The current IAU definition of "planet" is problematic because it is vague and excludes exoplanets. Here, we describe aspects of quantitative planetary taxonomy and examine the results of unsupervised clustering of Solar System bodies to guide the development of possible classification frameworks. Two unsurprising conclusions emerged from the clustering analysis: (1) satellites are distinct from planets and (2) dynamical dominance is a natural organizing principle for planetary taxonomy. To generalize an existing dynamical dominance criterion, we adopt a universal clearing timescale applicable to all central bodies (brown dwarfs, stars, and stellar remnants). Then, we propose two quantitative, unified frameworks to define both planets and exoplanets. The first framework is aligned with both the IAU definition of planet in the Solar System and the IAU working definition of an exoplanet. Among the nearly 30,000 known near-Earth asteroids (NEAs), only tens of them possess Earth co-orbital characteristics with semi-major axes $\sim$1 au. In particular, 469219 Kamo`oalewa (2016 HO3), upcoming target of China's Tianwen-2 asteroid sampling mission, exhibits a meta-stable 1:1 mean-motion resonance with Earth. Intriguingly, recent ground-based observations show that Kamo`oalewa has spectroscopic characteristics similar to space-weathered lunar silicates, hinting at a lunar origin instead of an asteroidal one like the vast majority of NEAs. Here we use numerical simulations to demonstrate that Kamo`oalewa's physical and orbital properties are compatible with a fragment from a crater larger than 10--20 km formed on the Moon in the last few million years. The impact could have ejected sufficiently large fragments into heliocentric orbits, some of which could be transferred to Earth 1:1 resonance and persist today. This leads us to suggest the young lunar crater Giordano Bruno (22 km diameter, 1--10 Ma age) as the most likely source, linking a specific asteroid in space to its source crater on the Moon. The hypothesis will be tested by the Tianwen-2 mission when it returns a sample of Kamo`oalewa. We examined the past history of the three most detached TransNeptunian Objects (TNOs) -- Sedna, 2012 VP113, and Leleakuhonua (2015 TG387) -- the three clearest members of the dynamical class known as sednoids, with high perihelia distances $q$. By integrating backward their nominal (and a set of cloned) orbits for the Solar System's age, we surprisingly find that the only time all their apsidal lines tightly cluster was 4.5 Gyr ago, at perihelion longitude $\varpi$ of $200^\circ$. This "primordial alignment" is independent of the observational biases that contribute to the current on-sky clustering in the large-semimajor axis Kuiper Belt. If future sednoid discoveries confirm these findings, this strongly argues for an initial event during the planet formation epoch which imprinted this particular apsidal orientation on the early detached TNO population. Their apsidal orientations were then subsequently modified only by the simple precession from the 4 giant planets (and weakly by the galactic tide). If other sednoids also cluster around the same primordial value, various models suggesting a still present planet in the outer Solar System would be incompatible with this alignment. We inspected two scenarios that could potentially explain the primordial alignment. First, a rogue planet model (where another massive planet raises perihelia near its own longitude until ejection) naturally produces this signature. Alternatively, a close stellar passage early in Solar System history raises perihelia, but it is poor at creating strong apsidal clustering. We show that all other known $35

Jovian co-orbitals share Jupiter's orbit in 1:1 mean motion resonance. This includes $>$10,000 so-called Trojan asteroids surrounding the leading (L4) and trailing (L5) Lagrange points, viewed as stable groups dating back to planet formation. Via a massive numerical study we identify for the first time some Trojans which are certainly only `metastable'; instead of being primordial, they are recent captures from heliocentric orbits into moderately long-lived (10 kyr - 100 Myr) metastable states that will escape back to the scattering regime. We have also identified (1) the first two jovian horseshoe co-orbitals that exist for many resonant libration periods, and (2) eight jovian quasi-satellites with metastable lifetimes of 4-130 kyr. Our perspective on the Trojan population is thus now more complex as Jupiter joins the other giant planets in having known metastable co-orbitals which are in steady-state equilibrium with the planet-crossing Centaur and asteroid populations, in agreement with theoretical estimates.

Using the absolute detection calibration and abundant detections of the OSSOS (Outer Solar System Origin Survey) project, we provide population measurements for the main Kuiper Belt. For absolute magnitude $H_r<8.3$, there are 30,000 non-resonant main-belt objects, with twice as many hot-component objects than cold, and with total mass of 0.014 $M_\Earth$, only 1/7 of which is in the cold belt (assuming a cold-object albedo about half that of hot component objects). We show that transneptunian objects with $5.5 < H_r < 8.3$ (rough diameters 400--100~km) have indistinguishable absolute magnitude (size) distributions, regardless of being in the cold classical Kuiper belt (thought to be primordial) or the `hot' population (believed to be implanted after having been formed elsewhere). We discuss how this result was not apparent in previous examinations of the size distribution due to the complications of fitting assumed power-law functional forms to the detections at differing depths. This shared size distribution is surprising in light of the common paradigm that the hot population planetesimals formed in a higher density environment much closer to the Sun, in an environment that also (probably later) formed larger (dwarf planet and bigger) objects. The detached transneptunian objects (TNOs) are those with semimajor axes beyond the 2:1 resonance with Neptune, which are neither resonant nor scattering. Using the detached sample from the OSSOS telescopic survey, we produce the first studies of their orbital distribution based on matching the orbits and numbers of the known TNOs after accounting for survey biases. We show that the detached TNO perihelion ($q$) distribution cannot be uniform, but is instead better matched by two uniform components with a break near $q\approx40$ au. We produce parametric two-component models that are not rejectable by the OSSOS data set, and estimate that there are $36,\!000^{+12,000}_{-9,000}$ detached TNOs with absolute magnitudes $H_r < 8.66$ ($D \gtrsim 100$ km) and semimajor axes $48 < a < 250$ au (95% confidence limits). Although we believe these heuristic two-parameter models yield a correct population estimate, we then use the same methods to show that the perihelion distribution of a detached disk created by a simulated rogue planet matches the $q$ distribution even better, suggesting that the temporary presence of other planets in the early Solar System is a promising model to create today's large semimajor axis TNO population. This numerical model results in a detached TNO population estimate of $48,\!000^{+15,000}_{-12,000}$. The orbital distribution of transneptunian objects (TNOs) in the distant Kuiper Belt (with semimajor axes beyond the 2:1 resonance, roughly $a$=50-100 au) provides constraints on the dynamical history of the outer solar system. Recent studies show two striking features of this region: 1) a very large population of objects in distant mean-motion resonances with Neptune, and 2) the existence of a substantial detached population (non-resonant objects largely decoupled from Neptune). Neptune migration models are able to implant some resonant and detached objects during the planet migration era, but many fail to match a variety of aspects of the orbital distribution. In this work, we report simulations carried out using an improved version of the GPU-based code GLISSE, following 100,000 test particles per simulation in parallel while handling their planetary close encounters. We demonstrate for the first time that a 2 Earth-mass rogue planet temporarily present during planet formation can abundantly populate both the distant resonances and the detached