Abstract: Abstract Lynch syndrome is rarely associated with rectal cancer (RC) and thus, metachronous RC has been scarcely investigated. This study aimed to analyze the mucosal immune microenvironment in sporadic and metachronous RC. We analyzed the mucosal immune microenvironment in the 25 metachronous RCs present in the IMMUNOREACT 1 and 2 multicentre observational studies (624 patients). A panel of immune markers was retrospectively investigated at immunohistochemistry: CD3, CD4, CD8, CD8b, Tbet, FoxP3, PD-L1, MSH6, and PMS2 and CD80. Single-cell suspensions were subjected to flow-cytometry to determine the proportion of epithelial cells (pan-cytokeratin) acting as antigen-presenting cells (expressing CD80, CD86, HLA-ABC) and the proportion of activated CD8 + T cells (CD8 + positive for CD28, CD38), inhibitory T cells (CD3 + CTLA-4+) of activated CD4 + T helper cells (CD4 + CD25+) and activated T regulatory cells (CD4 + CD25 + FoxP3+). No mismatch repair gene deficiencies were observed in the patients. The previous history of colorectal adenoma was significantly more frequent in metachronous RC. In healthy epithelial cells, HLA-ABC expression was significantly higher in patients with metachronous RC. In therapy-naïve metachronous RC patients, a significantly lower level of circulating lymphocytes and CD3 + T-cell infiltration in the healthy mucosa surrounding the RC was observed compared to patients with non-metachronous cancer. Our study supports the hypothesis that metachronous RC can occur in a cancerization field in patients with weak systemic and local immune systems. The peculiar site of RC makes the mismatch-repair genes deficiency in metachronous cancer onset less relevant.

Abstract: Abstract Controlling crystal growth alignment in low-dimensional perovskites (LDPs) for solar cells has been a persistent challenge, especially for low-n LDPs (n 1.7 eV) impeding charge flow. Here we overcome such transport limits by inducing vertical crystal growth through the addition of chlorine to the precursor solution. In contrast to 3D halide perovskites (APbX3), we find that Cl substitutes I in the equatorial position of the unit cell, inducing a vertical strain in the perovskite octahedra, and is critical for initiating vertical growth. Atomistic modelling demonstrates the thermodynamic stability and miscibility of Cl/I structures indicating the preferential arrangement for Cl-incorporation at I-sites. Vertical alignment persists at the solar cell level, giving rise to a record 9.4% power conversion efficiency with a 1.4 V open circuit voltage, the highest reported for a 2 eV wide band gap device. This study demonstrates an atomic-level understanding of crystal tunability in low-n LDPs and unlocks new device possibilities for smart solar facades and indoor energy generation.

Abstract: Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract: Summary: The distinct folding accompanied by its polymorphic character renders DNA G-quadruplexes promising biomolecular building blocks to construct novel DNA-based and supramolecular assemblies. However, the highly polar nature of DNA limits the use of G-quadruplexes to water as a solvent. In addition, the archetypical G-quadruplex fold needs to be stabilized by metal-cations, which is usually a potassium ion. Here, we show that a noncovalent PEGylation process enabled by electrostatic interactions allows the first metal-free G-quadruplexes in organic solvents. Strikingly, incorporation of an iron-containing porphyrin renders the self-assembled metal-free G-quadruplex catalytically active in organic solvents. Hence, these “supraG4zymes” enable DNA-based catalysis in organic media. The results will allow the broad utilization of DNA G-quadruplexes in nonaqueous environments.

Abstract: Agenesis of the gallbladder (AGB) without extrahepatic biliary atresia is a rare congenital disease. Ultrasound (US) examination can be misleading and reveal a contracted shrunken gallbladder when there is not any and the patient in most cases is taken to the OR for a standard cholecystectomy. We describe the case of a 54-year-old female with colicky right upper abdominal pain with nausea. US revealed a contracted scleroatrophic gallbladder and the patient was listed for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. At laparoscopy, despite careful search, the gallbladder was never visualised, and the suspicion of AGB was raised. An intra-operative cholangiography confirmed the hypothesis. The post-operative recovery was uneventful, and abdominal computed tomography scan failed to show the presence of gallbladder, therefore confirming the diagnosis of AGB. Lack of awareness of this condition among radiologists and surgeons is the main reason for unnecessary operations and potentially damages to the biliary tract.

