5. A Practical and Sustainable Ni/Co-Free High-Energy Electrode Material: Nanostructured LiMnO2

Abstract

Ni/Co-free high-energy positive electrode materials are of great importance to ensure the sustainability of Li-ion battery production and its supply chain in addition to minimizing environmental impact. Here, nanostructured LiMnO2with both orthorhombic/monoclinic layered domains is synthesized, and its lithium storage properties and mechanism are examined. High-energy mechanical milling is used to convert the metastable and nanosized LiMnO2adopting the cation-disordered rocksalt structure to an optimal domain-segregated layered LiMnO2. This positive electrode produces an energy density of 820 W h kg–1, achieved by harnessing a large reversible capacity with relatively small voltage hysteresis on electrochemical cycles. Moreover, voltage decay for cycling, as observed for Li-excess Mn-based electrode materials, is effectively mitigated. Furthermore, by determining the structure–property relationships of different LiMnO2polymorphs, LiMnO2with similar domain structure and surface area is successfully synthesized with an alternative and simpler method, without the metastable precursor and high-energy mechanical milling. The cyclability of domain-containing LiMnO2is also improved with the use of a highly concentrated electrolyte coupled with a lithium phosphate coating due to the suppression of Mn dissolution. These findings maximize the possibility of the development of high-energy, low-cost, and practical rechargeable batteries made from sustainable and abundant Mn sources without Ni/Co.

6. Boron Nitride Nanotube Films Grown From Boron Ink Painting

Abstract

The growth of nanotube films on various substrates and surfaces is vital for applications in nanoscale functional devices. We report a simple and versatile boron (B) ink painting method that enables high-density boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) films with any desired pattern to be grown on, and firmly attached to, different surfaces. In the method, special B ink is first painted, sprayed or inkjet printed at desired location with required pattern, and then the ink layer is annealed in a nitrogen-containing atmosphere to form BNNT film. The B ink is a liquid mixture of ball-milled B particles, metal nitrate and ethanol. This is the first method capable of growing BNNTs on complex non-flat surfaces, which greatly broadens the potential application of BNNTs. For example, it is demonstrated that a BNNT coated steel mesh can separate water and oil on a microliter scale; a needle given an internal BNNT coating could greatly enhance microfluidic transport; and a coated screw could be used to minimize wear at the interface., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Potassium-ion batteries are attracting considerable attention as a viable type of high voltage battery. Among available anode materials, composites containing Sb2S3are some of the most interesting high capacity candidates. A nanostructured Sb2S3-reduced graphene oxide composite anode material is evaluated in this study and compared with a structurally similar SnS2-reduced graphene oxide material reported previously by this team. The behaviour of the Sb2S3-based electrodes is assessed in both 1 M KPF6in ethylene carbonate-diethyl carbonate and 1 M KPF6in 1,2-dimethoxyethane electrolytes. Depotassiation capacities in excess of 650 mA h g−1are recorded for the composite electrodes, superior not only to SnS2-based electrodes but also to all previously reported Sb2S3-containing electrode materials for potassium-ion batteries. In order to establish insights into the reaction mechanism of the Sb2S3phase with potassium, post-cycling X-ray diffraction andin situtransmission electron microscopy are utilised. The recorded data suggest the presence of antimony alloys and potassium polysulphides as reaction products and intermediates; a possible conversion-alloying reaction mechanism is discussed. The results indicate that a capacity higher than previously believed is achievable in the Sb2S3active component of potassium-ion battery electrodes.

Abstract

2D transition metal carbides and nitrides called “MXene” are recent exciting additions to the 2D nanomaterials family. The high electrical conductivity, specific capacitance, and hydrophilic nature of MXenes rival many other 2D nanosheets and have made MXenes excellent candidates for diverse applications including energy storage, electromagnetic shielding, water purification, and photocatalysis. However, MXene nanosheets degrade relatively quickly in the presence of water and oxygen, imposing great processing challenges for various applications. Here, a facile solvent exchange (SE) processing route is introduced to produce nonoxidized and highly delaminated Ti3C2Tx MXene dispersions. A wide range of organic solvents including methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, butanol, acetone, dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, chloroform, dichloromethane, toluene, and n‐hexane is used. Compared to known processing approaches, the SE approach is straightforward, sonication‐free, and highly versatile as multiple solvent transfers can be carried out in sequence to yield MXene in a wide range of solvents. Conductive MXene polymer composite fibers are achieved by using MXene processed via the solvent exchange (SE) approach, while the traditional redispersion approach has proven ineffective for fiber processing. This study offers a new processing route for the development of novel MXene‐based architectures, devices, and applications.

Abstract

An anode material incorporating a sulfide is reported. SnS2 nanoparticles anchored onto reduced graphene oxide are produced via a chemical route and demonstrate an impressive capacity of 350 mA h g-1, exceeding the capacity of graphite. These results open the door for a new class of high capacity anode materials (based on sulfide chemistry) for potassium-ion batteries.

Abstract

The electrochemical behaviour of a Sn-based anode in a potassium cell is reported for the first time. The material is active at low potentials vs. K/K(+), and encouraging capacities of around 150 mA h g(-1) are recorded. Experimental evidence shows that Sn is capable of alloying/de-alloying with potassium in a reversible manner.