populations, surprisingly even without planetary migration. We show how weak encounters with the rogue greatly increase the efficiency of filling the resonances, while also dislodging TNOs out of resonance once they reach high perihelia. The rogue's secular gravitational influence simultaneously generates numerous detached objects observed at all semimajor axes. The Colours of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (Col-OSSOS) has gathered high quality, near-simultaneous (g-r) and (r-J) colours of 92 Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) with (u-g) and (r-z) gathered for some. We present the current state of the survey and data analysis. Recognizing that the optical colours of most icy bodies broadly follow the reddening curve, we present a new projection of the optical-NIR colours, which rectifies the main non-linear features in the optical-NIR along the ordinates. We find evidence for a bifurcation in the projected colours which presents itself as a diagonal empty region in the optical-NIR. A reanalysis of past colour surveys reveals the same bifurcation. We interpret this as evidence for two separate surface classes: the BrightIR class spans the full range of optical colours and broadly follows the reddening curve, while the FaintIR objects are limited in optical colour, and are less bright in the NIR than the BrightIR objects. We present a two class model. Objects in each class consist of a mix of separate blue and red materials, and span a broad range in colour. Spectra are modelled as linear optical and NIR spectra with different slopes, that intersect at some transition wavelength. The underlying spectral properties of the two classes fully reproduce the observed structures in the UV-optical-NIR colour space ($0.4\lesssim\lambda\lesssim1.4 \mbox{ $\mu$m}$), including the bifurcation observed in the Col-OSSOS and H/WTSOSS datasets, the tendency for cold classical KBOs to have lower (r-z) colours than excited objects, and the well known bimodal optical colour distribution., Comment: 13 figures, 5 tables, submitted

There is a complex inclination structure present in the transneptunian object (TNO) orbital distribution in the main classical belt region (between orbital semimajor axes of 39 and 48 au). The long-term gravitational effects of the giant planets make TNO orbits precess, but non-resonant objects maintain a nearly constant 'free' inclination ($I_\text{free}$) with respect to a local forced precession pole. Because of the likely cosmogonic importance of the distribution of this quantity, we tabulate free inclinations for all main-belt TNOs, each individually computed using barycentric orbital elements with respect to each object's local forcing pole. We show that the simplest method, based on the Laplace-Lagrange secular theory, is unable to give correct forcing poles for objects near the $\nu_{18}$ secular resonance, resulting in poorly conserved $I_\text{free}$ values in much of the main belt. We thus instead implemented an averaged Hamiltonian to obtain the expected nodal precession for each TNO, yielding significantly more accurate free inclinations for non-resonant objects. For the vast majority (96\%) of classical belt TNOs, these $I_\text{free}$ values are conserved to $<1^\circ$ over 4 Gyr numerical simulations, demonstrating the advantage of using this well-conserved quantity in studies of the TNO population and its primordial inclination profile; our computed distributions only reinforce the idea of a very co-planar surviving 'cold' primordial population, overlain by a large $I$-width implanted 'hot' population., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS. Dynamically excited objects within the Kuiper belt show a bimodal distribution in their surface colors, and these differing surface colors may be a tracer of where these objects formed. In this work we explore radial color distributions in the primordial planetesimal disk and implications for the positions of ice line/color transitions within the Kuiper belt's progenitor populations. We combine a full dynamical model of the Kuiper belt's evolution due to Neptune's migration with precise surface colors measured by the Colours of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey in order to examine the true color ratios within the Kuiper belt and the ice lines within the primordial disk. We investigate the position of a dominant, surface color changing ice-line, with two possible surface color layouts within the initial disk; (1) inner neutral surfaces and outer red, and (2) inner red surfaces and outer neutral. We performed simulations with a primordial disk that truncates at 30 au. By radially stepping the color transition out through 0.5 au intervals we show that both disk configurations are consistent with the observed color fraction. For an inner neutral, outer red primordial disk we find that the color transition can be at $28^{+2}_{-3}$ au at a 95% confidence level. We present the discovery of 2013 VZ70, the first known horseshoe coorbital companion of Saturn. Observed by the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS) for 4.5 years, the orbit of 2013 VZ70 is determined to high precision, revealing that it currently is in `horseshoe' libration with the planet. This coorbital motion will last at least thousands of years but ends ~10 kyr from now; 2013 VZ70 is thus another example of the already-known `transient coorbital' populations of the giant planets, with this being the first known prograde example for Saturn (temporary retrograde coorbitals are known for Jupiter and Saturn). We present a theoretical steady state model of the scattering population of trans-Neptunian origin in the giant planet region (2--34 au), including the temporary coorbital populations of the four giant planets. We expose this model to observational biases using survey simulations in order to compare the model to the real detections made by a set of well-characterized outer Solar System surveys. While the observed number of coorbitals relative to the scattering population is higher than predicted, we show that the number of observed transient coorbitals of each giant planet relative to each other is consistent with a transneptunian source., Comment: 27 pages (double-line spaced manuscript format), 4 figures, 3 tables. The cold main classical Kuiper Belt consists of those non-resonant small solar system bodies with low orbital inclinations and orbital semi-major axes between 42.4 and 47.7 au. These objects likely formed \textit{in situ} and the population has experienced minimal collisional modification since formation. Using the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS) ensemble sample and characterization, combined with constraints from deeper surveys and supported by evidence from the Minor Planet Center catalog and the Deep Ecliptic Survey, we determine the absolute magnitude $H_r$ distribution of the cold classical belt from $H_r\simeq5$ to 12 (roughly diameters of 400 km to 20 km). We conclude that the cold population's $H_r$ distribution exhibits an exponential cutoff at large sizes. Exponential cutoffs at large sizes are not a natural outcome of pair-wise particle accretion but exponentially tapered power-law size distributions are a feature of numerical simulations of planetesimal formation via a streaming instability. Our observation of an exponential cutoff agrees with previous observational inferences that no large objects ($D \gtrsim 400$ km) exist in the cold population. We note that the asymptotic slope of the $H_r$ distribution is consistent with $\alpha \sim 0.4$ and this asymptotic slope is also found in streaming instability modelling of planetesimal formation and is thus not necessarily associated with achieving collisional equilibrium. Here, we present results on the intrinsic collision probabilities, $ P_I$, and range of collision speeds, $V_I$, as a function of the heliocentric distance, $r$, in the trans-Neptunian region. The collision speed is one of the parameters, that serves as a proxy to a collisional outcome e.g., complete disruption and scattering of fragments, or formation of crater, where both processes are directly related to the impact energy. We utilize an improved and de-biased model of the trans-Neptunian object (TNO) region from the "Outer Solar System Origins Survey" (OSSOS). It provides a well-defined orbital distribution model of TNOs, based on multiple opposition observations of more than 1000 bodies. In this work we compute collisional probabilities for the OSSOS models of the main classical, resonant, detached+outer and scattering TNO populations. The intrinsic collision probabilities and collision speeds are computed using the \"{O}pik's approach, as revised and modified by Wetherill for non-circular and inclined orbits. The calculations are carried out for each of the dynamical TNO groups, allowing for inter-population collisions as well as collisions within each TNO population, resulting in 28 combinations in total. Our results indicate that collisions in the trans-Neptunian region are possible over a wide range in ($r, V_I$) phase space. Although collisions are calculated to happen within $r\sim 20 - 200$~AU and $V_I \sim 0.1$~km/s to as high as $V_I\sim9$~km/s, most of the collisions are likely to happen at low relative velocities $V_I<1$~km/s and are dominated by the main classical belt., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

