Abstract

Compelling evidence is presented that Glauber worked as a laborator (laboratory assistant) for Landgrave Georg of Hesse-Darmstadt from 1632/33 till he was appointed apothecary in Giessen in 1635. During this time, he was also used as laborator by the landgrave's personal physician, Helwig Dieterich. Glauber became a famous chemist, whose alchemical secrets were keenly solicited by King Frederik III of Denmark, Queen Christina of Sweden, and, according to the 1662 diary of Ole Borch, King Charles II of England. A 1689 letter to Queen Christina contains detailed descriptions of Glauber's alkahest, his decomposition and redintegration of saltpeter, and his 'most secret sal armoniacum', which is interpreted here for the first time. Abstract

For general antiferromagnetic 2-spin systems, including the hardcore model and the antiferromagnetic Ising model, there is an $\mathsf{FPTAS}$ for the partition function on graphs of maximum degree $\Delta$ when the infinite regular tree lies in the uniqueness region by Li et al. (2013). Moreover, in the tree non-uniqueness region, Sly (2010) showed that there is no $\mathsf{FPRAS}$ to estimate the partition function unless $\mathsf{NP}=\mathsf{RP}$. The algorithmic results follow from the correlation decay approach due to Weitz (2006) or the polynomial interpolation approach developed by Barvinok (2016). However the running time is only polynomial for constant $\Delta$. For the hardcore model, recent work of Anari et al. (2020) establishes rapid mixing of the simple single-site Markov chain known as the Glauber dynamics in the tree uniqueness region. Our work simplifies their analysis of the Glauber dynamics by considering the total pairwise influence of a fixed vertex $v$ on other vertices, as opposed to the total influence on $v$, thereby extending their work to all 2-spin models and improving the mixing time. More importantly our proof ties together the three disparate algorithmic approaches: we show that contraction of the tree recursions with a suitable potential function, which is the primary technique for establishing efficiency of Weitz's correlation decay approach and Barvinok's polynomial interpolation approach, also establishes rapid mixing of the Glauber dynamics. We emphasize that this connection holds for all 2-spin models (both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic), and existing proofs for correlation decay or polynomial interpolation immediately imply rapid mixing of Glauber dynamics. Our proof utilizes that the graph partition function divides that of Weitz's self-avoiding walk trees, leading to new tools for analyzing influence of vertices., Comment: Section 7 and Appendix E are updated to fix a small error

Abstract

The so-called 'redintegration experiment' is traditionally at the center of the comments on the supposed Boyle/Spinoza controversy. A. Clericuzio influentially argued (criticizing R.A. & M.B. Hall's interpretation) in his publications that, in De nitro, Boyle accounted for the 'redintegration' of saltpeter on the grounds of the chemical properties of corpuscles and "did not make any attempt to deduce them from mechanical principles". By way of contrast, this paper argues that with his De nitro Boyle wanted to illustrate and promote his new corpuscular or mechanical philosophy, and that he made significant attempts to explain the phenomena in terms of mechanical qualities. Boyle had borrowed the 'redintegration experiment' from R. Glauber and used it in an attempt to demonstrate that his philosophy was superior to the Peripatetic and Paracelsian theory. Consequently, Clericuzio's characterization of the Boyle/Spinoza controversy as a discussion between a strict mechanical philosopher and a chemist is problematic and a wider view of Spinoza's interpretation and its context gives a fairer picture. Abstract

Esse artigo tem como proposta analisar a trajetória intelectual de Glauber Rocha, partindo de suas experiências políticas e culturais ao longo dos anos 1970 até se tornar apresentador de televisão. Em sua produção cinematográfica feita no exterior é possível perceber uma aproximação com a linguagem televisiva, numa espécie de preparação inconsciente para atividade que viria desenvolver. Além dos filmes, foram motivo de análise a produção intelectual expressa em livros, jornais e revistas. Em 1979, o cineasta baiano teve uma experiência de apresentador no programa Abertura veiculado pela Rede Tupi de televisão. Apesar de ficar apenas 9 meses no ar, sua participação foi intensa, configurando um dos momentos mais significativos da televisão brasileira da década de 70.

