolaldehyde conversion, and a 1,2‐PG yield of 98.5% was obtained from acetol conversion. The reaction pathway of levoglucosan conversion was analyzed. Secondly, the model mixture of levoglucosan, glycolaldehyde and acetol was used to simulate the real WS, and their conversion was investigated at different ratios of H2WO4 to Ni. The result showed the optimum catalyst composition was 0.15 g H2WO4 and 0.3 g Ni, under which a EG yield of 76.4% and 1,2‐PG yield of 38.4% were obtained. Thirdly, the real original WS was converted under the optimum reaction conditions and the result only gave a EG yield of 19.1% and 1,2‐PG yield of 25.8% (based on the carbon moles of main substrates), which were much less than the two yields of model mixture. That was related to the presences of other types of chemicals in original WS. After the original WS being adsorbed by activated carbon, the yields of EG and 1,2‐PG could be increased to 39.2% and 37.9%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The presences of certain other types of chemicals (such as acids, furans, phenolics and cyclopentanones) in original WS inhibited the production of diols. The activated carbon adsorption could efficiently remove most of furans, phenolics and cyclopentanones in original WS and increased significantly the diols yields. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI). BACKGROUND: The present work describes the facile, fast and economic base‐catalyzed acylation of benzenediols with vinyl acetate. The Hirshfeld surface analysis of benzene‐1,4‐diol O,O′‐diacetate is also described. NaOH, KOH and K2CO3 were the bases used for the catalysis of the acylation of benzene‐1,x‐diols (x = 2, 3, 4) with vinyl acetate to obtain the corresponding O,O′‐diacetyl derivatives. RESULTS: The yields were quite good, up to 99% under solvent‐free conditions. This method represents an alternative 'green' process for the preparation of O‐acetyl derivatives of hydroxyaryls. The benzene‐1,4‐diol O,O′‐diacetate crystal structure was obtained and described using Hirshfeld surface analysis. A noticeable contribution of the C⋯H contacts is shown (16.7%), despite the insignificant area of the Hirshfeld surface occupied by the carbon atoms (9.4%). By using two‐dimensional fingerprint plots, it was proved that C⋯H contacts were due to the presence of π‐stacking. The O⋯H contacts (41.4%) were the most numerous ones, relating mainly to typical hydrogen bonds (de + di ≈ 2.6 Å). The high saturation of the C⋯H and O⋯H contacts (enrichment ratios (E) = 1.30 and 1.36, respectively), despite their smaller contribution to the overall surface as compared to the H⋯H contacts (E = 0.84), is shown. CONCLUSION: The novelty of this work is the development of a method based on an inexpensive, safe and easy‐to‐use catalyst (K2CO3). This method is fast with high yields. A highly effective enantioselective monobenzoylation of 1,3‐diols has been developed for the synthesis of 1,1‐disubstituted tetrahydro‐β‐carbolines. The chemistry has been successfully applied to the asymmetric total synthesis of (+)‐alstrostine G, which also features a cascade Heck/hemiamination reaction enabling facile construction of the pivotal pentacyclic core. Herein, the use of economically and environmentally friendly bis(pinacolato)diboron (B2Pin2) is described as a non‐metallic reductant in mediating Ni‐catalyzed C(sp3)–C(sp2) reductive cross‐coupling of alkyl electrophiles with aryl/vinyl halides. This method exhibits excellent suitability for heteroaryl halides and alkyl halides/Katritzky salts. The present study is compatible with an in situ halogenation of alcohol method, allowing for selective mono‐functionalization of diols and bio‐relevant alcohols (e.g., carbohydrates). The use of B2Pin2 shows potential for easy scalability without introducing additional metal impurities into the products. It is observed for the first time in the realm of cross‐electrophile coupling chemistry that B2Pin2 can sever as a reductant to reduce NiII to Ni0. In this contribution, the transformation of polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD) from thermoset into vitrimer is introduced. First, two N‐coordinated diboronic diols are successfully synthesized via the reaction of N,N,N‐tri(2‐hydroxyethyl)amine and/or N,N,N",N"‐tetrakis(2‐hydroxyethyl)ethylene diamine with 4‐(hydroxymethyl) phenylboronic acid and then they are transformed into two N‐coordinated cyclic boronic diacrylates. The latter two dienes carrying electron‐withdrawing substituents are used for the ring opening insertion metathesis copolymerization (ROIMP) of dicyclopentadiene to afford the crosslinked PDCPD. In the crosslinked PDCPD networks, N‐coordinated cyclic boronic ester bonds are integrated. It is found that the as‐obtained PDCPD networks displayed the excellent reprocessing properties. In the meantime, the fracture toughness is significantly improved. Owing to the inclusion of N‐coordinated cyclic boronic ester bonds, the modified PDCPDs have the thermal stability much superior to plain PDCPD. Activating brown adipose tissue (BAT) improves systemic metabolism, making it a promising target for metabolic syndrome. BAT is activated by 12,13-dihydroxy-9Z-octadecenoic acid (12,13-diHOME), which we previously identified to be inversely associated with BMI and which directly improves metabolism in multiple tissues. Here we profile plasma lipidomics from 83 people and test which lipids' association with BMI replicates in a concordant direction using our novel tool ScreenDMT, whose power and validity we demonstrate via mathematical proofs and simulations. We find that the linoleic acid diols 12,13-diHOME and 9,10-diHOME are both replicably