We present a GPU-accelerated numerical integrator specifically optimized for stability calculations of small bodies in planetary systems. Specifically, the integrator is designed for cases when large numbers of test particles (tens or hundreds of thousands) need to be followed for long durations (millions of orbits) to assess the orbital stability of their initially "close-encounter free" orbits. The GLISSE (Gpu Long-term Integrator for Solar System Evolution) code implements several optimizations to achieve a roughly factor of 100 speed increase over running the same code on a CPU. We explain how various hardware speed bottlenecks can be avoided by the careful code design, although some of the choices restrict the usage to specific types of application. As a first application, we study the long-term stability of small bodies initially on orbits between Uranus and Neptune. We map out in detail the small portion of the phase space in which small bodies can survive for 4.5 billion years of evolution; the ability to integrate large numbers of particles allow us to identify for the first time how instability-inducing mean-motion resonance overlaps sharply define the stable regions. As a second application, we map the boundaries of 4 Gyr stability or transneptunian objects in the 5:2 and 3:1 mean-motion resonances, demonstrating that long-term perturbations remove the initially stable Neptune-crossing members., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures

Previous work has demonstrated orbital stability for 100 Myr of initially near-circular and coplanar small bodies in a region termed the 'Earth-Mars belt' from 1.08 au $< a <$ 1.28 au. Via numerical integration of 3000 particles, we studied orbits from 1.04-1.30 au for the age of the Solar system. We show that on this time scale, except for a few locations where mean-motion resonances with Earth affect stability, only a narrower `Earth-Mars belt' covering $a\sim(1.09, 1.17)$ au, $e<0.04$, and $I<1^\circ$ has over half of the initial orbits survive for 4.5 Gyr. In addition to mean-motion resonances, we are able to see how the $\nu_3$, $\nu_4$, and $\nu_6$ secular resonances contribute to long-term instability in the outer (1.17-1.30 au) region on Gyr time scales. We show that all of the (rather small) near-Earth objects (NEOs) in or close to the Earth-Mars belt appear to be consistent with recently arrived transient objects by comparing to a NEO steady-state model. Given the $<200$ m scale of these NEOs, we estimated the Yarkovsky drift rates in semimajor axis, and use these to estimate that primordial asteroids with a diameter of 100 km or larger in the Earth-Mars belt would likely survive. We conclude that only a few 100-km sized asteroids could have been present in the belt's region at the end of the terrestrial planet formation., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. We have searched a 2010 archival data set from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope for very small (km-scale) irregular moons of Jupiter in order to constrain the size distribution of these moons down to radii of $\sim 400$~m, discovering 52 objects which are moving with Jupiter-like on-sky rates and are nearly certainly irregular moons. The four brightest detections, and seven in total, were all then linked to known jovian moons. Extrapolating our characterized detections (those down to magnitude $m_r=25.7$) to the entire retrograde circum-jovian population, we estimate the population of radius $>0.4$~km moons to be 600 (within a factor of 2). At the faintest magnitudes we find a relatively shallow luminosity function of exponential index $\alpha= 0.29 \pm 0.15$, corresponding to a differential diameter power law of index $q\simeq 2.5$.

We demonstrate dynamical pathways from main-belt asteroid and Centaur orbits to those in co-orbital motion with Jupiter, including the retrograde (inclination $i>90^o$) state. We estimate that at any given time, there should be $\sim1$ kilometer-scale or larger escaped asteroid in a transient direct (prograde) orbit with semimajor axis near that of Jupiter's ($a\simeq a_J$), with proportionally more smaller objects as determined by their size distribution. Most of these objects would be in the horseshoe dynamical state, which are hard to detect due to their moderate eccentricities (spending most of their time beyond 5 AU) and longitudes relative to Jupiter being spread nearly all over the sky. We also show that $\approx$1% of the transient asteroid co-orbital population is on retrograde orbits with Jupiter. This population, like the recently identified asteroid (514107) 2015 BZ$_{509}$, can spend millions of years with $a\simeq a_J$ including tens or hundreds of thousands of years formally in the retrograde 1:-1 co-orbital resonance. Escaping near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) are thus likely the precursors to the handful of known high-inclination objects with $a\simeq a_J$. We compare the production of jovian co-orbitals from escaping NEAs with those from incoming Centaurs. We find that temporary direct co-orbitals are likely dominated by Centaur capture, but we only find production of (temporary) retrograde jovian co-orbitals (including very long-lived ones) from the NEA source. We postulate that the primordial elimination of the inner Solar System's planetesimal population could provide a supply route for a metastable outer Solar System reservoir for the high-inclination Centaurs., Comment: Accepted at AJ

The minor planets on orbits that are dynamically stable in Neptune's 1:1 resonance on Gyr timescales were likely emplaced by Neptune's outward migration. We explore the intrinsic libration amplitude, eccentricity, and inclination distribution of Neptune's stable Trojans, using the detections and survey efficiency of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS) and Pan-STARRS1. We find that the libration amplitude of the stable Neptunian Trojan population can be well modeled as a Rayleigh distribution with a libration amplitude width $\sigma_{A_phi}$ of 15$^\circ$. When taken as a whole, the Neptune Trojan population can be acceptably modeled with a Rayleigh eccentricity distribution of width $\sigma_e$ of 0.045 and a typical sin(i) x Gaussian inclination distribution with a width $\sigma_i$ of 14 +/- 2 degrees. However, these distributions are only marginally acceptable. This is likely because, even after accounting for survey detection biases, the known large Hr < 8 and small Hr >= 8 Neptune Trojans appear to have markedly different eccentricities and inclinations. We propose that like the classical Kuiper belt, the stable intrinsic Neptunian Trojan population have dynamically `hot' and dynamically `cold' components to its eccentricity/inclination distribution, with $\sigma_{e-cold}$ ~ 0.02 / $\sigma_{i-cold}$ ~ 6$^\circ$ and $\sigma_{e-hot}$~ 0.05 / $\sigma_{i-hot}$ ~ 18$^\circ$. In this scenario, the `cold' L4 Neptunian Trojan population lacks the Hr >= 8 members and has 13 +11/-6 `cold' Trojans with Hr < 8. On the other hand, the `hot' L4 Neptunian Trojan population has 136 +57/-48 Trojans with Hr < 10 -- a population 2.4 times greater than that of the L4 Jovian Trojans in the same luminosity range., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, v3, accepted for publication in Icarus

