The optimal performance of high-brightness free-electron lasers (FELs) is limited by the microbunching instability, which can cause variations in both the slice energy spread and longitudinal profile of electron beams. In this paper, we perform 2D Fourier analysis of the full bunch longitudinal phase space, such that modulations in both planes can be studied simultaneously. Unlike the standard 1D analysis, this method is able to reveal modulations in a folded phase space, which would otherwise remain uncovered. Additionally, the plasma oscillation between energy and density modulations is also revealed by this method. The damping of the microbunching instability, through the use of a laser heater, is also analysed with this technique. We confirm a mitigation of the amplitude of modulation and a red-shift of the microbunching frequency as the energy spread added increases. As an outcome of this work, a systematic experimental comparison of the development of the instability in the presence of different compression schemes is here presented for the first time.

The high demands on phase stability and sensitivity for vibronic XUV-WPI of molecular-beam targets are met using an XUV phase-cycling scheme. The detected quantum interferences exhibit vibronic dephasing and rephasing signatures along with an ultrafast decoherence assigned to the ICD process. A Fourier analysis reveals the molecular absorption spectrum with high resolution. Understanding how a spin current flows across metal-semiconductor interfaces at pico- and femtosecond time scales is of paramount importance for ultrafast spintronics, data processing, and storage applications. However, the possibility to directly access the propagation of spin currents, within such time scales, has been hampered by the simultaneous lack of both ultrafast element-specific magnetic sensitive probes and tailored well-built and characterized metal-semiconductor interfaces. Here, by means of a novel free-electron laser-based element-sensitive ultrafast time-resolved Kerr spectroscopy, we reveal different magnetodynamics for the Ni M 2 , 3 and Si L 2 , 3 absorption edges. These results are assumed to be the experimental evidence of photoinduced spin currents propagating at a speed of ∼ 0.2 nm/fs across the Ni/Si interface.

Physical review accelerators and beams 24(8), 080702 (2021). doi:10.1103/PhysRevAccelBeams.24.080702, Echo-enabled harmonic generation free-electron lasers (EEHG FELs)are promising candidates to produce fully coherent soft x-ray pulses by virtue of efficient high harmonic frequency up-conversion from UV lasers.The ultimate spectral limit of EEHG, however, remains unclear, because of the broadening and distortions induced in the output spectrum by residual broadband energy modulations in the electron beam. We present a mathematical description of the impact of incoherent(broadband) energy modulations on the bunching spectrum produced by the microbunching instability through both the accelerator and the EEHG line. The model is in agreementwith a systematic experimental characterization of the FERMI EEHGFEL in the photon energy range $130-210$ eV. We find that amplification of electron beam energy distortions primarily in the EEHG dispersive sections explains an observed reductionof the FEL spectral brightness that is proportional to the EEHGharmonic number. Local maxima of the FEL spectral brightness and of the spectralstability are found for a suitable balance of the dispersive sections'strength and the first seed laser pulse energy. The advent of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft x-ray free electron lasers (FELs) has enabled nonlinear optical experiments at wavelengths shorter than the visible-UV range. An important class of experiments is those based on the four-wave-mixing (FWM) approach, which are often based on interactions between pulses at different wavelengths. The exploitation of multiple EUV/soft x-ray wavelengths is not straightforward, but it can significantly expand the range of applications. In this manuscript we report on an experimental approach, based on the concomitant use of a non-collinear split-delay-and-recombination unit (“mini-Timer”) and on a two-color seeded FEL emission scheme (“twin-seed mode”). We used a diamond sample for demonstrating the capability of this setup of generating and detecting a FWM signal stimulated by two-color EUV FEL pulses. This approach can be further exploited for developing experimental methods based on non-linear EUV/x-ray optics.

