The glass industry is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions due to its energy consumption profile and the use of fossil fuels in the manufacturing process. Most of the energy to produce glass is consumed in the process of treating raw materials to elevated temperatures, usually above 1500°C. Glass manufacturing also generates significant environmental impacts, such as greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, water consumption, and waste generation. Therefore, improving the sustainability of glass manufacturing is a significant challenge for the industry and society. There are ways to reduce the energy consumption and emissions of glass melting, such as recycling glass, using oxy‐fuel burners, improving furnace insulation and design, and adopting electric melting technologies. These methods can help save energy, lower costs, and enhance the sustainability and environmental footprint of the glass industry. However, the industry faces challenges and barriers, such as technical feasibility, economic viability, capital investment, and market acceptance. More research and development must be invested to improve the energy efficiency and environmental performance of glass melting. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the growth glass industry has made over the past 30 years and the remaining challenges for sustainable glass manufacturing with a focus on the fiberglass segment. Sharing of procedural methods, technical approaches, and results can help enable the global glass industry in our future sustainability challenges. The fiberglass segment included a broad technical view including glass chemistry development, product development, new industry codes and standards, melting development, computational fluid dynamic modeling, life cycle assessments, and sustainability goals linked to capital planning. The net result delivered a significant reduction in environmental emissions at the global enterprise scale. The implemented changes have taken decades, significant investments, and resources to plan and develop. Practices reviewed and implemented can help drive collaboration and commonality within the glass industry to achieve sustainability goals. Action is needed now if the glass industry is to meet global government demands of reducing carbon emissions by 55% by 2030 and zero carbon emissions by 2050 in alignment with the Paris Agreement on decarbonization. This paper demonstrates the suitability of Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis (PGAA) technique for the compositional study of ancient glass finds, illustrating this idea by presenting and commenting the chemical composition of 41 Roman glass fragments discovered in archaeological excavations at Tomis, Histria, and Beidaud, Romania. According to typological and stratigraphic criteria, most finds were dated to the 1st-4th centuries AD. The PGAA measurements were performed at the Budapest Neutron Centre (BNC), Hungary. Regardless of their color (or the lack of it), most of the analyzed vitreous items have compositional traits often encountered in coeval glass artefacts discovered at various sites all over the Roman Empire. The sample set turned out to include several examples of Foy Série 2.1 and a single HIMT glass item, in agreement with the later chronological attribution of the corresponding fragments. This study provides some information about the chemistry of the Roman glass finds unearthed during the archaeological research performed in the region of the western Black Sea coast. Relatively fresh volcanic rocks have been sampled by a remotely operated vehicle in situ from the NE caldera wall of Brothers submarine volcano, associated with Seafloor Massive Sulfide‐SMS deposits. Here, we present the first complete stratigraphic column of the NE caldera wall, comprising at least 12 massive dacitic lava flows, up to 80 m‐thick intercalated with multiple volcaniclastic layers associated with tuffaceous sediment layers. Detailed petrographic and geochemical analyses from hand specimen to crystal to silicate melt scale show chemical variability with depth, correlating partly with an increase in pervasive alteration due to volatile degassing. Moreover, while sulfide saturation occurred prior to volatile exsolution—which sequestrated most chalcophile elements as confirmed by the low metal contents of melt inclusions (e.g., Cu ≤ 1.3 μg/g and Au ≤ 7.0 μg/g)—silicate glass records a Cu enrichment and Au loss with differentiation, with interstitial glass accounting for Cu = 4.2 μg/g and Au = 6.6 μg/g and matrix glass for Cu = 6.0 μg/g and Au = 2.8 μg/g, respectively. Our findings suggest multiple sources for metals compensating for the low initial metal contents: (a) from hydrothermal fluids and volatile percolation ensuing interaction with the host rock and thus also replacement and/or dissolution of pre‐existing magmatic sulfides, (b) directly from the magma, consistent with metal release during magma degassing of metal‐ and Cl‐, and S‐ rich volatiles, and (c) from fluid circulation within unusually metal‐rich andesitic volcaniclastic layers (Cu = 40 μg/g, Au = 1.5 ng/g, and Pt = 0.99 ng/g). Our results elucidate the capacity of such hybrid mineralizing submarine volcanic systems to effectively scavenge, transport, and concentrate metals. Plain Language Summary: Based on a set of samples collected by a remotely operated vehicle, we composed the first stratigraphic column of the NE Caldera wall of the Brothers active submarine volcano. In order to understand the source and transport mechanism of metals in the volcanic system, we performed petrographic observations and chemical analyses of glass inclusions (representing the source of the magma), minerals and their host rocks. Our findings show a chemical variability with depth, down the caldera wall, correlating with alteration caused by degassing. Written sources indicate that Alexandria in Egypt was a leading producer of Roman glass. Furthermore, archaeological finds have provided evidence for the local production of drawn glass and gold‐in‐glass beads, which were distributed throughout the world. In this study, we present an analysis of the chemical composition of more than two hundred glass objects from the Roman (2nd–3rd/4th century ce) and Late Antique (4th/5th–7th century ce) glass bead workshops located at Kom el‐Dikka in Alexandria. This study is based on the results of portable X‐ray fluorescence (pXRF) analyses carried out on raw glass, bead semi‐products, products and waste from both periods. Additionally, the glass chemistry of some Islamic (8th–12th century ce) beads found at the site has been analysed.Despite the limitations of the method, the vast majority of samples exhibited compositions confirming their general dating and Egyptian origin. Remarkably, a single bead was made of high‐alumina glass and appeared to be an import from India, possibly a remnant of the Indo‐Pacific glass bead route that connected Red Sea ports and Europe in Late Antiquity. Hasandağ volcano (Central Anatolia, Turkey) has recently underwent an increase in local seismicity and fumarolic activity since 2013. In the past, this volcano has produced multiple large explosive eruptions during the last million years. The Belbaşhanı Pumice is the product of a sub-Plinian to Plinian eruption dated at ~ 417 ± 20.5 ka (40Ar/39Ar). Here, we present a complete volcanological study including stratigraphy, glass chemistry, pumice morphology, geochronology, and eruption source parameters with the associated uncertainties, to characterize the Belbaşhanı Pumice eruption. The eruption involved a column of 18–29 km in height, with the main dispersal axis towards the northeast. A pumice layer up to ~ 17-m-thick accumulated in proximal deposits along the Belbaşhanı path, and up to 2-m-thick in medial-distal areas (~ 18 km northeast from the vent). The high and tubular vesicularity of the pumice clasts indicates that the Belbaşhanı eruption was predominantly magmatic. The bulk volume of the Belbaşhanı Pumice fallout deposit has been estimated as 0.5 and 8 km3 (with ~ 2 km3 being the mean value), which corresponds to Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of at least 4 and up to 6. Both isopach and isopleth maps indicate that the volcanic vent may have been located at the intersection of the Tuz Gölü fault and Ulukışla caldera, within the Hasandağ volcanic complex. The glass composition of Belbaşhanı Pumice confirms that the eruption belongs to the Hasandağ magmatic system. The reconstruction of the