1. Solar ultraviolet light collector for germicidal irradiation on the moon

Abstract: Abstract Prolonged human-crewed missions on the Moon are foreseen as a gateway for Mars and asteroid colonisation in the next decades. Health risks related to long-time permanence in space have been partially investigated. Hazards due to airborne biological contaminants represent a relevant problem in space missions. A possible way to perform pathogens’ inactivation is by employing the shortest wavelength range of Solar ultraviolet radiation, the so-called germicidal range. On Earth, it is totally absorbed by the atmosphere and does not reach the surface. In space, such Ultraviolet solar component is present and effective germicidal irradiation for airborne pathogens’ inactivation can be achieved inside habitable outposts through a combination of highly reflective internal coating and optimised geometry of the air ducts. The Solar Ultraviolet Light Collector for Germicidal Irradiation on the Moon is a project whose aim is to collect Ultraviolet solar radiation and use it as a source to disinfect the re-circulating air of the human outposts. The most favourable positions where to place these collectors are over the peaks at the Moon’s poles, which have the peculiarity of being exposed to solar radiation most of the time. On August 2022, NASA communicated to have identified 13 candidate landing regions near the lunar South Pole for Artemis missions. Another advantage of the Moon is its low inclination to the ecliptic, which maintains the Sun’s apparent altitude inside a reduced angular range. For this reason, Ultraviolet solar radiation can be collected through a simplified Sun’s tracking collector or even a static collector and used to disinfect the recycled air. Fluid-dynamic and optical simulations have been performed to support the proposed idea. The expected inactivation rates for some airborne pathogens, either common or found on the International Space Station, are reported and compared with the proposed device efficiency. The results show that it is possible to use Ultraviolet solar radiation directly for air disinfection inside the lunar outposts and deliver a healthy living environment to the astronauts.

Abstract: ARIEL, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, was selected as the fourth medium-class mission in ESA’s Cosmic Vision program. ARIEL is based on a 1 m class telescope optimized for spectroscopy in the waveband between 1.95 and 7.8 micron and operating in cryogenic conditions. Fabrication of the 1.1 m aluminum primary mirror for the ARIEL telescope requires technological advances in the three areas of substrate thermal stabilization, optical surface polishing and coating. This article describes the qualification of the three procedures that have been set up and tested to demonstrate the readiness level of the technological processes employed. Substrate thermal stabilization is required to avoid deformations of the optical surface during cool down of the telescope to the operating temperature below 50 K. Purpose of the process is to release internal stress in the substrate that can cause such shape deformations. Polishing of large aluminum surfaces to optical quality is notoriously difficult due to softness of the material, and required setup and test of a specific polishing recipe capable of reducing residual surface shape errors while maintaining surface roughness below 10 nm RMS. Finally, optical coating with protected silver must be qualified for environmental stability, particularly at cryogenic temperatures, and uniformity. All processes described in this article have been applied to aluminum samples of up to 150 mm of diameter, leading the way to the planned final test on a full size demonstrator of the ARIEL primary mirror.

Abstract: Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, was adopted as the fourth medium-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision programme to be launched in 2029. During its 4-year mission, Ariel will study what exoplanets are made of, how they formed and how they evolve, by surveying a diverse sample of about 1000 extrasolar planets, simultaneously in visible and infrared wavelengths. It is the first mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, enabling planetary science far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System. The payload consists of an off-axis Cassegrain telescope (primary mirror 1100 mm x 730 mm ellipse) and two separate instruments (FGS and AIRS) covering simultaneously 0.5-7.8 micron spectral range. The satellite is best placed into an L2 orbit to maximise the thermal stability and the field of regard. The payload module is passively cooled via a series of V-Groove radiators; the detectors for the AIRS are the only items that require active cooling via an active Ne JT cooler. Abstract: The inactivation or airborne pathogens inside closed spaces is a critical issue that raised overwhelmingly during the current SARS-CoV 2 pandemic. Among the different technologies to achieve air sanification, the ultraviolet germicidal irradiation is a trending technique, also due to the fast development of more and more effective ultra-violet LED sources, that are expected to replace the mercury vapor lamps in the next few years. The positioning of LEDs inside cavities with highly reflective surfaces permits an enhancement of the internal irradiance and the development of compact devices. Optical simulations, by means of ray tracing, are fundamental, since an accurate irradiance estimation in presence of multiple internal reflections, scattering, light leaks outside the cav-ity and the sources angular emission distribution is not possible with only analytical calculations. Ray tracing permits to model the spatial irradiance inside the cavity by varying the components parameters to maximize the inactivation rate as a function of the air flow field. We discuss, on the basis of the experience on several related projects, the advantages of using the numerical approach to simulate these devices, focusing the attention onto the critical parameters which must be controlled to retrieve a reliable estimation of the system performance.

