2. A computational study on imputation methods for missing environmental data

Abstract

Data acquisition and recording in the form of databases are routine operations. The process of collecting data, however, may experience irregularities, resulting in databases with missing data. Missing entries might alter analysis efficiency and, consequently, the associated decision-making process. This paper focuses on databases collecting information related to the natural environment. Given the broad spectrum of recorded activities, these databases typically are of mixed nature. It is therefore relevant to evaluate the performance of missing data processing methods considering this characteristic. In this paper we investigate the performances of several missing data imputation methods and their application to the problem of missing data in environment. A computational study was performed to compare the method missForest (MF) with two other imputation methods, namely Multivariate Imputation by Chained Equations (MICE) and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN). Tests were made on 10 pretreated datasets of various types. Results revealed that MF generally outperformed MICE and KNN in terms of imputation errors, with a more pronounced performance gap for mixed typed databases where MF reduced the imputation error up to 150%, when compared to the other methods. KNN was usually the fastest method. MF was then successfully applied to a case study on Quebec wastewater treatment plants performance monitoring. We believe that the present study demonstrates the pertinence of using MF as imputation method when dealing with missing environmental data.

11. Structural and environmental performance of evolving industrial symbiosis: A multidimensional analysis

Abstract

Industrial symbiosis (IS) involves networks of organizations collaborating through flow exchanges. Scientific research has shown that such systems are able to provide benefits at the environmental level. Structural organization and stability were also studied, as they are linked to resilience (maintenance of activity over time), especially with ecological network analysis (ENA), which considers several dimensions in the assessment of a network organization. Studies combining ENA and environmental assessment are lacking in the literature; therefore, the links between the two dimensions are not well documented. The intention of this study was to fill this gap by analyzing structural and environmental performance simultaneously using ENA and a life-cycle-analysis-based approach focusing on the structural topology of IS. The results show that the two dimensions do not strictly influence each other. Structural performance was found to vary depending on the network structure topology, whereas environmental performance was influenced by the network complexity. To ensure the continuation of IS benefits, the two dimensions should be considered in the decision-making process in IS planification, even if they are independent evaluation criteria. Tradeoffs should be based on IS development possibilities and territorial needs.

16. Identification of coastal defence measures best adapted to mitigate hazards in specific coastal systems: Development of a dynamic literature meta-analysis methodology

Abstract

The decision-making process of the coastal defence measures (CDMs) is complex and filled with uncertainties due to site-specific interactions between hydrodynamic and geomorphological conditions, which have repercussions on the ecological and social aspects of coastal communities. Scientific knowledge of the effects of CDMs contributes to the reduction in inherent uncertainties and facilitates the decision-making and design processes. The goal of this article is to present an algorithm designed to evaluate and hierarchize CDMs in relation to different coastal environments. Drawn from 411 published scientific case studies, a total of 1709 authors’ observation statements regarding the effects of CDMs on the study sites’ environmental features (type of coast, type of substrate, tidal range, and wave climate) were entered in a database, categorized, and weighted according to a qualitative scale. The algorithm processes the information by establishing a correspondence between user-selected environment features and those stocked in the database, and it evaluates user-selected CDMs in relation to the specified coastal characteristics by identifying, collating, and rating the effects as observed in similar contexts. The result is a tool able to process, structure, and concretize scientific knowledge regarding CDMs and their effects on coastal systems. It is complementary to existing tools currently used in the decision-making and design processes of the CDMs. The results present the hierarchization of CDMs according to a multilevel aggregated structure, which can be used in different ways by coastal managers, decision-makers, and engineers. 17. Multicriteria decision analysis to assist in the selection of coastal defence measures: Involving coastal managers and professionals in the identification and weighting of criteria

Abstract

Coastal socio-ecological systems are complex adaptive systems with nonlinear changing properties and multi-scale dynamics. They are influenced by unpredictable coastal hazards accentuated by the effects of climate change, and they can quickly be altered if critical thresholds are crossed. Additional pressures come from coastal activities and development, both of which attracting stakeholders with different perspectives and interests. While coastal defence measures (CDMs) have been implemented to mitigate coastal hazards for centuries, a lack of knowledge and tools available to make informed decision has led to coastal managers favouring the choice of seawalls or rock armours with little consideration for socio-ecological systems features, and stakeholders’ priorities. Though it is not currently widely applied in coastal zone management, multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) is a tool that can be useful to facilitate decision making. PROMETHEE, an outranking method, was chosen to support the multicriteria decision analysis for the evaluation of CDMs in the context of four study sites characterized by distinct environmental features. The aim was to determine the relevance and benefits of a MCDA by integrating coastal zone stakeholders in a participatory decision-making process in order to select CDMs that are better adapted to the whole socio-ecological system. First, in a series of five workshops, stakeholders were asked to identify and weigh criteria that were relevant to their local conditions. Second and third, CDMs were evaluated in relation to each criterion within the local context, then, hierarchized. Initial results show that vegetation came first in three of the four sites, while rock armour ranked first in the fourth site. Abstract