Abstract

We derive a factorization theorem that allows for resummation of small-$x$ logarithms by exploiting Glauber operators in the soft collinear effective field theory. Our analysis is carried out for the hadronic tensor $W^{\mu\nu}$ in deep inelastic scattering, and leads to the definition of a new gauge invariant soft function $S^{\mu\nu}$ that describes quark and gluon emission in the central region. This soft function provides a new framework for extending resummed calculations for coefficient functions to higher logarithmic orders. Our factorization also defines impact factors by universal collinear functions that are process independent, for instance being identical in small-$x$ DIS and Drell-Yan., Comment: 43 pgs

Abstract

Light ion breakup cross sections are important for studies of cosmic ray interactions in the inter-stellar medium or radiation protection considerations of energy deposition in shielding and tissues. Abrasion cross sections for heavy ion reactions have been modeled using the Glauber model in the large mass limit or Eikonal form of the optical potential model. Here we formulate an abrasion model for 4He fragmentation on protons using the Glauber model avoiding the large mass limit and include a model for final state interactions. Calculations of energy dependent total, absorption, elastic and breakup cross sections for 4He into 3He or 3H with proton targets are shown to be in good agreement with experiments for energies from 100 to 100,000 MeV/u. The Glauber model for light nuclei with and without a large mass limit approximation is shown to be in fair agreement above 300 MeV/u, however important differences occur at lower energies.

Abstract

The matter, proton, and neutron density distributions of the ground state, the nuclear root-mean-square (rms) radii, and the elastic form factors of a two- neutron, 8He and 26F, halo nuclei have been studied by the three body model of within the harmonic oscillator (HO) and Woods-Saxon (WS) radial wave functions. The calculated results show that the two body model within the HO and WS radial wave functions succeeds in reproducing the neutron halo in these exotic nuclei. Moreover, the Glauber model at high energy (above several hundred MeV) has been used to calculate the rms radii and reaction cross sections of these nuclei.

Abstract

We have previously developed formulas to calculate the full Glauber series of the elastic scattering between two composite systems their structures are pictured as bag of quarks or as cluster of nucleons. In this work, we have constructed a hybrid model in which the quark-hadron pictures are combined. The elastic cross sections of alpha-proton at center of mass energy √(s )=89 GeV and alpha-alpha at √(s )=126 GeV are evaluated by the hybrid model, the pure quark and conventional nucleon models. The results of different approaches are compared with the experimental data. The comparison shows that the predictions of the three model are identical at forward scattering angles and are significantly different at large momentum transfers. At large angles, the hybrid model calculation fits very well the experimental data than the calculations of quark and nucleon models. The nucleon model prediction provides better agreement with the data than the quark model calculation. The improvement achieved by hybrid model over the quark model at large scattering angles shows that the inclusion of quark–quark interactions is more consistently when the separation between the colliding nucleons is less than the hadron core.

Abstract

The effects of the finite range of the NN force and medium modifications on the nucleon-nucleus total reaction cross sections are investigated in the framework of the Coulomb modified Glauber model (CMGM). Different models of the nuclear densities are used. Comparison with experiments is considered. It is found that the effects of finite range strongly increase the reaction cross section at low and intermediate energies. Medium modifications of the NN cross section reduced the reaction cross section at low and intermediate energies. Both effects are found to be important for a better description of the proton- and neutron-nucleus total reaction cross sections.

Abstract

This paper presents the main results of studies which include both the search for new observables sensitive to novel physical phenomena expected in the formation of baryon rich dense matter formed in the collisions of heavy ions at NICA, and some practical solutions for selection of events with given mean energy density relevant to the number of binary nucleon–nucleon collisions. The behavior of strongly-intensive observables in the ranges of rapidity and momenta available for measurements at the MPD is presented, taking into account the response of the MPD experimental setup and reconstruction in the MpdRoot package. Methods of correction for track losses and inaccurate identification of particle species are discussed. The applicability of the standard Glauber model for the selection of centrality classes at the energies of the NICA collider is being critically reviewed. On the basis of MC simulated data and in accordance with the criteria of anticipated physical analysis, the possibilities of efficient event selection using a new fast detector system for beam–beam collisions monitoring are also briefly discussed.