Belbaşhanı Pumice eruption represents an essential baseline in providing volcanological constraints for further investigations of tephra fallout hazard assessment in Central Anatolia, especially considering that a new Plinian eruption cannot be ruled out at Hasandağ volcano in the future. The chemical and geochronological datasets presented here could aid in refining tephrochronological correlations, with the goal of synchronizing paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic records alongside archaeological sites. Sulfide electrolytes represent a crucial category of superionic conductors for all-solid-state lithium metal batteries. Among sulfide electrolytes, glassy sulfide is highly promising due to its long-range disorder and grain-boundary-free nature. However, the lack of comprehension regarding glass formation chemistry has hindered their progress. Herein, we propose interstitial volume as the decisive factor influencing halogen dopant solubility within a glass matrix. We engineer a Li3PS4-Li4SiS4 complex structure within the sulfide glassy network to facilitate the release of interstitial volume. Consequently, we increase the dissolution capacity of LiI to 40 mol% in 75Li2S-25P2S5 glass. The synthesized glass exhibits one of the highest ionic conductivities among reported glass sulfides. Furthermore, we develop a glassy/crystalline composite electrolyte to mitigate the shortcomings of argyrodite-type sulfides by utilizing our synthesized glass as the filler. The composite electrolytes effectively mitigate Li intrusion. This work unveils a protocol for the dissolution of halogen dopants in glass electrolytes. Distinctive low diversity foraminiferal and ostracod faunas in Holocene mud from a stratigraphic drillhole through Rangitoto Volcano (∼600 years old) indicate a highly sheltered, shallow-marine environment existed near the middle of the exposed entrance to Waitemata Harbour, Auckland, for at least 7000 years prior to Rangitoto's eruption. Modern Analogue Technique estimates for these faunas indicate they accumulated at low tidal to shallow subtidal depths (0–11 m). The most similar analogue faunas lived subtidally in the extreme shelter inside the breached Onepoto maar lagoon, Auckland. Therefore, we infer the possible existence of a pre-7500 year-old maar crater and surrounding tuff ring buried beneath Rangitoto Volcano. This Holocene mud occurs in the drillhole 24–10 m lower than where the microfaunas indicate it accumulated. It is inferred to have slid into the adjacent harbour channel, along with 7 m of basaltic tuff and a piece of lava flow, near the start of the second phase of Rangitoto's eruption. Industrial wastes are often an under-utilized source of raw materials. Bottom ashes resulting from incineration processes can contain various metal oxides, including many commonly used in glass making. This research studied the forming and properties of glasses made from two bottom ashes. Lignite bottom ash (BL) from Lampang, Thailand and a municipal solid waste incinerator bottom ash (BP) from Phuket, Thailand. Both bottom ashes were found to contain significant amounts of SiO2, CaO, Al2O3, and Fe2O3. After ball milling, the ashes were melted without additions, at temperatures from 1300 to 1500°C. The resulting glasses, as confirmed by XRD, were black and fully opaque, a result of the high Fe2O3 content. It was found that the BP glasses were slightly more refractory, had a greater average thermal conductivity of 1.52 W/m·K and a lower coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 6.97x10-6/°C, compared to the BP glasses, which had an average thermal conductivity of 1.39 W/m·K and a CTE of 7.98x10-6/°C. The BL glasses also had a higher average density of 2.88 g/cm³ and a Vickers hardness of 6.29 GPa, compared to the BP glasses, with average values of 2.74 g/cm³ and 6.06 GPa, respectively. The increase of glass melting temperature up to 1450°C tended to improve the observed properties, followed by a decrease at 1500°C. Despite the atypical glass chemistry of the two bottom ashes, they were successfully melted to produce glasses and the measured properties demonstrated suitable potential to warrant further study. Excavations at Soba, the capital of Alwa, between 2019 and 2022 yielded more than 30 glass fragments in addition to a glass cosmetic bottle. An analysis of 30 glass samples has identified glass belonging to a number of compositional groups. The majority of fragments were made of plant ash‐soda glass produced in the Middle East (Iran, Iraq) between the 9th and 10th centuries, and in the Eastern Mediterranean (Levant and Egypt) between the mid‐10th and mid‐12th centuries. Seven fragments were made of mineral–soda‐lime glass produced in 9th‐century Egypt and three high‐lead glasses find analogies in the 9th‐ to 11th‐century glass. Archeological evidence, as well as textual sources, leave no doubt about Alwa's intense transcultural connections. This article provides the first insight into the chemistry of glass shards from medieval Nubia, and the results of analysis contribute to evidence for long‐distance contacts of Soba, the capital of one of the medieval kingdoms of Sahelian Africa. Hydrophobic oil droplets, particles, and air bubbles can be dispersed in water as kinetically stabilized dispersions. It has been established since the 19th century that such objects harbor a negative electrostatic potential roughly twice larger than the thermal energy. The source of this charge continues to be one of the core observations in relation to hydrophobicity, and its molecular explanation is still debated. What is clear though is that the stabilizing interaction in these systems is understood in terms of electrostatic repulsion via Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek theory. Recent work [A. P. Carpenter et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 116, 9214 (2019)] has added another element into the discussion, reporting the creation of bare near-zero charged droplets of oil in neat water that are stable for several days. Key to the creation of the droplets is a rigorous glassware cleaning procedure. Here, we investigate these conclusions and show that the cleaning procedure of glassware has no influence on the electrophoretic mobility of the droplets and that oil droplets with near-zero charge are unstable. Understanding the mechanisms contributing to dielectric properties of glasses is critical for designing new compositions for microwave frequency applications. In this work, dielectric permittivity was measured using a cavity perturbation technique at 10 GHz for a series of niobiosilicate glasses with the compositions (100‐2x)SiO2‐ xNb2O5‐ xLi2O where x = 32.5, 30, 25, and 15 mol%. Permittivity measurements and glass compositions were used to calculate the polarizability of each cation‐anion unit in the glass network using the Clausius‐Mossotti equation. The SiO2 polarizability in niobiosilicates was calculated to be 6.16 Å3, which is much higher than the SiO2 polarizability in fused silica glass (5.25 Å3), alkali modified silicates (5.37 Å3), and aluminosilicates (5.89 Å3). The increasing trend in SiO2 polarizability is attributed to the disruption in the connectivity of the SiO4 tetrahedral network as it accommodates different network formers. The high SiO2 polarizability of 6.16 Å3 accurately predicts measured dielectric permittivity when Nb2O5 = 25, 30, and 32.5 mol%, but overpredicts measured permittivity when Nb2O5 ≤ 15 mol%, which is attributed to a decrease in SiO2 polarizability as the percentage of corner sharing SiO4 tetrahedra with NbO6 octahedra goes down. This work demonstrates that SiO2 polarizability depends on chemistry and connectivity of the glass, which has important implications in designing glass compositions for microwave frequency applications. In this work, we develop and employ an accelerated design strategy using a machine learning algorithm to overcome the challenges for designing a new machinable glass ceramic. The trained machine learning model predicts the specific hardness value for numerous possibilities of processing conditions such as growth temperature and time. We report that the optimized growth parameters of 1200°C and 5 h achieve the highest machinability of 0.4 in the glass ceramic. Furthermore, we predicted the eight most promising candidates containing specific ratios of silicon, magnesium, aluminum, lithium, boron, potassium, barium, and oxygen. Combining machine learning with experimental data enables a systemic and rapid design of a