The butterfly diagram of the solar cycle exhibits a poleward migration of the diffuse magnetic field resulting from the decay of trailing sunspots. It is one component of what is sometimes referred to as the "rush to the poles". We investigate under which conditions the rush to the poles can be reproduced in flux-transport Babcock-Leighton dynamo models. We identify three main ways to reproduce it: a flux emergence probability that decreases rapidly with latitude; a threshold in subsurface toroidal field strength between slow and fast emergence; and an emergence rate based on magnetic buoyancy. We find that all three mechanisms lead to solar-like butterfly diagrams, but which present notable differences between them. The shape of the butterfly diagram is very sensitive to model parameters for the threshold prescription, while most models incorporating magnetic buoyancy converge to very similar butterfly diagrams, with butterfly wings widths of $\lesssim\pm 30^\circ$, in very good agreement with observations. With turbulent diffusivities above $35~\text{km}^2/\text{s}$ but below about $40~\text{km}^2/\text{s}$, buoyancy models are strikingly solar-like. The threshold and magnetic buoyancy prescriptions make the models non-linear and as such can saturate the dynamo through latitudinal quenching. The period of the models involving buoyancy is independent of the source term amplitude, but emergence loss increases it by $\simeq 60\%$. For the rush to the poles to be visible, a mechanism suppressing (enhancing) emergences at high (low) latitudes must operate. It is not sufficient that the toroidal field be stored at low latitudes for emergences to be limited to low latitudes. From these models we infer that the Sun is not in the advection-dominated regime, but also not in the diffusion-dominated regime. Among the identified solar inertial modes, the high-latitude mode with azimuthal order $m=1$ (HL1) has the largest amplitude and plays a role in shaping the Sun's differential rotation profile. We aim to study the evolution of the HL1 mode parameters, utilizing Dopplergrams from the Mount Wilson Observatory (MWO), GONG, and HMI, covering together five solar cycles since 1967. We calculated the averages of line-of-sight Doppler signals over longitude, weighted by the sine of longitude with respect to the central meridian, as a proxy for zonal velocity at the surface. We measured the mode's power and frequency from these zonal velocities at high latitudes in sliding time windows of three years. We find that the amplitude of the HL1 mode undergoes very large variations, taking maximum values at the start of solar cycles 21, 22 and 25, and during the rising phases of cycles 23 and 24. The mode amplitude is anticorrelated with the sunspot number (corr=$-0.50$) but not correlated with the polar field strength. Over the period 1983-2022 the mode amplitude is strongly anticorrelated with the rotation rate at latitude $60^\circ$ (corr=$-0.82$), i.e., with the rotation rate near the mode's critical latitude. The mode frequency variations are small and display no clear solar cycle periodicity above the noise level ($\sim \pm 3$~nHz). Since about 1990, the mode frequency follows an overall decrease of $\sim 0.25$ nHz/year, consistent with the long-term decrease of the angular velocity at $60^\circ$ latitude. We expect that these very long time series of the mode properties will be key to constrain models and reveal the dynamical interactions between the high-latitude modes, rotation, and the magnetic field., Comment: submitted to A&A on 05.09.2024

The Sun's global inertial modes are very sensitive to the solar differential rotation and to properties of the deep solar convection zone which are currently poorly constrained. These properties include the superadiabatic temperature gradient, the latitudinal entropy gradient, and the turbulent viscosity. The inertial modes also play a key role in controlling the Sun's large-scale structure and dynamics, in particular the solar differential rotation. Emerging active regions are associated with convective flows on the spatial scale and lifetimes of supergranules. To understand how these flows are involved in the formation of active regions, we aim to identify where active regions emerge in the supergranulation flow pattern. We computed supergranulation scale flow maps at the surface for all active regions in the Solar Dynamics Observatory Helioseismic Emerging Active Region Survey. We classified each of the active regions into four bins, based on the amplitude of their average surface flow divergence at emergence. We then averaged the flow divergence over the active regions in each bin as a function of time. We also considered a corresponding set of control regions. We found that, on average, the flow divergence increases during the day prior to emergence at a rate independent of the amount of flux that emerges. By subtracting the averaged flow divergence of the control regions, we found that active region emergence is associated with a remaining converging flow at 0.5-1 days prior to emergence. This remnant flow, $\Delta \, \mathrm{div} \, \mathbf{v_h} = (-4.9 \pm 1.7) \times 10^{-6}$ 1/s, corresponds to a flow speed of 10-20 m/s (an order of magnitude less than supergranulation flows) out to a radius of about 10 Mm. We show that these observational results are qualitatively supported by simulations of a small bipole emerging through the near-surface convective layers of the Sun. PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