inversely associated with BMI and mechanistically activate calcium influx in mouse brown and white adipocytes in vitro, which implicates this signaling pathway and 9,10-diHOME as candidate therapeutic targets. ScreenDMT can be applied to test directional mediation, directional replication, and qualitative interactions, such as identifying biomarkers whose association is shared (replication) or opposite (qualitative interaction) across diverse populations. A study of blood lipids in two cohorts using a new replication test, ScreenDMT, finds that people with lower BMI have higher levels of linoleic acid diols 12,13-diHOME and 9,10-diHOME, which upregulate adipocyte calcium influx. First examples of covalently linked triphyrin(2.1.1)-triphyrin(2.1.1) homo dimers connected via flexible alkoxy linkers at β-pyrrole positions were synthesized in 28–30% yields by reacting 2-bromo triphyrin(2.1.1) with three different alkane diols such as 1,2-ethanediol, 1,4-butanediol and 1,6-hexanediol in toluene under Pd2(dba)3/DPEphos catalyzed conditions by refluxing for 12–20 h. One of the free base triphyrin–triphyrin homo dimers was metallated by treating the homo dimer with Re(CO)5Cl in toluene under reflux and afforded bis-Re(I) homo dimer complex in 53% yield. Three free base homo dimers and one bis-Re(I) homo dimer complex were thoroughly characterized and studied using HR-MS, 1D and 2D NMR, absorption spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and DFT calculations. Our attempts to obtain the X-ray structure of homo dimers were not successful. However, DFT studies revealed that homo dimers prefer to exist in anti-conformation rather than syn-conformation and both triphyrin macrocycles in homo dimers were similar in terms of the deviation of pyrrole rings from the mean plane defined by the four meso carbons of the respective triphyrin unit. Absorption spectra of homo dimers showed similar absorption features such as in triphyrin(2.1.1) with slight changes in their absorption peak maxima. α‐costic acid, the main component of Dittrichia viscosa collected from Morocco, was converted to its derivative γ‐costic acid, both products were the subject of a transformation to obtain new oxygenated derivatives (vicinal diols). The starting material, α‐costic acid was converted to methyl‐α and γ‐costate. The two esters were transformed to vicinal diols employing two reagents I2/t‐BuOOH and diluated KMnO4. The first one was the regioselectivity activation of carbon‐carbon double bond using iodine, creating an iodonium intermediate which react with t‐BuOOH to give corresponding diol and the second one was the exploitation of KMnO4 as an effective and environmentally friendly oxidant. For the controllable transformation of C3–6 diols in ethylene glycol (EG), a H-Beta zeolite catalyst was modified with NH3via incomplete desorption. 60.8% of acid sites on the zeolite were deactivated, but the ratio of strong acid sites was obviously increased. With 1,2-pentanediol (PDO) as a representative large-carbon-number diol, the undesirable acetalization and oligomerization reactions of EG were suppressed in the EG-PDO reaction system over the modified catalyst due to their dependency on total acid sites. NH3-TPD and FTIR results proved that Lewis acid sites on the modified zeolite were eliminated after modification, resulting in the suppression of acetalization and oligomerization reactions. In contrast, a portion of strong Brønsted acid sites still remained, ensuring the catalytic transformation of PDO. Only 8.2% of EG was consumed after 8 h reaction, and the conversion of PDO could reach 84.3%. The loading of NH3 on the surface of zeolite pores led to diffusion resistance, slightly decreasing the reaction rate of PDO without affecting the reaction selectivity. The catalytic reactions of other C3–6 diols in EG followed similar principles, and the selectivity to aldehydes or ketone was improved over this modified catalyst. Non-diol biomass hydrogenation products such as glycerol had a negative influence on the selectivity, so these components should be isolated before the reactions. This catalyst could be reused at least 5 times, and the conversion of PDO slightly decreased. This study explores the synthesis and performance of novel copolyesters containing 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) as a biobased secondary diol. This presents an opportunity for improving their thermal properties and reducing crystallinity, while also being more sustainable. It is, however, a challenge to synthesize copolyesters of sufficient molecular weight that also have high 2,3-BDO content, due to the reduced reactivity of secondary diols compared to primary diols. Terephthalate-based polyesters were synthesized in combination with different ratios of 2,3-BDO and ethylene glycol (EG). With a 2,3-BDO to EG ratio of 28:72, an Mn of 31.5 kDa was reached with a Tg of 88 °C. The Mn dropped with increasing 2,3-BDO content to 18.1 kDa for a 2,3-BDO to EG ratio of 78:22 (Tg = 104 °C) and further to 9.8 kDa (Tg = 104 °C) for the homopolyester of 2,3-BDO and terephthalate. The water and oxygen permeability both increased significantly with increasing 2,3-BDO content and even the lowest content of 2,3-BDO (28% of total diol) performed significantly worse than PET. The incorporation of 2,3-BDO had little effect on the tensile properties of the polyesters, which were similar to PET. The results suggest that 2,3-BDO can be potentially applied for polyesters requiring higher Tg and lower crystallinity than existing materials (mainly PET). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Carbonyl compounds, especially aldehydes, emitted to the atmosphere, may suffer hydration in aerosols or water droplets in clouds. At the same time, they can react with hydroxyl radicals which may add or abstract hydrogen atoms from these species. The interplay between hydration and hydrogen abstraction is studied using density functional and quantum composite theoretical methods, both in the gas phase and in simulated bulk water. The H-abstraction from the aldehydic and geminal diol forms of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, glycolaldehyde, glyoxal, methylglyoxal, and acrolein is studied to determine whether the substituent has any noticeable effect in the preference for the abstraction of one form or another. It is found that abstraction of the H-atom adjacent to the carbonyl group gives a more stable radical than same abstraction from the geminal diol in the case of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and glycolaldehyde. The presence of a delocalizing group in the Cα (a carbonyl group in glyoxal and methylglyoxal, and a vinyl group in acrolein), reverts this trend, and now the abstraction of the H-atom from the geminal diol gives more stable radicals. A further study was conducted abstracting hydrogen atoms from the other different positions in the species considered, both in the aldehydic and geminal diol forms. Only in the case of glycolaldehyde, the radical formed by H-abstraction from the –CH2OH group is more stable than any of the other radical species. Abstraction of the hydrogen atom in one of the hydroxyl groups in the geminal diol is equivalent to the addition of the •OH radical to the aldehyde. It leads, in some cases, to decomposition into a smaller radical and a neutral molecule. In these cases, some interesting theoretical differences are observed between the results in gas phase and (simulated) bulk solvent, as well as with respect to the method of calculation chosen. Methods: DFT (M06-2X, B2PLYP, PW6B95), CCSD(T), and composite (CBS-QB3, jun-ChS, SCVECV-f12) methods using Dunning basis sets and extrapolation to the CBS limit were used to study the energetics of closed shell aldehydes in their keto and geminal-diol forms, as well as the radical derived from them by hydrogen abstraction. Glyceric acid (GA), a carboxylic group-containing diol, is obtained from bioresources via microbial processes. In this study, we aimed to develop a reactive extraction method to separate GA from aqueous solutions using 2-naphthaleneboronic acid (2NB) and tri-octyl methyl ammonium chloride (TOMAC). Different feed molar amounts of 2NB (0–25 µmol), TOMAC (0–500 µmol), and NaOH (0–250 µmol) were used for GA (2.5 µmol) separation. A combination of 25 µmol 2NB, 100 µmol TOMAC, and 25 µmol NaOH was determined to be optimal for GA separation, providing 66.8 ± 3.2% GA yield at pH 11. GA was extracted by 2NB and TOMAC in a coordinated manner. Moreover, effects of various carboxylic acids (acetic, lactic, succinic, malic, tartaric, and citric acids) on GA separation from aqueous solutions were investigated. Interestingly, no significant effect on GA yeild (60.3 ± 1.2–65.2 ± 2.5%) was observed regardless of the type of carboxylic acid. The optimized protocol was subsequently applied to separate GA from crude GA solution prepared by incubating glycerol with the cells of the acetic acid bacterium, Acetobacter tropicalis NBRC 16470. GA separation was achieved at a comparable level (yield: 70.6 ± 4.6% and purity: 76.1 ± 4.1%) as that achieved using a GA reagent. 2-amino-4, 6-dichloro-1,3, 5-triazine (ADCT), with its triazine ring structure, was introduced into methoxy polyethylene glycol (MPEG), and MPEG with a triazine ring structure (ADMT) was prepared by grafting the -OH of MPEG at the position 4 and 6 of the triazine ring. ADMT was loaded onto the carrier material, graphene oxide (GO), to obtain the form-stable phase change material (FSPCM). FSPCM was blended with polypropylene (PP) using a twin-screw extruder. PP/FSPCM blends with mass ratios of 5%, 10% and 15% of FSPCM were prepared. ADMT, FSPCM and PP/ FSPCM blended materials were characterized by using 1H NMR, FT-IR, DSC and hot table test. The results show that the crystallization enthalpy of FSPCM is 96.1 J · g-1, and FSPCM still retains a good form-setting effect at 250 °C. Three examples of meso‐triaryl trithiapentaphyrin(2.2.1.1.1)s 1–3 (Figure 1) that contains three thiophenes and two pyrrole rings connected via seven meso‐carbons were synthesized by condensing newly synthesized benzo‐fused trithiatripyrrane diol and appropriate meso‐aryl dipyrromethane under mild acid catalysed conditions in 5–8 % yields. In these macrocycles, two of the meso‐positions were fused with the benzene rings and the DFT optimized structural analysis revealed that the macrocycles adopt saddled conformation with the two thiophene rings oriented towards outside the macrocyclic core. HR‐MS and detailed 1D & 2D NMR studies were used in deducing the molecular structures of the macrocycles and NMR studies support their nonaromatic nature. The macrocycles exhibit one strong sharp absorption band at ~430 nm and a broad band in the region of 550–850 nm which were further red‐shifted to NIR region in their protonated derivatives. The control of noncarbon stereogenic centers is of profound importance owing to their enormous interest in bioactive compounds and chiral catalyst or ligand design for enantioselective synthesis. Despite various elegant approaches have been achieved for construction of S‐, P‐, Si‐ and B‐stereocenters over the past decades, the catalyst‐controlled strategies to govern the formation of N‐stereogenic compounds have garnered less attention. Here, we disclose the first organocatalytic approach for efficient access to a wide