1. Academic Women's Labour during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Review and Thematic Analysis of the Literature

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted academic labour, with women being disproportionately negatively affected. This scoping review provides an exploratory snapshot into the corpus of literature investigating the impact of the pandemic on academic labour. We used a set of criteria to first identify the 86 titles from which we selected 45 as the data set. We analyzed the data on characteristics of location, investigative methods, publication information, and discipline. The findings showed that most of the data were global in context; used primarily qualitative methodologies; published in a wide variety of journals; and spanned diverse disciplines, including science and health, education, business, sociology, and political sciences. We then analyzed the data thematically. The themes we identified were gender inequity, identities and intersectionality, performing work-home binaries, and invisible labour. We added a fifth theme, lived experiences, consisting of women academics' firsthand accounts. We consider this theme unique, despite its overlap with the other themes, because it is evidence of women academics telling their personal stories. We discuss how our findings show that pandemic conditions worsened existing inequities. The solutions most often cited in the data place emphasis and responsibility on the individual, but we argue that institutions should instead be responsible to redress inequities through improving workplace labour processes. Our research can aid future research on how policy theory can inform socially just policies and practices in the post-pandemic university.

2. On Computational Indistinguishability and Logical Relations

Abstract: A $\lambda$-calculus is introduced in which all programs can be evaluated in probabilistic polynomial time and in which there is sufficient structure to represent sequential cryptographic constructions and adversaries for them, even when the latter are oracle-based. A notion of observational equivalence capturing computational indistinguishability and a class of approximate logical relations are then presented, showing that the latter represent a sound proof technique for the former. The work concludes with the presentation of an example of a security proof in which the encryption scheme induced by a pseudorandom function is proven secure against active adversaries in a purely equational style.

3. Horizon quantum mechanics for coherent quantum black holes

Abstract: The formalism of the horizon quantum mechanics is applied to electrically neutral and spherically symmetric black hole geometries emerging from coherent quantum states of gravity to compute the probability that the matter source is inside the horizon. We find that quantum corrections to the classical horizon radius become significant if the matter core has a size comparable to the Compton length of the constituents and the system is indeed a black hole with probability very close to one unless the core radius is close to the (classical) gravitational radius., Comment: LaTeXT, 16 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

5. Training on the Fly: On-device Self-supervised Learning aboard Nano-drones within 20 mW

Abstract: Miniaturized cyber-physical systems (CPSes) powered by tiny machine learning (TinyML), such as nano-drones, are becoming an increasingly attractive technology. Their small form factor (i.e., ~10cm diameter) ensures vast applicability, ranging from the exploration of narrow disaster scenarios to safe human-robot interaction. Simple electronics make these CPSes inexpensive, but strongly limit the computational, memory, and sensing resources available on board. In real-world applications, these limitations are further exacerbated by domain shift. This fundamental machine learning problem implies that model perception performance drops when moving from the training domain to a different deployment one. To cope with and mitigate this general problem, we present a novel on-device fine-tuning approach that relies only on the limited ultra-low power resources available aboard nano-drones. Then, to overcome the lack of ground-truth training labels aboard our CPS, we also employ a self-supervised method based on ego-motion consistency. Albeit our work builds on top of a specific real-world vision-based human pose estimation task, it is widely applicable for many embedded TinyML use cases. Our 512-image on-device training procedure is fully deployed aboard an ultra-low power GWT GAP9 System-on-Chip and requires only 1MB of memory while consuming as low as 19mW or running in just 510ms (at 38mW). Finally, we demonstrate the benefits of our on-device learning approach by field-testing our closed-loop CPS, showing a reduction in horizontal position error of up to 26% vs. a non-fine-tuned state-of-the-art baseline. Abstract: ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/$c$ beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380$\pm$26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/$c$ setting and 379$\pm$35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/$c$ setting.