As waste management systems are constantly evolving, each and every decision taken today will influence future actions. Among the problems encountered, the selection of a site to implement new facilities, no matter their type, is a significant issue given the related social, economic and environmental constraints. Decision makers thus require new tools to compare the various options available and to assess the impacts on the system. The mathematical approaches currently used to solve the land location issues are inadequate for waste management. In particular, these approaches cannot consider all impacts of waste management nor the route characteristics (length, traffic constraints, capacity). To remedy these shortcomings, this paper presents effective waste management as a decision-making tool for land management, especially location issues. Two case studies are presented to illustrate the benefits of the proposed approach. Key words: land management, decision-making, waste management, systematic approach, positioning, location, network. Les systemes de gestion des dechets etant en constante evolution, chacune des decisions prises aujourd'hui aura une influence sur les actions futures. Parmi les difficultes rencontrees, la selection d'un site pour l'implantation de nouvelles installations, quelle que soit leur nature, represente un enjeu majeur en raison des contraintes sociales, economiques et environnementales qui s'y rattachent. En consequence, les decideurs reclament de nouveaux outils qui leur permettront de comparer les differentes options qui s'offrent a eux et d'en evaluer les impacts sur le systeme. Actuellement, les approches mathematiques utilisees pour resoudre les problemes de localisation sur un territoire sont inadequates pour la gestion des dechets. Notamment, ces approches ne permettent pas de considerer l'ensemble des impacts attribues a la gestion des dechet sainsi que les particularites associees aux trajets (longueur, contraintes de circulation, capacite). Dans le but de corriger ces lacunes, le present article porte sur l'utilisation de la gestion dynamique des dechets (GDD) comme outil d'aide a la decision pour la gestion territoriale, et plus particulierement pour les problemes de localisation. 26. Testing the environmental kuznets curve hypothesis in North America's Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) countries

Abstract

In force since 1994, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is still the most comprehensive agreement ever developed, conforming to the world’s largest trade market. However, the environmental impacts cannot be neglected, particularly greenhouse gas emissions. The environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis is revisited, studying Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.A. in relation to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, gross domestic product (GDP), energy, and exergy consumption. Ordinary least squares, vector autoregression, and Granger causality tests are conducted. Additionally, exergy indicators and the human development index (HDI) are proposed. Results for Mexico and the U.S.A. describe similar and interesting outcomes. In the search of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC), the EKC hypothesis is confirmed for Mexico and the U.S.A. However, for Canada, the EKC hypothesis does not stand. The Granger causality test displays the existence of a uni-directional causality running from CO2 emissions to economic growth; a similar behavior was observed while testing the for the exergetic control variables. The most intriguing Granger causal results are those from the U.S.A. A bidirectional relation was observed between exergy intensity and CO2 emissions. Moreover, the EKC curve was plotted by both variables. Furthermore, Mexico’s outcomes reveal that increasing renewable exergy share will decrease CO2 emissions. On the contrary, increasing HDI will grow CO2 emissions. Policy implications arise for NAFTA countries to minimize CO2 emissions by means of the growing renewable energy share. Exergy tools offer an appealing insight into energetic and environmental strategies

31. BiomiMETRIC assistance tool: A quantitative performance tool for biomimetic design

Abstract

This article presents BiomiMETRIC, a quantitative performance tool for biomimetic design. This tool is developed as a complement to the standard ISO 18458 Biomimetics—terminology, concepts, and methodology to quantitatively evaluate the biomimetics performance of a design, a project, or a product. BiomiMETRIC is aimed to assist designers, architects, and engineers to facilitate the use of the biomimetic approach beyond the existing frameworks, and to provide an answer to the following question: How can a quantitative evaluation of biomimetic performance be carried out? The biomimetic quantitative performance tool provides a method of quantitative analysis by combining the biomimetic approach with the impact assessment methods used in life-cycle analysis. Biomimetic design is divided into eight steps. The seventh step deals with performance assessment, verifying that the concept developed is consistent with the 10 sustainable ecosystem principles proposed by the Biomimicry Institute. In the application of the biomimetic quantitative performance tool, stone wool and cork are compared as insulation materials used in biomimetic architecture projects to illustrate the relevance and added value of the tool. Although it is bio-based, cork has a lower biomimetic performance according to the indicators used by the biomimetic quantitative performance tool presented in this article

