The authors investigated the differences in characteristics and risk behaviors endorsed by detained adolescent methamphetamine users and compared them with other drug users. Subjects completed the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory and a questionnaire in which sociodemographics and behavioral information were explored and compared. Multivariate analyses and self-reports revealed that meth-using adolescents were more likely than other drug users to present symptoms of a clinical syndrome, and had higher prevalence rates of attempted suicide and parents who use drugs. Results indicate significant differences between these groups and suggest the need for individualized drug treatment. (Contains 2 tables.)

The authors describe use and development of the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (E. I. McConnaughy, J. O. Prochaska, & W. F. Velicer, 1983) and examine the psychometric properties of scores from incarcerated male adolescents. Cluster analysis revealed 3 unique profiles (Precontemplators, Participators, and Undifferentiated). Implications for clinical use with adolescent populations are discussed.

The present study examined constructs of parents, namely parental monitoring and perceptions, who were accompanying their adolescent child to juvenile court. The Juvenile Offender Parent Questionnaire (JOPQ) was administered to 151 parents/guardians of juveniles between the ages of 13 and 17 being arraigned in juvenile court. Results reveal that parents of weapon carriers and parents of fighters both appear to be exasperated when compared with other parents who were also accompanying their adolescent child to juvenile court. Parents of weapon carriers and parents of fighters report increased exasperation with regard to their child, difficulty in monitoring their child's behavior, fear of physical harm from their child, and the perception that their child has been exposed to more violence than the comparison group. Examined the cluster-derived typologies of males in a juvenile offender sample. Adolescent males, age 12-17, in a regional youth detention center were given the Behavior Assessment System for Children-Self Report-Adolescent (BASC-SRP-A; C. Reynolds &R. Kamphaus, 1992) and the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory (MACI; T. Millon, 1993). Hierarchical cluster analysis was used to determine cluster membership across the scales of the BASC-SRP-A, and these clusters were compared to cluster groupings across the scales of the MACI. Clusters were then compared to the severity of youth offense history. A five-cluster solution was developed with only one cluster suggesting severe problem behaviors. However, all of the BASC-SRP-A clusters seemed to endorse more symptomatic problem behaviors on the MACI. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed, including the under-reporting or over-reporting of different instruments in certain populations. (Contains 2 tables and 5 figures.)

The present study is a preliminary investigation into the development of a parent self-report instrument, the Juvenile Offender Parent Questionnaire (JOPQ). A large pool of items was rationally derived from a model of parent competency and then administered to 243 parents of children who were making appearances in juvenile court. Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed a six-factor solution: Exasperation in Regard to the Child, Mistrust of the Justice System, Shame Over Parenting Self-Efficacy, Parental Monitoring, Fear of the Child, and Parent Perception of Child's Exposure to Violence. Implications for use of the scale in research and practice are discussed.

Assessed female juvenile offenders' perceptions of their existing family functioning characteristics and the quality of their relationships with their mothers. One test indicated that all of the family functioning constructs measured except communication positively related to the quality of the mother-daughter relationship. Another test indicated that only the simple effect of general family functioning contributed significantly to the quality of the relationship. (SM)

Examines discrepancies between juvenile offenders and their parents' profiles on the Child Behavior Checklist and the Youth Self-Report, which were completed by adolescent-parent dyads (N=51) receiving probation services. Parents scored higher than their adolescents on both Internalization and Externalization subscales. Parents scored their children's behavior more negatively and attributed that behavior to individual traits. Discusses clinical implications. (JDM)

Examines the clinical profile of children who have witnessed severe marital discord in comparison with normative children. Results indicate that the witnessing group of children has lower social competence, has more behavior problems, and exhibits more internalizing and externalizing behaviors than the comparative normative sample. Reviews the results of the effectiveness of counseling services provided by the Juvenile Counseling and Assessment Program of the Juvenile Court of Clarke County, Georgia. Individual and group counseling services were provided for 55 adjudicated delinquent youths for four to six months. The recidivism rates of the youths who had received counseling services were compared to a control group who had not received counseling services. (Author/MKA)

Examines intimacy and sexual satisfaction in unmarried couple relationships and the role that gender plays with a sample of college students (N=159). Women reported more intimacy and sexual satisfaction than men. Warns that a cautious interpretation of the results is appropriate given the small and specific sample size. Discusses future research. Explores the relationship between parents and teachers as raters of children's behavior. Results, based on 48 families, indicate that internalizing and externalizing behavior scores revealed a significant relationship between mothers' and teachers' reports for externalizing behaviors only. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory – Adolescent (MMPI-A) is a widely researched personality assessment in psychology. However, the utility of the MMPI-A for detecting trauma among juvenile offenders is limited. A 17-item measure – Trauma Scale for Juvenile Offenders (TSJO) was examined to evaluate the trauma detection accuracy of the MMPI-A among juvenile offenders and provide preliminary validation for the TSJO. To determine the diagnostic utility of MMPI-A clinical scales, mean comparisons were conducted and significant scales were retained in a hierarchical logistic regression. To examine the diagnostic accuracy of the TSJO, the total score was included in the hierarchical model. TSJO cross tabulations were computed for the cutoff score. Mean comparisons by trauma group revealed Pa, Pt, Sc, and Si clinical scale differences. Regression output indicated statistical accuracy, but with limited clinical utility. Results showed moderate trauma detection accuracy (63.4%) of the TSJO cutoff. Findings provide limited support for using MMPI-A clinical scales in isolation when evaluating juvenile offenders for trauma. However, results provide empirical support for the TSJO as a valid measure for detecting trauma for this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