Abstract: We present a new lattice QCD calculation of the leading order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_\mu$. We reduce uncertainties compared to our earlier computation by $40\%$, arXiv:2002.12347. We perform simulations on finer lattices allowing for an even more accurate continuum extrapolation. We also include a small, long-distance contribution obtained using input from experiments in a low-energy regime where they all agree. Combined with other standard model contributions our result leads to a prediction that differs from the measurement of $a_\mu$ by only 0.9 standard deviations. This provides a remarkable validation of the standard model to 0.37ppm., Comment: 55 pages, 31 figures

8. Learning to Estimate the Pose of a Peer Robot in a Camera Image by Predicting the States of its LEDs

Abstract: We consider the problem of training a fully convolutional network to estimate the relative 6D pose of a robot given a camera image, when the robot is equipped with independent controllable LEDs placed in different parts of its body. The training data is composed by few (or zero) images labeled with a ground truth relative pose and many images labeled only with the true state (\textsc{on} or \textsc{off}) of each of the peer LEDs. The former data is expensive to acquire, requiring external infrastructure for tracking the two robots; the latter is cheap as it can be acquired by two unsupervised robots moving randomly and toggling their LEDs while sharing the true LED states via radio. Training with the latter dataset on estimating the LEDs' state of the peer robot (\emph{pretext task}) promotes learning the relative localization task (\emph{end task}). Experiments on real-world data acquired by two autonomous wheeled robots show that a model trained only on the pretext task successfully learns to localize a peer robot on the image plane; fine-tuning such model on the end task with few labeled images yields statistically significant improvements in 6D relative pose estimation with respect to baselines that do not use pretext-task pre-training, and alternative approaches. Estimating the state of multiple independent LEDs promotes learning to estimate relative heading. The approach works even when a large fraction of training images do not include the peer robot and generalizes well to unseen environments.

Abstract: The determination of the direction of a stellar core collapse via its neutrino emission is crucial for the identification of the progenitor for a multimessenger follow-up. A highly effective method of reconstructing supernova directions within the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is introduced. The supernova neutrino pointing resolution is studied by simulating and reconstructing electron-neutrino charged-current absorption on $^{40}$Ar and elastic scattering of neutrinos on electrons. Procedures to reconstruct individual interactions, including a newly developed technique called ``brems flipping'', as well as the burst direction from an ensemble of interactions are described. Performance of the burst direction reconstruction is evaluated for supernovae happening at a distance of 10 kpc for a specific supernova burst flux model. The pointing resolution is found to be 3.4 degrees at 68% coverage for a perfect interaction-channel classification and a fiducial mass of 40 kton, and 6.6 degrees for a 10 kton fiducial mass respectively. Assuming a 4% rate of charged-current interactions being misidentified as elastic scattering, DUNE's burst pointing resolution is found to be 4.3 degrees (8.7 degrees) at 68% coverage., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures

Abstract: Spectral densities connect correlation functions computed in quantum field theory to observables measured in experiments. For strongly-interacting theories, their non-perturbative determinations from lattice simulations are therefore of primary importance. They entail the inverse Laplace transform of correlation functions calculated in Euclidean time. By making use of the Mellin transform, we derive explicit analytic formulae to define spectral densities from the time dependence of correlation functions, both in the continuum and on the lattice. The generalization to smeared spectral densities turns out to be straightforward. Abstract: We present the findings of a study based on a new inelastic electron-scattering experiment on the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}$ nucleus focusing on the kinematic region of $Q^2=0.8\,\mathrm{GeV}^2/{c}^2$. The measured cross section is sensitive to the transverse response function and provides a stringent test of theoretical models, as well as of the theoretical assumptions made in Monte-Carlo event-generator codes developed for the interpretation of neutrino-nucleus experiments, such as DUNE and HyperK. We find that modern generators such as GENIE and GiBUU reproduce our new experimental data within 10$\%$.

Abstract: We explore alternative formulations of the analogy between viable Horndeski gravity and Eckart's first-order thermodynamics. We single out a class of identifications for the effective stress-energy tensor of the scalar field fluid that, upon performing the imperfect fluid decomposition, yields constitutive relations that can be mapped onto Eckart's theory. We then investigate how different couplings to Einstein's gravity, at the level of the field equations, can affect the thermodynamic formalism overall. 14. The dynamical age of the LMC globular cluster NGC 1835 using the 'dynamical clock'

