There is considerable interest in dendritic solidification because of the influence dendrites have in the determination of microstructure, and thereby in the physical properties of cast metals and alloys. Current theories and models of dendritic growth generally couple diffusion effects in the melt with the physics of the interface. Data and subsequent analysis prior of the tip growth speed and radii of thermal succinonitrile dendrites in the near-convection free, on-orbit, free-fall environment demonstrate that these theories yield predictions that are reasonably in agreement with the results of experiment. However, data and analysis for assessing the interfacial physics component of theory are not sufficiently detailed or definitive. To study fundamental aspects of dendritic interface stability, we are measuring and modeling the kinetics and morphology of dendrites as they evolve from one well-defined steady state at a pre-set supercooling, through a transient stage, to a different well-defined steady state. More specifically, we subject succinonitrile dendrites, growing under steady-state conditions, to a rapid change in pressure. This leads to a rapid change in thermal driving force from the corresponding change in both the equilibrium melting temperature due to the Clapeyron effect, and a change in the far-field temperature due to adiabatic temperature changes in the bulk liquid and solid. Subsequently, we observe transformations from a well-characterized initial state into a new steady-state. Initial data reveal that the dendrite tip velocity changes almost as fast as the pressure charges, while the tip radius changes occur more slowly, taking from 10 60 seconds depending on the size of the step change and the final supercooling. Computer modeling of this process shows both agreements and disagreements with the experimental data. In making these observations and measurements, we are gaining new understandings of interfacial dynamics and state-selection physics.

Diffusion-limited, capillarity-driven, coarsening of precipitates is an important and intensively studied phenomenon. Coarsening can occur among several microstructural constituents ranging from the primary phases to widely dispersed precipitates. Moreover, coarsening of three-dimensional (3-D) phase domains, occurring via mass transport through a two-dimensional (2-D) diffusion field (called mixed-dimensional phase coarsening) is a cooperative phenomenon that is of practical importance, especially in thin film technologies and catalysis. A primary objective of our current work is to focus on the details of evolving microstructures through a study of 'island' formation in heteroepitaxial film/substrate systems. Whereas this work has been designed for space-based coarsening studies, which require long-duration quality microgravity to observe 3-D Ostwald ripening, a significant amount of work has been performed during ground-based studies to observe diffusional coarsening in a liquid-liquid two-phase system. We have performed the experiment at an isopycnic point to maximize exclusion of gravity-based system disturbance. This has allowed observations of 3-D droplets, immobilized by container wall contact, undergoing coarsening by 2-D diffusion for the required long times (approximately 4 months) using a holographic imaging technique. Although such systems may not be as reliant on long-duration microgravity processing as 3-D systems are, they are of direct relevance to so-called mixed-dimensional coarsening and to the study of heterostructures grown by thin-film technique

Dendritic solidification is one of the simplest examples of pattern formation where a structureless melt evolves into a ramified crystalline microstructure; it is a common mode of solidification in many materials, but especially so in metals and alloys. There is considerable engineering interest in dendrites because of the role dendrites play in the determination of microstructure, and thereby in influencing the physical properties of cast metals and alloys. Dendritic solidification provides important examples of non-equilibrium physics, pattern formation dynamics, and models for computational condensed matter and material physics. Current theories of dendritic growth generally couple diffusion effects in the melt with the physics introduced by the interface. Unfortunately, in terrestrial based experiments, convective effects in the melt alter the growth process in such a manner as to prevent definitive analysis of convective, diffusive or interfacial effects. Thus, the effective elimination of convection in the melt by operating experiments on orbit were required to produce high-fidelity data needed for achieving further progress. This simple fact comprised the scientific justification for the IDGE.

The RIDGE effort continues the aegis of the earlier, NASA-sponsored, Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE) series of experiments through the continued analysis of microgravity data acquired during these earlier space flights. The preliminary observations presented here demonstrate that there are significant differences between SCN and the more anisotropic PVA dendrites. The side branch structure becomes amplified only further behind the tip, and the interface shape is generally wider (i.e. more hyperbolic than parabolic) in PVA than in SCN. These characteristics are seen to affect the process of heat transport. Additionally, the dendrites grown during the fourth United States Microgravity Payload (USMP-4) exhibit time-dependent growth characteristics and may not always have reached steady-state growth during the experiment.

