Abstract

The interfaces between electrode and electrolyte play a vital role in various electrochemical systems. However, the understanding of such embedded interfaces and interfacial processes is still limited partly because of the short of proper characterizations tools, especially in-situ/operando techniques. In the past decade, substantial effort has been devoted in the development of in-situ/operando techniques to investigate the solid/liquid interfaces. One successful approach is the combination of in-situ liquid cells and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (sXAS). In this review, we showcased several recent examples using such liquid-cell-based in-situ/operando sXAS method to study different aspects of the electrode/electrolyte interface under reaction conditions, including the adsorption and deposition of solute species on electrode surface, morphological and chemical changes of electrode surface, and potential-dependent orientations of interfacial solvent molecules. These examples demonstrated capability of such in-situ/operando sXAS techniques in providing element- and chemical-sensitive interfacial information. This in-situ/operando sXAS technique also opens the way to the investigation of various solid/liquid interfaces in other important heterogeneous reactions.

Abstract

The optical design of a Hettrick-Underwood-style soft X-ray spectrometer with Wolter type 1 mirrors is presented. The spectrometer with a nominal length of 3.1 m can achieve a high resolving power (resolving power higher than 10000) in the soft X-ray regime when a small source beam (<3 µm in the grating dispersion direction) and small pixel detector (5 µm effective pixel size) are used. Adding Wolter mirrors to the spectrometer before its dispersive elements can realize the spatial imaging capability, which finds applications in the spectroscopic studies of spatially dependent electronic structures in tandem catalysts, heterostructures, etc. In the pump-probe experiments where the pump beam perturbs the materials followed by the time-delayed probe beam to reveal the transient evolution of electronic structures, the imaging capability of the Wolter mirrors can offer the pixel-equivalent femtosecond time delay between the pump and probe beams when their wavefronts are not collinear. In combination with some special sample handing systems, such as liquid jets and droplets, the imaging capability can also be used to study the time-dependent electronic structure of chemical transformation spanning multiple time domains from microseconds to nanoseconds. The proposed Wolter mirrors can also be adopted to the existing soft X-ray spectrometers that use the Hettrick-Underwood optical scheme, expanding their capabilities in materials research.

Abstract

The Mg/S battery is attractive because of its high theoretical energy density and the abundance of Mg and S on the earth. However, its development is hindered by the lack of understanding to the underlying electrochemical reaction mechanism of its charge–discharge processes. Here, using a unique in situX-ray absorption spectroscopic tool, we systematically study the reaction pathways of the Mg/S cells in Mg(HMDS)2–AlCl3electrolyte. We find that the capacity degradation is mainly due to the formation of irreversible discharge products, such as MgS and Mg3S8, through a direct electrochemical deposition or a chemical disproportionation of intermediate polysulfide. In light of the fundamental understanding, we propose to use TiS2as a catalyst to activate the irreversible reaction of low-order MgSxand MgS, which results in an increased discharging capacity up to 900 mAh·g–1and a longer cycling life.