Abstract: In the context of the study of the size-age relationship observed in star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud and the investigation of its origin, here we present the determination of the structural parameters and the dynamical age of the massive cluster NGC 1835. We have used a powerful combination of optical and near-ultraviolet images acquired with the WFC3 onboard the HST to construct the star density profile from resolved star counts, determining the values of the core, half-mass and tidal radii through the comparison with the King model family. The same data also allowed us to evaluate the dynamical age of the cluster by using the 'dynamical clock'. This is an empirical method that quantifies the level of central segregation of blue stragglers stars (BSSs) within the cluster half-mass radius by means of the A+ parameter, which is defined as the area enclosed between the cumulative radial distribution of BSSs and that of a reference (lighter) population. The results confirm that NGC 1835 is a very compact cluster with a core radius of only 0.84 pc. The estimated value of A+ ($0.30\pm 0.04$) is the largest measured so far in the LMC clusters, providing evidence of a highly dynamically evolved stellar system. NGC 1835 nicely fits into the correlation between A+ and the central relaxation time and in the anti-correlation between A+ and the core radius defined by the Galactic and the Magellanic Cloud clusters investigated to date., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

15. Baryonic screening masses in QCD at high temperature

Abstract: We compute the baryonic screening masses with nucleon quantum numbers and its negative parity partner in thermal QCD with $N_f=3$ massless quarks for a wide range of temperatures, from $T \sim 1$ GeV up to $\sim 160$ GeV. The computation is performed by Monte Carlo simulations of lattice QCD with $O(a)$-improved Wilson fermions by exploiting a recently proposed strategy to study non-perturbatively QCD at very high temperature. Very large spatial extensions are considered in order to have negligible finite volume effects. For each temperature we have simulated $3$ or $4$ values of the lattice spacing, so as to perform the continuum limit extrapolation with confidence at a few permille accuracy. The degeneracy of the positive and negative parity-state screening masses, expected from Ward identities associated to non-singlet axial transformations, provides further evidence for the restoration of chiral symmetry in the high temperature regime of QCD. In the entire range of temperatures explored, the baryonic masses deviate from the free theory result, $3 \pi T$, by $4$-$8\%$. 17. Resource-Aware Collaborative Monte Carlo Localization with Distribution Compression

Abstract: Global localization is essential in enabling robot autonomy, and collaborative localization is key for multi-robot systems. In this paper, we address the task of collaborative global localization under computational and communication constraints. We propose a method which reduces the amount of information exchanged and the computational cost. We also analyze, implement and open-source seminal approaches, which we believe to be a valuable contribution to the community. We exploit techniques for distribution compression in near-linear time, with error guarantees. We evaluate our approach and the implemented baselines on multiple challenging scenarios, simulated and real-world. Our approach can run online on an onboard computer. 18. Predicting the Intention to Interact with a Service Robot:the Role of Gaze Cues

Abstract: For a service robot, it is crucial to perceive as early as possible that an approaching person intends to interact: in this case, it can proactively enact friendly behaviors that lead to an improved user experience. We solve this perception task with a sequence-to-sequence classifier of a potential user intention to interact, which can be trained in a self-supervised way. Our main contribution is a study of the benefit of features representing the person's gaze in this context. Extensive experiments on a novel dataset show that the inclusion of gaze cues significantly improves the classifier performance (AUROC increases from 84.5% to 91.2%); the distance at which an accurate classification can be achieved improves from 2.4 m to 3.2 m. 19. Determination of nuclear matter radii by means of microscopic optical potentials: the case of $^{78}$Kr

Abstract: In this work we use microscopic Nucleon-Nucleus Optical Potentials (OP) to analyze elastic scattering data for the differential cross section of the $^{78}$Kr (p,p) $^{78}$Kr reaction, with the goal of extracting the matter radius and estimating the neutron skin, quantities that are both needed to determine the slope parameter $L$ of the nuclear symmetry energy. Our analysis is performed with the factorized version of the microscopic OP obtained in a previous series of papers within the Watson multiple scattering theory at the first order of the spectator expansion, which is based on the underlying nucleon-nucleon dynamics and is free from phenomenological inputs. Differently from our previous applications, the proton and neutron densities are described with a two-parameter Fermi (2pF) distribution, which makes the extraction of the matter radius easier and allows us to make a meaningful comparison with the original analysis, that was performed with the Glauber model. With standard minimization techniques we performed data analysis and extracted the matter radius and the neutron skin. Our analysis produces a matter radius of $R_m^{{\rm (rms)}} = 4.12$ fm, in good agreement with previous matter radii extracted from $^{76}$Kr and $^{80}$Kr, and a neutron skin of $\Delta R_{np} \simeq - 0.1$ fm, compatible with a previous analysis. Our factorized microscopic OP, supplied with 2pF densities, is a valuable tool to perform the analysis of the experimental differential cross section and extract information such as matter radius and neutron skin. Without any free parameters it provides a reasonably good description of the experimental differential cross section for scattering angles up to $\approx$ 40 degrees. Compared to the Glauber model our OP can be applied to a wider range of scattering angles and allows one to probe the nuclear systems in a more internal region.