range of nitrogen‐stereogenic compounds through a desymmetrization approach. Intriguingly, the pro‐chiral remote diols, which are previously not well addressed with enantiocontrol, are well differentiated by potent chiral carbene‐bound acyl azolium intermediates. Preliminary studies shed insights on the critical importance of the ionic hydrogen bond (IHB) formed between the dimer aggregate of diols to afford the chiral N‐oxide products that feature a tetrahedral nitrogen as the sole stereogenic element with good yields and excellent enantioselectivities. Synthesis of polyurethane‐type poly[3]rotaxanes is achieved by polyaddition between a cyclodextrin (CD)‐based [3]rotaxane diol and various diisocyanate species, which provide a more defined structure compared to conventional polyrotaxane syntheses. In this study, hydroxyl groups on CDs of [3]rotaxane diol are initially acetylated, and deprotected after the polyaddition to introduce polyurethane backbone structure into polyrotaxane framework. Despite a relatively complicated chemical structure, [3]rotaxane diol monomer is successfully synthesized in a high yield (overall 67%) without any taxing purification process, which is beneficial for practical applications. The polymerization itself proceeds well under a standard polyaddition reaction condition to afford corresponding polyurethanes around 80% yield with Mn > 30 kDa. The poly[3]rotaxanes show different aggregation behavior or optical properties, whether or not acetyl groups are present, and are analyzed by XRD, SEM, and fluorescence measurements. The (R,R)-Teth-TsDPEN-Ru(II) complex promoted the one-pot double C=O reduction of α-alkyl-β-ketoaldehydes through asymmetric transfer hydrogenation/dynamic kinetic resolution (ATH-DKR) under mild conditions. In this process, ten anti-2-benzyl-1-phenylpropane-1,3-diols (85:15 to 92:8 dr) were obtained in good yields (41–87%) and excellent enantioselectivities (>99% ee for all compounds). Notably, the preferential reduction of the aldehyde moiety led to the in situ formation of 2-benzyl-3-hydroxy-1-phenylpropan-1-one intermediates. The replacement of polymers derived from petrochemical resources has been a prominent area of focus in recent decades. Polymers used in engineering materials must exhibit mechanical strength and stiffness while maintaining performance through a broad temperature range. Most of the polyesters used as engineering materials are based on terephthalic acid (TPA) and its derivatives, which provide necessary rigidity to molecular chains due to an aromatic ring. Bio-based alternatives for TPA-based polyesters that are gaining popularity are the polyesters derived from 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). To broaden applicational possibilities, one effective way to achieve specific properties in targeted applications is to adjust the composition and structure of polymers using advanced polymer chemistry techniques. The incorporation of rigid diols such as isosorbide, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), and 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (CBDO) should result in a greater stiffness of the molecular chains. This review extensively explores the effect of incorporating rigid diols on material properties through a review of research articles as well as patents. Moreover, this review mainly focuses on the polyesters and copolyesters synthesized via two-step melt polycondensation and its alterations due to the industrial importance of this method. In the present research, after preparing a new generation of SWCNT–Fe3O4–CuO/ethylene glycol (EG)–water ternary hybrid nanofluid (THNF), the thermal conductivity (TC) and its effective factors (solid volume fraction (SVF) and temperature (T)) are studied. Results show that the increase in T and SVF has a very favorable effect on the process of optimizing the TC of THNF. The change in thermal conductivity enhancement (TCE) in this study is 2.9% < TCE < 39.2%. The effect of temperature and SVF is compared with each other. The maximum effect of SVF in this experiment was 28.2%, and the maximum effect of T is 8.10%. Therefore, it can be said that SVF is more effective in increasing TCE. Then, numerical and statistical evaluations of TC performance using statistical investigation are performed. The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance represent a growing threat to public health. Of particular concern is the appearance of β-lactamases, which are capable to hydrolyze and inactivate the most important class of antibiotics, the β-lactams. Effective β-lactamase inhibitors and mechanistic insights into their action are central in overcoming this type of resistance, and in this context boronate-based β-lactamase inhibitors were just recently approved to treat multidrug-resistant bacteria. Using boric acid as a simplified inhibitor model, time-resolved serial crystallography was employed to obtain mechanistic insights into binding to the active site serine of β-lactamase CTX-M-14, identifying a reaction time frame of 80–100 ms. In a next step, the subsequent 1,2-diol boric ester formation with glycerol in the active site was monitored proceeding in a time frame of 100–150 ms. Furthermore, the displacement of the crucial anion in the active site of the β-lactamase was verified as an essential part of the binding mechanism of substrates and inhibitors. In total, 22 datasets of β-lactamase intermediate complexes with high spatial resolution of 1.40–2.04 Å and high temporal resolution range of 50–10,000 ms were obtained, allowing a detailed analysis of the studied processes. Mechanistic details captured here contribute to the understanding of molecular