Dit syntheserapport richt zich op de ecologische situatie kort na de aanleg van suppletie (T1) waarvoor in juni 2019 een zandspiering en in september 2019 een benthosbemonstering is uitgevoerd. De voor- en na-situatie worden met elkaar vergeleken om inzicht te krijgen in de impact van de pilotsuppletie. De veldgegevens zijn aangevuld met literatuurgegevens en data van vogels en zeehonden uit andere studies. Met als doel het beantwoorden van de onderzoeksvragen: Is de verspreiding van benthische habitats en benthische soortensamenstelling in de T1-bemonstering vergelijkbaar met het patroon dat is gevonden tijdens de T0-bemonsteringen; en is de suppletie van invloed geweest? Wat is de samenstelling van de bodemvisgemeenschap in de buitendelta van het Amelander Zeegat ten opzichte van de T0 en is de suppletie hierop van invloed geweest? Zijn er vogelsoorten waarvoor de buitendelta van het Amelander Zeegat een belangrijk rust- en of foerageergebied vormt en zo ja, is er een relatie tussen de verspreiding over en het gebruik door vogels van de buitendelta en specifieke onderdelen van de buitendelta en is de suppletie hierop van invloed geweest? Vormen de buitendelta’s belangrijke foerageergebieden voor de grijze zeehond, de gewone zeehond en de bruinvis en zo ja, is er dan een relatie tussen het gebruik als foerageergebied en specifieke onderdelen van de buitendelta en is de suppletie hierop van invloed geweest?

In 2006 is een planologische kernbeslissing genomen over het Project Mainportontwikkeling Rotterdam (PMR). In dit kader is in 2008 begonnen met de aanleg van Maasvlakte 2. In samenhang daarmee zijn natuurcompensatiemaatregelen genomen in de Voordelta. Vanaf 2009 is in het kader van het project Natuurcompensatie Voordelta (PMR-NCV) een monitoring- en onderzoeksprogramma uitgevoerd in de Voordelta, voortvloeiend uit de monitoringverplichtingen in het kader van de vergunning op grond van de Nb-wet 1998 voor de aanleg en aanwezigheid van Maasvlakte 2 en de bijbehorende natuurcompensatie. Het hier voorliggende rapport vormt de wetenschappelijke rapportage over de resultaten van het programma. Het rapport geeft een synthese van de monitorings- en onderzoeksresultaten uit de nulmetingen (2004-2007) en de eerste (2009-2015) en tweede (2016-2018) fase van PMR-NCV, aangevuld met de resultaten van ander relevant onderzoek. Op grond hiervan worden de effecten van de natuurcompensatiemaatregelen beschreven. Dit rapport vormt een vervolg op de in 2018 gepubliceerde synthese (Tulp et al., 2018a). Het rapport omvat zowel een actualisatie van analyseresultaten en conclusies op basis van meetgegevens uit recente jaren die nog niet beschikbaar waren in 2018, als resultaten van nieuwe analyses.Corrigendum en addendum toegevoegd in februari 2024.

The effort, value and landings by the Dutch, UK, Danish, German, Belgian, Swedish and French fishing seine fleets on the Dutch and German part of the Dogger Bank show low and irregular activity over the 2013-2019 period, driven mainly by fishing opportunities for plaice. The ban of pulse fishing is unlikely to lead to an increase of flyshoot vessels in the Dutch fleet given the financial, technical, regulatory and knowledge barriers to transition. Ecological impact of seines alone is complex to assess and while uncertain, the impact on relative benthic biomass is considered low at the past and current level of fishing., De inspanning, waarde en aanlandingen door de Nederlandse, Britse, Deense, Duitse, Belgische, Zweedse en Franse zegenvisserij op het Nederlandse en Duitse deel van de Doggersbank vertonen in de periode 2013-2019 een lage en onregelmatige activiteit, voornamelijk gedreven door vangstmogelijkheden voor schol. Het verbod op visserij met puls zal waarschijnlijk niet leiden tot een toename van het aantal flyshoot-schepen in de Nederlandse vloot, gezien de financiële, technische, regelgevende en kennisbarrières voor transitie. De ecologische impact van zegenvisserij alleen is moeilijk te beoordelen en hoewel niet met zekerheid te bepalen, wordt de impact op de relatieve biomassa van de bodemdierengemeenschap van vroegere en huidige visserijniveaus als laag beschouwd.