20. Digital twin model of colon electromechanics for manometry prediction of laser tissue soldering

Abstract: The present study introduces an advanced multi-physics and multi-scale modeling approach to investigate in silico colon motility. We introduce a generalized electromechanical framework, integrating cellular electrophysiology and smooth muscle contractility, thus advancing a first-of-its-kind computational model of laser tissue soldering after incision resection. The proposed theoretical framework comprises three main elements: a microstructural material model describing intestine wall geometry and composition of reinforcing fibers, with four fiber families, two active-conductive and two passive; an electrophysiological model describing the propagation of slow waves, based on a fully-coupled nonlinear phenomenological approach; and a thermodynamical consistent mechanical model describing the hyperelastic energetic contributions ruling tissue equilibrium under diverse loading conditions. The active strain approach was adopted to describe tissue electromechanics by exploiting the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient for each active fiber family and solving the governing equations via a staggered finite element scheme. The computational framework was fine-tuned according to state-of-the-art experimental evidence, and extensive numerical analyses allowed us to compare manometric traces computed via numerical simulations with those obtained clinically in human patients. The model proved capable of reproducing both qualitatively and quantitatively high or low-amplitude propagation contractions. Colon motility after laser tissue soldering demonstrates that material properties and couplings of the deposited tissue are critical to reproducing a physiological muscular contraction, thus restoring a proper peristaltic activity.

21. Eulerian magnitude homology: subgraph structure and random graphs

Abstract: In this paper we explore the connection between the ranks of the magnitude homology groups of a graph and the structure of its subgraphs. To this end, we introduce variants of magnitude homology called eulerian magnitude homology and discriminant magnitude homology. Leveraging the combinatorics of the differential in magnitude homology, we illustrate a close relationship between the ranks of the eulerian magnitude homology groups on the first diagonal and counts of subgraphs which fall in specific classes. We leverage these tools to study limiting behavior of the eulerian magnitude homology groups for Erdos-Renyi random graphs and random geometric graphs, producing for both models a vanishing threshold for the eulerian magnitude homology groups on the first diagonal. This in turn provides a characterization of the generators for the corresponding magnitude homology groups. 22. On-device Self-supervised Learning of Visual Perception Tasks aboard Hardware-limited Nano-quadrotors

Abstract: Sub-\SI{50}{\gram} nano-drones are gaining momentum in both academia and industry. Their most compelling applications rely on onboard deep learning models for perception despite severe hardware constraints (\ie sub-\SI{100}{\milli\watt} processor). When deployed in unknown environments not represented in the training data, these models often underperform due to domain shift. To cope with this fundamental problem, we propose, for the first time, on-device learning aboard nano-drones, where the first part of the in-field mission is dedicated to self-supervised fine-tuning of a pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN). Leveraging a real-world vision-based regression task, we thoroughly explore performance-cost trade-offs of the fine-tuning phase along three axes: \textit{i}) dataset size (more data increases the regression performance but requires more memory and longer computation); \textit{ii}) methodologies (\eg fine-tuning all model parameters vs. only a subset); and \textit{iii}) self-supervision strategy. Our approach demonstrates an improvement in mean absolute error up to 30\% compared to the pre-trained baseline, requiring only \SI{22}{\second} fine-tuning on an ultra-low-power GWT GAP9 System-on-Chip. Abstract: The Module-0 Demonstrator is a single-phase 600 kg liquid argon time projection chamber operated as a prototype for the DUNE liquid argon near detector. Based on the ArgonCube design concept, Module-0 features a novel 80k-channel pixelated charge readout and advanced high-coverage photon detection system. In this paper, we present an analysis of an eight-day data set consisting of 25 million cosmic ray events collected in the spring of 2021. We use this sample to demonstrate the imaging performance of the charge and light readout systems as well as the signal correlations between the two. 24. Discovery of an extended Horizontal Branch in the Large Magellanic Cloud globular cluster NGC1835