processes and their time frames in enzymatic reactions. Moreover, we could demonstrate that time-resolved crystallography can serve as an additional tool for identifying and investigating enzymatic reactions. The chemical recycling of polyester wastes is of great significance for sustainable development, which also provides an opportunity to access various oxygen-containing chemicals, but generally suffers from low efficiency or separation difficulty. Herein, we report anatase TiO2 supported Ru and Mo dual-atom catalysts, which achieve transformation of various polyesters into corresponding diols in 100% selectivity via hydrolysis and subsequent hydrogenation in water under mild conditions (e.g., 160 °C, 4 MPa). Compelling evidence is provided for the coexistence of Ru single-atom and O-bridged Ru and Mo dual-atom sites within this kind of catalysts. It is verified that the Ru single-atom sites activate H2 for hydrogenation of carboxylic acid derived from polyester hydrolysis, and the O-bridged Ru and Mo dual-atom sites suppress hydrodeoxygenation of the resultant alcohols due to a high reaction energy barrier. Notably, this kind of dual-atom catalysts can be regenerated with high activity and stability. Diols, characterized by the presence of two hydroxyl groups, form extended hydrogen‐bonded networks. Increasing hydrocarbon chain length is known to elevate the viscosity of diols. Given the established influence of viscosity on solvent dynamics, it becomes imperative to comprehend the impact of viscosity on the fluctuation dynamics within diols and establish connections with hydrogen bond formation and breaking dynamics. In this study, we employ two‐dimensional infrared spectroscopy to investigate the viscosity dependence of the structural evolution dynamics in three diols with varying chain lengths. Complementing our experimental approach, molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to extract hydrogen bond lifetimes. Our findings reveal a linear correlation between bulk viscosity, solvent fluctuation timescales, and hydrogen bond lifetimes. Notably, the selected diols exhibit the capability to form deep eutectic solvents upon mixing with choline chloride at specific molar ratios. In contrast to molecular solvents like diols, deep eutectic solvents are characterized by the formation of heterogeneous nanodomains, comprising various intercomponent hydrogen‐bonded networks. Interestingly, our observations indicate that while the fluctuation dynamics decelerate with increasing bulk viscosity in diol‐based deep eutectic solvents, the relationship between viscosity and dynamics is not linear, in contrast to the observed linearity in diols. Due to the presence of the boronic acid moieties, poly-3-thienylboronic acid has an affinity for saccharides and other diol-containing compounds. Thin films of this novel chemosensitive polymer were synthesized electrochemically on the gold surface. The adhesion of the polymer was enhanced by the deposition of a monomolecular layer of thiophenol. The technology was used to fabricate conductometric sensors for glucose and other diol-containing compounds. Simultaneous two- and four-electrode conductivity measurements were performed. The chemical sensitivity to sorbitol, fructose, glucose, and ethylene glycol was studied at different pH and electrode potentials, and the corresponding binding constants were obtained. Depending on the electrode potential, the reciprocal values of the binding constants of glucose to poly-3-thienylboronic acid at neutral pH are in the range of 0.2 mM–1.0 mM. The affinity for glucose has been studied in buffer solutions and in solutions containing the major components of human blood. A new approach for compatibilizing polyamide-66 (PA-66)/high density polyethylene blends using polyamide-grafted ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH-g-PA) is presented in this study. EVOH-g-PA was prepared through sequential reactions of adipoyl chloride and hexamethylenediamine with hydroxyl groups of EVOH chains. Two different EVOHs having 44 and 88 mol% ethylene monomer were modified to obtain EVOH44-g-PA and EVOH88-g-PA, respectively. The efficiency of modified EVOHs in compatibilization of PA/PE blends were evaluated by morphological observations as well as rheological and crystallization measurements. The PE droplets in the PA matrix became finer when EVOH44-g-PA or EVOH88-g-PA were incorporated in the blends. However, the compatibilizing effects of EVOH88-g-PA were more pronounced due to higher ethylene content in the primitive EVOH chain promoting its diffusion into the PE droplets. The complex viscosity of compatibilized blends were also enhanced showing the improved adhesion between PA and PE phases. A reduction in the crystallization temperatures (Tc) of PA matrix was noticed upon inclusion of modified EVOHs which was associated with the lowered nucleating activity of the interface due to decreased interfacial tension in the compatibilized blends. To enrich 'epoxide hydrolase (EH) tool cabinet' for preparing enantiopure epoxides and 1,2-diols, a novel microbial EH, Sf EH2, was identified from Streptomyces fradiae SF-2. Bioinformatics analysis indicated that Sf EH2 has typical structural characteristics of α/β-hydrolase fold superfamily. Its coding gene, sfeh 2, was then codon-optimized and amplified. A recombinant (re) Sf EH2-expressing E. coli BL21(DE3) strain (E. coli / sfeh 2) was constructed through DNA manipulations. Substrate spectrum assay including fifteen common racemic (rac -) epoxides by E. coli / sfeh 2 showed that re Sf EH2 displayed the highest and best complementary regioselectivities (regioselectivity coefficients, α R = 