Physical review accelerators and beams 23(12), 120704 (1-8) (2020). doi:10.1103/PhysRevAccelBeams.23.120704, FERMI is a seeded FEL based on the High Gain Harmonic Generation (HGHG) scheme and has been generating intense and fully coherent extreme ultra-violet and soft x-ray pulses for several years. The high-degree performance of the FEL leans on a high brightness electron beam, with small transverse emittance ( ∼1$μm$) and a peak current of about 700-800 A. The main constraint on lasing at high harmonics of the seed is low electron time-slice energy spread. The optimization of the photoinjector and of some linac parameters has allowed a reduction of the relative slice energy spread to the level of few times of 10$^{−5}$. With these new conditions, the FEL can be operated without the need of a laser heater to suppress micro bunching instabilities and this "cold’’ beam has allowed generation of extreme UV pulses with pulse energy exceeding a mJ, and with peak power of about 10 GW. International audience; Extension of stable longitudinal coherence from vacuum ultraviolet to x rays is highly sought after in the free-electron laser (FEL) community, but it is often prevented by bandwidth broadening originated in the electron beam microbunching instability. We demonstrate that a proper tuning of the linear optics before the beam enters the undulator mitigates the microbunching-induced sideband instability. The experiment was conducted at the Fermi FEL operated in echo-enabled harmonic generation mode, where the spectral brightness at 7 nm wavelength was doubled. The FEL performance is compared to nonoptimized optics solutions and characterized in terms of peak intensity and spectral bandwidth shot-to-shot stability. The technique has straightforward implementation, because it uses quadrupole magnets routinely adopted for beam transport, and it applies to any FEL architecture, so paving the way to the production of high-intensity Fourier-transform limited x-ray pulses in existing and planned FEL facilities.

High-brightness electron bunches, such as those generated and accelerated in free-electron lasers (FELs), can develop small-scale structure in the longitudinal phase space. This causes variations in the slice energy spread and current profile of the bunch which then undergo amplification, in an effect known as the microbunching instability. By imposing energy spread modulations on the bunch in the low-energy section of an accelerator, using an undulator and a modulated laser pulse in the centre of a dispersive chicane, it is possible tomanipulate the bunch longitudinal phase space. This allows for the control and study of the instability in unprecedented detail. We report measurements and analysis of such modulated electron bunches in the 2Dspectro-temporal domain at the FERMI FEL, for three different bunch compression schemes. We also perform corresponding simulations of these experiments and show that the codes are indeed able to reproduce the measurements across a wide spectral range. This detailed experimental verification of the ability of codes to capture the essential beam dynamics of the microbunching instability will benefit the design and performance of future FELs., 12 pages, 14 figures

The effect of multiple small-angle Coulomb scattering, or intrabeam scattering (IBS) is routinely observed in electron storage rings over the typical damping time scale of milliseconds. So far, IBS has not been observed in single pass electron accelerators because charge density orders of magnitude higher than in storage rings would be needed. We show that such density is now available at high brightness electron linacs for free-electron lasers (FELs). We report measurements of the beam energy spread in the FERMI linac in the presence of the microbunching instability, which are consistent with a revisited IBS model for single pass systems. We also show that neglecting the hereby demonstrated effect of IBS in the parameter range typical of seeded VUV and soft x-ray FELs, results in too conservative a facility design, or failure to realise the accessible potential performance. As an example, an optimization of the FERMI parameters driven by an experimentally benchmarked model, opens the door to the extension of stable single spectral line emission to the water window (2.3–4.4 nm), with far-reaching implications for experiments in a variety of disciplines, ranging from physics and chemistry to biology and material sciences, and including nonlinear x-ray optics based on the four-wave-mixing approach.

Results on fabrication and experimental characterization of wire scanners (WS) with submicrometer spatial resolution are presented. Independently fabricated at PSI and FERMI by means of nanolithography, the proposed WS solutions consist of 900 and 800 nm wide free-standing stripes ensuring a geometric resolution of about 250 nm. The nanofabricated WS were tested successfully at SwissFEL where low-charge electron beams with a vertical size of 400--500 nm were characterized. Further experimental tests at 200 pC confirmed the resilience to the heat-loading of the structures. With respect to conventional WS consisting of a metallic wire stretched onto a frame, the nanofabricated WS allow for an improvement of the spatial resolution from the micrometer to the submicrometer level as well as of beam invasiveness thanks to an equivalent reduction of the impact surface of the scanning stripe. The present work represents an important milestone toward the goal---that PSI and FERMI are pursuing---to realize a standard WS solution with minimal invasiveness and submicrometer resolution.

