Triglyceride profile of seed oil samples from 32 hybrid grape varieties not studied before was investigated. A new method for the analysis of triacylglycerols (TAGs) has been developed based on the direct infusion in the electrospray ionization (ESI) source and employing tetrahydrofuran/methanol/ water (85:10:5 v|v|v) as solvent; the formation of [M + Na]+ ions in high yield has been observed. TAGs were identified by ESI-tandem mass spectrometry analysis, and the matrix-assisted-laser-desorption-ionization and time-of-flight profile of samples was determined. Six were the principal TAGs identified in seed oil: trilinolein (LLL) was the most abundant (43%), followed by dilinoleoyl-oleoylglycerol (LOL, 23%), and dilinoleoyl-palmitoylglycerol (LPL, 15%). Compounds present in lower concentration were LSL and LOO (11%), LOP (6%), and LSP (2%). Compared with seed oils produced from V. Vinifera grapes, some significant differences in the relative abundances of TAGs were found, in particular hybrid grape seed oils showed higher LOL and lower LPL content, respectively. Among the samples studied, a particularly high content of LLL (rich in unsaturated fatty acids) was found in seed oils from two red varieties

- Abstract
Flesh firmness is a sensory characteristic proposed by Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin (OIV) as an ampelographic descriptor for grape varieties and Vitis species (OIV code 235). To accurately define the flesh firmness of table grapes, an instrumental texture parameter that makes it possible to classify the five reference table-grape cultivars according to this descriptor was selected. The mechanical properties of the berry flesh were determined by texture profile analysis and cutting tests. The results showed that the berry hardness and gumminess, normalized by berry diameter, are accurate instrumental indicators of flesh firmness because the variations among the cultivars were evident, independently of berry size and maturity grade. The interquartile ranges of berry hardness normalized by berry diameter for each flesh-firmness group established by OIV (soft, slightly firm, very firm) were 0.074 to 0.117, 0.121 to 0.158, and 0.205 to 0.391 N/mm, respectively. This standardized protocol can be applied to better compare the performance of grape varieties.

- Abstract

Background and Aims Molecular synonyms need to be confirmed by ampelographic description. Preliminary molecular data showed that four accessions of CREA-Vit collection may correspond to the Sciaccarello cultivar; nevertheless, only one of them had normally developed seeds, whereas the others were seedless. This study aimed to identify these accessions and to assess the origin of the seedless types. Methods and Results An integrated molecular (23 simple sequence repeat markers) and ampelographic approach (70 Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin descriptors) was used. The four accessions showed the same molecular profile and belonged to Sciaccarello cépage. Morphological and phenological descriptors were in agreement with the conclusion inferred from the molecular data, with the seedless vines being somatic variants of the seeded cultivar Sciaccarello. The seedless accessions were shown to be parthenocarpic and mostly differed from the wild type in the traits related to the absence of seeds. Beyond the prominent differences in the bunch and berry morphology, the seedless variant commenced veraison and ripened about 1 week earlier than the accession with seeds. Conclusions Our results suggest that the seedless Termarina cultivar is a somatic variant of Sciaccarello cépage. Significance of the Study The study describes in detail another case of parthenocarpic variant in grapevine. Current knowledge about these types of variants is limited. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Grape seed extracts are known for their beneficial effects on health and on cardiovascular diseases due to antioxidant activity and the free radical-scavenging properties of proanthocyanidins (PAs). Moreover, grape seed tannins are used in oenology as additives to improve the organoleptic characteristics of wines, and for the clarification of must and wines. PAs in seed extract of 32 hybrid and three V. vinifera grape varieties were characterized by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Signals of 148 compounds were identified as [M+H]+, [M+Na]+ and [M+K]+ adducts of B-type and A-type PAs formed from catechin/epicatechin subunits up to undecamers and with galloylation degree 0-7. The number-average molecular weight (Mn) of the samples, a parameter correlated with the molecular weight of polymers, and the polyphenolic content of extract, were also determined. Profiles of the hybrid grape varieties were compared with those of three V. vinifera samples studied as references. 'Terzi 108-6' showed high content of antioxidant polyphenols and 'Seyve Villard 12-390' higher content of higher oligomers. These two grape varieties are therefore potentially very interesting as sources of antioxidants and tannins for nutraceutical and oenological uses., VITIS - Journal of Grapevine Research, Vol. 54 No. 3 (2015): Vitis