Abstract

Integrated geophysical surveys using ground penetrating radar (GPR), seismic and electrical resistivity tomography, are carried out to characterize the subsidence, combining with engineering examples in the Glauber's salt mining area in the northwestern region of Gansu Province, China. Because some of the dissolved ore bodies in the Glauber's salt mining area are accompanied by the top and floor, the geophysical response of the floor strata has different physical properties. It is theoretically feasible to use resistivity imaging, GPR and seismic methods to detect. However, it is very necessary to choose an effective geophysical method through experimentation. the limitations of electrical resistivity tomography method and GPR are discussed: in actual work, if the electrical difference between the target body and the surrounding rock is not large enough, the conventional electrical resistivity tomography method cannot be used for fine detection; due to factors such as human noise from the mine's annex, the GPR electromagnetic wave reflection method cannot carry out effective work. Seismic refraction tomography processing is discussed and it was found that the interpretation results of refraction wave tomography can better distinguish the strata in the sub-survey area, which has an excellent effect on the delineation of the range of dissolution and collapse in Glauber's salt mine. Theory and engineering examples prove that seismic refraction wave tomography technology has good applicability in the detection of underground dissolution areas in Glauber's salt mines.

We investigate the fluctuations of anisotropic transverse flow due to the finite number of scatterings in a two-dimensional system of massless particles. Using a set of initial geometries from a Monte Carlo Glauber model, we study how flow coefficients fluctuate about their mean value at the corresponding eccentricity, for several values of the scattering cross section. Abstract

We present a theoretical study on quantum breathers in a XXZ Heisenberg ferromagnet with the single-ion uniaxial anisotropy on a two-dimensional hexangular lattice. In our work, the full quantum and the semiclassical cases are considered, respectively. For the full quantum case, we find that some isolated two-magnon bands can exist below the free magnon band. Physically, each isolated two-magnon band correspond to a two-magnon bound state, which is the simplest quantum breather state. For the semiclassical case, the analytical form of the discrete breather solution with a line localized structure is obtained by adopting the Glauber’s coherent-state representation. Furthermore, the influence of the anisotropy on the properties of quantum breathers is discussed in detail.

Abstract

We consider a system of classical particles, interacting via a smooth, long-range potential, in the mean-field regime, and we optimally analyze the propagation of chaos in form of sharp estimates on many-particle correlation functions. While approaches based on the BBGKY hierarchy are doomed by uncontrolled losses of derivatives, we propose a novel non-hierarchical approach that focusses on the empirical measure of the system and exploits discrete stochastic calculus with respect to initial data in form of higher-order Poincare inequalities for cumulants. This main result allows to rigorously truncate the BBGKY hierarchy to an arbitrary precision on the mean-field timescale, thus justifying the Bogolyubov corrections to mean field. As corollaries, we also deduce a quantitative central limit theorem for fluctuations of the empirical measure, and we discuss the Lenard–Balescu limit for a spatially homogeneous system away from thermal equilibrium.

21. Study of the Exotic Structure of Neutron-Rich 14B and 17C Nuclei Using the Binary Cluster Model

Abstract

The neutron, proton, and matter densities of the ground state of the 14B and 17C exotic nuclei are analyzed using the binary cluster model (BCM). Two density parameterizations are used in BCM calculations namely; Gaussian (GS) and harmonic oscillator (HO) parameterizations. According to the calculated results it found that, the BCM gives a good description of the nuclear structure for above neutron-rich exotic nuclei. The elastic form factors of theunstable 14B and 17C exotic nuclei and those of their stable isotopes 10B and 13C are determined using the plane-wave Born approximation. The main difference between the elastic form factors of unstable nuclei and their stable isotopes is due to the difference in the center of mass correction. Moreover, the Glauber model is used to calculate the matter rms radii and reaction cross section of these exotic nuclei. The calculate results of the mentioned nuclei give a good accordance with the experimental data.

Hồi cứu mô tả loạt ca các bệnh nhân được phẫu thuật van hai lá ít xâm lấn qua đường mở ngực phải nhỏ có nội soi lồng ngực hỗ trợ tại bệnh viện Đại học Y Dược Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh từ tháng 8/2014 đến tháng 8/2018. Có 183 trường hợp phẫu thuật van hai lá, trong đó có 86trường hợp sửa van, tuổi trung bình 50.1 ±12.6 tuổi. Tỷ lệ nam/nữ là 1.2:1. Abstract

The nuclear structure included the matter, proton and neutron densities of the ground state, the nuclear root-mean-square (rms) radii and elastic form factors of one neutron 23O and 24F halo nuclei have been studied by the two body model of within the harmonic oscillator (HO) and Woods-Saxon (WS) radial wave functions. The calculated results show that the two body model within the HO and WS radial wave functions succeed in reproducing neutron halo in these exotic nuclei. Moreover, the Glauber model at high energy has been used to calculated the rms radii and reaction cross section of these nuclei.