The recent development of ultrafast extreme ultraviolet (XUV) coherent light sources bears great potential for a better understanding of the structure and dynamics of matter. Promising routes are advanced coherent control and nonlinear spectroscopy schemes in the XUV energy range, yielding unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. However, their implementation has been hampered by the experimental challenge of generating XUV pulse sequences with precisely controlled timing and phase properties. In particular, direct control and manipulation of the phase of individual pulses within an XUV pulse sequence opens exciting possibilities for coherent control and multidimensional spectroscopy, but has not been accomplished. Here, we overcome these constraints in a highly time-stabilized and phase-modulated XUV-pump, XUV-probe experiment, which directly probes the evolution and dephasing of an inner subshell electronic coherence. This approach, avoiding any XUV optics for direct pulse manipulation, opens up extensive applications of advanced nonlinear optics and spectroscopy at XUV wavelengths., Light pulses with controllable parameters are desired for studying the fundamental properties of matter. Here the authors generate and use phase-manipulated and highly time-stable XUV pulse pairs to probe the coherent evolution and dephasing of XUV electronic coherences in helium and argon.

We demonstrate a novel timing tool for Free-Electron Lasers to determine the delay between an attosecond pulse train and infrared pulse with sub-optical-cycle resolu-. tion.

Attosecond pulses are fundamental for the investigation of valence and core-electron dynamics on their natural timescale. At present the reproducible generation and characterisation of attosecond waveforms has been demonstrated only through the process of high-order harmonic generation. Several methods for the shaping of attosecond waveforms have been proposed, including metallic filters, multilayer mirrors and manipulation of the driving field. However, none of these approaches allow for the flexible manipulation of the temporal characteristics of the attosecond waveforms, and they suffer from the low conversion efficiency of the high-order harmonic generation process. Free Electron Lasers, on the contrary, deliver femtosecond, extreme ultraviolet and X-ray pulses with energies ranging from tens of $\mathrm{\mu}$J to a few mJ. Recent experiments have shown that they can generate sub-fs spikes, but with temporal characteristics that change shot-to-shot. Here we show the first demonstration of reproducible generation of high energy ($\mathrm{\mu}$J level) attosecond waveforms using a seeded Free Electron Laser. We demonstrate amplitude and phase manipulation of the harmonic components of an attosecond pulse train in combination with a novel approach for its temporal reconstruction. The results presented here open the way to perform attosecond time-resolved experiments with Free Electron Lasers.

International audience; We exploit echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) to produce fully coherent free-electron laser (FEL) pulses at soft-x-ray wavelengths and shape their spectrotemporal content. In an EEHG FEL, the longitudinal phase space of the relativistic electron beam that amplifies light is precisely tailored using two external seed lasers and two magnetic chicanes. We show that the spectrotemporal properties of the emitted radiation can be controlled by tuning the bandwidth, linear frequency chirp, and intensity of one of the seed lasers. The experimental data are supported by analytical and numerical models. Our results open a pathway toward coherent control of quantum processes at short wavelengths in the fields of applied physics, chemistry and biology, where manipulating the radiation spectrum is essential. The ability to precisely control the spectrotemporal content of intense, short-wavelength FEL pulses and the low sensitivity of the radiation to electron-beam imperfections make the technique an ideal candidate for use in chirped-pulse amplification schemes.

Synopsis When an electron is ejected from an atom after absorption of a photon, the photoelectron wave packet has an extremely short group delay between the photon absorption and the electron emission. This interval, called the Eisenbud-Wigner-Smith delay, is on the order of a few attoseconds. Here, we present a new method to measure the photoemission delay, using coherent-controlled free-electron laser pulses.