ceramic material while capturing the underlying physics represented in the experimental data. Understanding the multivariate origin of physical properties is particularly complex for polyionic glasses. As a concept, the term genome has been used to describe the entirety of structure‐property relations in solid materials, based on functional genes acting as descriptors for a particular property, for example, for input in regression analysis or other machine‐learning tools. Here, the genes of ionic conductivity in polyionic sodium‐conducting glasses are presented as fictive chemical entities with a characteristic stoichiometry, derived from strong linear component analysis (SLCA) of a uniquely consistent dataset. SLCA is based on a twofold optimization problem that maximizes the quality of linear regression between a property (here: ionic conductivity) and champion candidates from all possible combinations of elements. Family trees and matrix rotation analysis are subsequently used to filter for essential elemental combinations, and from their characteristic mean composition, the essential genes. These genes reveal the intrinsic relationships within the multivariate input data. While they do not require a structural representation in real space, how possible structural interpretations agree with intuitive understanding of structural entities known from spectroscopic experiments is finally demonstrated. Certain types of ceramics have property that shows direct bonding to living bone tissue in vivo, and are referred to as bioactive materials. As a bioactive material, Bioglass® was discovered and developed in early 1970’s, inorganic glasses and materials based on them have been studied for bone substitutes for tissue repairing. In addition, elucidation of the mechanism by which they express their high biological affinity has been studied. The author has been interested in elucidating the mechanisms by which inorganic glasses show high biological affinity to bond to living bone, and has carried out fundamental research, as well as developing novel biomaterials based on the materials chemistry of glasses and ceramics. The science and technology of the bioactive glasses have made a significant contribution to the field of medicine. Whilst, 2022 has been designated as the International Year of Glass by the United Nations General Assembly, and events commemorating the science, technology and art associated with glass are being held around the world. As part of these events, a special feature on glass science and bioinspired materials was also held at the 2022 Spring Meeting of the Japan Society of Powder and Powder Metallurgy. Against this background, this paper describes the review of the author’s achievement awards, with a particular focus on glass and biomaterials, and the development of novel materials using bioinspired methods. Using an emittance technique with a fast CO2 laser heating of glass samples, the high‐temperature absorption spectra in the near‐infrared region of ultrapure and colored (Co‐, Cu‐, Mn‐, and Ni‐doped) glasses are measured. The effects of higher glass temperatures on these absorption spectra are explained in the framework of the ligand field theory. Thus, the temperature‐dependent absorption bands of the previous transition metal ions are assigned to electronic transitions among the ligand field energy levels of these ions. In particular, spectral shifts, spectral broadening, and changes in absorption strength are ascribed to changes in the structural symmetry of the ionic sites in the glass matrix and to changes of the ligand field strength at increasing temperatures. Besides, the temperature‐dependent Rosseland mean absorptions of the sulfate fined soda lime silicate glass melts, colored with the previous transition metal ions, are derived from the absorption spectra. Combining all the data, semiempirical correlations are derived, which predict the Rosseland thermal radiation properties as a function of glass temperature and of glass redox chemistry. The latter property involves the temperature‐dependent concentration of the specific valency of the coloring ions, determined independently, e.g. by a Gibbs minimization redox calculation tool. Re is often used as a nonradioactive surrogate for Tc in borosilicate melts because both elements have similar valences, ionic radii, and coordination environments. Re solubility in high sodium borosilicate waste glasses is sensitive to melter redox conditions; at 1150°C the solubility is ∼4130 ppm under oxidizing atmospheres. Raman, X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, and X‐ray diffraction show that Re dissolved in waste glasses under oxidizing conditions is in perrhenate tetrahedra; under more reducing conditions, Re0 separates from the melt. From air to PO2$ {\rm P}_{{\rm O}_2} $∼ 10−4 atm, both Re7+ and Tc7+ are dominant species in borosilicate melts. However, Tc and Re behaviors deviate between PO2$ {\rm P}_{{\rm O}_2} $< 10−4 atm and PO2$ {\rm P}_{{\rm O}_2} $> 10−8 atm, where Tc4+ becomes dominant, whereas Re7+ remains stable. Unlike Tc4+, Re4+ is not observed in borosilicate melts at 1150°C and associated glasses. Near PO2$ {\rm P}_{{\rm O}_2} $= 10−8 atm, Tc4+ reduces to Tc0, whereas below PO2$ {\rm P}_{{\rm O}_2} $= 10−8 atm, Re7+ reduces to Re0. Re is found to be a good surrogate for Tc under oxidizing conditions (PO2$ {\rm P}_{{\rm O}_2} $> 10−4 atm) and under highly reducing conditions (PO2$ {\rm P}_{{\rm O}_2} $< 10−9 atm). Redox and solubility behaviors of Tc and Re are also sensitive to glass chemistry, such that the fair assessment of Re modeling Tc behavior should be glass specific. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Iron oxide is commonly found in natural or industrial glass compositions and can exist as ferrous (Fe2+) or ferric (Fe3+) species, with their ratios depending on glass composition, temperature, pressure and the redox reactions during the glass forming process. The iron redox ratio plays an important role on silicate glass structures and consequently various properties. This work aims to study the effect of iron oxide, and particularly the iron redox ratio, on the structures of borosilicate and boroaluminosilicate glasses using molecular dynamics simulations with newly developed iron potential parameters that are compatible with the borosilicate potentials. The results provide detailed cation coordination states of both iron species and the effect of redox ratio on boron coordination and other structural features. Particularly, competition for charge compensating modifier cations (such as Na+) among the fourfold‐coordinated cations such as B3+, Al3+, and Fe3+ is investigated by calculating the cation–cation pair distribution functions and coordination preferential ratios. The results show that the trivalent ferric ions, with a shorter Fe–O bond distance and better defined first coordiation shell with mainly four‐fold coordination, act as a glass former whereas the divalent ferrous ions mainly play the role of glass modifier. The ferrous/ferric ratio (Fe2+/Fe3+) was found to affect the glass chemistry and hence glass properties by regulating the amount of four‐coordinated boron, the fraction of non‐briding oxygen and other features. The diffusion of molecular water (H 2 O m) from the environment into volcanic glass can hydrate the glass up to several wt% at low temperature over long timescales. During this process, the water imprints its hydrogen isotope composition (δD H2O) to the glass (δD gl) offset by a glass-H 2 O fractionation factor (ΔD gl-H2O = δD gl – δD H2O) which is approximately −33‰ at Earth surface temperatures. Glasses hydrate much more rapidly at higher, sub-magmatic temperatures as they interact with H 2 O during eruption, transport, and emplacement. To aid in the interpretation of δD gl in natural samples, we present hydrogen isotope results from vapor hydration experiments conducted at 175–375 °C for durations of hours to months using natural volcanic glasses. The results can be divided into two thermal regimes: above 250 °C and below 250 °C. Lower temperature experiments yield raw ΔD gl-H2O values in the range of −33 ± 11‰. Experiments at 225 °C using both positive and negative initial ΔD gl-H2O values converge on this range of values, suggesting this range represents the approximate equilibrium fractionation for H isotopes between glass and H 2 O vapor (103lnα gl-H2O) below 250 °C. Variation in ΔD gl-H2O (−33 ± 11‰) between different experiments and glasses may arise from incomplete hydration, analytical uncertainty, differences in glass chemistry, and/or subordinate kinetic isotope effects. Experiments above 250 °C yield unexpectedly low δD gl values with ΔD gl-H2O values of ≤–85‰. While alteration alone is incapable of explaining the data, these run products have more extensive surface alteration and are not interpreted to reflect equilibrium fractionation between glass and H 2 O vapor. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) shows that glass can hydrate with as much as 5.9 wt% H 2 O m and 1.0 wt% hydroxl (OH−) in the highest P-T experiment at 375 °C and 21.1 MPa. Therefore, we employ a 1D isotope diffusion–reaction model of glass hydration to evaluate the roles of equilibrium fractionation, isotope diffusion, water speciation reactions internal to the glass, and changing boundary conditions (e.g. alteration and dissolution). At lower temperatures, the best fitting model results to experimental data for low silica rhyolite (LSR) glasses require only an equilibrium fractionation factor and yield 103lnα gl-H2O values of −33‰ ± 5‰ and −25‰ ± 5‰ at 175 °C and 225 °C, respectively. At higher temperatures, ΔD gl-H2O is dominated by boundary layer effects during glass hydration and glass surface alteration. The modeled bulk δD gl value is highly responsive to changes in the δD gl boundary condition regardless of the magnitude of other kinetic effects. Observed glass dissolution and surficial secondary mineral formation are likely to impose a disequilibrium boundary layer that drives extreme δD gl fractionation with progressive glass hydration. These results indicate that the observed ΔD gl-H2O of ∼−33 ± 11‰ can be cautiously applied as an equilibrium 103lnα gl-H2O value to natural silicic glasses hydrated below 250 °C to identify hydration sources. This approximate ΔD gl-H2O may be applicable to even higher temperature glasses hydrated on short timescales (of seconds to minutes) in phreatomagmatic or submarine eruptions before H 2 O in the glass is primarily affected by boundary layer effects associated with alteration on the glass surface. The Battleship Rock Ignimbrite of the East Fork Member of the Valles Rhyolite (USA) consists of a variably welded compound cooling unit emplaced in the southern part of the Valles Caldera at 74 ka. At the type locality, the unit was deposited in a narrow paleocanyon and is glassy throughout, with little petrographic evidence for post-eruptive alteration. Biotites from different zones in the ignimbrite at this location, and associated lavas and fallout deposits of the East Fork Member, frequently exhibit low analytical totals (< 94 wt%; by electron microprobe) that are correlated with potassium (K) depletion and enriched in lithium (Li). These variations between samples are systematically related to the welding profile of the ignimbrite. Biotites with low totals are accompanied by groundmass glass with low δ18O, which requires high-temperature interaction with meteoric water. The low totals, K depletion, and Li enrichment are therefore attributed to a brief episode of meteoric-hydrothermal alteration of the cooling tuff immediately following emplacement. The duration of the episode is estimated to be on the order of months or less, constrained by Cs, Rb, and Sr mobility in glass. Additional variations in glass and biotite chemistry are identified as primary, and offer an avenue to deciphering the complex event stratigraphy of the eruption, with implications for hazard potential of future rhyolitic eruptions from Valles Caldera. Lanthanide borosilicate glasses containing Pu and the nonradioactive analog element Ce were subjects of an x‐ray absorption spectroscopy investigation to quantify the +3/+4 ratio of these redox‐sensitive elements. The data show that the dominant oxidation states are +4 for Pu and +3 for Ce. The data also indicate that the reductive potential of glasses can be quantified from a solution chemistry method adapted to glass chemistry, although allowances must be made for glass composition. These data can therefore be used to formulate glass compositions and processing schedules that lead to a controlled oxidation state of Pu in melts. Furthermore, the data show that Ce is a poor analog for Pu behavior in melts and that the suitability of surrogates can be assessed by the evaluation approach presented here. The method demonstrated in this paper can be used to estimate the oxidation states of a range of multi‐valent elements as functions of temperature and composition with data from only a single redox couple. The aim of this paper is to highlight new occurrences of tephra and cryptotephra layers from three peatbogs located southeastern from the French Massif Central in France. These tephras were evidenced using magnetic susceptibility logging, scanner imagery and chemical analyses by X-Ray Fluorescence, and characterized by their glass chemistry. Originated from the Chaîne des Puys volcanic field, these six new tephras allow for the definition of a more detailed regional tephrostratigraphic framework. Most of these tephras were deposited between ca. 13,500 and 9500 yrs cal. BP, and the last one was deposited between 6400 and 5920 yrs cal. BP. Some tephras of this framework were previously described in the Jura Mountains, the Northern Alps and the Western Swiss Plateau, and allow its correlation to the Northern European context established by previous studies. It is proposed that the hardness of aluminosilicate glasses correlates with the melting temperature as predicted by the phase diagram. To evaluate this hypothesis, a broad range of CaO–Al2O3–SiO2 compositions was evaluated, verifying the glass formation region, and allowing for a systematic comparison of Vickers indentation hardness with melting temperature. Candidate glass forming compositions were restricted to the normal glass formation region (SiO2 > CaO) and ranging from SiO2:CaO ratios of 1:1 to 9:1 and Al2O3:CaO ratios ranging from.2:1.0 to 1.3:1.0. Glass forming compositions were X‐ray amorphous. The correlation of hardness was nonlinear but showed reasonable correlation with the melting behavior, with the lowest hardness glass obtained for the eutectic composition. The maximum hardness was obtained in the narrow glass chemistry range of 1.0:1.0:1.5 to 1.0:1.2:1.5 (CaO:Al2O3:SiO2) in the vicinity of anorthite (CaO·Al2O3·2SiO2). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Pyro-electrohydrodynamic jetting (p-jet) has emerged recently as a promising technique for biosensing applications, through the concentration of highly diluted biomolecules in fluorescent spots at microscale. However, a great challenge still remains in optimizing the binding strategy for the sensing interface, enabling the detection of low abundance proteins through immunofluorescence protocols. Indeed, the surface of reaction can be functionalized with different chemical groups able to bind the target molecule with a strong interaction, prior to the p-jet spots decreasing the possibility to lose sensitivity after the common rinsing steps., Results: Here, we characterize the immobilization of a model protein, specifically the bovine serum albumin (BSA), in the concentrated p-jet spots to demonstrate the reliability of the technique for highly sensitive immunodetection assays. We first performed spectroscopic measurements on BSA deposited through pipette spots at relatively high concentrations and we achieved a higher efficiency in case of the covalent bond by using the carbonate buffer and the epoxy-based slides. We then tested the covalent setting in case of the p-jet spots with highly diluted samples of pre-labelled BSA. A significant concentration-dependent behavior of the signal was obtained down to picogram levels. Finally, an immunofluorescent protocol was settled with the p-jet spots and a Limit of the Detection (LOD) of 0. 