Abstract

The production of heavy secondary nuclei in 197Au–197Au collisions at NICA and in 129Xe–129Xe and 208Pb–208Pb collisions at the LHC is calculated by means of Glauber Monte Carlo model connected with nuclear de-excitation models from Geant4 toolkit. The production of secondary nuclei in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions is additionally simulated with the RELDIS model, which predicts the dominance of neutron emission in the electromagnetic interactions of the considered nuclei. As found, Te, I and Au, Hg, Tl nuclei are frequently produced, respectively, in decays of 129Xe and 208Pb excited electromagnetically at the LHC. In contrast, mostly gold isotopes are produced in ultraperipheral collisions at NICA. A possible impact of secondary nuclei on collider components is discussed.

Abstract

We consider the Random-Cluster model on $(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})^d$ with parameters $p \in (0,1)$ and $q\ge 1$. This is a generalization of the standard bond percolation (with open probability $p$) which is biased by a factor $q$ raised to the number of connected components. We study the well known FK-dynamics on this model where the update at an edge depends on the global geometry of the system unlike the Glauber Heat Bath dynamics for spin systems, and prove that for all small enough $p$ (depending on the dimension) and any $q>1$, the FK-dynamics exhibits the cutoff phenomenon at $\lambda_{\infty}^{-1}\log n$ with a window size $O(\log\log n)$, where $\lambda_{\infty}$ is the large $n$ limit of the spectral gap of the process. Our proof extends the Information Percolation framework of Lubetzky and Sly [21] to the Random-Cluster model and also relies on the arguments of Blanca and Sinclair [4] who proved a sharp $O(\log n)$ mixing time bound for the planar version. A key aspect of our proof is the analysis of the effect of a sequence of dependent (across time) Bernoulli percolations extracted from the graphical construction of the dynamics, on how information propagates.

Abstract

The M3Y folding optical potential (OP) is used to analyze 9Be (p,p) 9Be elastic scattering at energies from few to 1000 MeV/nucleon. The M3Y folding-model is used for the real part whereas the volume and surface imaginary parts of OP are taken within the high-energy approximation model that based on the Glauber theory. In addition, the Brieva–Rook approximation is used for the spin-orbit OP. The angular distributions for elastic-scattering cross sections and analyzing powers, reaction, and total cross sections, are calculated using the optical model analysis with the partial-wave expansion method. The results show that these experimental data are reproduced well at a wide range of energy. In addition, clear and interesting energy dependencies are found for the different parts of the OP. A new behavior of the surface imaginary is found at scattering at high energies where the results show that the surface contribution to the imaginary part is very important at high energies as well as at low energies. The volume integrals show systematic energy dependencies. A new energy dependence formula is assumed for M3Y-Paris NN interaction to avoid the negative values of the OP at high energies.

Abstract

The energy loss during jet quenching due to the existence of Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) is calculated by Optical Glaube Monte Carlo model with data collected by ATLAS Collaboration using the LHC detector. An energy loss formula for this situation was modeled and took the form . The nuclear modification factor, RAA, for jets in a 208Pb + 208Pb nucleus collision with rapidity interval of ∣у∣=2.8 and the initial transverse momentum of 50 GeV ≤ pT ≤ 1000 GeV, are compared with various data plots produced by ATLAS Collaboration. RAA results are plotted in different centrality bins, which are defined by the distribution of number of participating nucleons Npart. The RAA value was found to slowly increase at lower transverse momenta and flatten out at higher transverse momenta. The model’s theoretical calculation results turned out to be similar to the plots produced by the ATLAS Collaboration using data from the LHC with small differences for higher systematic uncertainty events.