Abstract: The transmission of airborne pathogens represents a major issue to worldwide public health. Ultraviolet light irradiation can contribute to the sanification of air to reduce the pathogen transmission. This study concerns the design of a compact filter for airborne pathogen inactivation by means of UV-C LED sources, whose effective irradiance is enhanced thanks to high reflective surfaces. Ray-tracing and computational fluid dynamic simulations are both used to model the device and to maximize the performance inside the filter volume. Simulations foresee the inhibition of SARS-Cov 2 also in the case of high air fluxes. This study demonstrates that current available LED technology is effective for air sanification purposes.

Abstract: The Atmospheric Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, ARIEL, has been selected to be the next (M4) medium class space mission in the ESA Cosmic Vision programme. From launch in 2028, and during the following 4 years of operation, ARIEL will perform precise spectroscopy of the atmospheres of ~1000 known transiting exoplanets using its metre-class telescope. A three-band photometer and three spectrometers cover the 0.5 µm to 7.8 µm region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This paper gives an overview of the mission payload, including the telescope assembly, the FGS (Fine Guidance System) - which provides both pointing information to the spacecraft and scientific photometry and low-resolution spectrometer data, the ARIEL InfraRed Spectrometer (AIRS), and other payload infrastructure such as the warm electronics, structures and cryogenic cooling systems.

Abstract: Atmospheric Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large Survey (Ariel) has been adopted as ESA “Cosmic Vision” M4 mission, with launch scheduled for 2029. Ariel is based on a 1 m class telescope optimized for spectroscopy in the waveband between 1.95 and 7.8 μm, operating in cryogenic conditions in the range 40–50 K. Aluminum has been chosen as baseline material for the telescope mirrors substrate, with a metallic coating to enhance reflectivity and protect from oxidation and corrosion. As part of Phase B1, leading to SRR and eventually mission adoption, a protected silver coating with space heritage has been selected and will undergo a qualification process. A fundamental part of this process is assuring the integrity of the coating layer and performance compliance in terms of reflectivity at the telescope operating temperature. To this purpose, a set of flat sample disks have been cut and polished from the same baseline aluminum alloy as the telescope mirror substrates, and the selected protected silver coating has been applied to them by magnetron sputtering. The disks have then been subjected to a series of cryogenic temperature cycles to assess coating performance stability. This study presents the results of visual inspection, reflectivity measurements and atomic force microscopy (AFM) on the sample disks before and after the cryogenic cycles.

Abstract: Atmospheric Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large Survey (ARIEL) is the M4 ESA mission to launch in 2028. ARIEL is based on a 1 m class telescope optimized for spectroscopy in the waveband between 1.95 μm and 7.8 μm (main instrument), operating in cryogenic conditions in the range 50 - 60 K. For the main mirror substrate, the Aluminum 6061 alloy has been chosen as baseline material after a trade- off. The large size of the mirror however (0.6 square meters) presents specific production challenges concerning opto-mechanical stability in cryogenic applications. To minimize risk, the machining, polishing, thermal treatments and coating processes will first be tested on flat samples of 150 mm of diameter and then applied to a full-size demonstrator mirror, before finalizing the design and producing the flight mirror. This study, following a review of existing literature on fabrication of Al 6061 mirrors for spaceborne IR applications will characterize the optical properties of the samples after each phase of thermal treatment with the goal of determining an optimal process for material stress release, figuring and surface finishing and final optical stability in the operating cryogenic environment.