- Abstract
Background. Disability Management can be defined as a practice to improve workers? health and to reduce the impact and costs of disability. The aim of the study was to estimate the diffusion of DM in Italian companies. Methods. A survey was conducted using a questionnaire, the Worksite Disability Management Audit. The questionnaire was structured into five parts addressing the following domains: 1) characteristics of the company; 2) health promotion activities; 3) preventive measures; 4) case management; 5) disability manage- ment. We selected public and private companies and collected information by direct interview. Results. Twenty companies entered the survey. Twelve Com- panies (60%) indicated that health promotion programs and sensibilisation campaigns are usually carried out. The presence of an individual who provided workplace safety indications and materials was stated by 19 companies (95%). Periodical medical examinations are carried out by 19 companies (95%); 16 (80%) have an evaluation process for ergonomics concerns. Risk assessment and analysis are performed by all companies and the security procedures and policies are updated at least once in a year in 40% of cases. Health status monitoring of injured workers is performed in eight (40%)of the companies, while Disability Management is present as a whole in only three companies. Conclusions. This survey highlights that Disability Management is not undertaken in most companies and that, where applied, there is still confusion and disorganization about ways to pro- mote health and manage workers? illness and disability. Hence, there is still the need to promote an all-inclusive evaluation and management of workers? safety, illness and disabilities., Journal of Preventive Medicine and Hygiene, Vol 50, No 1 (2009)

- Abstract
This study uses PCR-derived marker systems to investigate the genetic differences of 22 grapevine accessions obtained through a self-fertilization program using Gaglioppo and Magliocco dolce. The aim of the study was to improve some qualitative parameters, while preserving the adaptive characteristics of these two cultivars to the adverse environmental conditions of the Calabria region (southern Italy). These two Calabrian grapevines have been cultivated within a restricted area and have been placed under a strong anthropic pressure which has limited their phenotypical variability with no selection of higher performant biotypes. Therefore, to have accessions with improved qualitative traits, a program of genetic improvement based on the self-fertilization of Gaglioppo and Magliocco dolce cultivars was performed in 1998, producing 3,122 accessions. Selection cycles were performed in 14 years. A first selection cycle (1998-2000), based on visual inspection of vegetative traits, selected 1,320 accessions, planted in an experimental vineyard in 2000. A second selection cycle (2000-2008), based on phenotypic traits, sanitary aspects, and chemical composition of the grapes, selected 42 accessions, planted in a new experimental vineyard in 2008. A final selection cycle (2008-2012), produced 22 accessions (virus free), with the best agronomic, sanitary, and qualitative aspects: two accessions obtained from Gaglioppo have been selected by color characteristics (i.e., anthocyanin total content and stability); 20 genotypes obtained from Magliocco dolce had a better macro-composition of the grape (i.e., good sugar content with a balanced acidity). SSR analyses were performed to check the self-fertilization process. The study of genetic differences between accessions was performed by AFLPs, SAMPLs, and M-AFLPs. The application of the above-mentioned techniques allowed both to discriminate molecularly the 22 accessions grouped these accessions according to their genetic similarity. The self-fertilization approach has enabled improvement in the quality of the grapes, while preserving the high degree of adaptation to the environment of these two native Calabrian cultivars in southern Italy.

- Abstract
Triglyceride profile of seed oil samples from 32 hybrid grape varieties not studied before was investigated. A new method for the analysis of triacylglycerols (TAGs) has been developed based on the direct infusion in the electrospray ionization (ESI) source and employing tetrahydrofuran/methanol/water (85:10:5 v|v|v) as solvent; the formation of [M + Na](+) ions in high yield has been observed. Among the samples studied, a particularly high content of LLL (rich in unsaturated fatty acids) was found in seed oils from two red varieties., (Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)