Abstract

This paper aims at using the functional renormalization group formalism to study the equilibrium states of a stochastic process described by a quench--disordered multilinear Langevin equation. Such an equation characterizes the evolution of a time-dependent $N$-vector $q(t)=\{q_1(t),\cdots q_N(t)\}$ and is traditionally encountered in the dynamical description of glassy systems at and out of equilibrium through the so-called Glauber model. From the connection between Langevin dynamics and quantum mechanics in imaginary time, we are able to coarse-grain the path integral of the problem in the Fourier modes, and to construct a renormalization group flow for effective Euclidean action. In the large $N$-limit we are able to solve the flow equations for both matrix and tensor disorder. The numerical solutions of the resulting exact flow equations are then investigated using standard local potential approximation, taking into account the quench disorder. In the case where the interaction is taken to be matricial, for finite $N$ the flow equations are also solved. However, the case of finite $N$ and taking into account the non-equilibrum process will be considered in a companion investigation., 60 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

We provide further evidence to support the fact that a four-dimensional effective field theory description with de Sitter isometries in IIB string theory, overcoming the no-go and the swampland criteria, can only exist if de Sitter space is realized as a Glauber-Sudarshan state. We show here that this result is independent of the choice of de Sitter slicings. The Glauber-Sudarshan state, constructed by shifting the interacting vacuum in the M-theory uplift of the scenario, differs from a standard coherent state in QFT in the sense that the shape and size of the state changes with respect to time, implying changes in the graviton and the flux quanta. Despite this, the expectation values of the graviton and flux operators in such a state reproduce the exact de Sitter background, as long as we are within the temporal bound set by the onset of the strong coupling in the dual type IIA side, and satisfy the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson's equations in the presence of hierarchically controlled perturbative and non-perturbative quantum corrections. Additionally, we provide a detailed study of the fluxes supporting the Glauber-Sudarshan state in the M-theory uplift of the IIB scenario. We show explicitly how the Bianchi identities, anomaly cancellation and flux quantization conditions, along-with the constraints from the Schwinger-Dyson's equations, conspire together to provide the necessary temporal dependences to support such a state in full M-theory. We also discuss how our analysis points towards a surprising connection to the four-dimensional null energy condition, for a Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker state in the IIB side, as a consistency condition for the existence of an effective field theory description in M-theory., 188 pages, 33 tables, LaTex; comments welcome. v2: Typos corrected and reference updated; Matches version to appear in "Fortschritte der Physik"

Abstract

In QCD, the amplitude for multiple soft gluon emissions has been shown to exhibit a form of coherence, wherein one-loop corrections are rendered IR finite by the transverse momentum of the real emissions. Using a sequence of soft-collinear effective theories (SCET) with Glauber operators, we present a compact and elegant derivation of this property. Our derivation highlights an important role played by the Lipatov vertex. The EFT approach provides increased physical intuition and, for the first time, a clear road map for how this result can be extended to higher loop orders.

Abstract

The coherent states in the parity deformed analog of standard boson Glauber coherent states are generated, which admit a resolution of unity with a positive measure. The quantum-mechanical nature of the light field of these para-Bose states is studied, and it is found that para-Bose order plays an important role in the nonclassical behaviors including photon antibunching, sub-Poissonian statistics, signal-to-quantum noise ratio, quadrature squeezing effect, and multi-peaked number distribution. Furthermore, we consider the Jaynes-Cummings model of a two-level atom in a para-Bose cavity field with the initial states of the excited and Glauber coherent ones when the atom makes one-photon transitions, and obtain exact energy spectrum and eigenstates of the deformed model. Nonclassical properties of the time-evolved para-Bose atom-field states are exhibited through evaluating the fidelity, evolution of atomic inversion, level damping, and von Neumann entropy. It is shown that the evolution time and the para-Bose order control these properties.