This radiation is also characterized by a high degree of polarization that is generally linear anddepends on the undulator properties. The possibility of controlling the polarization state of the radiation isan important option for free electron lasers that is critical for a large class of experiments. Such control canbe achieved using variable polarization undulators or alternatively via the crossed polarized undulatorscheme. We report the results of an extensive study for the characterization of the crossed-polarizedundulator scheme in a number of different configurations. A simple model, based on Gaussian mode beampropagation, is presented and used to reproduce the experimental results obtained at the seeded freeelectron laser FERMI. A good agreement is found between the model and the experiment allowing us tounderstand the impact of the wavefront properties of the radiation coming from the consecutive undulatorson the output radiation. Quantum mechanically, photoionization can be fully described by the complex photoionization amplitudes that describe the transition between the ground state and the continuum state. Knowledge of the value of the phase of these amplitudes has been a central interest in photoionization studies and newly developing attosecond science, since the phase can reveal important information about phenomena such as electron correlation. We present a new attosecond-precision interferometric method of angle-resolved measurement for the phase of the photoionization amplitudes, using two phase-locked Extreme Ultraviolet pulses of frequency $\omega$ and $2\omega$, from a Free-Electron Laser. Phase differences $\Delta \tilde \eta$ between one- and two-photon ionization channels, averaged over multiple wave packets, are extracted for neon $2p$ electrons as a function of emission angle at photoelectron energies 7.9, 10.2, and 16.6 eV. $\Delta \tilde \eta$ is nearly constant for emission parallel to the electric vector but increases at 10.2 eV for emission perpendicular to the electric vector. We model our observations with both perturbation and \textit{ab initio} theory, and find excellent agreement. In the existing method for attosecond measurement, Reconstruction of Attosecond Beating By Interference of Two-photon Transitions (RABBITT), a phase difference between two-photon pathways involving absorption and emission of an infrared photon is extracted. Our method can be used for extraction of a phase difference between single-photon and two-photon pathways and provides a new tool for attosecond science, which is complementary to RABBITT.

X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs), which amplify light emitted by a relativistic electron beam, are extending nonlinear optical techniques to shorter wavelengths, adding element specificity by exciting and probing electronic transitions from core levels. These techniques would benefit tremendously from having a stable FEL source, generating spectrally pure and wavelength-tunable pulses. We show that such requirements can be met by operating the FEL in the so-called echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) configuration. Here, two external conventional lasers are used to precisely tailor the longitudinal phase space of the electron beam before emission of X-rays. We demonstrate high-gain EEHG lasing producing stable, intense, nearly fully coherent pulses at wavelengths as short as 5.9 nm (~211 eV) at the FERMI FEL user facility. Low sensitivity to electron-beam imperfections and observation of stable, narrow-band, coherent emission down to 2.6 nm (~474 eV) make the technique a prime candidate for generating laser-like pulses in the X-ray spectral region, opening the door to multidimensional coherent spectroscopies at short wavelengths. Echo-enabled harmonic generation in a free-electron laser enables 45th harmonic pulses from a 264 nm wavelength seed, yielding 5.9 nm wavelength coherent output.

This paper is an addendum to reference (Brynes et al 2018 New J. Phys. 20 073035), in which we studied the transverse emittance growth due to coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) in the bunch compressor of a free-electron laser. Analytic results based on the theory of CSR were compared with results from experiment and simulation. Recent results have been published (Stupakov 2019 arXiv:1901.10745) which correct the theoretical emittance growth, predicting a smaller increase than that which was expected based on previous results. When comparing these new calculations with the emittance growth that was measured experimentally, and with 3D simulations, we find an improved agreement when the bunch compression approaches its maximum value.

We demonstrate that emission of coherent transition radiation by a ∼1 GeV energy-electron beam passing through an Al foil is enhanced in intensity and extended in frequency spectral range, by the energy correlation established along the beam by coherent synchrotron radiation wakefield, in the presence of a proper electron optics in the beam delivery system. Analytical and numerical models, based on experimental electron beam parameters collected at the FERMI free electron laser (FEL), predict transition radiation with two intensity peaks at ∼0.3 THz and ∼1.5 THz, and extending up to 8.5 THz with intensity above 20 dB w.r.t. the main peak. Up to 80-µJ pulse energy integrated over the full bandwidth is expected at the source, and in agreement with experimental pulse energy measurements. By virtue of its implementation in an FEL beam dump line, this work promises dissemination of user-oriented multi-THz beamlines parasitic and self-synchronized to EUV and x-ray FELs.