Abstract: We present a high angular resolution multi-wavelength study of the massive globular cluster NGC 1835 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Thanks to a combination of optical and near ultraviolet images acquired with the WFC3 on board the HST, we performed a detailed inspection of the stellar population in this stellar system adopting a ``UV-guided search'' to optimize the detection of relatively hot stars. This allowed us to discover a remarkably extended horizontal branch (HB), spanning more than 4.5 magnitudes in both magnitude and colour from the region redder than the instability strip, up to effective temperatures of 30,000 K, and including a large population of RR Lyrae (67 confirmed variables, and 52 new candidates). This is the first time that such a feature has been detected in an extra-Galactic cluster, demonstrating that the physical conditions responsible for the formation of extended HBs are ubiquitous. The acquired dataset has been also used to redetermine the cluster distance modulus, reddening, and absolute age, yielding $(m-M)_0=18.58$, $E(B-V)=0.08$, and $t=12.5$ Gyr, respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

25. High-throughput Visual Nano-drone to Nano-drone Relative Localization using Onboard Fully Convolutional Networks

Abstract: Relative drone-to-drone localization is a fundamental building block for any swarm operations. We address this task in the context of miniaturized nano-drones, i.e., 10cm in diameter, which show an ever-growing interest due to novel use cases enabled by their reduced form factor. The price for their versatility comes with limited onboard resources, i.e., sensors, processing units, and memory, which limits the complexity of the onboard algorithms. A traditional solution to overcome these limitations is represented by lightweight deep learning models directly deployed aboard nano-drones. This work tackles the challenging relative pose estimation between nano-drones using only a gray-scale low-resolution camera and an ultra-low-power System-on-Chip (SoC) hosted onboard. We present a vertically integrated system based on a novel vision-based fully convolutional neural network (FCNN), which runs at 39Hz within 101mW onboard a Crazyflie nano-drone extended with the GWT GAP8 SoC. We compare our FCNN against three State-of-the-Art (SoA) systems. Considering the best-performing SoA approach, our model results in an R-squared improvement from 32 to 47% on the horizontal image coordinate and from 18 to 55% on the vertical image coordinate, on a real-world dataset of 30k images. Finally, our in-field tests show a reduction of the average tracking error of 37% compared to a previous SoA work and an endurance performance up to the entire battery lifetime of 4 minutes., Comment: ICRA 2024, IEEE Conference

26. Global Fit of Electron and Neutrino Elastic Scattering Data to Determine the Strange Quark Contribution to the Vector and Axial Form Factors of the Nucleon

Abstract: We present a global fit of neutral-current elastic (NCE) neutrino-scattering data and parity-violating electron-scattering (PVES) data with the goal of determining the strange quark contribution to the vector and axial form factors of the proton. Previous fits of this form included data from a variety of PVES experiments (PVA4, HAPPEx, G0, SAMPLE) and the NCE neutrino and anti-neutrino data from BNL E734. These fits did not constrain the strangeness contribution to the axial form factor $G_A^s(Q^2)$ at low $Q^2$ very well because there was no NCE data for $Q^2<0.45$ GeV$^2$. Our new fit includes for the first time MiniBooNE NCE data from both neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering; this experiment used a hydrocarbon target and so a model of the neutrino interaction with the carbon nucleus was required. Three different nuclear models have been employed: a relativistic Fermi gas model, the SuperScaling Approximation model, and a spectral function model. We find a tremendous improvement in the constraint of $G_A^s(Q^2)$ at low $Q^2$ compared to previous work, although more data is needed from NCE measurements that focus on exclusive single-proton final states, for example from MicroBooNE., Comment: Revised in light of referee comments; now accepted for publication in Physical Review D