The surface characterization of Trans-Neptunian Binaries (TNBs) is key to understanding the properties of the disk of planetesimals from which these objects formed. In the optical wavelengths, it has been demonstrated that most equal-sized component systems share similar colors, suggesting they have a similar composition. The color homogeneity of binary pairs contrasts with the overall diversity of colors in the Kuiper belt, which was interpreted as evidence that Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) formed from a locally homogeneous and globally heterogeneous protoplanetary disk. In this paradigm, binary pairs must have formed early, before the dynamically hot TNOs were scattered out from their formation location. The latter inferences, however, relied on the assumption that the matching colors of the binary components imply matching composition. Here, we test this assumption by examining the component-resolved photometry of three TNBs found in the Outer Solar System Origins Survey: 505447 (2013 SQ99), 511551 (2014 UD225) and 506121 (2016 BP81), across the visible and J-band near-infrared wavelength range. We report similar colors within 2 sigma for the binary pairs suggestive of similar reflectance spectra and hence surface composition. This advocates for gravitational collapse of pebble clouds as a possible TNO formation route. We however stress that several similarly small TNOs, including at least one binary, have been shown to exhibit substantial spectral variability in the near-infrared, implying color equality of binary pairs is likely to be violated in some cases., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted to The Planetary Science Journal

Resonant dynamics plays a significant role in the past evolution and current state of our outer Solar System. The population ratios and spatial distribution of Neptune's resonant populations are direct clues to understanding the history of our planetary system. The orbital structure of the objects in Neptune's 2:1 mean-motion resonance (\emph{twotinos}) has the potential to be a tracer of planetary migration processes. Different migration processes produce distinct architectures, recognizable by well-characterized surveys. However, previous characterized surveys only discovered a few twotinos, making it impossible to model the intrinsic twotino population. With a well-designed cadence and nearly 100\% tracking success, the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS) discovered 838 trans-Neptunian objects, of which 34 are securely twotinos with well-constrained libration angles and amplitudes. We use the OSSOS twotinos and the survey characterization parameters via the OSSOS Survey Simulator to inspect the intrinsic population and orbital distributions of twotino. The estimated twotino population, 4400$^{+1500}_{-1100}$ with $H_r<8.66$ (diameter$\sim$100km) at 95\% confidence, is consistent with the previous low-precision estimate. We also constrain the width of the inclination distribution to a relatively narrow value of $\sigma_i$=6$^\circ$$^{+1}_{-1}$, and find the eccentricity distribution is consistent with a Gaussian centered on $e_\mathrm{c}=0.275$ with a width $e_\mathrm{w}=0.06$. We find a single-slope exponential luminosity function with $\alpha=0.6$ for the twotinos. Finally, we for the first time meaningfully constrain the fraction of symmetric twotinos, and the ratio of the leading asymmetric islands; both fractions are in a range of 0.2--0.6. In this white paper (WP), we highlight several examples of small and moderate aperture telescopes that are being used for education and/or research. We further discuss potential costs for establishing new, small observatories, as well as joining existing international consortia. The WP includes a brief overview of select observing sites, with a discussion on how small telescopes at exceptional observing locations can be competitive, under certain circumstances, with larger and more expensive facilities located at poorer sites. In addition to research, these facilities enable many different types of educational experiences for wide range of people, from high school students to undergraduates to graduate students to postdocs. Canada should remain committed to partnering with large, international observatories such as CFHT, Gemini, and TMT, but it should also negotiate international agreements and commit funding to expand the use of small and moderate research observatories at domestic and international sites through coordination with the NRC, the Tri-Council, and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. Both capital and operational costs (with site rental costs allowed) need to be included in support possibilities. CASCA should establish and maintain a small to moderate telescope expression of interest database that would help to facilitate Canadian institutions in organizing consortia, particularly for smaller institutions. The astronomical community should work with the NRC to make existing facilities more accessible to the astronomical community for research. This could involve, for example, automating the Plaskett and/or providing travel funds for supporting classical observing modes. [Highly abridged, from executive summary] As much as NewSpace presents opportunities, there are significant challenges that must be overcome, requiring engagement with policy makers to influence domestic and international space governance. Failure to do so could result in a range of long-lasting negative outcomes for science and space stewardship. How will the Canadian astronomical community engage with NewSpace? What are the implications for NewSpace on the astro-environment, including Earth orbits, lunar and cis-lunar orbits, and surfaces of celestial bodies? This white paper analyzes the rapid changes in space use and what those changes could mean for Canadian astronomers. Our recommendations are as follows: Greater cooperation between the astronomical and the Space Situational Awareness communities is needed. Build closer ties between the astronomical community and Global Affairs Canada (GAC). Establish a committee for evaluating the astro-environmental impacts of human space use, including on and around the Moon and other bodies. CASCA and the Tri-Council should coordinate to identify programs that would enable Canadian astronomers to participate in pay-for-use services at appropriate funding levels. CASCA should continue to foster a relationship with CSA, but also build close ties to the private space industry. While collisional families are common in the asteroid belt, only one is known in the Kuiper belt, linked to the dwarf planet Haumea. The characterization of Haumea's family helps to constrain its origin and, more generally, the collisional history of the Kuiper belt. However, the size distribution of the Haumea family is difficult to constrain from the known sample, which is affected by discovery biases. Here, we use the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS) Ensemble to look for Haumea family members. In this OSSOS XVI study we report the detection of three candidates with small ejection velocities relative to the family formation centre. The largest discovery, 2013 UQ15, is conclusively a Haumea family member, with a low ejection velocity and neutral surface colours. Although the OSSOS Ensemble is sensitive to Haumea family members to a limiting absolute magnitude (Hr) of 9.5 (inferred diameter of ~90 km), the smallest candidate is significantly larger, Hr = 7.9. The Haumea family members larger than approximately 20 km in diameter must be characterized by a shallow H-distribution slope in order to produce only these three large detections. We use published models of the early Solar System evolution with a slow, long-range and grainy migration of Neptune to predict the orbital element distributions and the number of modern-day Centaurs. The model distributions are biased by the OSSOS survey simulator and compared with the OSSOS Centaur detections. We find an excellent match to the observed orbital distribution, including the wide range of orbital inclinations which was the most troublesome characteristic to fit in previous models. A dynamical model, in which the original population of outer disk planetesimals was calibrated from Jupiter Trojans, is used to predict that OSSOS should detect 11+/-4 