Abstract

Results from proton-proton ($pp$) collisions have routinely been used as a baseline to analyze and understand the production of QCD matter expected to be produced in nuclear collisions. But recent studies of small systems formed in $pp$ collisions at the LHC energies hint at the possibility of producing medium with collective behavior. Therefore, results from $pp$ collisions required more careful investigation to understand whether QCD matter is produced in high multiplicity $pp$ collisions. With this motivation, the Glauber model traditionally used to study the heavy-ion collision dynamics at high energy is applied here to understand the dynamics of $pp$ collisions. We have used anisotropic and inhomogeneous quark/gluon-based proton density profile, a realistic picture obtained from deep inelastic scattering results and this model explains the charged particle multiplicity distribution of $pp$ collisions at LHC energies very well. Collision geometric properties like impact parameter and mean number of binary collisions ($\langle N_{coll} \rangle$), mean number of participants ($\langle N_{part} \rangle$) at different multiplicities are determined for $pp$ collisions. We further used these collision geometric properties to estimate average charged-particle pseudorapidity density ($\langle dN_{ch}/d\eta \rangle$) and found it to be comparable with the experimental results. Knowing $\langle N_{coll} \rangle$, we have obtained nuclear modification-like factor ($R_{pp}$) in $pp$ collisions which has not been done before to the best of our knowledge., Comment: Presented in LHCP-2021. 34. Centrality dependence of electroweak boson production in PbPb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Abstract

Recent data on the nuclear modification of $W$ and $Z$ boson production measured by the ATLAS collaboration in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{TeV}$ show an enhancement in peripheral collisions, seemingly contradicting predictions of the Glauber model. The data were previously explained by arguing that the nucleon-nucleon cross section may be shadowed in nucleus-nucleus collisions and hence suppressed compared with the proton-proton cross section at the same collision energy. This interpretation has quite significant consequences for the understanding of heavy-ion data, in particular in the context of the Glauber model. Instead, we provide an alternative explanation of the data by assuming that there is a mild bias present in the centrality determination of the measurement; on the size of the related systematic uncertainty. Using this assumption, we show that the data is in agreement with theoretical calculations using nuclear parton distribution functions. Finally, we speculate that the centrality dependence of the ${W}^{\ensuremath{-}}/{W}^{+}$ ratio may point to the relevance of a larger skin thickness of the Pb nucleus, which, if present, would result in a few percent larger PbPb cross section than currently accounted for in the Glauber model and may hence be the root of the centrality bias.

35. Nuclear matter density distributions of the neutron-rich He6,8 isotopes from a sum-of-Gaussian analysis of elastic proton scattering data at intermediate energies

Abstract

Differential cross sections for elastic $p\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ and $p\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{8}\mathrm{He}$ scattering, measured in inverse kinematics at high momentum transfer up to the first diffraction minimum and at projectile energies around 700 MeV/u at GSI Darmstadt, are analyzed applying the sum-of-Gaussians (SOG) method based on the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. The rms point matter radii of $^{6}\mathrm{He}$ and $^{8}\mathrm{He}$ are deduced to be 2.29(6) fm and 2.53(7) fm, respectively, in close agreement with those from former analyses using phenomenological parametrizations for describing the matter distributions. With the aid of the measurement at high momentum transfer, the overall radial density distributions of $^{6}\mathrm{He}$ and $^{8}\mathrm{He}$ are precisely deduced using the SOG method, in particular at small radii. A pronounced core rearrangement by adding the valence neutrons to an $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-like core to form $^{6}\mathrm{He}$ and $^{8}\mathrm{He}$ is elucidated, and briefly discussed.

Abstract

The hitting and mixing times are two often-studied quantities associated with Markov chains. Yuval Peres, Perla Sousi and Roberto Oliveira showed that the mixing times and “worst-case” hitting times of reversible Markov chains on finite state spaces are “equivalent”—that is, equal up to some universal multiplicative constant. We have extended this strong connection between mixing and hitting times to Markov chains satisfying the strong Feller property in an earlier work. In the present paper, we further extend the results to include Metropolis–Hastings chains, the popular Gibbs sampler (from statistics), and Glauber dynamics (from statistical physics), which make “one-dimensional” updates and thus do not satisfy the strong Feller property. We also apply this result to obtain decomposition bounds for such Markov chains. Our main tools come from nonstandard analysis.

Abstract

The CMS experiment at the LHC has measured the differential cross sections of Z bosons decaying to pairs of leptons, as functions of transverse momentum and rapidity, in lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The measured Z boson elliptic azimuthal anisotropy coefficient is compatible with zero, showing that Z bosons do not experience significant final-state interactions in the medium produced in the collision. Yields of Z bosons are compared to Glauber model predictions and are found to deviate from these expectations in peripheral collisions, indicating the presence of initial collision geometry and centrality selection effects. The precision of the measurement allows, for the first time, for a data-driven determination of the nucleon-nucleon integrated luminosity as a function of lead-lead centrality, thereby eliminating the need for its estimation based on a Glauber model.