An understanding of collective effects is of fundamental importance for the design and optimisation of the performance of modern accelerators. In particular, the design of an accelerator with strict requirements on the beam quality, such as a free electron laser (FEL), is highly dependent on a correspondence between simulation, theory and experiments in order to correctly account for the effect of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR), and other collective effects. A traditional approach in accelerator simulation codes is to utilise an analytic one-dimensional approximation to the CSR force. We present an extension of the 1D CSR theory in order to correctly account for the CSR force at the entrance and exit of a bending magnet. A limited range of applicability to this solution, in particular in bunches with a large transverse spot size or offset from the nominal axis, is recognised. More recently developed codes calculate the CSR effect in dispersive regions directly from the Lienard-Wiechert potentials, albeit with approximations to improve the computational time. A new module of the General Particle Tracer (GPT) code was developed for simulating the effects of CSR, and benchmarked against other codes. We experimentally demonstrate departure from the commonly used 1D CSR theory for more extreme bunch length compression scenarios at the FERMI FEL facility. Better agreement is found between experimental data and the codes which account for the transverse extent of the bunch, particularly in more extreme compression scenarios., 33 pages, 19 figures, submitted to New J. Nonlinear optical processes at soft x-ray wavelengths have remained largely unexplored due to the lack of available light sources with the requisite intensity and coherence. Here we report the observation of soft x-ray second harmonic generation near the carbon K edge (∼284 eV) in graphite thin films generated by high intensity, coherent soft x-ray pulses at the FERMI free electron laser. Our experimental results and accompanying first-principles theoretical analysis highlight the effect of resonant enhancement above the carbon K edge and show the technique to be interfacially sensitive in a centrosymmetric sample with second harmonic intensity arising primarily from the first atomic layer at the open surface. This technique and the associated theoretical framework demonstrate the ability to selectively probe interfaces, including those that are buried, with elemental specificity, providing a new tool for a range of scientific problems.

We have examined the transmission of soft X-ray pulses from the FERMI free electron laser through carbon films of varying thickness, quantifying nonlinear effects of pulses above and below the carbon K-edge. At typical of soft X-ray free electron laser intensities, pulses exhibit linear absorption at photon energies above and below the K-edge, ∼308 and ∼260 eV, respectively; whereas two-photon absorption becomes significant slightly below the K-edge, ∼284.2 eV. The measured two-photon absorption cross section at 284.18 eV (∼6 × 10−48 cm4 s) is 7 orders of magnitude above what is expected from a simple theory based on hydrogen-like atoms – a result of resonance effects.

TeraFERMI is the THz beamline of the Free Electron Laser FERMI, now in commissioning. The emitted THz pulses, from a Coherent Transition Radiation source, are ultrashort (sub-ps), high power (MV/cm) and broadband (from 0.3 up to above 10 THz). Here we report on the present status of TeraFERMI, the first experimental characterization of the THz radiation and the first pilot experiments. Since THz light couples with vibrational, electronic and magnetic excitations of matter, TeraFERMI will be used to achieve light control on material's properties, and perform nonlinear THz studies.

Studying ultrafast processes on the nanoscale with element specificity requires a powerful femtosecond source of tunable extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) or x-ray radiation, such as a free-electron laser (FEL). Current efforts in FEL development are aimed at improving the wavelength tunability and multicolor operation, which will potentially lead to the development of new characterization techniques offering a higher chemical sensitivity and improved spatial resolution. One of the most promising approaches is the echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG), where two external seed lasers are used to precisely control the spectro-temporal properties of the FEL pulse. Here, we study the expected performance of EEHG at the FERMI FEL, using numerical simulations. We show that, by employing the existing FERMI layout with minor modifications, the EEHG scheme will be able to produce gigawatt peak-power pulses at wavelengths as short as 5 nm. We discuss some possible detrimental effects that may affect the performance of EEHG and compare the results to the existing double-stage FEL cascade, currently in operation at FERMI. Finally, our simulations show that, after substantial machine upgrades, EEHG has the potential to deliver coherent multicolor pulses reaching wavelengths as short as 3 nm, enabling x-ray pump-x-ray probe experiments in the water window.

