Glossogobius aureus (Gobiiformes: Gobiidae) is a target fish and widely distributed in the Mekong Delta, from fresh to brackish waters. However, knowledge on its food and feeding ecology is scarce. Therefore, this research was carried out in four sampling sites along the estuarine of Hau River in order to fill this information gap. A total of 742 individual fish was collected monthly using trawl nets from January to December 2020. A combined analysis of the fullness index and Costello graph suggested that this fish species displayed high feeding intensity. The results revealed that G. aureus is a carnivore and its food composition comprised Acetes spp., Actinopterygii, zooplankton, and other preys (e.g. snails and detritus). Acetes spp. is the main food of this species. The diet composition varied with sites but not genders, fish sizes, and seasons. Acetes spp., Actinopterygii and other preys contributed to the spatial variation of food composition. The findings revealed knowledge about the fish feeding ecology, which may propose suitable foods for its aquaculture development.

The present study was conducted in four sampling sites, from fresh to brackish waters, to contribute knowledge on the length-weight relationship, growth, and body condition factor of the commercial fish Glossogobius aureus (Gobiiformes: Gobiidae) in the Mekong Delta. Fish specimens were caught using gill nets from January to December 2020. Data analyzed results of 742 specimens (382 males and 360 females) showed that weights of males and females in various sizes, seasons, and sites are able to estimate from a fish given length due to high determination coefficients (r²> 0.8, in all cases). The growth pattern of Glossogobius aureus fluctuated monthly from negative allometry to isometry and positive allometry as its slope (b) obtained from LWRs ranged from 2.583±0.119 SE to 3.123±0.066 SE. Likewise, b of this fish changes with fish size and site, but not season and gender. Albeit the growth pattern showed intraspecific and spatio-temporal variations, this goby displayed negative allometry since b (2.859±0.030) was lower than three. Likely, fish body condition factors, ranging from 0.937±0.022 SE to 1.218±0.030 SE, varied between fish sizes, sites, and months. We applied next-generation sequencing (NGS) method to construct the complete mitochondrial genome of Glossogobius aureus. The obtained mitogenome of G. aureus (16,590 bp) exhibited a typical structure harboring 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), two ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), and one control regions (D-loop). Most of mitochondrial genes are encoded on the heavy (H) strand, except for eight tRNAs and ND6. Unusual start codons were identified in COX1 (GTG) and ATP6 (TTG). Six genes (ND2, COX2, COX3, ND3, ND4, and CytB) were terminated by an incomplete stop codon (TA−/T–). A phylogenetic study showed that Glossogobius formed a clade distinct from other species in the subfamily Gobiinae. G. aureus was most closely related to G. giuris with 87.04% sequence identity among the four species in the genus Glossogobius.

Nghiên cứu về đặc điểm sinh học sinh sản của cá bống cát(Glossogobius aureus Akihito & Meguro, 1975)được tiến hành ở vùng ven biển tỉnh Bến Tre trong khoảng thời gian từ tháng 01 đến tháng 12 năm 2013. ít nhất 30 mẫu cá được thu hằng tháng để phân tích một số đặc điểm sinh học sinh sản. Kết quả nghiên cứu đã xác định được hệ số điều kiện CF thấp nhất vào tháng 10 và cao vào tháng 1. Tương tự, hệ số thành thục sinh dục(GSI)của cá cái và cá đực đạt cao nhất vào tháng 10 và thấp nhất vào tháng 1. Ngược lại thì hệ số tích lũy năng lượng(HSI)của cá cái và cá đực thấp nhất vào tháng 10 và cao nhất vào tháng 1. Kết quả phân tích hệ số điều kiện CF, hệ số thành thục sinh dục GSI, hệ số tích lũy năng lượng và tỉ lệ thành thục qua các tháng cho thấy cá bống cát có mùa vụ sinh sản từ tháng 9 đến tháng 12. Nghiên cứu đã xác định được sức sinh sản tuyệt đối của cá bống cát là khá cao dao động từ 30.848-276.457 trứng/cá cái. Trứng cá bống cát có hình bầu dục, kích thước trứng nhỏ nhưng có thể quan sát bằng mắt thường khi buồng trứng đạt giai đoạn IV, trung bình đường kính trứng theo chiều dài là 0,77±0,07 mm và đường kính trứng trung bình theo chiều rộng là 0,20±0,02 mm. Chiều dài thành thục đầu tiên của loài cá này là 13,02 cm.