Abstract

We consider the annealing dynamics of a one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet induced by a temperature quench in finite time. In the limit of slow cooling, the asymptotic two-point correlator is analytically found under Glauber dynamics, and the distribution of the number of kinks in the final state is shown to be consistent with a Poissonian distribution. The mean kink number, the variance, and the third centered moment take the same value and obey a universal power-law scaling with the quench time in which the temperature is varied. The universal power-law scaling of cumulants is corroborated by numerical simulations based on Glauber dynamics for moderate cooling times away from the asymptotic limit, when the kink-number distribution takes a binomial form. We analyze the relation of these results to physics beyond the Kibble-Zurek mechanism for critical dynamics, using the kink number distribution to assess adiabaticity and its breakdown. We consider linear, nonlinear, and exponential cooling schedules, among which the latter provides the most efficient shortcuts to cooling in a given quench time. Abstract

Decorrelation of the elliptic flow in rapidity is calculated within a hybrid approach which includes event-by-event viscous fluid dynamics and final state hadronic cascade model. The simulations are performed for Au+Au collisions at center-of-mass collision energies of 27 and 200 GeV per nucleon pair, as well as various colliding systems at 72 GeV per nucleon pair. Initial conditions determined by an extended Monte Carlo Glauber model show better agreement with experimental data than initial conditions from the UrQMD transport model. We show how the observed decorrelation is connected with the decorrelation of initial state spatial anisotropies. Abstract

A consistent measurement of the inclusive single-neutron removal cross sections of $^{14,15,16}\mathrm{C}$ on a carbon target at around 240 MeV/nucleon has been performed at the External Target Facility, HIRFL-CSR, and compared with Glauber model predictions using shell-model spectroscopic strengths between the initial projectile ground state and configurations of bound core state $+$ valence neutron state as input. For the dependence of the spectroscopic factor reduction characterized by the ratio ${R}_{s}$ of the experimental over theoretical single-nucleon removal cross section on the bounding depth $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}S$ of the removed nucleon established in single-nucleon removals with beam energies mainly over 80--120 MeV/nucleon, our measurement gives ${R}_{s}$ values that conform to the earlier ${R}_{s}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}S$ systematics, where the relatively higher incident beam energy facilitates the applicability of the eikonal and sudden approximation used in the Glauber model.

Abstract

We present a randomized algorithm which takes as input an undirected graph G on n vertices with maximum degree Δ, and a number of colors k ≥ (8/3 + oΔ(1))Δ, and returns – in expected time O(nΔ2logk) – a proper k-coloring of G distributed perfectly uniformly on the set of all proper k-colorings of G. Notably, our sampler breaks the barrier at k = 3Δ encountered in recent work of Bhandari and Chakraborty [STOC 2020]. We also discuss how our methods may be modified to relax the restriction on k to k ≥ (8/3 − є0)Δ for an absolute constant є0 > 0. As in the work of Bhandari and Chakraborty, and the pioneering work of Huber [STOC 1998], our sampler is based on Coupling from the Past [ProppW H'aggstr'om& Nelander, Scand. J. Statist., 1999]. Our innovations include a novel bounding chain routine inspired by Jerrum’s analysis of the Glauber dynamics [Random Struct. Algorithms, 1995], as well as a preconditioning routine for bounding chains which uses the algorithmic Lovasz Local Lemma [Moser&Tardos, J.ACM, 2010].

Abstract

The modulational instability associated with discrete breathers in 2D quantum ultracold atoms is studied by using the Glauber’s coherent state combined with a semi-discrete approximation and multiple-scale methods. The linear stability analysis exhibits an intriguing threshold amplitude and instability regions associated with modulational growth rate. In addition, we demonstrate a coexistence of two bright intrinsic localized modes namely, the radial symmetric and bilateral symmetric modes, at the center and at the edges of the Brillouin zone, respectively, by alternating the on-site parameter interaction. Numerical investigations reveal a good agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract

We have calculated some of the basic structural properties such as the ground state proton, neutron and matter densities and elastic form factors of halo nuclei namely, 11Be and 14Be using the binary cluster model (BCM) within the Gaussian and harmonic oscillator wave functions. The halo nuclei have been considered as a compact core with loosely bound valence neutron(s) forming the halo. The comparison between the calculated and experimental matter density distributions supports the halo structure for 11Be [14Be] where the valence one neutron [two neutrons] occupy the 1p1/2 [(2s1/2)2] orbital. We have also calculated the reaction cross sections for these nuclei using the Glauber model with an optical limit approximation at low and high energies. The calculated of these nuclei give a good description of experimental data at both low and high energies.