27. Self-Supervised Learning of Visual Robot Localization Using LED State Prediction as a Pretext Task

Abstract: We propose a novel self-supervised approach for learning to visually localize robots equipped with controllable LEDs. We rely on a few training samples labeled with position ground truth and many training samples in which only the LED state is known, whose collection is cheap. We show that using LED state prediction as a pretext task significantly helps to learn the visual localization end task. The resulting model does not require knowledge of LED states during inference. We instantiate the approach to visual relative localization of nano-quadrotors: experimental results show that using our pretext task significantly improves localization accuracy (from 68.3% to 76.2%) and outperforms alternative strategies, such as a supervised baseline, model pre-training, and an autoencoding pretext task. We deploy our model aboard a 27-g Crazyflie nano-drone, running at 21 fps, in a position-tracking task of a peer nano-drone. Our approach, relying on position labels for only 300 images, yields a mean tracking error of 4.2 cm versus 11.9 cm of a supervised baseline model trained without our pretext task. 28. Topological Neural Networks: Mitigating the Bottlenecks of Graph Neural Networks via Higher-Order Interactions

Abstract: The irreducible complexity of natural phenomena has led Graph Neural Networks to be employed as a standard model to perform representation learning tasks on graph-structured data. While their capacity to capture local and global patterns is remarkable, the implications associated with long-range and higher-order dependencies pose considerable challenges to such models. This work starts with a theoretical framework to reveal the impact of network's width, depth, and graph topology on the over-squashing phenomena in message-passing neural networks. Then, the work drifts towards, higher-order interactions and multi-relational inductive biases via Topological Neural Networks. Such models propagate messages through higher-dimensional structures, providing shortcuts or additional routes for information flow. With this construction, the underlying computational graph is no longer coupled with the input graph structure, thus mitigating the aforementioned bottlenecks while accounting also for higher-order interactions. Inspired by Graph Attention Networks, two topological attention networks are proposed: Simplicial and Cell Attention Networks. The rationale behind these architecture is to leverage the extended notion of neighbourhoods provided by the arrangement of groups of nodes within a simplicial or cell complex to design anisotropic aggregations able to measure the importance of the information coming from different regions of the domain. By doing so, they capture dependencies that conventional Graph Neural Networks might miss. Abstract: Recently, a non-linear model of viscoelasticity based on Rational Extended Thermodynamics was proposed in [arXiv:2312.05116]. This theory extends the evolution of the viscous stress beyond the linear framework of the Maxwell model to the non-linear realm, provided that the viscous energy function is given. This work aims at establishing a possible constitutive law for the viscous energy such that the relaxation modulus of the fractional Maxwell model of order $\alpha \in (1/2, 1]$ is contained within the solutions of the (non-linear) relaxation experiment. Abstract: Doping of liquid argon TPCs (LArTPCs) with a small concentration of xenon is a technique for light-shifting and facilitates the detection of the liquid argon scintillation light. In this paper, we present the results of the first doping test ever performed in a kiloton-scale LArTPC. From February to May 2020, we carried out this special run in the single-phase DUNE Far Detector prototype (ProtoDUNE-SP) at CERN, featuring 720 t of total liquid argon mass with 410 t of fiducial mass. A 5.4 ppm nitrogen contamination was present during the xenon doping campaign. The goal of the run was to measure the light and charge response of the detector to the addition of xenon, up to a concentration of 18.8 ppm. The main purpose was to test the possibility for reduction of non-uniformities in light collection, caused by deployment of photon detectors only within the anode planes. Light collection was analysed as a function of the xenon concentration, by using the pre-existing photon detection system (PDS) of ProtoDUNE-SP and an additional smaller set-up installed specifically for this run. In this paper we first summarize our current understanding of the argon-xenon energy transfer process and the impact of the presence of nitrogen in argon with and without xenon dopant. We then describe the key elements of ProtoDUNE-SP and the injection method deployed. Two dedicated photon detectors were able to collect the light produced by xenon and the total light. The ratio of these components was measured to be about 0.65 as 18.8 ppm of xenon were injected. We performed studies of the collection efficiency as a function of the distance between tracks and light detectors, demonstrating enhanced uniformity of response for the anode-mounted PDS. Abstract: The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab searches for the neutrino-less conversion of a negative muon into an electron, with a distinctive signature of a mono-energetic electron with energy of 104.967 MeV. The calorimeter is made of two disks of pure CsI crystals, each read out by two custom large area UV-extended SiPMs. It plays a fundamental role in providing excellent particle identification capabilities and an online trigger filter while improving the track reconstruction, requiring better than 10% energy and 500 ps timing resolutions for 100 MeV electrons. In this paper, we present the status of construction and the Quality Control (QC) performed on the produced crystals and photosensors, the development of the rad-hard electronics, and the most important results of the irradiation tests. Construction of the mechanics is also reported. Status and plans for the calorimeter assembly and its first commissioning are described.