Centaurs with semimajor axis a<30 au, perihelion distance q>7.5 au and diameter D>10 km (absolute magnitude H_r<13.7 for a 6% albedo). This is consistent with 15 actual OSSOS Centaur detections with H_r<13.7. The population of Centaurs is estimated to be 21,000+/-8,000 for D>10 km. The inner scattered disk at 5010 km bodies and the Oort cloud should contain (5.0+/-1.9)x10^8 D>10 km comets. Most known trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) gravitationally scattering off the giant planets have orbital inclinations consistent with an origin from the classical Kuiper belt, but a small fraction of these "scattering TNOs" have inclinations that are far too large (i > 45 deg) for this origin. These scattering outliers have previously been proposed to be interlopers from the Oort cloud or evidence of an undiscovered planet. Here we test these hypotheses using N-body simulations and the 69 centaurs and scattering TNOs detected in the Outer Solar Systems Origins Survey and its predecessors. We confirm that observed scattering objects cannot solely originate from the classical Kuiper belt, and we show that both the Oort cloud and a distant planet generate observable highly inclined scatterers. Although the number of highly inclined scatterers from the Oort Cloud is ~3 times less than observed, Oort cloud enrichment from the Sun's galactic migration or birth cluster could resolve this. Meanwhile, a distant, low-eccentricity 5 Earth-mass planet replicates the observed fraction of highly inclined scatterers, but the overall inclination distribution is more excited than observed. Furthermore, the distant planet generates a longitudinal asymmetry among detached TNOs that is less extreme than often presumed, and its direction reverses across the perihelion range spanned by known TNOs. More complete models that explore the dynamical origins of the planet are necessary to further study these features. In preparation for the Jan 1/2019 encounter between the New Horizons spacecraft and the Kuiper Belt object 2014 MU69, we provide estimates of the expected impact crater surface density on the Kuiper Belt object. Using the observed crater fields on Charon and Pluto down to the resolution limit of the 2015 New Horizons flyby of those bodies and estimates of the orbital distribution of the crater-forming projectiles, we calculate the number of craters per unit area formed as a function of the time a surface on 2014 MU69 has been exposed to bombardment. We find that if the shallow crater-size distribution from 1-15 km exhibited on Pluto and Charon is indeed due to the sizes of Kuiper Belt projectiles, 2014 MU69 should exhibit a surface that is only lightly cratered below 1 km scale, despite being bombarded for $\sim4$~billion years. Its surface should therefore be more clearly indicative of its accretionary environment. In addition, this object may the first observed for which the majority of the bombardment is from exogenic projectiles moving less than or near the speed of sound in the target materials, implying morphologies more akin to secondary craters elsewhere in the Solar System. Lastly, if the shallow Kuiper Belt size distribution implied from the Pluto and Charon imaging is confirmed at MU69, then we conclude that this size distribution is a preserved relic of its state $\simeq$4.5~Gyr ago and provides a direct constraint on the planetesimal formation process itself., Comment: V2. We present variability measurements and partial light curves of Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) from a two-night pilot study using Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) on the Subaru Telescope (Maunakea, Hawai'i, USA). Subaru's large aperture (8-m) and HSC's large field of view (1.77 square degrees) allow us to obtain measurements of multiple objects with a range of magnitudes in each telescope pointing. We observed 65 objects with m_r = 22.6--25.5 mag in just six pointings, allowing 20--24 visits of each pointing over the two nights. Our sample, all discovered in the recent Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS), span absolute magnitudes H_r = 6.2--10.8 mag and thus investigates smaller objects than previous light curve projects have typically studied. Our data supports the existence of a correlation between light curve amplitude and absolute magnitude seen in other works, but does not support a correlation between amplitude and orbital inclination. Our sample includes a number of objects from different dynamical populations within the trans-Neptunian region, but we do not find any relationship between variability and dynamical class. We were only able to estimate periods for 12 objects in the sample and found that a longer baseline of observations is required for reliable period analysis. We find that 31 objects (just under half of our sample) have variability greater than 0.4 magnitudes during all of the observations; in smaller 1.25 hr, 1.85 hr and 2.45 hr windows, the median variability is 0.13, 0.16 and 0.19 mags, respectively. The fact that variability on this scale is common for small TNOs has important implications for discovery surveys (such as OSSOS or the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope) and color measurements., Comment: 49 pages, 14 figures, 7 tables

Both physical and dynamical properties must be considered to constrain the origins of the dynamically excited distant Solar System populations. We present high-precision (g-r) colors for 25 small (Hr>5) dynamically excited Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) and centaurs acquired as part of the Colours of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (Col-OSSOS). We combine our dataset with previously published measurements and consider a set of 229 colors of outer Solar System objects on dynamically excited orbits. The overall color distribution is bimodal and can be decomposed into two distinct classes, termed `gray' and `red', that each has a normal color distribution. The two color classes have different inclination distributions: red objects have lower inclinations than the gray ones. This trend holds for all dynamically excited TNO populations. Even in the worst-case scenario, biases in the discovery surveys cannot account for this trend: it is intrinsic to the TNO population. Considering that TNOs are the precursors of centaurs, and that their inclinations are roughly preserved as they become centaurs, our finding solves the conundrum of centaurs being the only outer Solar System population identified so far to exhibit this property (Tegler et al. 2016). The Colours of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (Col-OSSOS) is acquiring near-simultaneous $g$, $r$, and $J$ photometry of unprecedented precision with the Gemini North Telescope, targeting nearly a hundred trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) brighter than $m_r=23.6$ mag discovered in the Outer Solar System Origins Survey. Combining the optical and near-infrared photometry with the well-characterized detection efficiency of the Col-OSSOS target sample will provide the first flux-limited compositional dynamical map of the outer Solar System. In this paper, we describe our observing strategy and detail the data reduction processes we employ, including techniques to mitigate the impact of rotational variability. We present optical and near-infrared colors for 35 TNOs. We find two taxonomic groups for the dynamically excited TNOs, the neutral and red classes, which divide at $g-r \simeq 0.75$. Based on simple albedo and orbital distribution assumptions, we find that the neutral class outnumbers the red class, with a ratio of 4:1 and potentially as high as 11:1. Including in our analysis constraints from the cold classical objects, which are known to exhibit unique albedos and $r-z$ colors, we find that within our measurement uncertainty, our observations are consistent with the primordial Solar System protoplanetesimal disk being neutral-class-dominated, with two major compositional divisions in $grJ$ color space., Comment: Accepted to ApJS; on-line supplemental files will be available with the AJS published version of the paper

The Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS), a wide-field imaging program in 2013-2017 with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, surveyed 155 deg$^{2}$ of sky to depths of $m_r = 24.1$-25.2. We present 838 outer Solar System discoveries that are entirely free of ephemeris bias. This increases the inventory of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) with accurately known orbits by nearly 50%. Each minor planet has 20-60 Gaia/Pan-STARRS-calibrated astrometric measurements made over 2-5 oppositions, which allows accurate classification of their orbits within the trans-Neptunian dynamical populations. The populations orbiting in mean-motion resonance with Neptune are key to understanding Neptune's early migration. Our 313 resonant TNOs, including 132 plutinos, triple the available characterized sample and include new occupancy of distant resonances out to semi-major axis $a \sim 130$ au. OSSOS doubles the known population of the non-resonant Kuiper belt, providing 436 TNOs in this region, all with exceptionally high-quality orbits of $a$ uncertainty $\sigma_{a} \leq 0.1\%$; they show the belt exists from $a \gtrsim 37$ au, with a lower perihelion bound of $35$ au. We confirm the presence of a concentrated low-inclination $a\simeq 44$ au "kernel" population and a dynamically cold population extending beyond the 2:1 resonance. We finely quantify the survey's observational biases. Our survey simulator provides a straightforward way to impose these biases on models of the trans-Neptunian orbit distributions, allowing statistical comparison to the discoveries. We discuss the detection in the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS) of two objects in Neptune's distant 9:1 mean motion resonance at semimajor axis $a\approx~130$~au. Both objects are securely resonant on 10~Myr timescales, with one securely in the 9:1 resonance's leading asymmetric libration island and the other in either the symmetric or trailing asymmetric island. These objects are the largest semimajor axis objects with secure resonant classifications, and their detection in a carefully characterized survey allows for the first robust resonance population estimate beyond 100~au. The detection of these objects implies a 9:1 resonance population of $1.1\times10^4$ objects with $H_r<8.66$ ($D~\gtrsim~100$~km) on similar orbits (95\% confidence range of $\sim0.4-3\times10^4$). Integrations over 4~Gyr of an ensemble of clones spanning these objects' orbit fit uncertainties reveal that they both have median resonance occupation timescales of $\sim1$~Gyr. These timescales are consistent with the hypothesis that these objects originate in the scattering population but became transiently stuck to Neptune's 9:1 resonance within the last $\sim1$~Gyr of solar system evolution. Based on simulations of a model of the current scattering population, we estimate the expected resonance sticking population in the 9:1 resonance to be 1000-4500 objects with $H_r<8.66$; this is marginally consistent with the OSSOS 9:1 population estimate. We conclude that resonance sticking is a plausible explanation for the observed 9:1 population, but we also discuss the possibility of a primordial 9:1 population, which would have interesting implications for the Kuiper belt's dynamical history., Comment: accepted for publication in AJ

Several different classes of trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) have been identified based on their optical and near-infrared colors. As part of the Colours of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey, we have obtained $g$, $r$, and $z$ band photometry of 26 TNOs using Subaru and Gemini Observatories. Previous color surveys have not utilized $z$ band reflectance, and the inclusion of this band reveals significant surface reflectance variations between sub-populations. The colors of TNOs in $g-r$ and $r-z$ show obvious structure, and appear consistent with the previously measured bi-modality in $g-r$. The distribution of colors of the two dynamically excited surface types can be modeled using the two-component mixing models from Fraser \& Brown (2012). With the combination of $g-r$ and $r-z$, the dynamically excited classes can be separated cleanly into red and neutral surface classes. In $g - r$ and $r - z$, the two dynamically excited surface groups are also clearly distinct from the cold classical TNO surfaces, which are red, with $g-r\gtrsim$0.85 and $r-z\lesssim$0.6, while all dynamically excited objects with similar $g-r$ colors exhibit redder $r-z$ colors. The $z$ band photometry makes it possible for the first time to differentiate the red excited TNO surfaces from the red cold classical TNO surfaces. The discovery of different $r-z$ colors for these cold classical TNOs makes it possible to search for cold classical surfaces in other regions of the Kuiper belt and to completely separate cold classical TNOs from the dynamically excited population, which overlaps in orbital parameter space., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, Accepted to AJ

The accumulating, but small, set of large semi-major axis trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) shows an apparent clustering in the orientations of their orbits. This clustering must either be representative of the intrinsic distribution of these TNOs, or else arise as a result of observation biases and/or statistically expected variations for such a small set of detected objects. The clustered TNOs were detected across different and independent surveys, which has led to claims that the detections are therefore free of observational bias. This apparent clustering has led to the so-called "Planet 9" hypothesis that a super-Earth currently resides in the distant solar system and causes this clustering. The Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS) is a large program that ran on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope from 2013--2017, discovering more than 800 new TNOs. One of the primary design goals of OSSOS was the careful determination of observational biases that would manifest within the detected sample. We demonstrate the striking and non-intuitive biases that exist for the detection of TNOs with large semi-major axes. The eight large semi-major axis OSSOS detections are an independent dataset, of comparable size to the conglomerate samples used in previous studies. The cold classical Kuiper belt objects have low inclinations and eccentricities and are the only Kuiper belt population suspected to have formed in situ. Compared with the dynamically excited populations, which exhibit a broad range of colours and a low binary fraction of ~10% cold classical Kuiper belt objects typically have red optical colours with ~30% of the population found in binary pairs; the origin of these differences remains unclear. We report the detection of a population of blue-coloured, tenuously bound binaries residing among the cold classical Kuiper belt objects. Here we show that widely separated binaries could have survived push-out into the cold classical region during the early phases of Neptune's migration. The blue binaries may be contaminants, originating at ~38 au, and could provide a unique probe of the formative conditions in a region now nearly devoid of objects. The idea that the blue objects, which are predominantly binary, are the products of push-out requires that the planetesimals formed entirely as multiples. We report the discovery of the minor planet 2013 SY$_{99}$, on an exceptionally distant, highly eccentric orbit. With a perihelion of 50.0 au, 2013 SY$_{99}$'s orbit has a semi-major axis of $730 \pm 40$ au, the largest known for a high-perihelion trans-Neptunian object (TNO), well beyond those of (90377) Sedna and 2012 VP$_{113}$. Yet, with an aphelion of $1420 \pm 90$ au, 2013 SY$_{99}$'s orbit is interior to the region influenced by Galactic tides. Such TNOs are not thought to be produced in the current known planetary architecture of the Solar System, and they have informed the recent debate on the existence of a distant giant planet. Photometry from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Gemini North and Subaru indicate 2013 SY$_{99}$ is $\sim 250$ km in diameter and moderately red in colour, similar to other dynamically excited TNOs. Our dynamical simulations show that Neptune's weak influence during 2013 SY$_{99}$'s perihelia encounters drives diffusion in its semi-major axis of hundreds of astronomical units over 4 Gyr. The overall symmetry of random walks in semi-major axis allow diffusion to