Abstract

Absolute differential cross sections for elastic $p^7$Be and $p^8$B small-angle scattering were measured in inverse kinematics at an energy of 0.7 GeV/u at GSI Darmstadt. The hydrogen-filled ionization chamber IKAR was used as an active target to detect the recoil protons. The projectile tracking and isotope identification were performed with multi-wire proportional chambers and scintillation detectors. The measured cross sections were analysed using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. The root-mean-square (rms) nuclear matter radii $R_{\rm m} = 2.42 (4)$ fm for $^7$Be and $R_{\rm m} = 2.58 (6)$ fm for $^8$B were obtained. The radial density distribution deduced for $^8$B exhibits a proton halo structure with the rms halo radius $R_{\rm h} = 4.24 (25)$ fm. Abstract

The radial wave functions of the Harmonic Oscillator and Woods-Saxon potentials within the three-body [two-body] model of have been used to study some of the basic structural features such as the ground state proton, neutron and matter densities, the associated root mean square (rms) radii and elastic form factors of neutron-rich 17B [22N] halo nucleus. The long tail manner is clearly shown in the results obtained of neutron and matter densities of these nuclei. According to the calculated results it is found that this model provides a good description on the nuclear structure of above exotic nuclei. The reaction cross sections for these nuclei have been studied using the Glauber model with an optical limit approximation at high energy region.

Abstract

New empirical formulae for in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross-section are presented and used to study the proton-nucleus interaction in the framework of Glauber model. The total, absorption and elastic cross-sections are calculated for many target nuclei. The calculated total cross-sections using the in-medium effective factor , f m 4 , give a reasonable fit with the experimental data. In addition, the in-medium factors f m 1 , f m 2 and f m 3 successfully reproduce the absorption cross-section at energies up to 600 MeV.

Abstract

The dynamic compensation and dynamic hysteresis features of the mixed bilayer Ising system (MBIS) consist of spin-1 and spin-1/2 on a bilayer square lattice and have been studied extensively with the use of the effective-field theory and Glauber type stochastic dynamic. Firstly, the thermal variations of the total magnetization were investigated in order to find the compensation types of the MBIS. The six compensation types were found to be the Q-, R-, P-, N-, S-, and L-types. Then, the effects of the temperature, interlayer coupling constant, crystal field, and oscillating field frequency on the dynamic magnetic hysteresis properties were widely studied.

Abstract

We perform a parameter-free calculation for the high-energy proton-nucleus scattering based on the Glauber theory. A complete evaluation of the so-called Glauber amplitude is made by using the factorization of the single-particle wave functions. The multiple-scattering or multistep processes are fully taken into account within the Glauber theory. We demonstrate that proton- $^{12}$C, $^{20}$Ne, and $^{28}$Si elastic and inelastic scattering ($J^\pi=0^+ \to 2^+$ and $0^+ \to 4^+$) processes are very well described in a wide range of the incident energies from $\sim$50 MeV to $\sim$ 1 GeV. We evaluate the validity of a simple one-step approximation andfind that the approximation works fairly well for the inelastic $0^+ \to 2^+$ processes but not for $0^+ \to 4^+$ where the multistep processes become more important. As an application, we quantify the difference between the total reaction and interaction cross sections of proton-$^{12}$C, $^{20}$Ne, and $^{28}$Si collisions., Comment: 29 pages, 6 figures, to appear in Nucl. Abstract

The analysis of time correlations between photons is the essence of quantum information processing protocols (communication, metrology and computing) presented in this special issue. These correlation measures are derived from fundamental quantum optical techniques formalised by R. Glauber in 1963 [Phys. Rev. 130, 2529] which enable the properties of electromagnetic fields to be measured, i.e. their fluctuations and signatures to be detected in a noisy signal. More generally, those fluctuations are the result of high order interferences and are, in certain cases, directly linked to the "traditional" coherence of the optical fields.