27 pg/mL was reached., Significance: The demonstration here that the p-jet spots are compatible with immunodetection procedures and provide a LOD down to 0.27 pg/mL, launches the p-jet technique towards the development in future of a point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tool. Polysorbates, widely used excipients in drug formulations, present a stability challenge due to complex degradation processes. This study investigates the hydrolysis of polysorbate (PS) under temperature stress (50 °C), focusing on the impact of primary packaging materials (glass vs. plastic vials), buffers (histidine and acetic acid), counterions (chloride vs. malate), and pH (4-7). Our findings reveal that leachables from plastic vials inhibit PS degradation in both histidine and acetic acid buffers. Kinetic parameters derived from sigmoidal fitting suggest distinct degradation mechanisms for each buffer. Furthermore, the malate counterion with histidine displays inhibitory effects on PS hydrolysis. Principal component analysis was employed to identify key factors. Several nanomaterials have been recently used to overcome various challenges in the dental domain. Bioactive glasses, a class of bioceramics, with their outstanding properties including but not limited to their strong biocompatibility, antibacterial characteristics, and bioactivity inside the body's internal milieu have made them valuable biomaterials in a variety of dental domains. The utilization of nanomaterials has improved the performance of teeth, and the incorporation of bioactive glasses has the field of dentistry at an unsurpassed level in different categories such as esthetic and restorative dentistry, periodontics and dental implants, orthodontics, and endodontics. The current study discusses the most recent developments of the bioactive glasses' creation and implementation for dental applications, as well as the challenges and opportunities still facing the field. This work provides an overview of the current obstacles and potential future prospects for bioactive glasses-based nanocomposites to improve their dental uses. Multifunctional bioactive biomaterials with integrated bone and soft tissue regenerability hold great promise for the regeneration of trauma-affected skin and bone defects. The aim of this research was to fabricate aerogel scaffolds (GD-BF) by blending the appropriate proportions of short bioactive glass fiber (BGF), gelatin (Gel), and dopamine (DA). Electrospun polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-BGF fibers were converted into short BGF through calcination and homogenization. Microporous GD-BF scaffolds displayed good elastic deformation recovery and promoted neo-tissue formation. The DA could enable thermal crosslinking and enhance the mechanical properties and structural stability of the GD-BF scaffolds. The BGF-mediated release of therapeutic ions shorten hemostatic time (<30 s) in a rat tail amputation model and a rabbit artery injury model alongside inducing the regeneration of skin appendages (e.g., blood vessels, glands, etc.) in a full-thickness excisional defect model in rats (percentage wound closure: GD-BF2, 98 % vs. control group, 83 %) at day 14 in vitro. Bone regeneration often fails due to implants/grafts lacking vascular supply, causing necrotic tissue and poor integration. Microsurgical techniques are used to overcome this issue, allowing the graft to anastomose. These techniques have limitations, including severe patient morbidity and current research focuses on stimulating angiogenesis in situ using growth factors, presenting limitations, such as a lack of control and increased costs. Non-biological stimuli are necessary to promote angiogenesis for successful bone constructs. Recent studies have reported that bioactive glass dissolution products, such as calcium-releasing nanoparticles, stimulate hMSCs to promote angiogenesis and new vasculature. Moreover, the effect of 3D microporosity has also been reported to be important for vascularisation in vivo. Therefore, we used room-temperature extrusion 3D printing with polylactic acid (PLA) and calcium phosphate (CaP) based glass scaffolds, focusing on geometry and solvent displacement for scaffold recovery. Combining both methods enabled reproducible control of 3D structure, porosity, and surface topography. Scaffolds maintained calcium ion release at physiological levels and supported human mesenchymal stem cell proliferation. Scaffolds stimulated the secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) after 3 days of culture. Subcutaneous implantation in vivo indicated good scaffold integration and blood vessel infiltration as early as one week after. PLA-CaP scaffolds showed increased vessel maturation 4 weeks after implantation without vascular regression. Antimicrobial resistance has forced researchers to produce new dressings for the treatment of infected wounds. Tissue engineering based on biomaterials is used to accelerate the wound healing process. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of bioactive glass (BG) hydrogel coated with hyaluronic acid (HA)-Pluronic F-127 (PLF-127) conjugates containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for healing the infected wounds. HA/BG, PL&HA/BG and PL&HA/BG-AgNPs formulations were designed and their properties were evaluated for application in the wound healing process. Safety and antibacterial properties of formulations were also evaluated. These were applied for the treatment of infected wounds and their efficiencies were assessed by measuring wound contraction, total bacterial count, pathological parameters and the expression of positive cells of cyclin-D1, c-Myc, WNT-1, B-Catenin, and COL-1A. The synthesized thermally reversible hydrogels demonstrated sol-gel transition, indicating the gels' potential as injectable hydrogels. These exhibited antibacterial properties and safety. The PL&HA/BG-AgNPs, PL&HA/BG and HA/BG hydrogels showed greatest wound healing activities, respectively and could compete with Polysporin® due to their effects on total bacterial count and modulation in increasing the expressions of B-Catenin, COL-1A, cyclin-D1 and c-Myc. The effects of glass bead size in the conical space of flow-through cells on the dissolution profiles were investigated in a USP apparatus 4. Dissolution tests of disintegrating and non-disintegrating tablets in flow-through dissolution systems were performed using semi-high precision glass beads with diameters ranging from 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to evaluate the effect of shear stress from the dissolution media flow. The use of smaller glass beads in a larger cell resulted in a faster dissolution of the model formulations under certain test conditions. The effect on the dissolution was highly dependent on the size of the beads in the top layer, including those in contact with the tablets. The absence of a bead-size effect on the dissolution of an orodispersible tablet in a small cell can be explained by the floating fragments during the test. CFD analysis showed that smaller bead diameters led to greater shear stress on the tablet, which was correlated with the dissolution rate. Hence, fluid flow through the narrow gaps between the small beads generated strong local flows, causing shear stress. The size of the glass beads used in flow-through cells affects the dissolution rate of tablets by altering the shear stress on the tablets in certain cases (e.g., direct deposition of the formulation on glass beads, large cells, and very low flow rates). Purpose: This study aimed to develop a novel orthodontic primer that incorporated graphite fluoride (GF) and Bioactive glass (BAG) and to investigate its cell viability, bonding strength, and enamel damage, as well as its antibacterial and remineralization properties., Materials and Methods: Nine groups were prepared by adding different concentrations of GF (1, 2, and 4 wt.%) and BAG (1, 3, and 5 wt.%) to Transbond™ XT orthodontic primer. The prepared primers were compared to the control primer in terms of cell viability, shear bond strength (SBS), adhesive remnant index (ARI), enamel damage index (EDI), and antibacterial test. Then, the groups with better antibacterial properties (GFBAG 1-1, GFBAG 4-1, GFBAG 4-3, GFBAG 4-5) were evaluated for the remineralization properties., Results: All the prepared orthodontic primers with different concentrations of GF/BAG revealed acceptable cell viability levels, with comparable SBS and ARI values to the control primer (p>0.05). Simultaneously, the EDI was reduced, while the antibacterial properties were significantly enhanced when compared to the control group (p0.05). The result of remineralization properties revealed that the selected groups had significantly higher remineralization ability than the control group; this was most pronounced in the GFBAG 4-3 group., Conclusions: All the prepared GF/BAG orthodontic primers are biologically safe with adequate SBS, ARI, and EDI values for clinical application with enhanced antibacterial properties. The GFBAG 4-3 experimental primer reveals the best antibacterial and remineralization properties which require further in-vitro and in-vivo investigations as a preventive measure of white spot lesions.