The potential of the two-color mode implemented at the FERMI free-electron laser (FEL) source for pumping and probing selectively different atomic species has been demonstrated by time-resolved scattering experiments with permalloy (FeNi alloy) and NiFe 2 O 4 samples. We monitored the ultra-fast demagnetization of Ni induced by the pump FEL pulse, by tuning the linearly-polarized FEL probe pulse to the Ni-3p resonance and measuring the scattered intensity in the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect geometry. The measurements were performed by varying the intensity of the FEL pump pulse, tuning its wavelength to and off of the Fe-3p resonance, and by spanning the FEL probe pulse delays across the 300–900 fs range. The obtained results have Photonics 2017, 4, 6 2 of 10 evidenced that for the case of NiFe 2 O 4 , there is a sensible difference in the magnetic response at the Ni site when the pump pulse causes electronic excitations at the Fe site.

The hitherto unexplored two-photon doubly excited states [Ne∗(2p-13s)]2 were experimentally identified using the seeded, fully coherent, intense extreme ultraviolet free-electron laser FERMI. These states undergo ultrafast interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD), which predominantly produces singly ionized dimers. In order to obtain the rate of ICD, the resulting yield of Ne2+ ions was recorded as a function of delay between the extreme ultraviolet pump and UV probe laser pulses. The extracted lifetimes of the long-lived doubly excited states, 390(-130/+450) fs, and of the short-lived ones, less than 150 fs, are in good agreement with ab initio quantum mechanical calculations.

In linac-driven free-electron lasers, colliders, and energy recovery linacs, a common way to compress the electron bunch to kiloampere level is based upon the implementation of a magnetic dispersive element that converts particle energy deviation into a path-length difference. Nonlinearities of such a process are usually compensated by enabling a high harmonic rf structure properly tuned in amplitude and phase. This approach is however not straightforward, e.g., in C-band and X-band linacs. In this Letter we demonstrate that the longitudinal self-induced field excited by the electron beam itself is able to linearize the compression process without any use of high harmonic rf structure. The method is implemented at the FERMI linac, with the resulting high quality beam used to drive the seeded free-electron laser during user experiments. © 2017 American Physical Society.

Single-photon laser enabled Auger decay (spLEAD) is an electronic de-excitation process which was recently predicted and observed in Ne. We have investigated it using bichromatic phase-locked free electron laser radiation and extensive angle-resolved photoelectron measurements, supported by a detailed theoretical model. We first used separately the fundamental wavelength resonant with the Ne+ 2s–2p transition, 46.17 nm, and its second harmonic, 23.08 nm, then their phase-locked bichromatic combination. In the latter case the phase difference between the two wavelengths was scanned, and interference effects were observed, confirming that the spLEAD process was occurring. The detailed theoretical model we developed qualitatively predicts all observations: branching ratios between the final Auger states, their amplitudes of oscillation as a function of phase, the phase lag between the oscillations of different final states, and partial cancellation of the oscillations under certain conditions.

SwissFEL is a x-rays free electron laser (FEL) driven by a 5.8 GeV linac under construction at Paul Scherrer Institut. In SwissFEL, wire scanners (WSCs) will be complementary to view-screens for emittance measurements and routinely used to monitor the transverse profile of the electron beam during FEL operations. The SwissFEL WSC is composed of an in-vacuum beam-probe---motorized by a stepper motor---and an out-vacuum pick-up of the wire signal. The mechanical stability of the WSC in-vacuum hardware has been characterized on a test bench. In particular, the motor induced vibrations of the wire have been measured and mapped for different motor speeds. Electron-beam tests of the entire WSC setup together with different wire materials have been carried out at the 250 MeV SwissFEL Injector Test Facility (SITF, Paul Scherrer Institut, CH) and at FERMI (Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste, Italy). In particular, a comparative study of the relative measurement accuracy and the radiation-dose release of $\mathrm{Al}(99)\ensuremath{\mathbin:}\mathrm{Si}(1)$ and tungsten (W) wires has been carried out. On the basis of the outcome of the bench and electron-beam tests, the SwissFEL WSC can be qualified as a high resolution and machine-saving diagnostic tool in consideration of the mechanical stability of the scanning wire at the micrometer level and the choice of the wire material ensuring a drastic reduction of the radiation-dose release with respect to conventional metallic wires. The main aspects of the design, laboratory characterization and electron beam tests of the SwissFEL WSCs are presented.