The difference between individual solar cycles in the magnetic butterfly diagram can mostly be ascribed to the stochasticity of the emergence process. We aim to obtain the expectation value of the butterfly diagram from observations of four cycles. This allows us to further determine the generation rate of the surface radial magnetic field. We use data from Wilcox Solar Observatory to generate time-latitude diagrams spanning cycles 21 to 24 of the surface radial and toroidal magnetic fields, symmetrize them across the equator and cycle-average them. From the mean butterfly diagram and surface toroidal field we then infer the mean poloidal field generation rate at the surface of the Sun. The averaging procedure removes realization noise from individual cycles. The amount of emerging flux required to account for the evolution of the surface radial field is found to match that provided by the observed surface toroidal field and Joy's law. Cycle-averaging butterfly diagrams removes realization noise and artefacts due to imperfect scale separation, and corresponds to an ensemble average that can be interpreted in the mean-field framework. The result can then be directly compared to $\alpha\Omega$-type dynamo models. The Babcock-Leighton $\alpha$-effect is consistent with observations, a result that can be appreciated only if the observational data is averaged in some way., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Solar pores are intense concentrations of magnetic flux that emerge through the Sun's photosphere. When compared to sunspots, they are much smaller in diameter and hence can be impacted and buffeted by neighbouring granular activity to generate significant magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave energy flux within their confines. However, observations of solar pores from ground-based telescope facilities may struggle to capture subtle motions synonymous with higher-order MHD wave signatures due to seeing effects produced in the Earth's atmosphere. Hence, we have exploited timely seeing-free and high-quality observations of four small magnetic pores from the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) on board the Solar Orbiter spacecraft. Through acquisition of data under stable observing conditions, we have been able to measure the area fluctuations and horizontal displacements of the solar pores. Cross correlations between perturbations in intensity, area, line-of-sight velocity, and magnetic fields, coupled with the first-time application of novel Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) techniques on the boundary oscillations, provide a comprehensive diagnosis of the embedded MHD waves as sausage and kink modes. Additionally, the previously elusive m = 2 fluting mode is identified in the most magnetically isolated of the four pores. An important consideration lies in how the identified wave modes contribute towards the transfer of energy into the upper solar atmosphere. We find that the four pores examined have approximately 56%, 72%, 52%, and 34% of their total wave energy associated with the identified sausage modes, and around 23%, 17%, 39%, and 49% to their kink modes, respectively, while the first pore also has around an 11% contribution linked to the fluting mode. Rapidly rotating fluids have a rotation profile which depends only on the distance from the rotation axis, in accordance with the Taylor-Proudman theorem. Although the Sun was expected to be such a body, helioseismology showed that the rotation rate in the convection zone is closer to constant on radii. It has been postulated that this deviation is due to the poles being warmer than the equator by a few degrees. Using numerical simulations, we show that the pole-to-equator temperature difference cannot exceed 7 Kelvin as a result of the back-reaction of the high-latitude baroclinically unstable inertial modes. The observed amplitudes of the modes further indicate that this maximum temperature difference is reached in the Sun. The recent discovery of inertial waves on the surface of the Sun offers new possibilities to learn about the solar interior. These waves are long-lived with a period on the order of the Sun rotation period ($\sim$27 days) and are sensitive to parameters deep inside the Sun. They are excited by turbulent convection, leading to a passive imaging problem. Stars appear darker at their limbs than at their disk centers because at the limb we are viewing the higher and cooler layers of stellar photospheres. Limb darkening derived from state-of-the-art stellar atmosphere models systematically fails to reproduce recent transiting exoplanet light curves from the Kepler, TESS, and JWST telescopes -- stellar brightness obtained from measurements drops less steeply towards the limb than predicted by models. All previous models assumed atmosphere devoid of magnetic fields. Here we use our new stellar atmosphere models computed with the 3D radiative magneto-hydrodynamic code MURaM to show that small-scale concentration of magnetic fields on the stellar surface affect limb darkening at a level that allows us to explain the observations. Our findings provide a way forward to improve the determination of exoplanet radii and especially the transmission spectroscopy analysis for transiting planets, which relies on a very accurate description of stellar limb darkening from the visible through the infrared. Context. Acoustic waves in the Sun are affected by the atmospheric layers, but this region is often ignored in forward models due to the increase in computational cost. Aims. The purpose of this work is to take into account the solar atmosphere without increasing significantly the computational cost. Methods. We solve a scalar wave equation that describes the propagation of acoustic modes inside the Sun using a finite element method. The boundary conditions used to truncate the computational domain are learned from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator, that is the relation between the solution and its normal derivative at the computational boundary. These boundary conditions may be applied at any height above which the background medium is assumed to be radially symmetric. Results. Taking into account the atmosphere is important even for wave frequencies below the acoustic cut-off. In particular, the mode frequencies computed for an isothermal atmosphere differ by up 10 {\mu}Hz from those computed for the VAL-C atmospheric model. We show that learned infinite elements lead to a numerical accuracy similar to that obtained for a traditional radiation boundary condition. Its main advantage is to reproduce the solution for any radially symmetric atmosphere to a very good accuracy at a low computational cost. Conclusions. This work emphasizes the importance of including atmospheric layers in helioseismology and proposes a computationally efficient method to do so.

We use nearly two decades of helioseismic data obtained from the GONG (2002-2020) and HMI (2010-2020) ring-diagram pipelines to examine the temporal variations of the properties of individual equatorial Rossby modes with azimuthal orders in the range $6 \le m \le 10$. We find that the mode parameters obtained from GONG and HMI are consistent during the data overlapping period of 2010-2020. The power and the frequency of each mode exhibit significant temporal variations over the full observing period. Using the GONG data during solar cycles 23 and 24, we find that the mode power averaged over $6 \le m \le 10$ shows a positive correlation with the sunspot number ($0.42$), while the averaged frequency shift is anti-correlated ($-0.91$). The anti-correlation between the average mode power and frequency shift is $-0.44$.

Solar oscillations can be modeled by Galbrun's equation which describes Lagrangian wave displacement in a self-gravitating stratified medium. For spherically symmetric backgrounds, we construct an algorithm to compute efficiently and accurately the coefficients of the Green's tensor of the time-harmonic equation in vector spherical harmonic basis. With only two resolutions, our algorithm provides values of the kernels for all heights of source and receiver, and prescribes analytically the singularities of the kernels. We also derive absorbing boundary conditions (ABC) to model wave propagation in the atmosphere above the cut-off frequency. The construction of ABC, which contains varying gravity terms, is rendered difficult by the complex behavior of the solar potential in low atmosphere and for frequencies below the Lamb frequency. We carry out extensive numerical investigations to compare and evaluate the efficiency of the ABCs in capturing outgoing solutions. Finally, as an application towards helioseismology, we compute synthetic solar power spectra that contain pressure modes as well as internal-gravity (g-) and surface-gravity (f-) ridges which are missing in simpler approximations of the wave equation. The modeling of convection is a long standing problem in stellar physics. Up-to-now, all ad hoc models rely on a free parameter alpha (among others) which has no real physical justification and is therefore poorly constrained. However, a link exists between this free parameter and the entropy of the stellar adiabat. Prescriptions, derived from 3D stellar atmospheric models, are available that provide entropy as a function of stellar atmospheric parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, chemical composition). This can provide constraints on alpha through the development of entropy-calibrated models. Several questions arise as these models are increasingly used. Which prescription should be used? How do uncertainties impact entropy-calibrated models? We aim to study the three existing prescriptions and determine which one should be used, and how. We implemented the entropy-calibration method into the stellar evolution code Cesam2k20 and performed comparisons with the Sun and the alpha Cen system. In addition, we used data from the CIFIST grid of 3D atmosphere models to evaluate the accuracy of the prescriptions. Of the three entropy prescriptions available, we determine which one best reproduces the entropies of the 3D models. We also demonstrate that the entropy obtained from this prescription should be corrected for the evolving chemical composition and for an entropy offset different between various EoS tables, following a precise procedure, otherwise classical parameters obtained from the models will be strongly biased. Finally, we also provide table with entropy of the adiabat of the CIFIST grid, as well as fits of these entropies. We performed a precise examination of entropy-calibrated modelling, and gave recommendations on which adiabatic entropy prescription to use, how to correct it and to implement the method into a stellar evolution code., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures. The eleven year solar cycle is known to affect the global modes of solar acoustic oscillations. In particular, p mode frequencies increase with solar activity. We propose a new method to detect the solar cycle from the p-mode autocorrelation function, and we validate this method using VIRGO/SPM photometric time series from solar cycles 23 and 24. The p-mode autocorrelation function shows multiple wavepackets separated by time lags of $\sim$123 min. Using a one-parameter fitting method (from local helioseismology), we measure the seismic travel times from each wavepacket up to skip number 40. We find that the travel-time variations due to the solar cycle depend sensitively on the skip number, with the strongest signature in odd skips from 17 to 31. Taking the noise covariance into account, the travel-time perturbations can be averaged over all skip numbers to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. This method is robust to noise, simpler to implement than peak bagging in the frequency domain, and is promising for asteroseismology. We estimate that the activity cycle of a Sun-like star should be detectable with this new method in Kepler-like observations down to a visual magnitude of $m_K \sim 11$. Three-dimensional (3D) radiative magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations are the only way to model stellar atmospheres without any ad hoc parameterisations. Several 3D radiative MHD codes have achieved good quantitative agreement with observables for our Sun. We aim to validate the most up-to-date version of the MURaM code against well established quiet Sun measurements, in particular spatially averaged measurements that are relevant for stellar studies. This validation extends the number of solar observables that MURaM can reproduce with high precision. It is also an essential condition for using MURaM to accurately calculate spectra of other cool stars. We simulate the solar upper convection zone and photosphere harbouring a small-scale-dynamo. Using time series of 3D snapshots we calculate the spectral irradiance, limb darkening and selected spectral lines, which we compare to observations. The computed observables agree well with the observations, in particular the limb darkening of the quiet Sun is reproduced remarkably well., Comment: 9 Page, 7 figures, accepted in A&A