Offshore wind farms potentially have an effect on the benthic ecosystem. Given the plans for large-scale development of offshore wind farms on the Dutch Continental Shelf (DCS), understanding these effects is relevant for policy and regulations regarding these developments. Because studying the effects of offshore wind farms on the benthic ecosystem is expensive and time-consuming, it is important to use all knowledge which is already available before deciding if and what additional research is necessary. To facilitate the uptake of all available knowledge in Dutch policy and management decisions, we reviewed the research conducted to study benthic effects of offshore wind farms in the North Sea (and Kattegat). We focus on the research conducted, results obtained, methods used, technical parameters of the offshore wind farms and prevailing abiotic conditions. Using the results of this review, we assess the relevance of this research for the Dutch offshore wind development and its effects on the benthic ecosystem of the DCS, and derive lessons for possible future studies.

Benthos onderzoek aan offshore windparken wordt uitgevoerd om inzicht te krijgen in de lange termijn effecten van de aanwezigheid van een windmolenpark (en de uitsluiting van visserij daarbinnen) op de benthische gemeenschappen van de zachte bodems en tevens hoe de benthische gemeenschappen op het geïntroduceerde hard substraat zich hebben ontwikkeld. Dit is van belang om inzicht te krijgen in de effecten van operationele parken op lange termijn (decennia) en wat dit kan betekenen met betrekking tot schaalvergroting. Het doel van deze studie is inzichtelijk te maken welke nieuwe inzichten kunnen worden verwacht van een herhaalde bemonstering van het benthos in het harde en zachte substraat van de windmolenparken PAWP en OWEZ, ongeveer 10 en 15 jaar na de installatie van deze parken. Tevens wordt gekeken of en hoe eventuele aanpassing van de bemonstering de verwachtte resultaten kan versterken.

This project looked at the effect of closing an area for fisheries on the development of the benthic community. An existing data set of benthic species densities sampled at different distances and angles from a platform was used for this purpose. The particular area was closed due to the installation of a gas production platform, but is likely to function as a marine protected area (MPA), with the expectation that the benthic community develops differently from the benthic community in the surrounding areas as it no longer has to cope with the impact of fisheries. Differences in development might be linked to the impact of fisheries and the effects of closure might provide an expectation for the effect of planned MPAs in similar areas.

Reefs play an important role in the distribution of species associated with hard substrates and are of value for biodiversity conservation. High densities of the habitat building annelid Lanice conchilega also increase local biodiversity. This study describes the benthic biodiversity of a rocky reef and its surrounding sand bottom with dense L. conchilega beds in the Borkum Reef Grounds, north of the island of Schiermonnikoog in the Dutch North Sea. A side-scan sonar survey revealed distinct seabed areas with high acoustic reflections, indicating the presence of hard substrate on the sandy seafloor. To ground truth the side-scan sonar data and make an inventory of the biodiversity of the observed habitats, a multi-method sampling approach (box corer, SCUBA airlift sampler and visual transects, drop-down camera) was used. This revealed (1) rocky reefs: a combination of gravel, stones and rocks; (2) individual rocks in a sandy environment; (3) sand with dense L. conchilega beds (>1500ind·m-2) and (4) sand bottom habitat. A total of 193 taxa were found with many unique species per habitat. Species richness was significantly higher on sand when compared to the rocky reef (NB-GLM; p=0.006), caused by the presence of dense L. conchilega beds (Poisson GLM; p<0.001). Including dense L. conchilega beds as an additional habitat showed that these held a higher species richness than the rocky reefs (NB-GLM; p=0.002), while sand without dense L. conchilega beds did not (NB-GLM; p=0.14). Since the rocky reefs were present on a sandy bottom, the local biodiversity more than doubled with the presence of rocky reefs. The nMDS plot clearly separated the sand and rocky reef communities and also showed a clustering of dense L. conchilega beds within the sand samples. Each method detected unique species, demonstrating the value of a multi-method approach compared to e.g. box coring alone.