For better bone regeneration, precise control over the architecture of the scaffolds is necessary. Because the shape of the pore may affect the bone regeneration, therefore, additive manufacturing has been used in this study to fabricate magnetic bioactive glass (MBG) scaffolds with three different architectures, namely, grid, gyroid, and Schwarz D surface with 15 × 15 × 15 mm 3 dimensions and 70% porosity. These scaffolds have been fabricated using an in-house-developed material-extrusion-based additive manufacturing system. The composition of bioactive glass was selected as 45% SiO 2 , 20% Na 2 O, 23% CaO, 6% P 2 O 5 , 2.5% B 2 O 3 , 1% ZnO, 2% MgO, and 0.5% CaF 2 (wt %), and additionally 0.4 wt % of iron carbide nanoparticles were incorporated. Afterward, MBG powder was mixed with a 25% (w/v) Pluronic F-127 solution to prepare a slurry for fabricating scaffolds at 23% relative humidity. The morphological characterization using microcomputed tomography revealed the appropriate pore size distribution and interconnectivity of the scaffolds. The compressive strengths of the fabricated grid, gyroid, and Schwarz D scaffolds were found to be 14.01 ± 1.01, 10.78 ± 1.5, and 12.57 ± 1.2 MPa, respectively. The in vitro study was done by immersing the MBG scaffolds in simulated body fluid for 1, 3, 7, and 14 days. Darcy's law, which describes the flow through porous media, was used to evaluate the permeability of the scaffolds. Furthermore, an anticancer drug (Mitomycin C) was loaded onto these scaffolds, wherein these scaffolds depicted good release behavior. Overall, gyroid-structured scaffolds were found to be the most suitable among the three scaffolds considered in this study for bone tissue engineering and drug-delivery applications.

Three types of coatings (contact-based, release-based, and combined coatings with both contact-based and release-based actions) were prepared and tested for the ability to inactivate SARS-CoV-2. In these coatings, quaternary ammonium surfactants were used as active agents since quaternary ammonium compounds are some of the most commonly used disinfectants. To provide contact-based action, the glass and silicon surfaces with covalently attached quaternary ammonium cationic surfactant were prepared using a dimethyloctadecyl[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ammonium chloride modifier. Surface modification was confirmed by attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy, and contact angle measurements. The grafting density of the modifier was estimated by XPS and elemental analysis. To provide release-based action, the widely used quaternary ammonium cationic disinfectant, benzalkonium chloride (BAC), and a newly synthesized cationic gemini surfactant, C18-4-C18, were bound non-covalently to the surface either through hydrophobic or electrostatic interactions. Virus titration revealed that the surfaces with combined contact-based and release-based action and the surfaces with only release-based action completely inactivate SARS-CoV-2. Coatings containing only covalently bound disinfectant are much less effective; they only provide up to 1.25 log10 reduction in the virus titer, probably because of the low disinfectant content in the surface monolayer. No pronounced differences in the activity between the flat and structured surfaces were observed for any of the coatings under study. Comparative studies of free and electrostatically bound disinfectants show that binding to the surface of nanoparticles diminishes the activity. These data indicate that SARS-CoV-2 is more sensitive to the free disinfectants.

Magnesium ions play an important immune-regulatory role during bone repair. For this study, we prepared micro-nano bioactive glass (MNBG) containing magnesium, which can release magnesium, silicon, and calcium ions and has a positive impact on osteogenic differentiation and vascular regeneration. In this study, MgMNBG was compounded and combined with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) for 3D printing. Afterwards, the physicochemical properties and bone repair performance of the scaffolds were evaluated through in vitro and in vivo experiments. We also investigated the effects of MgMNBG on osteogenic differentiation, immune regulation, and vascular regeneration. The results showed that MgMNBG can inhibit inflammation and promote osteogenesis and angiogenesis by regulating macrophages. Bioactive glasses (BGs) bond with bone by forming hydroxy carbonate apatite (HCA) upon reaction in physiological fluid, a phenomenon known as bioactivity. BGs structural network connectivity determines their bioactivity. Sol-gel BGs are synthesized through the hydrolysis and condensation of metal alkoxide precursors in the presence of a catalyst, in aqueous environments. Several sol-gel synthesis parameters directly impact BG network connectivity: pH (i.e. acid or basic catalysis), water to alkoxide ratio (R w ), alkoxide type and presence of dopant ions. However, the relationship between bioactivity and these parameters remains surprisingly unexplored. This study highlights the relationship between synthesis pH, R w , network connectivity and bioactivity in silica-based sol-gel BGs and BGs doped with titanium (Ti) ions (TiBGs), the latter selected for their known ability to enhance network connectivity. BGs and TiBGs are synthesized with various R w values under acidic and basic conditions, and their bioactivity is assessed in simulated body fluid for 7 days. Increasing R w decreases network connectivity and increases bioactivity of BGs with high network connectivity, as observed for base-catalyzed BGs and for both acid and base catalyzed TiBGs, but not in BGs with lower connectivity as evidenced in acid-catalyzed BGs. Basic catalysis of TiBGs prevents crystalline TiO 2 domain formation, which was instead consistently observed in TiBGs synthesized under acidic catalysis. These findings help the design of BGs for applications where ion release needs to be enhanced even in the presence of dopants that slow down HCA formation, and of BGs with specific properties, e.g. TiO 2 -containing BGs with potential bactericidal activity. We report a study of micro-Raman spectroscopy towards an optimal approach for single cell measurements for the detection of bacteria by vibrational spectroscopy. The use of glass membrane filters was tested by microfiltration to separate individual bacterial cells. The glass membrane filters were applied to the study of Raman spectral classification analysis. This approach achieved the capture and individual detection of spiked bacterial cells. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) of Raman spectra measured on glass membrane filters was successfully used to distinguish several bacterial species.

