5. Measuring Accuracy of Automated Parsing and Categorization Tools and Processes in Digital Investigations

Abstract

This work presents a method for the measurement of the accuracy of evidential artifact extraction and categorization tasks in digital forensic investigations. Instead of focusing on the measurement of accuracy and errors in the functions of digital forensic tools, this work proposes the application of information retrieval measurement techniques that allow the incorporation of errors introduced by tools and analysis processes. This method uses a `gold standard' that is the collection of evidential objects determined by a digital investigator from suspect data with an unknown ground truth. This work proposes that the accuracy of tools and investigation processes can be evaluated compared to the derived gold standard using common precision and recall values. Two example case studies are presented showing the measurement of the accuracy of automated analysis tools as compared to an in-depth analysis by an expert. Abstract

As more businesses and users adopt cloud computing services, security vulnerabilities will be increasingly found and exploited. There are many technological and political challenges where investigation of potentially criminal incidents in the cloud are concerned. Security experts, however, must still be able to acquire and analyze data in a methodical, rigorous and forensically sound manner. This work applies the STRIDE asset-based risk assessment method to cloud computing infrastructure for the purpose of identifying and assessing an organization's ability to respond to and investigate breaches in cloud computing environments. An extension to the STRIDE risk assessment model is proposed to help organizations quickly respond to incidents while ensuring acquisition and integrity of the largest amount of digital evidence possible. 7. Automated Inference of Past Action Instances in Digital Investigations

Abstract

As the amount of digital devices suspected of containing digital evidence increases, case backlogs for digital investigations are also increasing in many organizations. To ensure timely investigation of requests, this work proposes the use of signature-based methods for automated action instance approximation to automatically reconstruct past user activities within a compromised or suspect system. This work specifically explores how multiple instances of a user action may be detected using signature-based methods during a post-mortem digital forensic analysis. A system is formally defined as a set of objects, where a subset of objects may be altered on the occurrence of an action. A novel action-trace update time threshold is proposed that enables objects to be categorized by their respective update patterns over time. By integrating time into event reconstruction, the most recent action instance approximation as well as limited past instances of the action may be differentiated and their time values approximated. Abstract

The use of automation in digital forensic investigations is not only a technological issue, but also has political and social implications. This work discusses some challenges with the implementation and acceptance of automation in digital forensic investigation, and possible implications for current digital forensic investigators. Current attitudes towards the use of automation in digital forensic investigations are examined, as well as the issue of digital investigators knowledge acquisition and retention. The argument is made for a well planned, careful use of automation going forward that allows for a more efficient and effective use of automation in digital forensic investigations while at the same time attempting to improve the overall quality of expert investigators. Targeting and carefully controlling automated solutions for beginning investigators may improve the speed and quality of investigations while at the same time letting expert digital investigators spend more time utilizing expert level knowledge required in manual phases of investigations. By considering how automated solutions are being implemented into digital investigations, investigation unit managers can increase the efficiency of their unit while at the same time maximizing their return on investment for expert level digital investigator training., Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure

9. Signature Based Detection of User Events for Post-Mortem Forensic Analysis

Abstract

This paper introduces a novel approach to user event reconstruction by showing the practicality of generating and implementing signature-based analysis methods to reconstruct high-level user actions from a collection of low-level traces found during a post-mortem forensic analysis of a system. Traditional forensic analysis and the inferences an investigator normally makes when given digital evidence, are examined. It is then demonstrated that this natural process of inferring high-level events from low-level traces may be encoded using signature-matching techniques. Abstract

Lateral-flow immunochromatographic assays (LFIA) is one of the most common low-cost, simple-to-use and rapid methods for point-of-care determining various types of bacterial, viral and autoimmune diseases. The selectivity and sensitivity of the analysis is determined by the complementarity interactions of protein molecules and attaching an analytical label to the protein. Recently, quantum dots (QDs) have been considered the most promising protein labels. In this study, oriented conjugation of QDs with antibodies (Abs) to glycoprotein B (gB) of the Aujeszky's disease was conducted by the carbodiimide-succinimide method. There is has been proposed a polymer coating of QDs suitable for site-specific conjugation based on the vinylpyrrolidone-maleic anhydride-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (VP-MAN-EGDMA) copolymer. Using a portable fluorescent reader were determined the minimum detection limits of the considered immunochromatographic test-systems with QDs as Abs labels., Иммунохроматографический анализ (ИХА) является одним из наиболее распространенных экспресс-методов для определения различных видов бактериальных, вирусных и аутоиммунных заболеваний. Селективность анализа определяется комплементарностью взаимодействий белковых молекул, а чувствительность анализа достигается присоединением аналитической метки к белку. В последнее время к наиболее перспективным меткам белков относят квантовые точки (КТ). В данной работе была проведена ориентированная конъюгация КТ с антителами (АТ) к гликопротеину B (gB) вируса болезни Ауески карбодиимид-сукцинимидным методом. Предложено подходящее для ориентированной конъюгации полимерное покрытие КТ на основе сополимера винилпирролидон – малеиновый ангидрид – этиленгликольдиметакрилат (ВП-МАН-ЭГДМА). С помощью портативного флуоресцентного ридера были определены минимальные пределы обнаружения рассматриваемых иммунохроматографических тест-систем с КТ в качестве меток АТ.

Abstract

The tampering of the digital crime scene has become more common. When tampering behaviour is successful, it does not leave a trace of either the incriminating evidence or the act of tampering and the digital evidence that digital investigators seek will be absent. The research into the automatic detection of digital evidence tampering has been ongoing for over 13 years. Many approaches had been proposed, but the practical tools for automatic or semi-automated detection of evidence tampering are still missing. Due to the complexity of real-world computers and the differences between software installed on different computers automatic analysis is hard. A similar problem exists in medical imaging. Despite the common grand design, every human is unique and complex, and it is hard to come up with the exact rules for detecting lesions in medical images. Visualization for forensic analysis of the data stored on a specific device has received much less attention, while the use of visualization for detection of digital evidence tampering is virtually unexplored. This paper proposes, for the first time, a semi-automated approach based on visualization of relevant data properties, helping human investigators to detect digital evidence tampering and anomaly. This is analogous to computer-aided processing of medical X-Ray images that enhance the visibility of lesions facilitating easier detection by a doctor. This paper aims to identify data tampered features on the digital devices, then find suitable visualization to display identified data tampered features for investigators. One of the outstanding features of the approach proposed in this paper for detecting digital evidence tampering is its malleability. It can easily apply to any specific or whole part of data in the digital devices, visualize, and reveal offender concealment behaviour concerning the detection of evidence tampering.