Abstract: Abstract Organic field‐effect transistors (OFETs) are considered almost purely interfacial devices with charge current mainly confined in the first two semiconducting layers in contact with the dielectric with no active role of the film thickness exceeding six to eight monolayers (MLs). By a combined electronic, morphological, structural, and theoretical investigation, it is demonstrated that the charge mobility and source–drain current in 2,20‐(2,20‐bithiophene‐5,50‐diyl)bis(5‐butyl‐5H‐thieno[2,3‐c]pyrrole‐4,6)‐dione (NT4N) organic transistors directly correlate with the out‐of‐plane domain size and crystallite orientation in the vertical direction, well beyond the dielectric interfacial layers. Polycrystalline films with thickness as high as 75 nm (≈30 MLs) and 3D molecular architecture provide the best electrical and optoelectronic OFET characteristics, highlighting that the molecular orientational order in the bulk of the film is the key‐enabling factor for optimum device performance. X‐ray scattering analysis and multiscale simulations reveal the functional correlation between the thickness‐dependent molecular packing, electron mobility, and vertical charge distribution. These results call for a broader view of the fundamental mechanisms that govern field‐effect charge transport in OFETs beyond the interfacial 2D paradigm and demonstrate the unexpected role of the out‐of‐plane domain size and crystallite orientation in polycrystalline films to achieve optimum electronic and optoelectronic properties in organic transistors.

Abstract: Engineering the electrical properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) holds great potential for various applications such as sensors, thermoelectric (TE) generators, and hole transport layers in solar cells. Various strategies have been applied to achieve optimal electrical properties, including base solution post-treatments. However, the working mechanism and the exact details of the structural transformations induced by base post-treatments are still unclear. In this work, we present a comparative study on the post-treatment effects of using three common and green alkali base solutions: namely LiOH, NaOH, and KOH. The structural modifications induced in the film by the base post-treatments are studied by techniques including atomic force microscopy, grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering, ultraviolet–visible–near-infrared spectroscopy, and attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Base-induced structural modifications are responsible for an improvement in the TE power factor of the films, which depends on the basic solution used. The results are explained on the basis of the different affinity between the alkali cations and the PSS chains, which determines PEDOT dedoping. The results presented here shed light on the structural reorganization occurring in PEDOT:PSS when exposed to high-pH solutions and may serve as inspiration to create future pH-/ion-responsive devices for various applications.

Abstract: Metal borides, a class of materials intensively used in industry as superconductors, magnetic materials, or hot cathodes, remain largely unexplored at the nanoscale mainly due to the difficulty in synthesizing single-phase nanocrystals. Recent works have shown that synthetic methods at lower temperatures (xB) could be a potential catalyst for a broad range of applications (hydrogenations, electrochemical hydrogen, and oxygen evolution reactions) under challenging conditions (such as high pH or high temperatures). Here, we report a novel solid-state method to synthesize NixB nanopowders (with a diameter of approximately 45 nm) and their conversion into colloidal suspensions (inks) through treatment of the nanocrystal surface. For the solid-state synthesis, we used commercially available salts and explored the reaction between the Ni and B sources while varying the synthetic parameters under mild and solvent-free reaction conditions. We show that pure phase Ni3B and Ni2B NCs can be obtained with high yield in the pure phase using as precursors NiCl2 and Ni, respectively. Through extensive mechanistic studies, we show that Ni nanoclusters (1-2 nm) are an intermediate in the boriding process, while the metal co-reactant lowers the decomposition temperature of NaBH4 (used as a reducing agent and B source). Size control can instead be exerted through reaction mediators, as seen from the differential nucleation and growth of Ni (clusters) or NixB NCs when employing L- (amine, phosphine) and X-type (carboxylate) mediators. Applying surface engineering methods to our NixB NCs, we stabilized them with inorganic (NOBF4) or organic (borane tert-butyl amine, oleylamine) ligands in the appropriate solvent (DMSO, hexane). With this method, we produce stable inks for further solution processing applications. Our results provide tools for further development of catalysts based on NixB NCs and pave the way for synthesizing other metal boride colloidal nanostructures.