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the major next-generation observatory for ground-based very-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy. It will improve the sensitivity of current ground-based instruments by a factor of five to twenty, depending on the energy, greatly improving both their angular and energy resolutions over four decades in energy (from 20 GeV to 300 TeV). This achievement will be possible by using tens of imaging Cherenkov telescopes of three successive sizes. They will be arranged into two arrays, one per hemisphere, located on the La Palma island (Spain) and in Paranal (Chile). Abstract: International audience; ARIEL (the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey) has been selected by ESA as the next medium-class science mission (M4), expected to be launched in 2028. The mission will be devoted to observing spectroscopically in the infrared a large population of warm and hot transiting exoplanets (temperatures from 500 K to 3000 K) in our nearby Galactic neighborhood, opening a new discovery space in the field of extrasolar planets and enabling the understanding of the physics and chemistry of these far away worlds. ARIEL was selected for implementation by ESA in March 2018 from three candidate missions that underwent parallel phase A studies. This paper gives an overview of the design at the end of phase A and discusses plans for its evolution during phase B1, in the run-up to mission adoption. ARIEL is based on a 1 m class telescope feeding two instruments: a moderate resolution spectrometer covering the wavelengths from 1.95 to 7.8 microns; and a three-channel photometer (which also acts as a fine guidance sensor) with bands between 0.5 and 1.2 microns combined with a low resolution spectrometer covering 1.25 to 1.9 microns. During its 3.5 years of operation from an L2 orbit, ARIEL will continuously observe exoplanets transiting their host star. This paper presents an overall view of the integrated design of the payload proposed for this mission. The design tightly integrates the various payload elements in order to allow the exacting photometric stability targets to be met, while providing simultaneous spectral and photometric data from the visible to the mid-infrared. We identify and discuss the key requirements and technical challenges for the payload and describe the trade-offs that were assessed during phase A, culminating in the baseline design for phase B1. We show how the design will be taken forward to produce a fully integrated and calibrated payload for ARIEL that can be built within the mission and programmatic constraints and will meet the challenging scientific performance required for transit spectroscopy.

Abstract: The Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanets Large-survey (ARIEL) is a space project selected by the European Space Agency for the Phase A study in the context of the M4 mission within the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme. ARIEL will probe the chemical and physical properties of a large number of known exoplanets by observing spectroscopically their atmosphere, to extend our knowledge of how planetary systems form and evolve. To achieve its scientific objectives, the mission is designed as a dedicated 3.5-years survey for transit and eclipse spectroscopy, with an instrumental layout based on a 1-m class telescope feeding two spectrometer channels that cover the band 1.95 to 7.8 μm and four photometric channels in the visible to near-IR range. The high sensitivity requirements of the mission need an extremely stable thermo-mechanical platform. In this paper we describe the thermal architecture of the payload and discuss the main requirements that drive the design. The ARIEL thermal configuration is based on a passive and active cooling approach. Passive cooling is achieved by a V-Groove based design that exploits the L2 orbit favorable thermal conditions. The telescope and the optical bench are passively cooled to a temperature close to 50K to achieve the required sensitivity and stability. The photometric detectors are maintained at the operating temperature of 50K by a dedicated radiator coupled to cold space. The IR spectroscopic channel detectors require a lower temperature reference. This colder stage is provided by an active cooling system based on a Neon Joule-Thomson cold end, fed by a mechanical compressor, able to reach temperatures lower than 30K. Thermal stability of the telescope and detector units is one of the main drivers of the design. The periodical perturbations due to orbital changes, to the active cooling or to other internal instabilities make the temperature control one of the most critical issues of the whole architecture. The thermal control system design, based on a combination of passive and active solutions aimed at maintaining the required stability at the telescope and detector stages level, is described. We report here about the baseline thermal architecture at the end of the Phase A, together with the main trade-offs needed to enable the ARIEL exciting science in a technically feasible payload design. Thermal modeling results and preliminary performance predictions in terms of steady state and transient behavior are also discussed.