89.7% and β S = 91.4%) towards rac - 14a , as well as the highest enantioselectivity (enantiomeric ratio, E = 15.3) in S -type towards rac - 15a. Molecular docking simulation revealed that Sf EH2 preferentially attacked C α of (R)- 14a and C β of (S)- 14a geometrically. In kinetic parameter analysis, the K m R (5.74 mM) of purified re Sf EH2 for (R)- 15a was 1.76-fold lower than K m S (10.09 mM) for (S)- 15a. At last, using 50 mg dry cell weight/mL E. coli / sfeh 2, the scale-up enantioconvergent hydrolysis of 100 mM rac - 14a at 30 °C for 6.0 h afforded (S)- 14b with 80.9% ee p and 90.1% yield, while the kinetic resolution of 150 mM rac - 15a retained (S)- 15a with >99.0% ee s and 42.2% yield. Cross-linking chitosan at room and subzero temperature using a series of diglycidyl ethers of glycols (DEs)—ethylene glycol (EGDE), 1,4-butanediol (BDDE), and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEGDE) has been investigated to demonstrate that DEs can be a more powerful alternative to glutaraldehyde (GA) for fabrication of biocompatible chitosan cryogels with tunable properties. Gelation of chitosan with DEs was significantly slower than with GA, allowing formation of cryogels with larger pores and higher permeability, more suitable for flow-through applications and cell culturing. Increased hydration of the cross-links with increased DE chain length weakened intermolecular hydrogen bonding in chitosan and improved cryogel elasticity. At high cross-linking ratios (DE:chitosan 1:4), the toughness and compressive strength of the cryogels decreased in the order EGDE > BDDE > PEGDE. By varying the DE chain length and concentration, permeable chitosan cryogels with elasticity moduli from 10.4 ± 0.8 to 41 ± 3 kPa, toughness from 2.68 ± 0.5 to 8.3 ± 0.1 kJ/m3, and compressive strength at 75% strain from 11 ± 2 to 33 ± 4 kPa were fabricated. Susceptibility of cryogels to enzymatic hydrolysis was identified as the parameter most sensitive to cross-linking conditions. Weight loss of cryogels increased with increased DE chain length, and degradation rate of PEGDE-cross-linked chitosan decreased 612-fold, when the cross-linker concentration increased 20-fold. Biomaterials are a crucial issue in the field of tissue engineering. Two types of polymeric biomaterials, such as Poly(glycerol Itaconic acid) (PGIt) and Poly(ɛ-caprolactone) diol (PCL-diol), were synthesized by polycondensation and ring opening polymerization (ROP) respectively. The PCL-diol was selected as a minor phase with 30 and 50 wt%, and Closite-Na + was selected as the nanophase with a constant amount of 5 wt%. Molecular structures PGIt and PCL-diol were analyzed by FTIR, 1H-NMR, and GPC techniques. Microstructures showing the presence of PCL-diol in the PGIt have not created compatible morphologies, albeit the presence of clay nanoparticles has helped to achieve the proper morphologies. Low angle XRD showed exfoliated, and intercalated morphologies can be predicted to pure PGIt and PGIt70PCLdiol30Clay5 samples. Mechanical analysis showed that Young's modulus and elongation at the break of PGIt50PCLdiol50Clay5 and PGIt100 samples were higher than other samples. DMTA analysis showed that adding PCL-diol into the PGIt increased glass transition temperature (Tg) and storage modulus at 37 °C. The master curve of the studied samples was prepared by the WLF equation at body temperature. Hydrocatalytical degradation, contact angles, and MTT analysis showed that all samples behave well in biological conditions. Cell adhesion, Dapi, and Alizarin red analysis were carried out on the selected samples, and their results showed that the presence of PCL-diol and Clay into the PGIt has improved the biological behavior of the sample and PGIt50PCLdiol50Clay5 shows just behavior. Poly(ester amide)s (PEAs) have received extensive attention due to their unique chemical structure and excellent properties. In this paper, a novel PEA (P6T6T) was prepared through melt polycondensation of terephthalic acid (PTA) and 6T6‐diamide‐diol (6T6), which was from the amidation of 6‐amino‐1‐hexanol and PTA. The structures were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, fourier transform infrared, and wide‐angle X‐Ray diffraction, and the thermal properties were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis for P6T6T. It was found that the melting point of P6T6T was 217°C, which was about 37°C lower than that of PET (254°C), while the initial decomposition temperature was maintained at about 381°C. P6T6T had a fast crystallization rate (the half time of crystallization (t1/2) range from 35 to 60 s) and great crystallization properties. The saturated water absorption of the P6T6T was measured to be 2.53 wt%, which was three times that of PET (0.83 wt%). Furthermore, the water contact angle of P6T6T was determined to be 57.3°C, much lower than that of PET (94.7°C). In this study, a solubility measurement system was established to assess the solubility of R1234ze(E) and R1336mzz(E) in polyalkylene glycol ether (PAG) and polyol ester (POE) at temperatures (283.15–323.15 K). The Henry's constants for four binary systems R1234ze(E)/PAG, R1336mzz(E)/PAG, R1234ze(E)/POE, and R1336mzz(E)/POE were analyzed and compared. Additionally, The non-random two liquid (NRTL) activity coefficient model was applied to correlate the solubility data in this study. The results indicate that R1234ze(E) exhibits higher solubility in PAG lubricant, while R1336mzz(E) is more easily dissolved in POE lubricant. Moreover, the solubility of R1336mzz(E) in both PAG and POE lubricants shows greater sensitivity to pressure and temperature changes compared to R1234ze(E). The reduction of frictional power losses in