Abstract: Keratin is an important byproduct of the animal industry, but almost all of it ends up in landfills due to a lack of efficient recycling methods. To make better use of keratin-based natural resources, the current extraction and processing strategies need to be improved or replaced by more sustainable and cost-effective processes. Here, we developed a simple and environmentally benign method to process extracted keratin, using HCl to induce the formation of a coacervate, a separate aqueous phase with a very high protein concentration. Remarkably, this pH-induced coacervation did not result in the denaturation of keratin, and we could even observe an increase in the amount of ordered secondary structures. The low-pH coacervates could be extruded and wet-spun into high-performance keratin fibers, without requiring heating or any organic solvents. The secondary structure of keratin was largely conserved in these regenerated fibers, which exhibited excellent mechanical performance. The process developed in this study represents a simple and environmentally friendly strategy to upcycle waste keratin into high-performance materials.

Abstract: The identification of high-risk patients in the early stages of infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN) is critical, because it could help the clinicians to adopt more effective management strategies. We conducted a post hoc analysis of the MANCTRA-1 international study to assess the association between clinical risk factors and mortality among adult patients with IPN. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify prognostic factors of mortality. We identified 247 consecutive patients with IPN hospitalised between January 2019 and December 2020. History of uncontrolled arterial hypertension (p = 0.032; 95% CI 1.135–15.882; aOR 4.245), qSOFA (p = 0.005; 95% CI 1.359–5.879; aOR 2.828), renal failure (p = 0.022; 95% CI 1.138–5.442; aOR 2.489), and haemodynamic failure (p = 0.018; 95% CI 1.184–5.978; aOR 2.661), were identified as independent predictors of mortality in IPN patients. Cholangitis (p = 0.003; 95% CI 1.598–9.930; aOR 3.983), abdominal compartment syndrome (p = 0.032; 95% CI 1.090–6.967; aOR 2.735), and gastrointestinal/intra-abdominal bleeding (p = 0.009; 95% CI 1.286–5.712; aOR 2.710) were independently associated with the risk of mortality. Upfront open surgical necrosectomy was strongly associated with the risk of mortality (p p = 0.018; 95% CI 0.138–0.834; aOR 0.339) and enteral nutrition (p = 0.003; 95% CI 0.143–0.716; aOR 0.320) were found as protective factors. Organ failure, acute cholangitis, and upfront open surgical necrosectomy were the most significant predictors of mortality. Our study confirmed that, even in a subgroup of particularly ill patients such as those with IPN, upfront open surgery should be avoided as much as possible. Abstract: Keratin is one of the most abundant biopolymers, produced on a scale of millions of tons per year but often simply discarded as waste. Due to its abundance, biocompatibility, and excellent mechanical properties, there is an extremely high interest in developing protocols for the recycling of keratin and its conversion into protein-based materials. In this work, we describe a novel protocol for the conversion of keratin from wool into hybrid fibers. Our protocol uses a synthetic polyanion, which undergoes complex coacervation with keratin, leading to a viscous liquid phase that can be used directly as a dope for dry-spinning. The use of polyelectrolyte complexation allows us to use all of the extracted keratin, unlike previous works that were limited to the fraction with the highest molecular weight. The fibers prepared by this protocol show excellent mechanical properties, humidity responsiveness, and ion conductivity, which makes them promising candidates for applications as a strain sensor.

Abstract: Understanding the crystallization behavior of semi-crystalline polymers during processing is key to achieve the desired material performances. Isotactic polypropylene characteristics are highly tunable and easy to adjust by changing the processing conditions thanks to its structural versatility and polymorphic behavior. Hereby, we performed for the first time ever a challenging real-time X-ray characterization of isotactic polypropylene during the cast film extrusion process by interfacing a compact cast film extruder machine with a synchrotron line. We report data of excellent quality recorded from the contact point between the just extruded polymer melt and the water-refrigerated cooling roll further down to the cooling roll line by using a grazing incidence scattering geometry. The explored cooling roll temperatures (from 70 °C to 15 °C) allowed to produce iPP films with defined structural composition, from α to mesophase. Evolution of the phase crystallinity as a function of the contact time between the polymer melt and the cooling roll clearly shows the presence of three crystallization zones: 1) an amorphous zone, 2) a frostline zone and lastly 3) a high-crystallinity zone. In the end, the experimental data have been matched with simulated data using a simple crystallization kinetics model, finding a good agreement in terms of crystalline development over the investigated time scale. As a closing remark, we hope that our effort will spark new interest in the real-time characterization of semi-crystalline materials and that will ultimately be utilized as a starting point to optimize and expand the characterization of these extremely important materials.