32. First-order thermodynamics of Horndeski cosmology

Abstract: We delve into the first-order thermodynamics of Horndeski gravity, focusing on spatially flat, homogeneous, and isotropic cosmologies. Our exploration begins with a comprehensive review of the effective fluid representation within viable Horndeski gravity. Notably, we uncover a surprising alignment between the constitutive relations governing the "Horndeski fluid" and those of Eckart's thermodynamics. Narrowing our focus, we specialize our discussion to spatially flat Friedmann-Lema{\^i}tre-Robertson-Walker spacetimes. Within this specific cosmological framework, we systematically analyze two classes of theories: shift-symmetric and asymptotically shift-symmetric. These theories are characterized by a non-vanishing braiding parameter, adding a nuanced dimension to our investigation. On the one hand, unlike the case of the "traditional" scalar-tensor gravity, these peculiar subclasses of viable Horndeski gravity never relax to General Relativity (seen within this formalism as an equilibrium state at zero temperature), but give rise to additional equilibrium states with non-vanishing viscosity. On the other hand, this analysis further confirms previous findings according to which curvature singularities are "hot" and exhibit a diverging temperature, which suggests that deviations of scalar-tensor theories from General Relativity become extreme at spacetime singularities. Furthermore, we provide a novel exact cosmological solution for an asymptotically shift-symmetric theory as a toy model for our thermodynamic analysis., Comment: 16 pages. 38. Microscopic Optical Potentials from Chiral Forces and Ab Initio Nuclear Densities

Abstract: We derived microscopic optical potentials (OPs) for elastic nucleon-nucleus scattering within the framework of chiral effective field theories at the first-order term of the spectator expansion of the Watson multiple-scattering theory and adopting the impulse approximation. Our OPs are derived by folding ab initio nuclear densities with a nucleon-nucleon NN t matrix computed with a consistent chiral interaction. The results of our OPs are in good agreement with the experimental data. 39. Progresses on high-temperature QCD: Equation of State and energy-momentum tensor

Abstract: We present first non-perturbative results for the renormalization constants of the QCD energy-momentum tensor, based on the framework of thermal QCD with shifted and twisted (for quarks only) boundary conditions in the compact direction. We also show preliminary results for the entropy density obtained with the very same numerical strategy. 40. A Sim-to-Real Deep Learning-based Framework for Autonomous Nano-drone Racing

Abstract: Autonomous drone racing competitions are a proxy to improve unmanned aerial vehicles' perception, planning, and control skills. The recent emergence of autonomous nano-sized drone racing imposes new challenges, as their ~10cm form factor heavily restricts the resources available onboard, including memory, computation, and sensors. This paper describes the methodology and technical implementation of the system winning the first autonomous nano-drone racing international competition: the IMAV 2022 Nanocopter AI Challenge. We developed a fully onboard deep learning approach for visual navigation trained only on simulation images to achieve this goal. Our approach includes a convolutional neural network for obstacle avoidance, a sim-to-real dataset collection procedure, and a navigation policy that we selected, characterized, and adapted through simulation and actual in-field experiments. Our system ranked 1st among seven competing teams at the competition. In our best attempt, we scored 115m of traveled distance in the allotted 5-minute flight, never crashing while dodging static and dynamic obstacles. Abstract: DUNE is an international experiment dedicated to addressing some of the questions at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics, including the mystifying preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe. The dual-site experiment will employ an intense neutrino beam focused on a near and a far detector as it aims to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and to make high-precision measurements of the PMNS matrix parameters, including the CP-violating phase. It will also stand ready to observe supernova neutrino bursts, and seeks to observe nucleon decay as a signature of a grand unified theory underlying the standard model. The DUNE far detector implements liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) technology, and combines the many tens-of-kiloton fiducial mass necessary for rare event searches with the sub-centimeter spatial resolution required to image those events with high precision. The addition of a photon detection system enhances physics capabilities for all DUNE physics drivers and opens prospects for further physics explorations. Given its size, the far detector will be implemented as a set of modules, with LArTPC designs that differ from one another as newer technologies arise. In the vertical drift LArTPC design, a horizontal cathode bisects the detector, creating two stacked drift volumes in which ionization charges drift towards anodes at either the top or bottom. The anodes are composed of perforated PCB layers with conductive strips, enabling reconstruction in 3D. Light-trap-style photon detection modules are placed both on the cryostat's side walls and on the central cathode where they are optically powered. Abstract: The ratio of the transverse and longitudinal component of polarization transfer to protons in quasi-elastic $(\vec{e}, e^{\prime} \vec{p}\,)$ reaction, $P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z$, is sensitive to the proton's electromagnetic form factor ratio, $G_E/G_M$. To explore density-dependent in-medium modifications, a comparison of polarization transfer ratios involving protons from distinct nuclear shells, each with different local nuclear densities, has been proposed. In this study, we present such comparisons between four shells, $1s_{1/2}$, $1p_{3/2}$ in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ and $1d_{3/2}$, $2s_{1/2}$ in $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$. In an effort to account for other many-body effects that may differ between shells, we use state-of-the-art relativistic distorted-wave impulse-approximation (RDWIA) calculation and present the double ratios, $(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm Data}/(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm RDWIA}$ as well as the super ratios, $\left[(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm A}/(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm B}\right]_{\rm Data}/\left[(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm A}/(P^{\prime}_x/P^{\prime}_z)_{\rm B}\right]_{\rm RDWIA}$, for chosen shells A and B, as a function of effective local nuclear densities. We find that double ratios for individual shells show a dependence on the probed effective nuclear densities. Studying the ratios, we observed a systematic variation between pairs of higher- and lower-density shells.