Dendritic solidification is a common mode of solidification. It is also an important model problem in nonequilibrium physics and pattern formation physics. Current theories couple the transfer of latent heat with selection mechanisms at the interface. Measurements of succinonitrile (SCN) dendrites in microgravity show reasonable agreement between heat transfer predictions and experiment. However, data and analysis for assessing interfacial physics theories are less definitive. We are studying, and will present data on, transient effects in dendritic growth of SCN. We employ the Clapeyron pressure/melting temperature effect to make a rapid change in a sample's hydrostatic pressure, and thereby rapidly change the specimen's melting temperature, forcing the dendrite to select a new steady-state. These initial measurements show some surprising and non-intuitive effects.

Dendrites describe the tree-like crystal morphology commonly assumed in many material systems--particularly in metals and alloys that freeze from supercooled or supersaturated melts. There remains a high level of engineering interest in dendritic solidification because of the role of dendrites in the determination of cast alloy microstructures. Microstructure plays a key role in determining the physical properties of cast or welded products. In addition, dendritic solidification provides an example of non-equilibrium physics and is one of the simplest non-trivial examples of dynamic pattern formation, where an amorphous melt, under simple starting conditions, evolves into a complex ramified microstructure. Although it is well-known that dendritic growth is controlled by the transport of latent heat from the moving solid-melt interface as the dendrite advances into a supercooled melt, an accurate, and predictive model has not been developed. Current theories consider: 1) the transfer of heat or solute from the solid-liquid interface into the melt, and 2) the interfacial crystal growth and growth selection physics for the interface. However, the effects of gravity-induced convection on the transfer of heat from the interface prevent either element from being adequately tested solely under terrestrial conditions. The Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE) constituted a series of three NASA-supported microgravity experiments, all of which flew aboard the space shuttle, Columbia. This experimental space flight series was designed and operated to grow and record dendrite solidification in the absence of gravity-induced convective heat transfer, and thereby produce a wealth of benchmark-quality data for testing solidification scaling laws. The data collection from the on-orbit phase of the IDGE flight series is now complete. We are currently completing analyses and moving towards final data archiving.

The study of steady-state dendritic growth has both validated many element of transport phenomena in dendritic growth, and yielded many new insights. Further development in simulation and modeling are needed, as is further understanding of the role of selection or scaling in dendritic growth. The TDSE contributes to the further study of dendritic phenomena by carefully measuring and modeling transient effects on dendritic growth. The major challenge encountered in measuring and analyzing the transient behavior of isothermal dendrites is defining precisely the initial conditions from which or to which the dendrite evolves. Our proposed pressure-mediated TDSE microgravity experiment, obviates this difficulty, because the transient occurs between two well-characterized steady-states, rather than between an ill-defined initial state and the final steady state. The major results expected are unique data on transient behavior that will extend the scientific bounds from the now well-understood thermal effects, and provide insight into interfacial dynamics where open questions remain.

The growth of dendrites is one of the commonly observed forms of solidification encountered when metals and alloys freeze under low thermal gradients, as occurs in most casting and welding processes. In engineering alloys, the details of the dendritic morphology directly relates to important material responses and properties. Of more generic interest, dendritic growth is also an archetypical problem in morphogenesis, where a complex pattern evolves from simple starting conditions. Thus, the physical understanding and mathematical description of how dendritic patterns emerge during the growth process are of interest to both scientists and engineers. The Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE) is a basic science experiment designed to measure, for a fundamental test of theory, the kinetics and morphology of dendritic growth without complications induced by gravity-driven convection. The IDGE, a collaboration between Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy NY, and NASA's Lewis Research Center (LeRC) was developed over a ten year period from a ground-based research program into a space flight experiment. Important to the success of this flight experiment was provision of in situ near-real-time teleoperations during the spaceflight experiment.

Flow field characteristics predicted from a computational model show that the dynamical state of the flow, for practical crystal growth conditions of mercurous chloride, can range from steady to unsteady. Evidence that the flow field can be strongly dominated by convection for ground-based conditions is provided by the prediction of asymmetric velocity profiles bv the model which show reasonable agreement with laser Doppler velocimetry experiments in both magnitude and planform. Unsteady flow is shown to be correlated with a degradation of crystal quality as quantified by light scattering pattern measurements, A microgravity experiment is designed to show that an experiment performed with parameters which yield an unsteady flow becomes steady (diffusive-advective) in a microgravity environment of 10(exp -3) g(sub 0) as predicted by the model, and hence yields crystals with optimal quality.