Despite advances in treatment modalities, bone tumour therapies still face significant challenges. Severe side effects of conventional approaches, such as chemo- and radiation therapy, result in poor survival rates and high tumour recurrence rates, which are the most common issues that need to be improved upon. The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic properties of 45S5 bioactive glass (BG) for targeting bone tumours. The viability of the cells derived from osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and giant cell tumours was significantly reduced in the presence of 45S5-BG. In contrast, the viability of non-malignant osteoblast-like cells, chondrocytes, and bone marrow-derived stromal cells was not or only slightly affected. While alterations to the particle surface induced by heat treatment, acid etching, or incubation in a simulated body fluid had only minor effects on cytotoxicity, reducing the particle size or sintering the material significantly improved the cytotoxic effect of 45S5-BG. Further, using a chicken chorioallantoic membrane assay, the co-transplantation of 45S5-BG resulted in a significant reduction in tumour formation in vivo. Given the known positive effects of BGs on bone regeneration, our findings suggest that 45S5-BG holds great potential for the development of new and effective bone tumour therapies, with minimal side effects on non-malignant cells and simultaneous contribution to bone healing.

Background: Craniofacial bone regeneration represents a dynamic area within tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Central to this field, is the continual exploration of new methodologies for template fabrication, leveraging established bio ceramic materials, with the objective of restoring bone integrity and facilitating successful implant placements., Methods: Photopolymerized templates were prepared using three distinct bio ceramic materials, specifically a wet chemically synthesized bioactive glass and two commercially sourced hydroxyapatite variants. These templates underwent comprehensive characterization to assess their physicochemical and mechanical attributes, employing techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and nano-computed tomography. Evaluation of their biocompatibility was conducted through interaction with primary human osteoblasts (hOB) and subsequent examination using scanning electron microscopy., Results: The results demonstrated that composite showed intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions with the photopolymer, while computerized tomography unveiled the porous morphology and distribution within the templates. A relatively higher porosity percentage (31.55 ± 8.70%) and compressive strength (1.53 ± 0.11 MPa) was noted for bioactive glass templates. Human osteoblast cultured on bioactive glass showed higher viability compared to other specimens. Scanning micrographs of human osteoblast on templated showed cellular adhesion and the presence of filopodia and lamellipodia., Conclusion: In summary these templates have the potential to be used for alveolar bone regeneration in critical size defect. Photopolymerization of bioceramics may be an interesting technique for scaffolds fabrication for bone tissue engineering application but needs more optimization to overcome existing issues like the ideal ratio of the photopolymer to bioceramics., (© 2024. The current study aimed to develop a reusable antibacterial coating that can be employed for efficient bacterial killing. We synthesized a water-soluble methacrylamide-based copolymer consisting of cationic and hydrophobic groups and coated it onto a glass surface through the formation of semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPN) of aminopropyl triethoxysilane and glutaraldehyde. The coated surface was exposed to Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, where the surface exhibited rapid bacterial killing ability within 5-15 min. The substrates displayed a minimal loss of antibacterial activity even after two water rinse cycles. The coatings were able to kill both the bacterial strains even after 5 weeks, suggesting excellent longevity. The surfaces were stable after repeated wiping cycles with 70% IPA using Kim wipes and 5 min sonication in DI water as no bactericidal activity was lost. Thus, a sustainable antibacterial copolymer coating was developed, and it is stable and reusable against bacterial contamination and could be employed as a long-term antibacterial coating.

Glass nano/micron pipettes, owing to their easy preparation, unique confined space at the tip, and modifiable inner surface of the tip, can capture the ion current signal caused by a single entity, making them widely used in the construction of highly sensitive and highly selective electrochemical sensors for single entity analysis. Compared with other solid-state nanopores, their conical nano-tip causes less damage to cells when inserted into them, thereby becoming a powerful tool for the in situ analysis of important substances in cells. However, glass nanopipettes have some shortcomings, such as poor mechanical properties, difficulty in precise preparation (aperture less than 50 nm), and easy blockage during complex real sample detection, limiting their practicability. Therefore, in recent years, researchers have conducted a series of studies on glass micropipettes. Ionic current rectification technology is a novel electrochemical analysis technique. Compared with traditional electrochemical analysis methods, it does not generate redox products during the detection process; therefore, it can not only be used for the determination of non-electrochemically active substances, but also causes less damage to the cell/living body in situ analysis, becoming a powerful analysis technology for the in situ analysis of cells/ in vivo in recent years. In this review, we summarize the preparation and functionalization of glass nano/micron pipettes and introduce the sensing mechanisms of two electrochemical sensing platforms constructed using glass nano/micron pipette-based ion current rectification sensing technology as well as their applications in single cell/ in vivo analysis, existing problems, and future prospects.

Enhancing the antimicrobial activity of high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters while maintaining filtration efficiency and pressure drop is currently an urgent issue for preventing the spread of pathogenic microorganisms. Herein, inspired by vines which can enwind fences to fix as well as decorate them, a flexible antimicrobial chitin nanofiber (ChNF@CuO x ) was fabricated and loaded onto the rigid glass fiber (GF) skeleton of a HEPA filter. Through the physical interaction, ChNF@CuO x was spontaneously enwound on GF, and ChNF@CuO x itself interweaved to form a new nanonetwork between the GF skeleton. The obtained antimicrobial air filter (ChNF@CuO x /GF) with a unique nanonetwork increased the filtration efficiency of the HEPA filter. Meanwhile, it possessed excellent inactivation ability against Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , and Candida albicans due to the urchin-like in situ grown CuO x on the ChNF. In particular, the oxygen vacancies generated unexpectedly in CuO x enabled it to produce reactive oxygen species. After eight cycles of antimicrobial assays, the antimicrobial rates of bacteria were higher than 99.5%, and those of fungi were greater than 98.3%. The successful synthesis of antimicrobial fibers and the construction of multidimensional nanoscale structures through a simple postprocessing method provide a new design mentality for antimicrobial functionalization for HEPA filters.