Abstract: Hadronic spectral densities play a pivotal role in particle physics, a prime example being the R-ratio defined from electron-positron scattering into hadrons. To predict them from first principles using Lattice QCD, we face a numerically ill-posed inverse problem, due to the Euclidean signature adopted in practical simulations. Here we present a recent numerical analysis of the vector isovector spectral density extracted using the multi-level algorithm (recently extended also to the case of dynamical fermions) and discuss its implications., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Abstract: In the cuprates, the opening of a d-wave superconducting (SC) gap is accompanied by a redistribution of spectral weight at energies two orders of magnitude larger than this gap. This indicates the importance to the pairing mechanism of on-site electronic excitations, such as orbital transitions or charge transfer excitations. Here, we resort to a three-pulse pump-probe scheme to study the broadband non-equilibrium dielectric function in optimally-doped $Bi_2Sr_2Ca_{0.92}Y_{0.08}Cu_2O_{8+{\delta}}$ and we identify two distinct dynamical responses: i) a blueshift of the central energy of an interband excitation peaked at 2 eV and ii) a change in spectral weight in the same energy range. Photoexcitation with near-IR and mid-IR pulses, with photon energies respectively above and below the SC gap, reveals that the transient changes in the central energy are not modified by the onset of superconductivity and do not depend on the pump photon energy. Conversely, the spectral weight dynamics strongly depends on the pump photon energy and has a discontinuity at the critical temperature. The picture that emerges is that, while high-energy pulses excite quasiparticles in both nodal and thermally inaccessible antinodal states, photoexcitation by low-energy pulses mostly accelerates the condensate and creates excitations predominantly at the nodes of the SC gap. These results, rationalized by kinetic equations for d-wave superconducting gaps, indicate that dynamical control of the momentum-dependent distribution of non-thermal quasiparticles may be achieved by the selective tuning of the photoexcitation.

Abstract: We study different entropies for coherent states representing the geometry of spherically symmetric compact systems. We show that the thermodynamic entropy reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking result in the presence of thermal modes at the Hawking temperature if the object is a black hole and saturates the Bekenstein bound for more general compact objects. 50. A K\'ummer construction for Chern-Ricci flat balanced manifolds

Abstract: Given a non-K\"ahler Calabi-Yau orbifold with a finite family of isolated singularities endowed with a Chern-Ricci flat balanced metric, we show, via a gluing construction, that all its crepant resolutions admit Chern-Ricci flat balanced metrics, and discuss applications to the search of solutions for the Hull-Strominger system. We also describe the scenario of singular threefolds with ordinary double points, and see that similarly is possible to obtain balanced approximately Chern-Ricci flat metrics., Comment: 30 pages.