In passive imaging, one attempts to reconstruct some coefficients in a wave equation from correlations of observed randomly excited solutions to this wave equation. Many methods proposed for this class of inverse problem so far are only qualitative, e.g., trying to identify the support of a perturbation. Major challenges are the increase in dimensionality when computing correlations from primary data in a preprocessing step, and often very poor pointwise signal-to-noise ratios. In this paper, we propose an approach that addresses both of these challenges: It works only on the primary data while implicitly using the full information contained in the correlation data, and it provides quantitative estimates and convergence by iteration. Our work is motivated by helioseismic holography, a well-established imaging method to map heterogenities and flows in the solar interior. We show that the back-propagation used in classical helioseismic holography can be interpreted as the adjoint of the Fr\'echet derivative of the operator which maps the properties of the solar interior to the correlation data on the solar surface. The theoretical and numerical framework for passive imaging problems developed in this paper extends helioseismic holography to nonlinear problems and allows for quantitative reconstructions. We present a proof of concept in uniform media.

We investigate whether the Babcock-Leighton flux-transport dynamo model remains in agreement with observations if the meridional flow profile is taken from helioseismic inversions. Additionally, we investigate the effect of the loss of toroidal flux through the solar surface. We employ the 2D flux-transport BL dynamo framework. We use the helioseismically-inferred meridional flow profile, and include toroidal flux loss in a way that is consistent with the amount of poloidal flux generated by Joy's law. Our model does not impose a preference for emergences at low latitudes, but we do require that the model produces such a preference. We can find solutions in general agreement with observations, including the equatorward drift of the butterfly wings and the cycle's 11 year period. The most important free parameters in the model are the depth to which the radial turbulent pumping extends and the turbulent diffusivity in the lower half of the convection zone. We find that the pumping needs to extend to depths of about $0.80R_{\odot}$ and the bulk turbulent diffusivity needs to be around 10 km$^2$/s or less. We find that the emergences are restricted to low latitudes without the need to impose such a preference. The flux-transport BL model, incorporating the helioseismically inferred meridional flow and toroidal field loss term, is compatible with the properties of the observed butterfly diagram and with the observed toroidal loss rate. Reasonably tight constraints are placed on the remaining free parameters. The pumping needs to be to just below the depth corresponding to the location where the meridional flow changes direction. Our linear model does not however reproduce the observed "rush to the poles" of the diffuse surface radial field resulting from the decay of sunspots -- reproducing this might require the imposition of a preference for flux to emerge near the equator., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted by A&A

Solar irradiance variability has been monitored almost exclusively from the Earth's perspective. {We present a method to combine the unprecedented observations of the photospheric magnetic field and continuum intensity from outside the Sun-Earth line, which is being recorded by the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager on board the Solar Orbiter mission (SO/PHI), with solar observations recorded from the Earth's perspective to examine the solar irradiance variability from both perspectives simultaneously.} Taking SO/PHI magnetograms and continuum intensity images from the cruise phase of the Solar Orbiter mission and concurrent observations from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO/HMI) as input into the SATIRE-S model, we successfully reconstructed the total solar irradiance variability as apparent from both perspectives. In later stages of the SO mission, the orbital plane will tilt in such a way as to bring the spacecraft away from the ecliptic to heliographic latitudes of up to $33^{\circ}$. The current study sets the template for the reconstruction of solar irradiance variability as seen from outside the ecliptic from data that SO/PHI is expected to collect from such positions. {Such a reconstruction will be beneficial to factoring inclination into how the brightness variations of the Sun compare to those of other cool stars, whose rotation axes are randomly inclined.

Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) observations of the quiet solar atmosphere reveal extended regions of weak emission compared to the ambient quiescent corona. The magnetic nature of these coronal features is not well understood. We study the magnetic properties of the weakly emitting extended regions, which we name coronal voids. In particular, we aim to understand whether these voids result from a reduced heat input into the corona or if they are associated with mainly unipolar and possibly open magnetic fields, similar to coronal holes. We defined the coronal voids via an intensity threshold of 75% of the mean quiet-Sun (QS) EUV intensity observed by the high-resolution EUV channel (HRIEUV) of the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager on Solar Orbiter. The line-of-sight magnetograms of the same solar region recorded by the High Resolution Telescope of the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager allowed us to compare the photospheric magnetic field beneath the coronal voids with that in other parts of the QS. The coronal voids studied here range in size from a few granules to a few supergranules and on average exhibit a reduced intensity of 67% of the mean value of the entire field of view. The magnetic flux density in the photosphere below the voids is 76% (or more) lower than in the surrounding QS. Specifically, the coronal voids show much weaker or no network structures. The detected flux imbalances fall in the range of imbalances found in QS areas of the same size. Conclusions. We conclude that coronal voids form because of locally reduced heating of the corona due to reduced magnetic flux density in the photosphere. This makes them a distinct class of (dark) structure, different from coronal holes., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

The brightness of faculae and network depends on the angle at which they are observed and the magnetic flux density. Close to the limb, assessment of this relationship has until now been hindered by the increasingly lower signal in magnetograms. This preliminary study aims at highlighting the potential of using simultaneous observations from different vantage points to better determine the properties of faculae close to the limb. We use data from the Solar Orbiter/Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (SO/PHI), and the Solar Dynamics Observatory/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (SDO/HMI), recorded at $\sim60^\circ$ angular separation of their lines of sight at the Sun. We use continuum intensity observed close to the limb by SO/PHI and complement it with the co-observed $B_{\rm LOS}$ from SDO/HMI, originating closer to disc centre (as seen by SDO/HMI), thus avoiding the degradation of the magnetic field signal near the limb. We derived the dependence of facular brightness in the continuum on disc position and magnetic flux density from the combined observations of SO/PHI and SDO/HMI. Compared with a single point of view, we were able to obtain contrast values reaching closer to the limb and to lower field strengths. We find the general dependence of the limb distance at which the contrast is maximum on the flux density to be at large in line with single viewpoint observations, in that the higher the flux density is, the closer the turning point lies to the limb. There is a tendency, however, for the maximum to be reached closer to the limb when determined from two vantage points. We note that due to the preliminary nature of this study, these results must be taken with caution. Our analysis shows that studies involving two viewpoints can significantly improve the detection of faculae near the solar limb and the determination of their brightness contrast relative to the quiet Sun.