TeraFERMI is the coherent transition radiation THz source now in commissioning at the FERMI free electron laser (FEL) facility in Italy. The high brightness electron beam driving the FEL is transversally and longitudinally manipulated in the dump line following the FEL undulator, in order to eventually produce hundreds of μJ-level energy per pulse, several-THz emission from the target. We report on the status of TeraFERMI, the first experimental characterization of the electron beam dynamics and of the THz radiation, and provide an outlook of the next TeraFERMI runs.

Chirped pulse amplification in optical lasers is a revolutionary technique, which allows the generation of extremely powerful femtosecond pulses in the infrared and visible spectral ranges. Such pulses are nowadays an indispensable tool for a myriad of applications, both in fundamental and applied research. In recent years, a strong need emerged for light sources producing ultra-short and intense laser-like X-ray pulses, to be used for experiments in a variety of disciplines, ranging from physics and chemistry to biology and material sciences. This demand was satisfied by the advent of short-wavelength free-electron lasers. However, for any given free-electron laser setup, a limit presently exists in the generation of ultra-short pulses carrying substantial energy. Here we present the experimental implementation of chirped pulse amplification on a seeded free-electron laser in the extreme-ultraviolet, paving the way to the generation of fully coherent sub-femtosecond gigawatt pulses in the water window (2.3–4.4 nm)., Short laser pulses of femtosecond time scales are in high demand in order to explore the fast electron dynamics in light-matter interactions. Here, the authors demonstrated the compression of free electron laser pulses in the extreme ultraviolet range by using a chirped pulse amplification technique.

Researchers demonstrate correlation of two colours (63.0 and 31.5 nm wavelengths) in a free-electron laser and control photoelectron angular distribution by adjusting phase with 3 attosecond resolution. Extreme ultraviolet and X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) produce short-wavelength pulses with high intensity, ultrashort duration, well-defined polarization and transverse coherence, and have been utilized for many experiments previously possible only at long wavelengths: multiphoton ionization1, pumping an atomic laser2 and four-wave mixing spectroscopy3. However one important optical technique, coherent control, has not yet been demonstrated, because self-amplified spontaneous emission FELs have limited longitudinal coherence4,5,6,7. Single-colour pulses from the FERMI seeded FEL are longitudinally coherent8,9, and two-colour emission is predicted to be coherent. Here, we demonstrate the phase correlation of two colours, and manipulate it to control an experiment. Light of wavelengths 63.0 and 31.5 nm ionized neon, and we controlled the asymmetry of the photoelectron angular distribution10,11 by adjusting the phase, with a temporal resolution of 3 as. This opens the door to new short-wavelength coherent control experiments with ultrahigh time resolution and chemical sensitivity.

FERMI, the seeded free electron laser (FEL) in operation in Italy, is providing the User Community with unique fully coherent radiation, in the wavelength range 100–4 nm. FERMI is the first FEL fully synchronized by means of optical fibers. The optical timing system ensures an ultra-stable phase reference to its distributed clients. Several femtosecond longitudinal diagnostics verify the achieved performance; the bunch length monitor (BLM) and the bunch arrival monitor (BAM) will be presented in this paper. Feedback systems play a crucial role to guarantee the needed long-term electron beam stability. A real-time infrastructure allows shot-to-shot communication between front-end computers and the servers. Orbit feedbacks are useful in machine tuning, whereas longitudinal feedbacks control electron energy, compression and arrival time. A flexible software framework allows a rapid implementation of heterogeneous multi-input–multi-output (MIMO) longitudinal loops simply by selecting the appropriate sensors and actuators.