Abstract: Natural systems transfer chiral information across multiple length scales through dynamic supramolecular interaction to accomplish various functions. Inspired by nature, many exquisite artificial supramolecular systems have been developed, in which controlling the supramolecular chirality holds the key to completing specific tasks. However, to achieve precise and non-invasive control and modulation of chirality in these systems remains challenging. As a non-invasive stimulus, light can be used to remotely control the chirality with high spatiotemporal precision. In contrast to common molecular switches, a synthetic molecular motor can act as a multistate chiroptical switch with unidirectional rotation, offering major potential to regulate more complex functions. Here, we present a light-driven molecular motor-based supramolecular polymer, in which the intrinsic chirality is transferred to the nanofibers, and the rotation of molecular motors governs the chirality and morphology of the supramolecular polymer. The resulting supramolecular polymer also exhibits light-controlled multistate aggregation-induced emission. These findings present a photochemically tunable multistate dynamic supramolecular system in water and pave the way for developing molecular motor-driven chiroptical materials.

Abstract: 3D superlattices made of colloidal quantum dots are a promising candidate for the next generation of optoelectronic devices as they are expected to exhibit a unique combination of tunable optical properties and coherent electrical transport through minibands. While most of the previous work was performed on 2D arrays, the control over the formation of these systems is lacking, where limited long-range order and energetical disorder have so far hindered the potential of these metamaterials, giving rise to disappointing transport properties. Here, it is reported that nanoscale-level controlled ordering of colloidal quantum dots in 3D and over large areas allows the achievement of outstanding transport properties. The measured electron mobilities are the highest ever reported for a self-assembled solid of fully quantum-confined objects. This ultimately demonstrates that optoelectronic metamaterials with highly tunable optical properties (in this case in the short-wavelength infrared spectral range) and charge mobilities approaching that of bulk semiconductor can be obtained. This finding paves the way toward a new generation of optoelectronic devices.

Abstract: Scarce information is available on the thin film morphology of Dion-Jacobson halide perovskites. However, the microstructure can have a profound impact on a material's photophysics and its potential for optoelectronic applications. The microscopic mechanisms at play in the prototypical 1,4-phenylenedimethanammonium lead iodide (PDMAPbI4) Dion-Jacobson compound are here elucidated through a combination of hyperspectral photoluminescence and Raman spectro-microscopy supported by x-ray diffraction. In concert, these techniques allow for a detailed analysis of local composition and microstructure. PDMAPbI4 thin films are shown to be phase-pure and to form micron-sized crystallites with a dominant out-of-plane stacking and strong in-plane rotational disorder. Sample topography, localised defects, and a strong impact of temperature-variation create a complex and heterogeneous picture of the luminescence that cannot be captured by a simplified bulk-semiconductor picture. Our study highlights the power of optical microscopy techniques used in combination, and underlines the danger of conceptual oversimplification when analysing the photophysics of perovskite thin films.

The crystallization behaviour of these systems, with filler content in the range of 0.2–3.5 wt% has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (up to 100 °C/min) and ex-situ structural and morphological characterization of samples prepared at processing-relevant cooling conditions (up to 2000 °C/s). Compared to the self-nucleated neat iPP, the nucleation efficiency was estimated to vary from 44 to 93% when increasing the filler content. Such a high nucleating efficiency has not been reported yet for a nanocomposite with iPP matrix. This result is due to the very good dispersion of the filler in these melt-mixed graphene-based polypropylene systems. The nucleation ability of the graphene filler does not reach a saturation in the concentration range studied. The gap between laboratory and industrial cooling rate scale is here reduced thanks to the information achieved from the fast-cooling experiments. By varying the filler amount in the investigated range, a significant shift of the cooling rate window in which the transition from α-to mesophase dominated crystallization takes place was detected. Notably, with 3.5 wt% graphene platelets, α-phase crystals are predominantly present in the material even after quenching at 1000 °C/s, similar to highly nucleated commercial iPP grades.