Objective: The demand for esthetics has increased in today's world and most parents prefer to preserve their children's primary anterior teeth until their natural exfoliation. However, an intracanal post is required to provide retention for reconstruction of severely damaged anterior teeth due to caries or trauma. Various materials and methods may be used for the fabrication of intracanal posts. This study assessed the fracture strength and fracture mode of primary canine teeth reconstructed with prefabricated and customized polyethylene and glass fiber posts., Materials and Methods: This in vitro study evaluated 60 extracted primary canine teeth in four groups (n = 15). After pulpectomy and post space preparation with 4 mm depth, composite resin post, prefabricated glass fiber post (Whitepost), customized glass fiber post (Interlig), or customized polyethylene fiber post (Ribbond) were placed in the root canals to provide retention, and the tooth crown was restored with bulk-fill composite resin. The fracture strength was then measured in a universal testing machine. The fracture mode was also evaluated visually., Results: The mean fracture strength was 22.45 ± 5.06, 33.10 ± 8.5, 30.20 ± 7.33, and 32.61 ± 5.73 N/mm 2 in the composite resin post, Whitepost, Interlig, and Ribbond groups, respectively. The fracture strength was significantly lower in the composite group than in the remaining three groups (p = 0.000). No other significant differences were found (p > 0.05). Also, no significant difference was observed among the study groups in the fracture mode (p = 0.241)., Conclusion: The composite resin post yielded a significantly lower fracture strength than the prefabricated and customized glass and polyethylene fiber posts, but the fracture mode was not significantly different among the four groups., (© 2024 The Author(s). Luteolin has various pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antitumor characteristics. Due to its potential value in drugs and functional foods, it is important to develop an efficient method for detecting luteolin. In this work, the poor selectivity of existing luteolin nonenzymatic sensors was solved by translating the enzyme-catalyzed reaction from bulk solution to the surface of a horseradish peroxidase (HRP) modified electrode through an electrocatalytic oxidation process. Here, we modified the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs; ZIF-67 here, abbreviated as ZIF), functional nanomaterials, and HRP and finally covered it with Nafion (NF). In this case, luteolin acts as a hydrogen donor, and the electrode acts as a hydrogen acceptor; the oxidation reaction occurs on the electrode surface. The use of ZIF-67 ensured the conformational stability of HRP to ensure the selectivity and anti-interference property, and SDS-dispersed multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) enhanced the electrode conductivity. The use of NF avoids shedding of the electrode material during the testing process. A UV-vis spectrophotometer was used to study the selectivity of luteolin by HRP and the compatibility between HRP and ZIF. The materials were characterized and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Due to the synergistic effect of these nanomaterials, the linear range of NF/ZIF-HRP/MWCNTs-SDS/GCE was 1.0 × 10 -2 to 6.0 μM, with detection limits of 25.3 nM (S/N = 3). The biosensor showed long-term stability and reproducibility, with a relative standard deviation of 4.2% for the peak current ( n = 5). Finally, the biosensor was successfully used to detect luteolin in carrots, celery, and cauliflower.

With the e-waste growing rapidly all over the globe due to growing demand of electronics, smartphones, etc., coming up with an efficient and sustainable recycling process is the need of the hour. The present work reports a novel and sustainable process of manufacturing Ni alloy by bringing together three major waste streams such as waste Ni-MH batteries, e-waste plastics, and waste glass. The chosen temperature (1550 °C) favours the reduction of nickel-oxide by e-waste plastic as the reductant and sends rare earth elements present in the waste Ni-MH battery as oxide mixture to the slag phase. Waste glass powder used in this process functions as the fluxing agent, hence not requiring any additional flux. The reduction mechanism is gas-based, controlled mainly by hydrogen and carbon monoxide gases released as a result of decomposition of e-waste plastic as reaction commenced from cold zone (∼300 °C) to hot zone (1550 °C) in the horizontal tubular furnace. Formation of nickel alloy and enrichment of slag with mixture of rare earth oxides were confirmed by XRD, SEM-EDS, and Rietveld refining analysis performed on the XRD spectra of slag phase. ICP-OES (Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy) and LIBS (laser induced breakdown spectrometer KT-100S) confirmed the high metal content in the alloy, thereby emphasizing the purity (∼98%) which is close to the composition of nickel super alloy. A maximum of 61% by weight REO enrichment was achieved in the slag phase, having La 2 O 3 :44.6%, Pr 2 O 3 :14.8%, and Nd 2 O 3 : 1.6% under optimised experimental conditions (1550 °C, 15 min, and 20% waste glass powder). The utilization of waste from various sources plays an important role in minimizing environmental pollution and civil construction costs. In this research, the mechanical properties of concrete were studied by mixing electronic waste (EW), glass powder (GW), and ceramic tile waste (CW). The effects of weight percentages of EW, GW, and CW are considered to investigate improvements in mechanical properties such as compressive strength (CS), split tensile strength (STS), and flexural strength (FS) of concrete. Taguchi analysis has been applied to predict the optimum composition of waste mixing percentages. The Multi-Objective Optimization Ratio Analysis (MOORA) techniques are applied to estimate the optimum composition of mixing wastes for maximizing the CS, STS, and FS of concrete. It was observed that 10 wt.% of EW, 15 wt.% of GW, and 30 wt.% of CW are predicted as the optimal mixing combinations to obtain a maximum compressive strength of 48.763 MPa, a split tensile strength of 4.178 MPa, and a flexural strength of 7.737 MPa, respectively. Finally, the predicted optimum waste-mixed weight percentages were used to examine the microstructure and various elements in the concrete using SEM and XRD analysis. When compared to conventional concrete, the optimum waste-mixed concrete has improved its compressive strength (38.453%), split tensile strength (41.149%), and flexural strength (36.215%)., (© 2024. Sodium alginate (SA) has gained widespread acclaim as a carrier medium for three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting of cells and a diverse array of bioactive substances, attributed to its remarkable biocompatibility and affordability. The conventional approach for fabricating alginate-based tissue engineering constructs entails a post-treatment phase employing a calcium ion solution. However, this method proves ineffectual in addressing the predicament of low precision during the 3D printing procedure and is unable to prevent issues such as non-uniform alginate gelation and substantial distortions. In this study, we introduced borate bioactive glass (BBG) into the SA matrix, capitalizing on the calcium ions released from the degradation of BBG to incite the cross-linking reaction within SA, resulting in the formation of BBG-SA hydrogels. Building upon this fundamental concept, it unveiled that BBG-SA hydrogels greatly enhance the precision of SA in extrusion-based 3D printing and significantly reduce volumetric contraction shrinkage post-printing, while also displaying certain adhesive properties and electrical conductivity. Furthermore, in vitro cellular experiments have unequivocally established the excellent biocompatibility of BBG-SA hydrogel and its capacity to actively stimulate osteogenic differentiation. Osteosarcoma is one of the most dreadful bone neoplasms in young people, necessitating the development of innovative therapies that can effectively eliminate tumors while minimizing damage to limb function. An ideal therapeutic strategy should possess three essential capabilities: antitumor effects, tissue-protective properties, and the ability to enhance osteogenesis. In this study, self-assembled Ce-substituted molybdenum blue (CMB) nanowheel crystals are synthesized and loaded onto 3D-printed bioactive glass (CMB@BG) scaffolds to develop a unique three-in-one treatment approach for osteosarcoma. The CMB@BG scaffolds exhibit outstanding photothermally derived tumor ablation within the near-infrared-II window due to the surface plasmon resonance properties of the CMB nanowheel crystals. Furthermore, the photothermally synergistic catalytic effect of CMB promotes the rapid scavenging of reactive oxygen species caused by excessive heat, thereby suppressing inflammation and protecting surrounding tissues. The CMB@BG scaffolds possess pro-proliferation and pro-differentiation capabilities that efficiently accelerate bone regeneration within bone defects. Altogether, the CMB@BG scaffolds that combine highly efficient tumor ablation, tissue protection based on anti-inflammatory mechanisms, and enhanced osteogenic ability are likely to be a point-to-point solution for the comprehensive therapeutic needs of osteosarcoma., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)