We introduce a framework to measure the asphericity of Sun-like stars using $a_1$, $a_2$ and $a_4$ coefficients, and constrain their latitudes of magnetic activity. Systematic errors on the inferred coefficients are evaluated in function of key physical and seismic parameters (inclination of rotation axis, average rotation, height-to-noise ratio of peaks in power spectrum). The measured a-coefficients account for rotational oblateness and the effect of surface magnetic activity. We use a simple model that assumes a single latitudinal band of activity. Using solar SOHO/VIRGO/SPM data, we demonstrate the capability of the method to detect the mean active latitude and its intensity changes between 1999-2002 (maximum of activity) and 2006-2009 (minimum of activity). We further apply the method to study the solar-analogue stars 16 Cyg A and B using Kepler observations. An equatorial band of activity, exhibiting intensity that could be comparable to that of the Sun, is detected in 16 Cyg A. However, 16 Cyg B exhibits a bi-modality in $a_4$ that is challenging to explain. We suggest that this could be a manifestation of the transition between a quiet and an active phase of activity. Spectropolarimetric reconstructions of the photospheric vector magnetic field are intrinsically limited by the 180$^\circ$-ambiguity in the orientation of the transverse component. So far, the removal of such an ambiguity has required assumptions about the properties of the photospheric field, which makes disambiguation methods model-dependent. The basic idea is that the unambiguous line-of-sight component of the field measured from one vantage point will generally have a non-zero projection on the ambiguous transverse component measured by the second telescope, thereby determining the ``true'' orientation of the transverse field. Such an idea was developed and implemented in the Stereoscopic Disambiguation Method (SDM), which was recently tested using numerical simulations. In this work we present a first application of the SDM to data obtained by the High Resolution Telescope (HRT) onboard Solar Orbiter during the March 2022 campaign, when the angle with Earth was 27 degrees. The method is successfully applied to remove the ambiguity in the transverse component of the vector magnetogram solely using observations (from HRT and from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager), for the first time. The SDM is proven to provide observation-only disambiguated vector magnetograms that are spatially homogeneous and consistent. The Sun's axisymmetric large-scale flows, differential rotation and meridional circulation, are thought to be maintained by the influence of rotation on the thermal-convective motions in the solar convection zone. These large-scale flows are crucial for maintaining the Sun's global magnetic field. Over the last several decades, our understanding of large-scale motions in the Sun has significantly improved, both through observational and theoretical efforts. Helioseismology has constrained the flow topology in the solar interior, and the growth of supercomputers has enabled simulations that can self-consistently generate large scale flows in rotating spherical convective shells. In this chapter, we review our current understanding of solar convection and the large-scale flows present in the Sun, including those associated with the recently discovered inertial modes of oscillation. We discuss some issues still outstanding, and provide an outline of future efforts needed to address these.

We use wavefront sensing to characterise the image quality of the the High Resolution Telescope (HRT) of the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (SO/PHI) data products during the second remote sensing window of the Solar Orbiter (SO) nominal mission phase. Our ultimate aims are to reconstruct the HRT data by deconvolving with the HRT point spread function (PSF) and to correct for the effects of optical aberrations on the data. We use a pair of focused--defocused images to compute the wavefront error and derive the PSF of HRT by means of a phase diversity (PD) analysis. The wavefront error of HRT depends on the orbital distance of SO to the Sun. At distances $>0.5$\,au, the wavefront error is small, and stems dominantly from the inherent optical properties of HRT. At distances $<0.5$\,au, the thermo-optical effect of the Heat Rejection Entrance Window (HREW) becomes noticeable. We develop an interpolation scheme for the wavefront error that depends on the thermal variation of the HREW with the distance of SO to the Sun. We also introduce a new level of image reconstruction, termed `aberration correction', which is designed to reduce the noise caused by image deconvolution while removing the aberrations caused by the HREW. The computed PSF via phase diversity significantly reduces the degradation caused by the HREW in the near-perihelion HRT data. In addition, the aberration correction increases the noise by a factor of only $1.45$ compared to the factor of $3$ increase that results from the usual PD reconstructions.

Earth-side observations of solar p modes can be used to image and monitor magnetic activity on the Sun's far side. Here we use magnetograms of the far side obtained by the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) onboard Solar Orbiter (SO) to directly assess -- for the first time -- the validity of far-side helioseismic holography. We wish to co-locate the positions of active regions in helioseismic images and magnetograms, and to calibrate the helioseismic measurements in terms of magnetic field strength. We identify three magnetograms on 18 November 2020, 3 October 2021, and 3 February 2022 displaying a total of six active regions on the far side. The first two dates are from SO's cruise phase, the third from the beginning of the nominal operation phase. We compute contemporaneous seismic phase maps for these three dates using helioseismic holography applied to time series of Dopplergrams from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Among the six active regions seen in SO/PHI magnetograms, five active regions are identified on the seismic maps at almost the same positions as on the magnetograms. One region is too weak to be detected above the seismic noise. To calibrate the seismic maps, we fit a linear relationship between the seismic phase shifts and the unsigned line-of-sight magnetic field averaged over the active region areas extracted from the SO/PHI magnetograms. SO/PHI provides the strongest evidence so far that helioseismic imaging provides reliable information about active regions on the far side, including their positions, areas, and mean unsigned magnetic field., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

In November 2021, Solar Orbiter started its nominal mission phase. The remote-sensing instruments on board the spacecraft acquired scientific data during three observing windows surrounding the perihelion of the first orbit of this phase. The aim of the analysis is the detection of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave modes in an active region by exploiting the capabilities of spectropolarimetric measurements. The High Resolution Telescope (HRT) of the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (SO/PHI) on board the Solar Orbiter acquired a high-cadence data set of an active region. This is studied in the paper. B-$\omega$ and phase-difference analyses are applied on line-of-sight velocity and circular polarization maps and other averaged quantities. We find that several MHD modes at different frequencies are excited in all analysed structures. The leading sunspot shows a linear dependence of the phase lag on the angle between the magnetic field and the line of sight of the observer in its penumbra. The magnetic pore exhibits global resonances at several frequencies, which are also excited by different wave modes. The SO/PHI measurements clearly confirm the presence of magnetic and velocity oscillations that are compatible with one or more MHD wave modes in pores and a sunspot. Improvements in modelling are still necessary to interpret the relation between the fluctuations of different diagnostics.