populate 2013 SY$_{99}$'s orbital parameter space from the 1000-2000 au inner fringe of the Oort cloud. Diffusion affects other known TNOs on orbits with perihelia of 45 to 49 au and semi-major axes beyond 250 au, providing a formation mechanism that implies an extended population, gently cycling into and returning from the inner fringe of the Oort cloud., Comment: First reviewer report comments incorporated. We present deep imaging observations, orbital dynamics, and dust tail model analyses of the double-component asteroid P/2016 J1 (J1-A and J1-B). The observations were acquired at the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) from mid March to late July, 2016. A statistical analysis of backward-in-time integrations of the orbits of a large sample of clone objects of P/2016 J1-A and J1-B shows that the minimum separation between them occurred most likely $\sim$2300 days prior to the current perihelion passage, i.e., during the previous orbit near perihelion. This closest approach was probably linked to a fragmentation event of their parent body. Monte Carlo dust tail models show that those two components became active simultaneously $\sim$250 days before the current perihelion, with comparable maximum loss rates of $\sim$0.7 kg s$^{-1}$ and $\sim$0.5 kg s$^{-1}$, and total ejected masses of 8$\times$10$^{6}$ kg and 6$\times$10$^{6}$ kg for fragments J1-A and J1-B, respectively. In consequence, the fragmentation event and the present dust activity are unrelated. We report the discovery and orbit of a new dwarf planet candidate, 2015 RR$_{245}$, by the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS). 2015 RR$_{245}$'s orbit is eccentric ($e=0.586$), with a semi-major axis near 82 au, yielding a perihelion distance of 34 au. 2015 RR$_{245}$ has $g-r = 0.59 \pm 0.11$ and absolute magnitude $H_{r} = 3.6 \pm 0.1$; for an assumed albedo of $p_V = 12$% the object has a diameter of $\sim670$ km. Based on astrometric measurements from OSSOS and Pan-STARRS1, we find that 2015 RR$_{245}$ is securely trapped on ten-Myr timescales in the 9:2 mean-motion resonance with Neptune. It is the first TNO identified in this resonance. On hundred-Myr timescales, particles in 2015 RR$_{245}$-like orbits depart and sometimes return to the resonance, indicating that 2015 RR$_{245}$ likely forms part of the long-lived metastable population of distant TNOs that drift between resonance sticking and actively scattering via gravitational encounters with Neptune. The discovery of a 9:2 TNO stresses the role of resonances in the long-term evolution of objects in the scattering disk, and reinforces the view that distant resonances are heavily populated in the current Solar System. The first two observational sky "blocks" of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS) have significantly increased the number of well-characterized observed trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) in Neptune's mean motion resonances. We describe the 31 securely resonant TNOs detected by OSSOS so far, and we use them to independently verify the resonant population models from the Canada-France Ecliptic Plane Survey (CFEPS; Gladman et al. 2012), with which we find broad agreement. We confirm that the 5:2 resonance is more populated than models of the outer Solar System's dynamical history predict; our minimum population estimate shows that the high eccentricity (e>0.35) portion of the resonance is at least as populous as the 2:1 and possibly as populated as the 3:2 resonance. One OSSOS block was well-suited to detecting objects trapped at low libration amplitudes in Neptune's 3:2 resonance, a population of interest in testing the origins of resonant TNOs. We detected three 3:2 objects with libration amplitudes below the cutoff modeled by CFEPS; OSSOS thus offers new constraints on this distribution. The OSSOS detections confirm that the 2:1 resonance has a dynamically colder inclination distribution than either the 3:2 or 5:2 resonances. Using the combined OSSOS and CFEPS 2:1 detections, we constrain the fraction of 2:1 objects in the symmetric mode of libration to be 0.2-0.85; we also constrain the fraction of leading vs. trailing asymmetric librators, which has been theoretically predicted to vary depending on Neptune's migration history, to be 0.05-0.8. We report the discovery, tracking and detection circumstances for 85 trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) from the first 42 deg$^{2}$ of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS). This ongoing $r$-band Solar System survey uses the 0.9 deg$^{2}$ field-of-view MegaPrime camera on the 3.6 m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Our orbital elements for these TNOs are precise to a fractional semi-major axis uncertainty $<0.1\%$. We achieve this precision in just two oppositions, as compared to the normal 3-5 oppositions, via a dense observing cadence and innovative astrometric technique. These discoveries are free of ephemeris bias, a first for large trans-Neptunian surveys. We also provide the necessary information to enable models of TNO orbital distributions to be tested against our TNO sample. We confirm the existence of a cold "kernel" of objects within the main cold classical Kuiper belt, and infer the existence of an extension of the "stirred" cold classical Kuiper belt to at least several AU beyond the 2:1 mean motion resonance with Neptune. We find that the population model of Petit et al. (2011) remains a plausible representation of the Kuiper belt. The Kepler mission results indicate that systems of tightly-packed inner planets (STIPs) are present around of order 5% of FGK field stars (whose median age is ~5 Gyr). We propose that STIPs initially surrounded nearly all such stars and those observed are the final survivors of a process in which long-term metastability eventually ceases and the systems proceed to collisional consolidation or destruction, losing roughly equal fractions of systems every decade in time. In this context, we also propose that our Solar System initially contained additional large planets interior to the current orbit of Venus, which survived in a metastable dynamical configuration for 1-10% of the Solar System's age. Long-term gravitational perturbations caused the system to orbit cross, leading to a cataclysmic event which left Mercury as the sole surviving relic., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

The Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) may preserve evidence of planet building in their orbital and size-distributions. While all populations show steep size-distributions for large objects, recently relative deficit of Neptunian Trojans and scattering objects with diameters $D<100\,\mathrm{km}$ were detected. We have investigated this deficit with a 32 square degree survey, detecting 77 TNOs to a limiting $r$-band magnitude of 24.6. Our Plutinos sample (18 objects in 3:2 mean motion resonance with Neptune) also shows a deficit of $D<100\,\mathrm{km}$ objects. We reject a single power-law size-distribution and find that the Plutinos favour a divot. The Plutinos are thus added the list of populations with a deficit of $D<100\,\mathrm{km}$ objects. The fact that three independent samples of three different populations show this trend suggests that it is a real feature, possibly shared by all hot TNO populations as a remnant of "born big" planetesimal formation processes. We surmise the existence of $9000\pm3000$ Plutinos with $H_r\leq8.66$ and $37000^{+12000}_{-10000}$ Plutinos with $H_r\leq10.0$. Our survey also discovered one temporary Uranian Trojan, one temporary Neptunian Trojans and one stable Neptunian Trojan, from which we derive populations of $110^{+500}_{-100}$, $210^{+900}_{-200}$ and $150^{+600}_{-140}$ , respectively, with $H_r\leq10.0$. The Neptunian Trojans are thus less numerous than the main belt asteroids, which has over 700 asteroids with $H_r\leq10.0$. With such numbers, the temporary Neptunian Trojans cannot be previously stable Trojans that happen to be escaping the resonance now; they must be captured from another reservoir. The Hungaria asteroids are interior to the main asteroid belt, with semimajor axes between 1.8 and 2 AU, low eccentricities and inclinations of 16-35 degrees. Small asteroids in the Hungaria region are dominated by a collisional family associated with (434) Hungaria. The