32. A methodological approach for evaluating brownfield redevelopment projects

Abstract

In recent decades, municipalities around the world have been developing community policies and seeking to apply them in their cities. They use methods for exchanging information and opinions on decisions, policies, plans and strategies and involve and consult with the community and stakeholders in all aspects of the decision-making process. The application of methods for thoughtful planning has become the goal of policy makers to improve the lives of citizens and stop the expansion of the city into the countryside. The aim of this article is to integrate the notion of sustainability into a methodological approach, taking into account the actors involved in the decision-making phases, the objectives, and the local indicators in an urban redevelopment project (brownfield). Our approach is based on an analysis of 21 articles and on a transversal and cross-cutting view of the interdisciplinary themes of sustainable development by inserting the main actors into decision-making in urban projects and by selecting local indicators. We put in place a methodological approach for the evaluation of urban projects that takes into account local expectations. The goal is to identify and classify the elements that are needed for decision making, including the indicators related to environmental and socio-economic components, in order to develop an effective evaluation tool. This research contributes to the knowledge of project evaluation tools in the specific context of a city.

33. Exploring whether data can be represented as a composite unit in form processing using the manufacturing of information approach

Abstract

Data and information quality have been recognized as essential components for improving business efficiency. One approach for the assessment of information quality (IQ) is the manufacturing of information (MI). So far, research using this approach has considered a whole document as one indivisible block, which allows document evaluation only at a general level. However, the data inside the documents can be represented as components, which can further be classified according to content and composition. In this paper, we propose a novel model to explore the effectiveness of representing data as a composite unit, rather than indivisible blocks. The input data sufficiency and the relevance of the information output are evaluated in the example of analyzing an administrative form. We found that the new streamlined form proposed resulted in a 15% improvement in IQ. Additionally, we found the relationship between the data quantity and IQ was not a “simple” correlation, as IQ may increase without a corresponding increase in data quantity. We conclude that our study shows that the representation of data as a composite unit is a determining factor in IQ assessment.

39. Socio-economic indicators for the ex-post evaluation of Brownfield rehabilitation: A case study

Abstract

The reuse of brownfields is becoming a necessary option to meet the current requirements of urban densification and for the preservation of agricultural land, as well as for improvement in the quality of life. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the main objectives and benefits of a rehabilitation project implemented in Canada. The rehabilitation of the brownfield site Lachine-Turcot-Petite Bourgogne in Montréal was analyzed according to four indicators (revenue, average cost of rent, rental usage, and home resale price). The findings of the study demonstrate that the expectations (socio-economic benefits derived from Southwest borough—City of Montréal) of the local community were not respected and that the initial objectives of the project changed during its implementation. In particular, the average rent increased considerably after four years, by 165.47% in the period 2001–2006. The percentage of resident homeowners increased from 89% to about 95% in 10 years, and in the 1996–2014 period the total income per household increased from about $25,000 to about $78,000. We propose an evaluation tool that integrates an ontology of the elements necessary for decision-making and local indicators related to the environmental and socio-economic components with the goal of meeting the expectations of the local community.

40. The integration of socio-economic indicators in the CASBEE-UD evaluation system: A case study

Abstract

The use of tools to measure the degree of sustainability of cities is the approach that receives the most attention in developed countries. However, studies of evaluation tools at the neighborhood level reveal that there are many weaknesses in the most widely-used evaluation systems (LEED-ND, BREEAM Communities, CASBEE-UD). There are ambiguities and gaps in weighting and in scoring and in most cases, there is no mechanism for local adaptability and participation. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the current situation by highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of these evaluation tools in order to integrate social and economic aspects for the improvement of the CASBEE-UD (neighborhood level) evaluation tool. The selection of socio-economic aspects was made through the use of a multi criteria Analysis Hierarchical Process (AHP) and a Geographic Integration System (GIS). The results of this case study indicate that most evaluation tools need to be revised because most do not include socio-economic aspects. We have demonstrated that applying the CASBEE-UD assessment tool integrated with socio-economic aspects to four boroughs in the City of Montreal can measure success by addressing the objectives of sustainable development.