Abstract: For many years, fullerene derivatives have been the main n-type material of organic electronics and optoelectronics. Recently, fullerene derivatives functionalized with ethylene glycol (EG) side chains have been showing important properties such as enhanced dielectric constants, facile doping and enhanced self-assembly capabilities. Here, we have prepared field-effect transistors using a series of these fullerene derivatives equipped with EG side chains of different lengths. Transport data show the beneficial effect of increasing the EG side chain. In order to understand the material properties, full structural determination of these fullerene derivatives has been achieved by coupling the X-ray data with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The increase in transport properties is paired with the formation of extended layered structures, efficient molecular packing and an increase in the crystallite alignment. The layer-like structure is composed of conducting layers, containing of closely packed C60 balls approaching the inter-distance of 1 nm, that are separated by well-defined EG layers, where the EG chains are rather splayed with the chain direction almost perpendicular to the layer normal. Such a layered structure appears highly ordered and highly aligned with the C60 planes oriented parallel to the substrate in the thin film configuration. The order inside the thin film increases with the EG chain length, allowing the systems to achieve mobilities as high as 0.053 cm2 V−1 s−1. Our work elucidates the structure of these interesting semiconducting organic molecules and shows that the synergistic use of X-ray structural analysis and MD simulations is a powerful tool to identify the structure of thin organic films for optoelectronic applications., The synergistic use of X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulations reveals the structure–property relationships of [60]fullerene derivatives with oligoethylene–glycol side chains.

Abstract: While network formation is prevalent in nature, networks are generally not expected in inorganic structures. Exceptions are those cases in which surface states become important, such as nanoparticles. However, even in these cases, the morphology of these networks is difficult to control and they show a large degree of disorder. In this work, we show that highly ordered and interconnected nanoscale networks of functional metal oxides can be fabricated by a combination of polymer imprinting and polymer templating through solution processable methods. We report the fabrication of a number of functional oxide networks (i.e., BiFeO3, SrTiO3, La0.7Ca0.3MnO3, and HfO2) from solution, showing that all the oxide materials tried so far are able to follow the self-assembled network morphology dictated by the polymer structure. These networks were characterized for the overall structure by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering showed a good imprint quality on the mm2 scale for the combined networks, which is challenging given that multiple processing steps were involved during the fabrication. The material stoichiometries were investigated by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and the crystal phases by grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering. When electronic functionality is anticipated, the networks behave as expected: conducting AFM on the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 networks confirmed the conductive character of this composition; and piezoresponse force microscopy of the BiFeO3 network is consistent with the presence of ferroelectric behavior. These nanoscale networks show promise for future applications in adaptable electronics, such as neuromorphic computing or brain-inspired information processing.

39. Confined crystallization and polymorphism in iPP thin films

Abstract: The morphological and structural evolution of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in thin and ultrathin films casted by hot-solution spin coating is investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS). When reducing the film thickness from 300 nm to 15 nm, changes from a 3D to a quasi-2D morphology are observed. The quasi-2D confined morphology is found in the 220-40 nm thickness range and is characterized by a predominant edge-on orientation (EO) of the lamellae. A transition to the flat-on (FO) orientation paired to a drastic decrease of the sample roughness is observed for thicknesses below 30 nm. Surprisingly, a mixed morphology where orthorhombic γ-phase branches develop from FO α-phase lamellae is observed at the lowest prepared thickness of 15 nm. The unexpected appearance of the γ-phase for the iPP grade used here is due to the favourable flat-on lamellar orientation at the lowest film thickness. Thanks to a quantitative analysis of the GIWAXS patterns, the relative amount between edge-on and flat-on oriented lamellae (χEO/χFO) is calculated, providing useful insights on the real morphological composition of the iPP thin films, a task that is very challenging to achieve with microscopy techniques.

41. Chemoradiation vs. local excision in the management of early squamous cell carcinoma of the anus: a systematic review

Abstract: Squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SCCA) suffers a constant increase each year in the last decades. Recent studies suggested the possibility of local excision (LE) as an option for early-stage SCAC patients. This systematic review aims to summarize the available evidence on the comparison of LE vs. chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in the treatment of early SCCA patients.We conducted a literature review including MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, clinicaltrials.gov, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews through June 2022. MOOSE guidelines were followed. We used the methodological index for non-randomized studies (MINORS) tool to assess quality. Data on survival and procedure-associated costs were extracted.Four retrospective studies including 3323 patients were included. They were all comparative retrospective cohort studies (three were registry-based studies, either NCDB or SEER) with a MINORS score of 16-19 points. Overall survival (OS) was comparable between LE and CRT patients in three studies, with a 5-year OS of 85.3-100% in LE patients and 85-91.6% in CRT patients. One study investigated cancer-specific survival (CSS) and reported similar 5-year CSS in LE (98%) and CRT patients (96%). One investigated progression-free survival (PFS) and did not report any statistically significant difference in 5-year PFS between LE (91%) and CRT patients (83%). Only one study considered the mean costs associated with the two approaches (29,210 USD with LE and 46,350 USD with CRT).LE may potentially be considered a valid alternative to CRT for patients with early-stage SCAA. Results of prospective randomized long-term trials comparing LE with CRT are warranted to draw definitive conclusions and consider LE as a true cost-effective strategy for T1N0 SCCA with similar oncologic results offered by CRT, which-to date-remains the "gold standard."CRD42022338750.