Inertial modes have been observed on the Sun at low longitudinal wavenumbers. These modes probe the dynamics and structure of the solar convection zone down to the tachocline. While linear analysis allows the complex eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of these modes to be computed, it gives no information about their excitation nor about their amplitudes. We tested the hypothesis that solar inertial modes are stochastically excited by the turbulent motions entailed by convection. We have developed a theoretical formalism where the turbulent velocity fluctuations provide the mechanical work necessary to excite the modes. The modes are described by means of a 2D linear wave equation, relevant for the quasi-toroidal modes observed on the Sun, with a source term, under the beta plane approximation. Latitudinal differential rotation is included in the form of a parabolic profile that approximates the solar differential rotation at low and mid latitudes. We obtain synthetic power spectra for the wave's latitudinal velocity, longitudinal velocity, and radial vorticity, with azimuthal orders between 1 and 20. The synthetic power spectra contain the classical equatorial Rossby modes, as well as a rich spectrum of additional modes. The mode amplitudes are found to be of the same order of magnitude as observed on the Sun (~ 1 m/s). There is a qualitative transition between low and high azimuthal orders: the power spectra for m < 5 show modes that are clearly resolved in frequency space, while the power spectra for m > 5 display regions of excess power that consist of many overlapping modes. The general agreement between the predicted and observed inertial mode amplitudes supports the assumption of stochastic excitation by turbulent convection. In order to make accurate inferences about the solar interior using helioseismology, it is essential to understand all the relevant physical effects on the observations. One effect to understand is the (complex-valued) ratio of the horizontal to vertical displacement of the p- and f-modes at the height at which they are observed. Unfortunately, it is impossible to measure this ratio directly from a single vantage point, and it has been difficult to disentangle observationally from other effects. In this paper we attempt to measure the ratio directly using 7.5 hours of simultaneous observations from the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager on board Solar Orbiter and the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory. While image geometry problems make it difficult to determine the exact ratio, it appears to agree well with that expected from adiabatic oscillations in a standard solar model. On the other hand it does not agree with a commonly used approximation, indicating that this approximation should not be used in helioseismic analyses. The High Resolution Telescope (HRT) of the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager on board the Solar Orbiter spacecraft (SO/PHI) and the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) both infer the photospheric magnetic field from polarised light images. SO/PHI is the first magnetograph to move out of the Sun--Earth line and will provide unprecedented access to the Sun's poles. This provides excellent opportunities for new research wherein the magnetic field maps from both instruments are used simultaneously. We aim to compare the magnetic field maps from these two instruments and discuss any possible differences between them. We used data from both instruments obtained during Solar Orbiter's inferior conjunction on 7 March 2022. The HRT data were additionally treated for geometric distortion and degraded to the same resolution as HMI. The HMI data were re-projected to correct for the $3^{\circ}$ separation between the two observatories. SO/PHI-HRT and HMI produce remarkably similar line-of-sight magnetograms, with a slope coefficient of $0.97$, an offset below $1$ G, and a Pearson correlation coefficient of $0.97$. However, SO/PHI-HRT infers weaker line-of-sight fields for the strongest fields. As for the vector magnetic field, SO/PHI-HRT was compared to both the $720$-second and $90$-second HMI vector magnetic field: SO/PHI-HRT has a closer alignment with the $90$-second HMI vector. In the weak signal regime ($< 600$ G), SO/PHI-HRT measures stronger and more horizontal fields than HMI, very likely due to the greater noise in the SO/PHI-HRT data. In the strong field regime ($\gtrsim 600$ G), HRT infers lower field strengths but with similar inclinations (a slope of $0.92$) and azimuths (a slope of $1.02$). Stellar spectra contain a large amount of information about the conditions in stellar atmospheres. However, extracting this information is challenging and demands comprehensive numerical modelling. Here, we present stellar spectra synthesized using the recently developed state-of-the-art MPS-ATLAS code on a fine grid of stellar fundamental parameters. These calculations have been extensively validated against solar and stellar observations and can be used for various astrophysical applications. The spectra are available at the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL, https://edmond.mpdl.mpg.de/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.17617/3.NJ56TR) and have been also incorporated into the ExoTiC-LD python package (https://github.com/Exo-TiC/ExoTiC-LD/) which returns stellar limb darkening coefficients used for the software package Exoplanet Timeseries Characterisation (ExoTic)., Comment: 3 pages

