Water is critical to sustainable development as well as socio-economic development, energy and food production, healthy ecosystems and human survival. Water is also central to climate change adaptation, being a critical link between society and the environment. Water is directly related to the realization of human rights. As the world's population grows, there is an increasing need to balance all competing commercial demands for water so that communities have sufficient resources to meet their needs. The drinking water problem of Azerbaijan is becoming increasingly urgent. Not only in Azerbaijan, the increasing probability of facing a shortage of drinking water prompts many countries to think more seriously about solving the problem. Collection and treatment of urban wastewater is important to protect human health and the environment. Nationally, municipal wastewater treatment plants respond to widely varying conditions such as the variety of substances in the sewage, the size of the population served, the requirements of the receiving waters, and the local climate. Much has been done to collect and treat urban wastewater, but new pressures such as adapting to climate change, providing facilities in urban and rural areas, and combating newly identified pollutants require significant investment in addition to maintaining existing infrastructure. Energy costs and scarce resources should be a reason to improve water efficiency. They also provide opportunities for urban wastewater treatment to further contribute to the circular economy through, for example, energy production, water reuse and material recycling.