Abstract

Diverse factors may have an impact in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions; thus, three main contributors, energy consumption, gross domestic product (GDP) and an exergy indicator are examined in this work. This study explores the relationship between economic growth and energy consumption by means of the hypothesis postulated for the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC). Panel data for ten countries, from 1971 to 2014 have been studied. Despite a wide gamma of research on the EKC, the role of an exergy variable has not been tested to find the EKC; for this reason, exergy analysis is proposed. Exergy analyses were performed to propose an exergetic indicator as a control variable and a comparative empirical study is developed to study a multivariable framework with the aim to detect correlations between them. High correlation between CO2, GDP, energy consumption, energy intensity and trade openness are observed, on the other hand not statistically significant values for trade openness and energy intensity. The results do not support the EKC hypothesis, however exergy intensity opens the door for future research once it proves to be a useful control variable. Exergy provides opportunities to analyze and implement energy and environmental policies in these countries, with the possibility to link exergy efficiencies and the use of renewables.

Abstract

Globally, industry remains one of the main consumers of fossil fuels; hence, it is one of the prime sources of greenhouse gases (GHG). Exergy analysis methods can be applied to detect the processes inefficiencies. To enhance the interconnection of the exergy and the environment theories, renewable share and exergy efficiency are suggested, in a contribution to sustainability. Exergy analysis is proposed and lifted to study the industrial sector. Even though exergy analysis has been applied to study societies, few studies have been conducted to study emerging-market economies. In 2015, Mexico’s crude oil production was the 12th biggest worldwide, therefore fossil fuels are still the main source to produce energy for the domestic and productive sectors of the Mexican society. Consequently, a prospective study case in Mexico is suggested. The industrial sectorial exergy consumption amounts 1350 PJ in 2000, increasing to 1591 PJ in 2015. Both energy and exergy efficiencies show similar results along the 16 years, with average energy and exergy efficiencies of 78% and 23%, respectively. In comparison with results of similar studies, Mexican exergy efficiency falls within the ranges, yet below the average of 48%. Thus, poor efficiency is still occurring in the sector. Our proposal could provide significant opportunities to become a more sustainable sector, based on the exergetic renewable share and the exergy efficiency.

Abstract

International audience; Montreal has planned the installation of new anaerobic digestion plants by 2019, which will produce energy from waste that could contribute to reduce the city’s dependency on fossil fuels. However, the selective collection of small waste quantities to supply the plants increases the share of transport in the global costs, which threatens the efficiency of the recovery. This work presents a systemic approach to model the anaerobic digestion of food waste, from collection to biogas utilisation. It is used to determine the service area which maximizes the plant net energy production, considering three scenarios of plant locations and two types of alternative fuels produced. Optimal service areas were found for two of the locations, whose size encompassed 99.7% and 99.9% of the city’s total food waste production. Depending on the fuel produced, between 2000 and 3800 cars could be supplied by the plant if 60% of food waste were collected.

Abstract

International audience; La gestion des déchets présente des enjeux économiques et environnementaux majeurs pour nos sociétés, et notamment sur la question des transports. Ceux-ci peuvent ainsi représenter jusqu'à 70% des coûts financiers d'un système de gestion (Uson et al., 2013). Des études ont de plus montré que les systèmes en réseau possèdent une plus grande flexibilité face à la variabilité temporelle des flux de déchets (Rojo, 2009). La difficulté réside donc dans l'optimisation de la configuration spatiale de ces réseaux sur le territoire. La démarche proposée s'appuie sur la loi constructale, énonçant que les réseaux naturels (bronches pulmonaires, bassins versants) dotés d'un degré de liberté jugé suffisant, adoptent une forme qui minimise la résistance des flux qui les traversent (Bejan et Lorente, 2009). La loi constructale a été appliquée au cas de la collecte de déchets des particuliers vers un site de transbordement. Deux types de collecte ont été comparés: une collecte conventionnelle, avec une capacité des camions fixée, et une collecte "constructale", caractérisée par l'intervention en série de deux types de véhicules, de capacités différentes (degré de liberté). L'analyse a été réalisée sur le critère financier associé au transport des déchets. Les résultats ont montré que la collecte constructale devient, d'un point de vue opérationnel, économiquement plus performante qu'une collecte conventionnelle