The local bifurcation of the flow field, during physical vapor transport for a parametric range of experimental interest, shows that its dynamical state ranges from steady to aperiodic. Comparison of computationally predicted velocity profiles with laser doppler velocimetry measurements shows reasonable agreement in both magnitude and planform. Correlation of experimentally measured crystal quality with the predicted dynamical state of the flow field shows a degradation of quality with an increase in Rayleigh number. The global bifurcation of the flow field corresponding to low crystal quality indicates the presence of a traveling wave for Ra = 1.09 x 10(exp 5). For this Rayleigh number threshold a chaotic transport state occurs. However, a microgravity environment for this case effectively stabilizes the flow to diffusive-advective and provides the setting to grow crystals with optimal quality.

We address the problem of diffusional interactions in a finite sized cluster of spherical particles for volume fractions, V(sub v) in the range 0-0.01. We determined the quasi-static monopole diffusion solution for n particles distributed at random in a continuous matrix. A global mass conservation condition is employed, obviating the need for any external boundary condition. The numerical results provide the instantaneous (snapshot) growth or shrinkage rate of each particle, precluding the need for extensive time-dependent computations. The close connection between these snapshot results and the coarsegrained kinetic constants are discussed. A square-root dependence of the deviations of the rate constants from their zero volume fraction value is found for the higher V(sub v) investigated. This behavior is consistent with predictions from diffusion Debye-Huckel screening theory. By contrast, a cube-root dependence, reported in earlier numerical studies, is found for the lower V(sub v) investigated. The roll-over region of the volume fraction where the two asymptotics merge depends on the number of particles, n, alone. A theoretical estimate for the roll-over point predicts that the corresponding V(sub v) varies as n(sup -2), in good agreement with the numerical results.

The Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE) is a NASA space flight experiment which flew as part of the United States Microgravity Payload (USMP-2), in early 1994. The IDGE measured dendritic growth rates, tip radii, and crystal morphologies of ultra-pure succinonitrile (CN-(CH2)2-CN) at supercoolings in the range from 0.05 - 2.0 K. Data taken in the form of slow-scan binary digitized images telemetered to the ground from orbit in near-real time, combined with the IDGE terrestrial data set, provide the first quantitative assessment of various theories on dendritic solidification and the effects of convection on dendritic growth.

We measured dendritic tip velocities in pure succinonitrile (SCN) in microgravity. using a sequence of telemetered binary images sent to Earth from the Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-62). Growth velocities were measured as a function of the supercooling over the range 0.05-1.5 K. Microgravity observations show that buoyancy-induced convection alters the growth kinetics of SCN dendrites at supercooling as high as 1.3 K. Also, the dendrite velocity data measured under microgravity agree well with the Ivantsov paraboloidal diffusion solution when coupled to a scaling constant of sigma(sup *) = 0.0157.

The linear stability of a modulated Taylor-Couette system when the inner cylindrical boundary consists of a crystalline solid-liquid interface is considered. Both experimentally and in numerical calculations it is found that the two-phase system is significantly less stable than the analogous rigid-walled system for materials with moderately large Prandtl numbers. A numerical treatment based on Floquet theory is described, which gives results that are in good agreement with preliminary experimental findings. In addition, this instability is further examined by carrying out a formal asymptotic expansion of the solution in the limit of large Prandtl number. In this limit the Floquet analysis is considerably simplified, and the linear stability of the modulated system can be determined to leading order through a conventional stability analysis, without recourse to Floquet theory. The resulting simplified problem is then studied for both the narrow gap geometry and for the case of a finite gap. It is surprising that the determination of the linear stability of the two-phase system is considerably simpler than that of the rigid-walled system, despite the complications introduced by the presence of the crystal-melt interface.

The isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE), to be performed on three of the United States Microgravity Payload (USMP) flights, starting with USMP-2, is designed to provide microgravity data on dendritic growth for a critical test of theory. Ground based test data using succinonitrile (SCN), from both a flight growth chamber and a laboratory growth chamber, are compared to theoretical calculations of dendritic tip velocities and radii. The comparison shows that the data from the flight chamber are consistent with the historical data and that dendritic growth in a microgravity environment should exhibit significant differences from the dendritic growth of SCN at g sub 0.