42. Missing the main actor: Intra-operative diagnosis of agenesis of the gallbladder - When late is not 'too' late

Abstract: Agenesis of the gallbladder (AGB) without extrahepatic biliary atresia is a rare congenital disease. Ultrasound (US) examination can be misleading and reveal a contracted shrunken gallbladder when there is not any and the patient in most cases is taken to the OR for a standard cholecystectomy. We describe the case of a 54-year-old female with colicky right upper abdominal pain with nausea. US revealed a contracted scleroatrophic gallbladder and the patient was listed for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. At laparoscopy, despite careful search, the gallbladder was never visualised, and the suspicion of AGB was raised. An intra-operative cholangiography confirmed the hypothesis. The post-operative recovery was uneventful, and abdominal computed tomography scan failed to show the presence of gallbladder, therefore confirming the diagnosis of AGB. Lack of awareness of this condition among radiologists and surgeons is the main reason for unnecessary operations and potentially damages to the biliary tract.

Abstract: Molecular doping makes possible tunable electronic properties of organic semiconductors, yet a lack of control of the doping process narrows its scope for advancing organic electronics. Here, we demonstrate that the molecular doping process can be improved by introducing a neutral radical molecule, namely nitroxyl radical (2,2,6,6-teramethylpiperidin-i-yl) oxyl (TEMPO). Fullerene derivatives are used as the host and 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazoles (DMBI-H) as the n-type dopant. TEMPO can abstract a hydrogen atom from DMBI-H and transform the latter into a much stronger reducing agent DMBI•, which efficiently dopes the fullerene derivative to yield an electrical conductivity of 4.4 S cm-1. However, without TEMPO, the fullerene derivative is only weakly doped likely by a hydride transfer following by an inefficient electron transfer. This work unambiguously identifies the doping pathway in fullerene derivative/DMBI-H systems in the presence of TEMPO as the transfer of a hydrogen atom accompanied by electron transfer. In the absence of TEMPO, the doping process inevitably leads to the formation of less symmetrical hydrogenated fullerene derivative anions or radicals, which adversely affect the molecular packing. By adding TEMPO we can exclude the formation of such species and, thus, improve charge transport. In addition, a lower temperature is sufficient to meet an efficient doping process in the presence of TEMPO. Thereby, we provide an extra control of the doping process, enabling enhanced thermoelectric performance at a low processing temperature.

Abstract: We developed a new technique to reduce the length of the enteric defect to be closed during intracorporeal anastomosis in laparoscopic right hemicolectomy (LRH), also avoiding the need to suture the first part of the anastomosis in a deep space with an acute angle. From January 2017, after the ileo-colic anastomosis was completed, an additional stapler cartridge was applied starting at the colonic rim and including the small bowel part of the anastomosis. The isoperistaltic fashion of the ileo-colonic anastomosis was maintained. The remaining defect left to be closed was 2–3 cm. We compared the results of the novel technique with those of the ‘standard’ closure (full-length enterotomy). In the last 30 months, this technique was successfully used in 32 patients (Group A), compared with 33 patients (2012–2016) operated with ‘standard’ closure (Group B). Age, BMI and post-operative stage distribution were similar. Abstract: In this work, we have conducted in situ simultaneous small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy experiments to investigate the fundamental differences in the mechanism of the mesomorphic to alpha phase transition of the isotactic polypropylene homopolymer and the random ethylene-propylene copolymer. Via quantitative analysis of the results coming from the three techniques, we found that in the homopolymer, chain interlock and chain extension occur during the transition. However, these processes are not necessary for the transition to occur. Indeed, the presence of randomly distributed ethylene co-units hinders the chain interlock process in the early stages of the phase transition (T > 60 degrees C) and suppresses the chain elongation process at the later stages (T > 90 degrees C). Consequently, the mesomorphic to a-phase transition in the random copolymer occurs with inclusion of the ethylene co-units inside the crystal lattice, causing increased lateral interchain distance and larger crystalline sizes. Our results show how differences exist in the way solid phase transitions occur at the molecular scale when comonomers are included into the macromolecular chains, leading to a better understanding of the thermal behavior of semi-crystalline polymers.