power transmitting gears takes a crucial role in the design of energy- and resource-efficient drivetrains. Water-containing lubricants like glycerol and polyalkylene glycols have shown great potential in achieving friction within the superlubricity regime with coefficients of friction lower than 0.01 under elastohydrodynamic lubrication. Additionally, a bio-based production of the base stocks can lead to the development of green lubricants. However, one challenge associated with the application of water-containing lubricants to gearboxes is the evaporation of water and its impact on the lubricant properties. In this study, the influence of water evaporation on elastohydrodynamic friction and film thickness was investigated for three water-containing polyalkylene glycols. Two nominal water contents of 20 wt% and 40 wt% and two viscosities were considered. The results show that the friction increases continuously with higher evaporated water content, while the overall friction level remains low in nearly water-free states. A similar trend is observed for film thickness, where the strong increase in viscosity results in a notable increase in film thickness. Nevertheless, the sensitivity of friction and film thickness to water evaporation is low for small amounts of evaporated water. Abstract This study aimed to measure both the solubility and thermodynamics of salicylic acid in binary solvent mixtures of (2-propanol + ethylene glycol) and (2-propanol + propylene glycol) at different temperatures in the range of 293.2–313.2 K. The experimental solubility data were analyzed using various linear and nonlinear cosolvency models, such as the van’tt Hoff, Jouyban-Acree, Jouyban-Acree-van’tt Hoff, mixture response surface and modified Wilson models and to evaluate the models, the mean relative deviations of the back-calculated solubility data were compared with experimental values. Through this analysis, the apparent thermodynamic parameters, including Gibbs energy, enthalpy, and entropy were calculated using the van’tt Hoff and Gibbs equations for this system. Additionally, the density values for salicylic acid saturated mixtures were also measured and represent mathematically using the Jouyban-Acree model.

The sluggishness of the complementary oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is reckoned as one of the major drawbacks in developing an energy‐efficient green hydrogen‐producing electrolyzer. An array of organic molecule oxidation reactions, operational at a relatively low potential, have been explored as a substitute for the OER. Glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) has emerged as a leading alternative in this context because glycerol, a waste of biodiesel manufacturing, has become ubiquitous and accessible due to the significant growth in the biodiesel sector in recent decades. Additionally, the GOR generates several value‐added organic compounds following oxidation that enhance the cost viability of the overall electrolysis reaction. In this study, a low‐cost, room temperature operable, and energy‐efficient synthetic methodology has been developed to generate unique two‐dimensional CuO nanosheets (CuO NS). This CuO NS material was embedded on a carbon paper electrode, which showcased excellent glycerol electro‐oxidation performance operational at a moderately low applied potential. Formic acid is the major product of this CuO NS‐driven GOR (Faradaic efficiency ~80 %), as it is formed primarily via the glyceraldehyde oxidation pathway. This CuO NS material was also active for oxidizing other abundant alcohols like ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol, albeit at a relatively poor efficiency. Therefore, this robust CuO NS material has displayed the potential to be used in large‐scale electrolyzers functioning with HER/GOR reactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This report detailed the synthesis of multi‐substituted pyrazoles through the acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling (ADC) reaction catalyzed by a well‐defined manganese(I)‐pincer complex. Symmetrically substituted pyrazoles were synthesized by reacting 1,3‐diols with hydrazines. Unsymmetrically substituted pyrazoles were selectively made via the ADC of primary alcohols with methyl hydrazones. Water and hydrogen are liberated as the green byproducts. The endurance of these methodologies has been presented by producing 30 substrates with varied functionalities. Model reactions were scaled up to demonstrate practicability. The reaction rate and order were measured to transparent the involvement of the reagents during catalysis. Control experiments elucidated the plausible reaction mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are manufactured chemicals that have been detected across the globe. Fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) are one PFAS class commonly found in indoor air due to emissions from consumer products (e.g., textiles and food packaging) and are human metabolic, atmospheric oxidative, and industrial precursors of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs). We developed a quantitative method for real-time analysis of gas-phase FTOHs, perfluoroalkyl acids (PFCAs and GenX), one perfluorooctane sulfonamide (EtFOSA), one fluorotelomer diol (FTdiOH), and one fluorinated ether (E2) using high-resolution time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometry equipped with iodide reagent ion chemistry (I-HR-ToF-CIMS). Herein, we present a direct liquid injection method for external calibration, providing detection limits of 0.19–3.1 pptv for 3 s averaging and 0.02–0.44 pptv for 120 s averaging, with the exception of E2, which