Abstract

There is no definitive knowledge of which of several concurrent processes ultimately results in unstable combustion within liquid rocket chambers employing shear coaxial injectors. Possible explanations are a detrimental change in the atomization characteristics due to a decrease in the gas-to-liquid velocity ratio, a change in the gas side injector pressure drop allowing acoustic coupling to the propellant feed system or the disappearance of a stabilizing recirculation region at the base of the LOX post. The aim of this research effort is to investigate these proposed mechanisms under conditions comparable to actual engine operation. Spray characterization was accomplished with flash photography and planar laser imaging to examine the overall spray morphology and liquid jet breakup processes and with a PDPA to quantify the spatial distribution of droplet size and mean axial velocity. A simplified stability model based on the Rayleigh criterion was constructed for the flow dynamics occurring within the chamber and injector to evaluate the potential coupling between the chamber and injector acoustic modes and was supported by high frequency measurements of chamber and injector pressure oscillations. To examine recirculation within the LOX post recess, velocity measurements were performed in the recess region by means of LDV. Present experiments were performed under noncombusting conditions using LOX/GH2 stimulants at pressures up to 4 MPa.

Abstract

Although stable operating regimes for cryogenic coaxial injectors have been empirically determined, there is no knowledge of the spray characteristics corresponding to stable operation, or the physical processes which produce the atomization patterns that result in stable or unstable operation. The current engineering method for determining the stable operating regime of a cryogenic coaxial injector is the 'hydrogen temperature ramping' method, however there is no definitive knowledge of whether the hydrogen temperature influences the chamber stability by decreasing the injected gas velocity, by affecting a recirculation region at the base of the LOX Post, or by changing the pressure drop across the injector, allowing chamber pressure oscillations to couple to the fuel feed system. Results for the injector response from a linearized lumped-element model are presented as a function of temperature and frequency. LDV measurements in the recess region at the base of the LOX post show reverse flow indicative of a recirculation region. Finally, Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) measurements of droplet size and velocity distributions are discussed for a coaxial injector element similar to the SSME preburner element operating with water and air at atmospheric pressure and liquid and gaseous nitrogen at 20 bars.

Abstract

The purpose was to assess effects of intrapericardially deposited adipose-derived stem cells (ADSC) as a source of angiogenic factors on cryoinjury infarction. To enhance this effect and reduce incorporation of ADSC into tissue, the cells were immobilized in agarose gel patches transplanted onto cryoinjured epicardium. In domestic pigs (15–20 kg) the left ventricular (LV) anterior wall of exposed hearts was cryoinjured using aluminum rod (Φ=25 mm) cooled in liquid nitrogen. Sterilized circular patches made of agarose gel were placed in a nylon bag and sutured to cryoinjured epicardium. In 4 pigs, the patches contained 650,000 human ADSCs; in control animals patches were cell-free (n,=,2) or no patches were implanted (n,=,2). Cine and T1-weighted MRI was performed in vivo weekly (4 weeks) after injury using a 3 T imager. Following baseline imaging, a double bolus of gadopentate dimeglumine was injected (GdDTPA, 0.05 and 0.15 mmol/kg) and serial short axis images were acquired. In the 4-week ADSC-treated group, 2 pigs were assessed using GdDTPA and 2 pigs were assessed using MnCl2 (70 micromol/kg/14 min). In all pigs, 5 × 106 NIR fluorescent microspheres (15 µm FMS, 645/680 nm) were injected into the hearts, which were excised, sliced and examined with fluorescence imaging for FMS content. Triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining was used to determine necrotic areas. Four-week infarction areas were hypokinetic and appeared hyperintensive on Gd-enhanced MR images, hypointensive on Mn-enhanced images, and were TTC-negative. First-pass Gd enhancement kinetics was faster in the infarct area of ADSC-treated hearts: 152 ± 89 vs 54 ± 5.3% of normal in control (p = 0.03). Accordingly, FMS fluorescence was much higher in the treated infarcts (144 ± 59% of remote, n = 4) relative to control hearts (58 ± 13%, n = 4), which correlated with 3 times higher microvascular density in treated hearts. LV wall thickening was partially restored by ADSC treatment. ADSC-containing patches attached to cryoinjured epicardium greatly improved perfusion and microvascular density of scar tissue

Abstract

The production of very neutron-deficient isotopes near 100 Sn has been investigated by using on-line mass separation of evaporation residues produced by heavy-ion induced complete-fusion reactions. We measured the cross sections for 99 Cd, 100 In, 101 Sn and 102 In via 58 Ni q 58 Ni fusion reactions followed by cluster emission, and via 58 Ni q 50 Cr fusion reactions accompanied by evaporation of protons, neutrons or a particles. Both types of reactions yield similar cross sections for the production of exotic nuclei near 100 Sn. The data are discussed in comparison with results obtained from statistical-model calculations.

Abstract

The article primarily presents a schematic idea of the operation of innovative ventilation shapes with adjustable performance. Then, it was pre-verified by measuring static pressure on the walls of ordinary fittings and innovative T-type fittings. The presented fittings have features that allow for very precise control of the performance of ventilation streams in various configurations. The most important diagrams in the article show that there are simple methods for distributing air streams, even in mutually perpendicular channels leading to minimized flow losses. The presented results of comparative tests carried out on ordinary and innovative T-shaped fittings show very favorable tendencies which are characterized by a several-dozen-percent drop in pressure in similar measurement ranges.