Abstract: After the development of a BoGEMMS (Bologna Geant4 Multi-Mission Simulator) template for the back- ground study of X-ray telescopes, a new extension is built for the simulation of a Gamma-ray space mission (e.g. AGILE, Fermi), conceived to work as a common, multi-purpose framework for the present and future electron tracking gamma-ray space telescopes. The Gamma-ray extension involves the Geant4 mass model, the physics list and, more important, the production and treatment of the simulation output. From the user point of view, the simulation set-up follows a tree structure, with the main level being the selection of the simulation framework (the general, X-ray or gamma-ray application) and the secondary levels being the detailed configuration of the geometry and the output format. The BoGEMMS application to Gamma-ray missions has been used to evaluate the instrument performances of a new generation of Gamma-ray tele- scopes (e.g. Gamma-Light), and a full simulation of the AGILE mission is currently under construction, to scientifically validate and calibrate the simulator with real in-space data sets. A complete description of the BoGEMMS Gamma-ray framework is presented here, with an overview of the achieved results for the potential application to present and future experiments (e.g., GAMMA-400 and Gamma-Light). The evaluation of the photon conversion efficiency to beta particle pairs and the comparison to tabulated data allows the preliminary physical validation of the overall architecture. The Gamma-ray module application for the study of the Gamma-Light instrument performances is reported as reference test case.

Abstract: The Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanets Large-survey (ARIEL)1 Mission has been recently selected by ESA as the fourth medium-class Mission (M4) in the framework of the Cosmic Vision Program. The goal of ARIEL is to investigate, thanks to VIS photometry and IR spectroscopy, the atmospheres of several hundreds of planets orbiting nearby stars in order to address the fundamental questions on how planetary systems form and evolve.2 During its four-years mission, ARIEL will observe several hundreds of exoplanets ranging from Jupiter- and Neptune-size down to super-Earth and Earth-size with its 1 meter-class telescope.3 The analysis of spectra and photometric data will allow to extract the chemical fingerprints of gases and condensates in the planets atmospheres, including the elemental composition for the most favorable targets. It will also enable the study of thermal and scattering properties of the atmosphere as the planet orbits around its parent star.

Abstract: THESEUS is a space mission concept aimed at exploiting Gamma-Ray Bursts for investigating the early Universe and at providing a substantial advancement of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics. These goals will be achieved through a unique combination of instruments allowing GRB and X-ray transient detection over a broad field of view (more than 1sr) with 0.5¿1 arcmin localization, an energy band extending from several MeV down to 0.3¿keV and high sensitivity to transient sources in the soft X-ray domain, as well as on-board prompt (few minutes) follow-up with a 0.7¿m class IR telescope with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. THESEUS will be perfectly suited for addressing the main open issues in cosmology such as, e.g., star formation rate and metallicity evolution of the inter-stellar and intra-galactic medium up to redshift 10, signatures of Pop III stars, sources and physics of re-ionization, and the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function. In addition, it will provide unprecedented capability to monitor the X-ray variable sky, thus detecting, localizing, and identifying the electromagnetic counterparts to sources of gravitational radiation, which may be routinely detected in the late ¿20s/early ¿30s by next generation facilities like aLIGO/ aVirgo, eLISA, KAGRA, and Einstein Telescope. Abstract: PKS 0521-36 is an active galactic nucleus (AGN) with uncertain classification. We investigate the properties of this source from radio to γ-rays. The broad emission lines in the optical and ultraviolet bands and steep radio spectrum indicate a possible classification as an intermediate object between broad-line radio galaxies (BLRG) and steep spectrum radio quasars (SSRQ). On pc-scales PKS 0521-36 shows a knotty structure similar to misaligned AGN. The core dominance and the γ-ray properties are similar to those estimated for other SSRQ and BLRG detected in γ-rays, suggesting an intermediate viewing angle with respect to the observer. In this context the flaring activity detected from this source by Fermi-Large Area Telescope between 2010 June and 2012 February is very intriguing. We discuss the γ-ray emission of this source in the framework of the structured jet scenario, comparing the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the flaring state in 2010 June with that of a low state. We present three alternative models corresponding to three different choices of the viewing angles θv = 6°, 15°, and 20°. We obtain a good fit for the first two cases, but the SED obtained with θv = 15° if observed at a small angle does not resemble that of a typical blazar since the synchrotron emission should dominate by a large factor (̃100) the inverse Compton component. This suggests that a viewing angle between 6° and 15° is preferred, with the rapid variability observed during γ-ray flares favouring a smaller angle. However, we cannot rule out that PKS 0521-36 is the misaligned counterpart of a synchrotron-dominated blazar.