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission searches for new exoplanets. The observing strategy of TESS results in high-precision photometry of millions of stars across the sky, allowing for detailed asteroseismic studies of individual systems. In this work, we present a detailed asteroseismic analysis of the giant star HD 76920 hosting a highly eccentric giant planet ($e = 0.878$) with an orbital period of 415 days, using 5 sectors of TESS light curve that cover around 140 days of data. Solar-like oscillations in HD 76920 are detected around $52 \, \mu$Hz by TESS for the first time. By utilizing asteroseismic modeling that takes classical observational parameters and stellar oscillation frequencies as constraints, we determine improved measurements of the stellar mass ($1.22 \pm 0.11\, M_\odot$), radius ($8.68 \pm 0.34\,R_\odot$), and age ($5.2 \pm 1.4\,$Gyr). With the updated parameters of the host star, we update the semi-major axis and mass of the planet as $a=1.165 \pm 0.035$ au and $M_{\rm p}\sin{i} = 3.57 \pm 0.22\,M_{\rm Jup}$. With an orbital pericenter of $0.142 \pm 0.005$ au, we confirm that the planet is currently far away enough from the star to experience negligible tidal decay until being engulfed in the stellar envelope. Helioseismic holography is a useful method to detect active regions on the Sun's far side and improve space weather forecasts. We aim to improve helioseismic holography by using a clear formulation of the problem, an accurate forward solver in the frequency domain, and a better understanding of the noise properties. Building on the work of Lindsey et al., we define the forward- and backward-propagated wave fields (ingression and egression) in terms of a Green's function. This Green's function is computed using an accurate forward solver in the frequency domain. We analyse overlapping segments of 31 hr of SDO/HMI dopplergrams, with a cadence of 24 hr. Phase shifts between the ingression and the egression are measured and averaged to detect active regions on the far side. The phase maps are compared with direct EUV intensity maps from STEREO/EUVI. We confirm that medium-size active regions can be detected on the far side with high confidence. Their evolution (and possible emergence) can be monitored on a daily time scale. Seismic maps averaged over 3 days provide an active region detection rate as high as 75% and a false discovery rate only as low as 7%, for active regions with areas above one thousandth of an hemisphere. For a large part, these improvements can be attributed to the use of a complete Green's function (all skips) and to the use of all observations on the front side (full pupil). Over the past years, thousands of stellar flares have been detected by harvesting data from large photometric surveys. These detections, however, do not account for potential sources of contamination such as background stars appearing in the same aperture as the primary target. We present a new method for identifying the true flare sources in large photometric surveys using data from the Kepler mission. Potential flares are identified in two steps: first, we search the light curves for at least two subsequent data points exceeding a 5{\sigma} threshold above the running mean. For these two cadences, we subtract the "quiet" stellar flux from the Kepler pixel data to obtain new images where the potential flare is the main light source. In the second step, we use a Bayesian approach to fit the point spread function of the instrument to determine the most likely location of the flux excess on the detector. We applied our method to 5862 main-sequence stars with near-solar effective temperatures. We found 2274 events exceeding the 5-sigma in at least two consecutive points in the light curves. Applying the second step reduced this number to 342 superflares. Of these, 283 flares happened on 178 target stars, 47 events are associated with fainter background stars, and in 10 cases, the flare location cannot be distinguished between the target and a background star. We also present cases where flares have been reported previously but our technique could not attribute them to the target star. We conclude that 1) identifying outliers in the light curves alone is insufficient to attribute them to stellar flares and 2) flares can only be uniquely attributed to a certain star when the instrument pixel-level data together with the point spread function are taken into account. KIC 6951642 has been reported as a candidate hybrid pulsator of type-$\gamma$ Doradus-$\delta$ Scuti from observations of the first quarters of the Kepler mission. We aim to investigate the pulsating nature of KIC 6951642 and to search for the signature of rotation and/or activity in the light curves. We performed an iterative frequency search of both Fourier spectra, and searched for regular patterns in them. We applied spectrum synthesis to determine the atmospheric stellar parameters. Since KIC 6951642 was reported to belong to a spectroscopic binary system, we fitted the time delays derived from the light curves with the radial velocities obtained from published as well as new spectra in an attempt to improve the quality of the first orbit. Follow-up spectroscopy showed that KIC 6951642 is a fast-rotating F0-type star in a possible single-lined binary with a period of $\sim$4.8 yr. In the low-frequency regime, we identified the frequencies of 0.721 d$^{-1}$ as well as of 0.0087 d$^{-1}$. We attribute the first frequency to stellar rotation and the second one to stellar activity with a cycle. We also detected $g$ modes, with the strongest mode located at 2.238 d$^{-1}$, as well as three asymmetric multiplets (with a mean spacing of 0.675$\pm$0.044 d$^{-1}$). In the high-frequency regime, we detected frequencies of type-$\delta$ Scuti, with the strongest mode located at 13.96 d$^{-1}$, as well as seven asymmetric multiplets (with a mean spacing of 0.665$\pm$0.084 d$^{-1}$). We subsequently identified a few more frequencies that appear to be combinations of a $g$ or $p$ mode and one of the higher cited frequencies not due to pulsations. We propose that KIC 6951642 accommodates for a fast-rotating $\gamma$ Dor-$\delta$ Sct hybrid star with various rotationally split multiplets of $g$ and $p$ modes and that it also displays a cycle lasting years of (possible) stellar activity.

The ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter space mission has been successfully launched in February 2020. Onboard is the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (SO/PHI), which has two telescopes, a High Resolution Telescope (HRT) and the Full Disc Telescope (FDT). The instrument is designed to infer the photospheric magnetic field and line-of-sight velocity through differential imaging of the polarised light emitted by the Sun. It calculates the full Stokes vector at 6 wavelength positions at the Fe I 617.3 nm absorption line. Due to telemetry constraints, the instrument nominally processes these Stokes profiles onboard, however when telemetry is available, the raw images are downlinked and reduced on ground. Here the architecture of the on-ground pipeline for HRT is presented, which also offers additional corrections not currently available on board the instrument. The pipeline can reduce raw images to the full Stokes vector with a polarimetric sensitivity of $10^{-3}\cdot I_{c}$ or better.

Several types of inertial modes have been detected on the Sun. Properties of these inertial modes have been studied in the linear regime but have not been studied in nonlinear simulations of solar rotating convection. Comparing the nonlinear simulations, the linear theory, and the solar observations is important to better understand the differences between the models and the real Sun. We wish to detect and characterize the modes present in a nonlinear numerical simulation of solar convection, in particular to understand the amplitudes and lifetimes of the modes. We developed a code with a Yin-Yang grid to carry out fully-nonlinear numerical simulations of rotating convection in a spherical shell. The stratification is solar-like up to 0.96R. The simulations cover a duration of about 15 solar years. Various large-scale modes at low frequencies are extracted from the simulation. Their characteristics are compared to those from the linear model and to the observations. Among other modes, both the equatorial Rossby modes and the columnar convective modes are seen in the simulation. The columnar convective modes contain most of the large-scale velocity power outside the tangential cylinder and substantially contribute to the heat and angular momentum transport. Equatorial Rossby modes with no radial node (n=0) are also found: They have the same spatial structures as the linear eigenfunctions. They are stochastically excited by convection and have the amplitudes of a few m/s and mode linewidths of about 20-30 nHz, which are comparable to those observed on the Sun. We also confirm the existence of the mixed modes between the equatorial Rossby modes and the columnar convective modes in our nonlinear simulation, as predicted by the linear eigenmode analysis. We also see the high-latitude mode with m=1 in our nonlinear simulation but its amplitude is much weaker than that observed on the Sun., Comment: 18 pages, 21 figures, 1 table. Mixed modes observed in red giants allow for investigation of the stellar interior structures. One important feature in these structures is the buoyancy spike caused by the discontinuity of the chemical gradient left behind during the first dredge-up. The buoyancy spike emerges at the base of the convective zone in low-luminosity red giants and later becomes a glitch when the g-mode cavity expands to encompass the spike. Here, we study the impact of the buoyancy spike on the dipolar mixed modes using stellar models with different properties. We find that the applicability of the asymptotic formalisms for the coupling factor, q, varies depending on the location of the evanescent zone, relative to the position of the spike. Significant deviations between the value of q inferred from fitting the oscillation frequencies and either of the formalisms proposed in the literature are found in models with a large frequency separation in the interval 5 to 15 microHz, with evanescent zones located in a transition region which may be thin or thick. However, it is still possible to reconcile q with the predictions from the asymptotic formalisms, by choosing which formalism to use according to the value of q. For stars approaching the luminosity bump, the buoyancy spike becomes a glitch and strongly affects the mode frequencies. Fitting the frequencies without accounting for the glitch leads to unphysical variations in the inferred q, but we show that this is corrected when properly accounting for the glitch in the fitting., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures

Surfaces of the Sun and other cool stars are filled with magnetic fields, which are either seen as dark compact spots or more diffuse bright structures like faculae. Both hamper detection and characterisation of exoplanets, affecting stellar brightness and spectra, as well as transmission spectra. However, the expected facular and spot signals in stellar data are quite different, for instance they have distinct temporal and spectral profiles. Consequently, corrections of stellar data for magnetic activity can greatly benefit from the insight on whether the stellar signal is dominated by spots or faculae. Here, we utilise a surface flux transport model (SFTM) to show that more effective cancellation of diffuse magnetic flux associated with faculae leads to spot area coverages increasing faster with stellar magnetic activity than that by faculae. Our calculations explain the observed dependence between solar spot and facular area coverages and allow its extension to stars more active than the Sun. This extension enables anticipating the properties of stellar signal and its more reliable mitigation, leading to a more accurate characterisation of exoplanets and their atmospheres., Comment: 10 pages, 6 Figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

The twist of the magnetic field above a sunspot is an important quantity in solar physics. For example, magnetic twist plays a role in the initiation of flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Various proxies for the twist above the photosphere have been found using models of uniformly twisted flux tubes, and are routinely computed from single photospheric vector magnetograms. One class of proxies is based on $\alpha_z$, the ratio of the vertical current to the vertical magnetic field. Another class of proxies is based on the so-called twist density, $q$, which depends on the ratio of the azimuthal field to the vertical field. However, the sensitivity of these proxies to temporal fluctuations of the magnetic field has not yet been well characterized. We aim to determine the sensitivity of twist proxies to temporal fluctuations in the magnetic field as estimated from time-series of SDO/HMI vector magnetic field maps. To this end, we introduce a model of a sunspot with a peak vertical field of 2370 Gauss at the photosphere and a uniform twist density $q= -0.024$ Mm$^{-1}$. We add realizations of the temporal fluctuations of the magnetic field that are consistent with SDO/HMI observations, including the spatial correlations. Using a Monte-Carlo approach, we determine the robustness of the different proxies to the temporal fluctuations. The temporal fluctuations of the three components of the magnetic field are correlated for spatial separations up to 1.4 Mm (more than expected from the point spread function alone). The Monte-Carlo approach enables us to demonstrate that several proxies for the twist of the magnetic field are not biased in each of the individual magnetograms. The associated random errors on the proxies have standard deviations in the range between $0.002$ and $0.006$ Mm$^{-1}$, which is smaller by approximately one order of magnitude than the mean value of $q$., Comment: accepted in A&A

Context. In local helioseismology, the travel times of acoustic waves propagating in opposite directions along the same meridian inform us about horizontal flows in the north-south direction. The longitudinal averages of the north-south helioseismic travel-time shifts vary with the sunspot cycle. Aims. We aim to study the contribution of inflows into solar active regions to this solar-cycle variation. Methods. To do so, we identify the local flows around active regions in the horizontal flow maps obtained from correlation tracking of granulation in SDO/HMI continuum images. We compute the forward-modeled travel-time perturbations caused by these inflows using 3D sensitivity kernels. In order to compare with the observations, we average these forward-modeled travel-time perturbations over longitude and time in the same way as the measured travel times. Results. The forward-modeling approach shows that the inflows associated with active regions may account for only a fraction of the solar-cycle variations in the north-south travel-time measurements. Conclusions. The travel-time perturbations caused by the large-scale inflows surrounding the active regions do not explain in full the solar-cycle variations seen in the helioseismic measurements of the meridional circulation. We propose to develop a wide-field and ultra-high-precision photometric survey mission, temporarily named "Earth 2.0 (ET)". This mission is designed to measure, for the first time, the occurrence rate and the orbital distributions of Earth-sized planets. ET consists of seven 30cm telescopes, to be launched to the Earth-Sun's L2 point. Six of these are transit telescopes with a field of view of 500 square degrees. Staring in the direction that encompasses the original Kepler field for four continuous years, this monitoring will return tens of thousands of transiting planets, including the elusive Earth twins orbiting solar-type stars. The seventh telescope is a 30cm microlensing telescope that will monitor an area of 4 square degrees toward the galactic bulge. This, combined with simultaneous ground-based KMTNet observations, will measure masses for hundreds of long-period and free-floating planets. Together, the transit and the microlensing telescopes will revolutionize our understandings of terrestrial planets across a large swath of orbital distances and free space. The detection of the first exoplanet paved the way into the era of transit photometry space missions with a revolutionary photometric precision that aim at discovering new exoplanetary systems around different types of stars. With this high precision, it is possible to derive very accurately the radii of exoplanets which is crucial for constraining their type and composition. However, it requires an accurate description of host stars, especially their center-to-limb variation of intensities (so called limb darkening) as it affects the planet-to-star radius ratio determination. We aim at improving the accuracy of limb darkening calculations for stars with a wide range of fundamental parameters. We used the recently developed 1D MPS-ATLAS code to compute model atmosphere structures and to synthesize stellar limb darkening on a very fine grid of stellar parameters. For the computations we utilized the most accurate information on chemical element abundances and mixing length parameters including convective overshoot. The stellar limb darkening was fitted using the two most accurate limb darkening laws: the power-2 and 4-parameters non-linear laws. We present a new extensive library of stellar model atmospheric structures, the synthesized stellar limb darkening curves, and the coefficients of parameterized limb-darkening laws on a very fine grid of stellar parameters in the Kepler, TESS, CHEOPS, and PLATO passbands. The fine grid allows overcoming the sizable errors introduced by the need to interpolate. Our computations of solar limb darkening are in a good agreement with available solar measurements at different view angles and wavelengths. Our computations of stellar limb darkening agree well with available measurements of Kepler stars. Asteroseismology has become widely accepted as a benchmark for accurate and precise fundamental stellar properties. It can therefore be used to validate and calibrate stellar parameters derived from other approaches. Meanwhile, one can leverage large-volume surveys in photometry, spectroscopy, and astrometry to infer stellar parameters over a wide range of evolutionary stages, independently of asteroseismology. Our pipeline, SEDEX, compares the spectral energy distribution predicted by the MARCS and BOSZ model spectra with 32 photometric bandpasses, combining data from 9 major, large-volume photometric surveys. We restrict the analysis to targets with available spectroscopy from the APOGEE, GALAH, and RAVE surveys to lift the temperature-extinction degeneracy. The cross-survey atmospheric parameter and uncertainty estimates are homogenized with artificial neural networks. Validation of our results with CHARA interferometry, HST CALSPEC spectrophotometry, and asteroseismology, shows that we achieve high precision and accuracy. We present a catalog of improved interstellar extinction ($\sigma_{A_V} \simeq$ 0.14 mag) and stellar radii ($\sigma_R/R \simeq$ 7.4\%) for $\sim$1.5 million stars in the low- to high-extinction ($A_V \lesssim 6 $ mag) fields observed by the spectroscopic surveys. We derive global extinctions for 184 Gaia DR2 open clusters, and confirm the differential extinction in NGC 6791 and NGC 6819 that have been subject to extensive asteroseismic analysis. Furthermore, we report 36,854 double-lined spectroscopic main-sequence binary candidates. This catalog will be valuable for providing constraints on detailed modelling of stars and for constructing 3D dust maps of the Kepler field, the TESS CVZs, and the PLATO long duration observation fields., Comment: The paper has been accepted by ApJS and is in the press. In a previous paper we studied the effect of latitudinal rotation on solar equatorial Rossby modes in the beta-plane approximation. Since then, a rich spectrum of inertial modes has been observed on the Sun, which is not limited to the equatorial Rossby modes and includes high-latitude modes. Here we extend the computation of toroidal modes in 2D to spherical geometry, using realistic solar differential rotation and including viscous damping. The aim is to compare the computed mode spectra with the observations and to study mode stability. At fixed radius, we solve the eigenvalue problem numerically using a spherical harmonics decomposition of the velocity stream function. Due to the presence of viscous critical layers, the spectrum consists of four different families: Rossby modes, high-latitude modes, critical-latitude modes, and strongly damped modes. For each longitudinal wavenumber m<4, up to three Rossby-like modes are present on the sphere, in contrast to the equatorial beta plane where only the equatorial Rossby mode is present. The least damped modes in the model have eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions that resemble the observed modes; the comparison improves when the radius is taken in the lower half of the convection zone. For radii above 0.75R and Ekman numbers E<10^{-4}, at least one mode is unstable. For either m=1 or m=2, up to two Rossby modes are unstable when the radial dependence of the Ekman number follows a quenched diffusivity model (E=2. 10^{-5} at the base of the convection zone). For m=3, up to two Rossby modes can be unstable, including the equatorial Rossby mode. Although the 2D model discussed here is highly simplified, the spectrum of toroidal modes appears to include many of the observed solar inertial modes. The self-excited modes in the model have frequencies close to those of the observed modes with the largest amplitudes.