Single crystals of mixed mercurous halides Hg2X2 (where X = Cl and Br) were grown by the physical vapor transport process. Structural parameters and optical properties were determined to examine the suitability of mixed crystals for acoustooptic devices. Mixed crystals grown in the low concentration region did not show striations or banding. Crystals grown in the high concentration region showed considerable inhomogeneity in the refractive index. Since we had used identical thermal conditions, inhomogeneity was attributed to the solutal convection caused by the difference in densities of mercurous chloride and bromide vapors. A low concentration of dopant did not change the acoustic velocity of the parent components.

Lead(II) bromide was purified by a combination of directional freezing and zone-refining methods. Differential thermal analysis of the lead bromide showed that a destructive phase transformation occurs below the melting temperature. This transformation causes extensive cracking, making it very difficult to grow a large single crystal. Energy of phase transformation for pure lead bromide was determined to be 24.67 cal/g. To circumvent this limitation, crystals were doped by silver bromide which decreased the energy of phase transformation. The addition of silver helped in achieving the size, but enhanced the inhomogeneity in the crystal. The acoustic attenuation constant was almost identical for the pure and doped (below 3000 ppm) crystals.

Single crystals of pure and doped lead bromide were grown by the Bridgman method in different convective conditions. The convection level was varied by changing the thermal and solutal Rayleigh number. The homogeneity in refractive index, and hence the optical quality, was estimated by examining the optical distortion, birefringence interferograms, and laser scattering through the crystal. The optical quality of the crystal varied significantly with the variation of convection level during the crystal growth. The critical concentration of the solute was estimated for several values of growth velocity by numerical analysis at the thermal gradient of 20 K/cm.

Thermodynamic calculations were carried out for the Hg-X-O system (X = Cl, Br, I) to identify the potential sources of contamination and relative stability of oxides and oxy-halide phases. The effect of excess mercury vapor pressure on the optical quality of mercurous halide crystal was studied by growing several mercurous chloride crystals from mercury-rich composition. The optical quality of crystals was examined by birefringence interferometry and laser scattering studies. Crystals grown in slightly mercury-rich composition showed improved optical quality relative to stoichiometric crystals.

The NASA Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE), which is to be performed on three of the U.S. Microgravity Payload flights, is discussed. IDGE is designed to investigate dendritic growth under microgravity. The theory of dendritic growth and the effects of gravity on it are reviewed, and the IDGE experimental apparatus, design, and ground-based tests are discussed.

NASA has planned three flight experiments, designated as the Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE), to be performed on three of the United States Microgravity Payload (USMP) flights. IDGE is designed to provide microgravity data on dendritic growth for a critical test of theory. Terrestrial gravity, g sub 0, and the associated phenomenon of buoyancy driven convection, prevent a truly quantitative test of pure, diffusocapillary dendritic growth theory. However, recent theoretical analysis provides a fluid mechanics framework for estimating the effects of reduced gravity on the dendritic solidification of pure succinonitrile (SCN), the model material selected for the first IDGE flight. The results (dendritic tip radii and velocities) of the recent fully integrated ground-based tests on the IDGE prototype engineering hardware is in general agreement with the 'historical' ground based data for SCN. At undercoolings of 0.5 K or less, a microgravity environment of approximately 10 exp -3 g sub 0 or lower would have a significant difference from the g sub 0 dendritic growth of SCN.

A laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV) system capable of measuring velocities as low as 10 exp -5 m/s is presented, and a calibration system for determining the accuracy of the LDV system at these velocities is described. The results obtained in mercurous chloride crystal grown in cylindrical ampoules at 300 C, using physical vapor transport (PVT) methods, are presented. It is concluded that the overall flow pattern observed is a unicellular, asymmetric pattern between Rayleigh number of 125 and 250.

The Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE) has been designed to provide microgravity data on dendritic growth for a critical test of theory. This paper updates progress on constructing a crystal growth chamber suitable for space flight. The IDGE chamber is constructed from glass and stainless steel and is hermetically sealed by electron beam welds and glass-metal seals. Initial tests of the chambers sample's melting point plateau show that the new chamber design is capable of preserving the 99.9995 percent purity of succinonitrile. Dendrite growth can be initiated in the center of the IDGE chamber by means of thermo-electric coolers and a capillary injector tube (stinger). The new IDGE chamber is ready for fully integrated tests with the prototype IDGE engineering hardware at NASA's Lewis Research Center.