Abstract: We report the synthesis and structural characterization of a main-chain liquid crystal polymer constituted by a 1,2,4-oxadiazole-based bent-core repeat unit. For the first time, a liquid crystal polymer made of bent mesogenic units is demonstrated to exhibit cybotactic order in the nematic phase. Coupled with the chain-bond constraints, cybotaxis results in maximized molecular correlations that make this material of great potential in the search for the elusive biaxial and ferroelectric nematic phases. Indeed, repolarization current measurements in the nematic phase hint at a ferroelectric-like switching response (upon application of an electric field of only 1.0 V μm–1) that, albeit to be definitely confirmed by complementary techniques, is strongly supported by the comparative repolarization current measurements in the nematic and isotropic phases. Abstract: Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals are highly attractive for next-generation optoelectronics because they are easy to synthesize and offer great compositional and morphological tunability. However, the replacement of lead by tin for sustainability reasons is hampered by the unstable nature of Sn2+ oxidation state and by an insufficient understanding of the chemical processes involved in the synthesis. Here we demonstrate an optimized synthetic route to obtain stable, tunable, and monodisperse CsSnI3 nanocrystals, exhibiting well defined excitonic peaks. Similar to lead halide perovskites, we prepare these nanocrystals by combining a precursor mixture of SnI2 , oleylamine and oleic acid, with a Cs-oleate precursor. Among the products, nanocrystals with 10 nm lateral size in the γ-orthorhombic phase prove to be the most stable. To achieve such stability, an excess of precursor SnI2 as well as sub-stoichiometric Sn:ligand ratios are key. Structural, compositional and optical investigations complemented by first-principle DFT calculations confirm that nanocrystal nucleation and growth follow the formation of (R-NH3 + )2 SnI4 nanosheets with R = C18 H35 . Under specific synthetic conditions, stable mixtures of 3D nanocrystals CsSnI3 and 2D nanosheets (Ruddlesden-Popper (R-NH3 + )2 Csn-1 Snn I3n+1 with n>1) are obtained. Abstract: High electrical conductivity is a prerequisite for improving the performance of organic semiconductors for various applications and can be achieved through molecular doping. However, often the conductivity is enhanced only up to a certain optimum doping concentration, beyond which it decreases significantly. We combine analytical work and Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate that carrier-carrier interactions can cause this conductivity decrease and reduce the maximum conductivity by orders of magnitude, possibly in a broad range of materials. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we disentangle the effect of carrier-carrier interactions from carrier-dopant interactions. Coulomb potentials of ionized dopants are shown to decrease the conductivity, but barely influence the trend of conductivity versus doping concentration. We illustrate these findings using a doped fullerene derivative for which we can correctly estimate the carrier density at which the conductivity maximizes. We use grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering to show that the decrease of the conductivity cannot be explained by changes to the microstructure. We propose the reduction of carrier-carrier interactions as a strategy to unlock higher-conductivity organic semiconductors.

Abstract: The ‘phonon-glass electron-crystal’ concept has triggered most of the progress that has been achieved in inorganic thermoelectrics in the past two decades. Organic thermoelectric materials, unlike their inorganic counterparts, exhibit molecular diversity, flexible mechanical properties and easy fabrication, and are mostly ‘phonon glasses’. However, the thermoelectric performances of these organic materials are largely limited by low molecular order and they are therefore far from being ‘electron crystals’. Here, we report a molecularly n-doped fullerene derivative with meticulous design of the side chain that approaches an organic ‘PGEC’ thermoelectric material. This thermoelectric material exhibits an excellent electrical conductivity of >10 S cm−1 and an ultralow thermal conductivity of, Achieved high thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) in organic thermoelectric materials remains a challenge due to their low packing order and poor host/dopant miscibility. Here, the authors report side chain-engineered n-doped fullerene derivatives with record ZT >0.3 for organic thermoelectrics.
