2. An Examination of the Association between Learning Modality and Academic Achievement during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

This causal-comparative ex-post-facto study examined the association between learning modality and academic achievement during the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic created an environment in which multiple modalities of learning, including blended and remote classrooms, were occurring simultaneously, challenging the existing practices of the in-person model, around which most K-12 education is organized. This study analyzed a total of 3,182 public and charter K-8 schools in Illinois to determine how school-level teacher assessments of Ambitious Instruction, as measured by the 5Essentials, and student performance on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) math and reading assessments changed from 2019, prior to the pandemic, to 2021 by learning modality. The study also examined the impact of socioeconomic status and building enrollment on these changes. Although Ambitious Instruction ratings and IAR math and reading proficiency decreased across all learning modalities from 2019 to 2021, significantly greater decreases were observed among schools that chose remote learning, while in-person schools experienced the least decline. No statistically significant differences based on the socioeconomic status or size of the schools were observed, although a significant association between socioeconomic status and modality was observed, with poorer schools more likely to opt for remote learning than richer schools, suggesting that challenges to implementation may have negatively impacted the potential effectiveness of this modality. 14. Patterns of diuretic use in the intensive care unit.

Abstract

PurposeTo inform future outcomes research on diuretics, we sought to describe modern patterns of diuretic use in the intensive care unit (ICU), including diuretic type, combination, and dosing. We also investigated two possible quality improvement targets: furosemide dosing in renal impairment and inclusion of an initial bolus with continuous furosemide infusions.Materials and methodsIn this descriptive study, we retrospectively studied 46,037 adult ICU admissions from a publicly available database of patients in an urban, academic medical center.ResultsDiuretics were employed in nearly half (49%, 22,569/46,037) of ICU admissions. Mechanical ventilation, a history of heart failure, and admission to the post-cardiac surgery unit were associated with a higher frequency of diuretic use. Combination use of different diuretic classes was uncommon. Patients with severely impaired kidney function were less likely to receive diuretics. Furosemide was by far the most common diuretic given and the initial intravenous dose was only 20 mg in more than half of ICU admissions. Among patients treated with a continuous infusion, 30% did not receive a bolus on the day of infusion initiation.ConclusionsPatterns of diuretic use varied by patient-specific factors and by ICU type. Diuretic dosing strategies may be suboptimal.

18. Training Paraprofessionals to Implement the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)

Abstract

Based on Skinner's "Verbal Behavior" (1957), the picture exchange communication system (PECS) was designed to teach children with autism functional verbal behavior. Much research has demonstrated the effectiveness and efficiency of PECS in building verbal behavior. However, because PECS training is typically presented in a group format and later discontinued (Howlin et al., 2007), decreases in treatment integrity may result in loss of effectiveness and durability. Hence, more intensive approaches may be necessary to establish, generalize, and maintain PECS delivery skills for educators beyond those demonstrated in workshop or group consultation trainings. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to examine the effects of a feedback model developed by Marcus, Swanson, and Vollmer (2001) to teach paraprofessionals to implement PECS with a high degree of integrity using single subject design methodology. The study examined the performance of paraprofessionals and students, as well as the extension and maintenance of PECs implementation. Implications for PECS training, and PECS training protocol are discussed in establishing and maintaining PECS delivery with integrity. Abstract

Sound design is a comparatively young member of the theatrical design family. Computer technology for sound and music, much of which emerged over this past decade, continues to become cheaper and more widely available, making intricate sonic designs more accessible now than in the past for designers and theaters alike. While this is a big step for the art of sound design, the field is still adolescent in comparison to the scenic, costume, and lighting design fields. Sound design has become a regular part of the creation of modern theatre; that said, modern sound designers might collaborate with other theater professionals who trained without significant collaboration with or influence from sound designers and sound design. As such, collaborative practices between a sound designer and the rest of a theatrical team continue to develop. Through this thesis, I hope to provide a comprehensive snapshot of the role of sound design and sound designers in modern theatre, and to illuminate important strategies for successful collaboration between sound designers and a theatrical team.

24. Gender and the Association between Discrimination and Psychological Distress Amongst African Americans in the California Quality of Life Survey

Abstract

Racial discrimination serves as a psychosocial stressor with implications for health, including mental health. Previous research indicates that while African American men report more discrimination events, African American women are at greater risk for some psychiatric conditions. The responses from Black respondents to the California Quality of Life Survey (Cal-QOL) in 2005 and 2007 were analyzed to test the hypothesis that gender moderates the association between discrimination and distress, so that women are more susceptible to the deleterious effects of discrimination than men. Results of a multinomial regression model indicate that High perceived discrimination was associated with having 4.1 times the odds of severe distress (95% CI 1.4, 13; p=.01) after controlling for other factors. There were no gender differences in perceived non-specific discrimination (χ2= 4.0; p=.14), but women were at 43 times the odds of men for moderate distress (95% CI 8.1, 226; p

Abstract

The advent of combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) plants introduces a new field of research and experimentation to optimize the use of such a system. A CCHP plant offers higher flexibility and efficiency, and lower greenhouse gas emissions in comparison to conventional stand-alone power production systems. As such, this paper aims to utilize actual data of power producing units to design and optimize a CCHP plant. A fuzzy mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed to select the appropriate processes to be deployed given product demand and environmental footprint constraints. The results would aid plant owners in the design of a CCHP plant. The results showed an optimal configuration of the plant consisting of a gas internal-combustion generator, a gas boiler, and a vapor absorption chiller. The environmental footprint limit was seen to be the limiting factor for the proposed optimized model to produce powers near the lower limit of the product demand constraints.