dominant spectral type of the Hungaria group is the E or X-type (Warner et al, 2009), mostly due to the E-type composition of Hungaria and its genetic family. It is widely believed the E-type asteroids are related to the aubrite meteorites, also known as enstatite achondrites (Gaffey et al, 1992). Here we explore the hypothesis that aubrites originate in the Hungaria family. In order to test this connection, we compare model Cosmic Ray Exposure ages from orbital integrations of model meteoroids with those of aubrites. We show that long CRE ages of aubrites (longest among stony meteorite groups) reflect the delivery route of meteoroids from Hungarias to Earth being different than those from main-belt asteroids. We find that the meteoroids from Hungarias predominantly reach Earth by Yarkovsky-drifting across the orbit of Mars, with no assistance from orbital resonances. We conclude that the CRE ages of aubrites are fully consistent with a dominant source at the inner boundary of the Hungaria family at 1.7 AU. From here, meteoroids reach Earth through the Mars-crossing region, with relatively quick delivery times favored due to collisions (with Hungarias and the inner main-belt objects). Trojan objects share a planet's orbit, never straying far from the triangular Lagrangian points, 60 degrees ahead of (L4) or behind (L5) the planet. We report the detection of a Uranian Trojan; in our numerical integrations, 2011 QF99 oscillates around the Uranian L4 Lagrange point for >70 kyr and remains co-orbital for ~1 Myr before becoming a Centaur. We constructed a Centaur model, supplied from the transneptunian region, to estimate temporary co-orbital capture frequency and duration (to factor of two accuracy), finding that at any time 0.4% and 2.8% of the population will be Uranian and Neptunian co-orbitals, respectively. The GJ 581 system has been amply studied since its discovery in 2005: the number of known planets in the system has increased and their orbital parameters are among the most precisely determined for radial velocity detected exoplanets. We have acquired MOST space-based photometry during 2007 and 2009, with the aims of measuring the stellar variability and searching for transits of GJ 581e, respectively. We quantify our sensitivity to shallow transit signals using Monte Carlo simulations, and perform a transit search within the 3$\sigma$ transit windows corresponding to both the circular and Keplerian orbit ephemerides. Our analysis rules out transits for a planet with an orbital period of 3.15 days (GJ 581 e) having a radius larger than 1.62 $R_{\oplus}$ (or a density lower than 2.39 g cm$^{-3}$ for an orbital inclination of 90$^{\circ}$) to 2$\sigma$ confidence. Thus, if the planet transits, we can exclude hydrogen, helium and water theoretical model compositions. The MOST photometry also allows us to rule out transits of GJ 581b within the Keplerian orbit-derived transit window for impact parameter values smaller than $\sim$0.4 and confirm previous results which exclude transits for this planet within the circular orbit-derived transit window, for all plausible interior compositions. We find that the stellar brightness of GJ 581 is stable to within 1%, a characteristic which is favourable to the development of life in the habitable zone of the system. In the 2009 photometry, we detect a stellar signal with a period of 5.586 $\pm$ 0.051 days, which is close to the orbital period of GJ 581b ($P=$5.37 days). We report the orbital distribution of the trans-neptunian objects (TNOs) discovered during the Canada-France Ecliptic Plane Survey, whose discovery phase ran from early 2003 until early 2007. The follow-up observations started just after the first discoveries and extended until late 2009. We obtained characterized observations of 321 sq.deg. of sky to depths in the range g ~ 23.5--24.4 AB mag. We provide a database of 169 TNOs with high-precision dynamical classification and known discovery efficiency. Using this database, we find that the classical belt is a complex region with sub-structures that go beyond the usual splitting of inner (interior to 3:2 mean-motion resonance [MMR]), outer (exterior to 2:1 MMR), and main (in between). The main classical belt (a=40--47 AU) needs to be modeled with at least three components: the `hot' component with a wide inclination distribution and two `cold' components (stirred and kernel) with much narrower inclination distributions. The hot component must have a significantly shallower absolute magnitude (Hg) distribution than the other two components. With 95% confidence, there are 8000+1800-1600 objects in the main belt with Hg <= 8.0, of which 50% are from the hot component, 40% from the stirred component and 10% from the kernel; the hot component's fraction drops rapidly with increasing Hg. Because of this, the apparent population fractions depend on the depth and ecliptic latitude of a trans-neptunian survey. The stirred and kernel components are limited to only a portion of the main belt, while we find that the hot component is consistent with a smooth extension throughout the inner, main and outer regions of the classical belt; the inner and outer belts are consistent with containing only hot-component objects. The low-inclination component of the Classical Kuiper Belt is host to a population of extremely widely-separated binaries. These systems are similar to other Trans-Neptunian binaries (TNBs) in that the primary and secondary components of each system are of roughly equal size. We have performed an astrometric monitoring campaign of a sample of seven wide-separation, long-period TNBs and present the first-ever well-characterized mutual orbits for each system. The sample contains the most eccentric (2006 CH69, e=0.9) and the most widely-separated, weakly bound (2001 QW322, a/Rh~0.22) binary minor planets known, and also contains the system with lowest-measured mass of any TNB (2000 CF105, M~1.85E17 kg). Four systems orbit in a prograde sense, and three in a retrograde sense. They have a different mutual inclination distribution compared to all other TNBs, preferring low mutual-inclination orbits. These systems have geometric r-band albedos in the range of 0.09-0.3, consistent with radiometric albedo estimates for larger solitary low-inclination Classical Kuiper Belt objects, and we limit the plausible distribution of albedos in this region of the Kuiper Belt. We find that gravitational collapse binary formation models produce a similar orbital distribution to that currently observed, which along with a confluence of other factors supports formation of the cold Classical Kuiper Belt in situ through relatively rapid gravitational collapse rather than slow hierarchical accretion. We have searched Microvariability and Oscillations of STars (MOST) satellite photometry obtained in 2004, 2005, and 2007 of the solar-type star HD 209458 for Trojan asteroid swarms dynamically coupled with the system's transiting "hot Jupiter" HD 209458b. Observations of the presence and nature of asteroids around other stars would provide unique constraints on migration models of exoplanetary systems. Our results set an upper limit on the optical depth of Trojans in the HD 209458 system that can be used to guide current and future searches of similar systems by upcoming missions. Using cross-correlation methods with artificial signals implanted in the data, we find that our detection limit corresponds to a relative Trojan transit depth of 1\times10-4, equivalent to ~1 lunar mass of asteroids, assuming power-law Trojan size distributions similar to Jupiter's Trojans in our solar system. We confirm with dynamical interpretations that some asteroids could have migrated inward with the planet to its current orbit at 0.045 AU, and that the Yarkovsky effect is ineffective at eliminating objects of > 1 m in size. However, using numerical models of collisional evolution we find that, due to high relative speeds in this confined Trojan environment, collisions destroy the vast majority of the asteroids in <10 Myr. Our modeling indicates that the best candidates to search for exoTrojan swarms in 1:1 mean resonance orbits with "hot Jupiters" are young systems (ages of about 1 Myr or less). Years of Kepler satellite monitoring of such a system could detect an asteroid swarm with a predicted transit depth of 3\times10-7., Comment: 32 pages, 8 figures