Abstract: Supernova remnants (SNRs) are among the most important targets for γ-ray observatories. Being prominent non-thermal sources, they are very likely responsible for the acceleration of the bulk of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs). To firmly establish the SNR paradigm for the origin of cosmic rays, it should be confirmed that protons are indeed accelerated in, and released from, SNRs with the appropriate flux and spectrum. This can be done by detailed theoretical models which account for microphysics of acceleration and various radiation processes of hadrons and leptons. The current generation of Cherenkov telescopes has insufficient sensitivity to constrain theoretical models. A new facility, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), will have superior capabilities and may finally resolve this long standing issue of high-energy astrophysics. We want to assess the capabilities of CTA to reveal the physics of various types of SNRs in the initial 2000 years of their evolution. During this time, the efficiency to accelerate cosmic rays is highest. We perform time-dependent simulations of the hydrodynamics, the magnetic fields, the cosmic-ray acceleration, and the non-thermal emission for type Ia, Ic and IIP SNRs. We calculate the CTA response to the γ-ray emission from these SNRs for various ages and distances, and we perform a realistic analysis of the simulated data. We derive distance limits for the detectability and resolvability of these SNR types at several ages. We test the ability of CTA to reconstruct their morphological and spectral parameters as a function of their distance. Finally, we estimate how well CTA data will constrain the theoretical models. Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) represents the next generation of ground-based observatories for very high energy gamma-ray astronomy. The CTA will consist of two arrays at two different sites, one in the northern and one in the southern hemisphere. The current CTA design foresees, in the southern site, the installation of many tens of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes of three different classes, namely large, medium and small, so defined in relation to their mirror area; the northern hemisphere array would consist of few tens of the two larger telescope types. The Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) is developing the Cherenkov Small Size Telescope ASTRI SST- 2M end-to-end prototype telescope within the framework of the International Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) project. The ASTRI prototype has been installed at the INAF observing station located in Serra La Nave on Mt. Etna, Italy. Furthermore a mini-array, composed of nine of ASTRI telescopes, has been proposed to be installed at the Southern CTA site. Among the several different infrastructures belonging the ASTRI project, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment is dedicated to operations of computing and data storage, as well as the control of the entire telescope, and it is designed to achieve the maximum efficiency for all performance requirements. Thus a complete and stand-alone computer centre has been designed and implemented. The goal is to obtain optimal ICT equipment, with an adequate level of redundancy, that might be scaled up for the ASTRI mini-array, taking into account the necessary control, monitor and alarm system requirements. In this contribution we present the ICT equipment currently installed at the Serra La Nave observing station where the ASTRI SST-2M prototype will be operated. The computer centre and the control room are described with particular emphasis on the Local Area Network scheme, the computing and data storage system, and the telescope control and monitoring.