On the one hand, several types of global-scale inertial modes of oscillation have been observed on the Sun. They include the equatorial Rossby modes, critical-latitude modes, and high-latitude modes. On the other hand, the columnar convective modes (predicted by simulations; also known as banana cells or thermal Rossby waves) remain elusive. We aim to investigate the influence of turbulent diffusivities, non-adiabatic stratification, differential rotation, and a latitudinal entropy gradient on the linear global modes of the rotating solar convection zone. We solve numerically for the eigenmodes of a rotating compressible fluid inside a spherical shell. We identify modes in the inertial frequency range including the columnar convective modes, as well as modes of mixed character. The corresponding mode dispersion relations and eigenfunctions are computed for azimuthal orders $m \leq 16$. The three main results are as follows. Firstly, we find that, for $m \gtrsim 5$, the radial dependence of the equatorial Rossby modes with no radial node ($n=0$) is radically changed from the traditional expectation ($r^m$) for turbulent diffusivities $\gtrsim 10^{12}$ cm$^2$ s$^{-1}$. Secondly, we find mixed modes, i.e. modes that share properties of the equatorial Rossby modes with one radial node ($n=1$) and the columnar convective modes. Thirdly, we show that the $m=1$ high-latitude mode in the model is consistent with the solar observations when the latitudinal entropy gradient corresponding to a thermal wind balance is included (baroclinally unstable mode). To our knowledge, this work is the first realistic eigenvalue calculation of the global modes of the rotating solar convection zone. This calculation reveals a rich spectrum of modes in the inertial frequency range, which can be directly compared to the observations. The Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) on board the Solar Orbiter (SO) spacecraft observed small extreme ultraviolet (EUV) bursts, termed campfires, that have been proposed to be brightenings near the apexes of low-lying loops in the quiet-Sun atmosphere. The underlying magnetic processes driving these campfires are not understood. During the cruise phase of SO and at a distance of 0.523\,AU from the Sun, the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager on Solar Orbiter (SO/PHI) observed a quiet-Sun region jointly with SO/EUI, offering the possibility to investigate the surface magnetic field dynamics underlying campfires at a spatial resolution of about 380~km. In 71\% of the 38 isolated events, campfires are confined between bipolar magnetic features, which seem to exhibit signatures of magnetic flux cancellation. The flux cancellation occurs either between the two main footpoints, or between one of the footpoints of the loop housing the campfire and a nearby opposite polarity patch. In one particularly clear-cut case, we detected the emergence of a small-scale magnetic loop in the internetwork followed soon afterwards by a campfire brightening adjacent to the location of the linear polarisation signal in the photosphere, that is to say near where the apex of the emerging loop lays. The rest of the events were observed over small scattered magnetic features, which could not be identified as magnetic footpoints of the campfire hosting loops. The majority of campfires could be driven by magnetic reconnection triggered at the footpoints, similar to the physical processes occurring in the burst-like EUV events discussed in the literature. About a quarter of all analysed campfires, however, are not associated to such magnetic activity in the photosphere, which implies that other heating mechanisms are energising these small-scale EUV brightenings.

Active regions (ARs) play an important role in the magnetic dynamics of the Sun. Solar surface flux transport models (SFTMs) are used to describe the evolution of the radial magnetic field at the solar surface. There is however uncertainty about using these models in the early stage of AR evolution. We aim to test the applicability of SFTMs in the first days after the emergence of ARs by comparing them with observations. The models we employ range from passive evolution to models where the inflows around ARs are included. We simulate the evolution of the surface magnetic field of 17 emerging active regions using a local surface flux transport simulation. We selected regions that do not form fully-fledged sunspots that exhibit moat flows. The simulation includes diffusion and advection. We use observed flows from local correlation tracking of solar granulation, as well as parametrizations of the inflows around ARs. To evaluate our simulations, we measure the cross correlation between the observed and the simulated magnetic field, as well as the total unsigned flux of the ARs, over time. We also test the validity of our simulations by varying the starting time relative to the emergence of flux. We find that the simulations using observed surface flows can reproduce the evolution of the observed magnetic flux. The effect of buffeting of the field by supergranulation can be described as a diffusion process. The SFTM is applicable after 90% of the peak total unsigned flux of the AR has emerged. Diffusivities in the range between $D=250$ to $720$ km$^2$/s are consistent with the evolution of the AR flux in the first five days after this time. We find that the converging flows around emerging ARs are not important for the evolution of the total flux of the AR in these first five days; their effect of increasing flux cancellation is balanced by the decrease of flux transport away from the AR., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 13 pages, 11 figures