had detection limits of 1700 and 220 pptv for 3- and 120 s averaging, respectively. These calibrations enabled real-time gas-phase quantification of 6 : 2 FTOH in room air while microwaving popcorn, with an average peak air concentration of 31.6 ± 4.5 pptv measured 2 meters from a closed microwave. Additionally, 8 : 2 and 10 : 2 FTOH concentrations in indoor air were measured in the presence and absence of a rain jacket, with observed peak concentrations of 110 and 25 pptv, respectively. Our work demonstrates the ability of I-HR-ToF-CIMS to provide real-time air measurements of PFAS relevant to indoor human exposure settings and allow for PFAS source identification. In the research field of CO2 electroreduction, gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) are predominantly manufactured through solvent-based processes. Meanwhile, the solvent-free method has gained heightened attention due to its potential to reduce operational and production expenses, while considering ecological aspects such as solvent evaporation, circulation, and waste treatment. Drawing from its successful applications in other fields, we have specifically developed a solvent-free manufacturing method to produce multi-layered Cu-based GDEs for CO2 electroreduction. The procedure is compatible with industrial production lines, specifically through a roll-to-roll process. By evaluating the interplay between production parameters and electrochemical performance of GDEs via various characterization methods, key factors, i.e., hydrophobicity, gas permeability, thickness, and pore size, were adjusted and applied to achieve a highly selective GDE towards C2+ products (alcohols and ethylene) at industrial relevant currents up to 300 mA cm−2 (ethylene ∼40%, ethanol ∼10%, n-propanol ∼15%). Background: Prostate cancer is a common cancer among men worldwide that has a very poor prognosis, especially when it progresses to metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Therefore, novel therapeutic agents for mCRPC are urgently required. Because prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is overexpressed in mCRPC, targeted alpha therapy (TAT) for PSMA is a promising treatment for mCRPC. Astatine-211 (211At) is a versatile α-emitting radionuclide that can be produced using a cyclotron. Therefore, 211At-labeled PSMA compounds could be useful for TAT; however, 211At-labeled compounds are unstable against deastatination in vivo. In this study, to develop in vivo stable 211At-labeled PSMA derivatives, we designed and synthesized 211At-labeled PSMA derivatives using a neopentyl glycol (NpG) structure that can stably retain 211At in vivo. We also evaluated their biodistribution in normal and tumor-bearing mice. Results: We designed and synthesized 211At-labeled PSMA derivatives containing two glutamic acid (Glu) linkers between the NpG structure and asymmetric urea (NpG-L-PSMA ((L-Glu)2 linker used) and NpG-D-PSMA ((D-Glu)2 linker used)). First, we evaluated the characteristics of 125I-labeled NpG derivatives because 125I was readily available. [125I]I-NpG-L-PSMA and [125I]I-NpG-D-PSMA showed low accumulation in the stomach and thyroid, indicating their high in vivo stability against deiodination. [125I]I-NpG-L-PSMA was excreted in urine as hydrophilic radiometabolites in addition to the intact form. Meanwhile, [125I]I-NpG-D-PSMA was excreted in urine in an intact form. In both cases, no radioactivity was observed in the free iodine fraction. [125I]I-NpG-D-PSMA showed higher tumor accumulation than [125I]I-NpG-L-PSMA. We then developed 211At-labeled PSMA using the NpG-D-PSMA structure. [211At]At-NpG-D-PSMA showed low accumulation in the stomach and thyroid in normal mice, indicating its high stability against deastatination in vivo. Moreover, [211At]At-NpG-D-PSMA showed high accumulation in tumor similar to that of [125I]I-NpG-D-PSMA. Conclusions: [211At]At-NpG-D-PSMA showed high in vivo stability against deastatination and high tumor accumulation. [211At]At-NpG-D-PSMA should be considered as a potential new TAT for mCRPC. Long-chain diols are biomarkers commonly used in the marine realm to reconstruct several environmental parameters such as sea surface temperature and salinity. However, they are also produced in lacustrine and slow-flowing river environments, a characteristic that has proved to be useful to trace past riverine inputs in coastal sedimentary records. So far, their use in lacustrine settings is sparse as their controls are not well-known. Previous studies in two lakes have shown that long-chain diol distribution is linked to changes in temperature (in a small Spanish alpine lake), but also to water column stratification (in a large deep Swiss lake). To understand the controls on i) the presence of long-chain diols in lakes, and ii) the distribution of long-chain diol isomers, surface sediments from 52 Swiss lakes were studied. Long-chain diols are present in 57% of the lakes, and machine learning (i.e., random forest model) showed that their presence is mainly controlled by mean annual air temperature, sodium and potassium concentrations and area of the lakes. Long-chain diol isomer relative distribution seems to react to temperature, nutrient (here nitrate) and oxygen concentrations in the lakes. This new insight was tested on a short sedimentary core from Lake Zurich, and compared with other biomarker proxies (based on branched and isoprenoid glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers), as well as with historical record of nutrient contents and temperature. Variations in the long-chain diol index (LDI) mirror measured temperature, but also reacted to changes in nutrients and oxygenation in the lake.