Abstract: In the framework of the international Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory, the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) has developed a dual mirror, small sized, telescope prototype (ASTRI SST-2M), installed in Italy at the INAF observing station located at Serra La Nave, Mt. Etna. The ASTRI SST-2M prototype is the basis of the ASTRI telescopes that will form the mini-array proposed to be installed at the CTA southern site during its preproduction phase. This contribution presents the solutions implemented to realize the monitoring system for the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure of the ASTRI SST-2M prototype. The ASTRI ICT monitoring system has been implemented by integrating traditional tools used in computer centers, with specific custom tools which interface via Open Platform Communication Unified Architecture (OPC UA) to the Alma Common Software (ACS) that is used to operate the ASTRI SST-2M prototype. The traditional monitoring tools are based on Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and commercial solutions and features embedded in the devices themselves. They generate alerts by email and SMS. The specific custom tools convert the SNMP protocol into the OPC UA protocol and implement an OPC UA server. The server interacts with an OPC UA client implemented in an ACS component that, through the ACS Notification Channel, sends monitor data and alerts to the central console of the ASTRI SST-2M prototype. The same approach has been proposed also for the monitoring of the CTA onsite ICT infrastructures.

Abstract: The Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) is leading the ASTRI project within the ambitious Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the next generation of ground-based observatories for very high energy gamma-ray astronomy. In the framework of the small sized telescopes (SST), a first goal of the ASTRI project is the realization of an end-to-end prototype in dual-mirror configuration (2M) with the camera composed of a matrix of Silicon photo-multiplier sensors managed by innovative front-end and back-end electronics. The prototype, named ASTRI SST-2M, is installed in Italy at the INAF "M.G. Fracastoro" observing station located at Serra La Nave, 1735 m a.s.l. on Mount Etna, Sicily. As a second step, the ASTRI project is focused on the implementation of a mini-array composed at least of nine ASTRI telescopes and proposed to be placed at the CTA southern site. This paper outlines the design of the camera server software that will be installed on the ASTRI mini-array. The software is based on the version installed on the ASTRI SST-2M prototype operating in a single telescope configuration. The migration from single telescope to mini-array context has required additional interfaces in order to guarantee high interoperability with other software and hardware components. In the mini-array configuration each camera communicates with its own camera server via a dedicated high rate data link. The primary goal of the camera server is to acquire the bulk data, packet by packet, without any data loss and to timestamp each packet very precisely. During array operation, the camera server receives from the SoftWare Array Trigger (SWAT) the list of science events that participate in stereo triggered events. These science events, and all others that are flagged either by the camera as interleaved calibration or by the camera server as possible single-muon events, are sent to the Array DAQ. All remaining science events will be discarded. A suitable buffer is provided to perform this processing on all the incoming event packets. The camera server provides interfaces to the array control software to allow for monitoring and control during array operations. In this paper we present the design of the camera server software with particular emphasis on the external interfaces. In addition, we report the results of the first integration activities and performance tests.

35. Monte Carlo simulations of soft proton flares: testing the physics with XMM-Newton

Abstract: Low energy protons (< 100 - 300 keV) in the Van Allen belt and the outer regions can enter the field of view of X-ray focusing telescopes, interact with the Wolter-I optics, and reach the focal plane. The funneling of soft protons was discovered after the damaging of the Chandra/ACIS Front-Illuminated CCDs in September 1999 after the first passages through the radiation belt. The use of special filters protects the XMM-Newton focal plane below an altitude of 70000 km, but above this limit the effect of soft protons is still present in the form of sudden ares in the count rate of the EPIC instruments that can last from hundreds of seconds to hours and can hardly be disentangled from X-ray photons, causing the loss of large amounts of observing time. The accurate characterization of (i) the distribution of the soft proton population, (ii) the physics interaction at play, and (iii) the effect on the focal plane, are mandatory to evaluate the background and design the proton magnetic diverter on board future X-ray focusing telescopes (e.g. ATHENA). Several solutions have been proposed so far for the primary population and the physics interaction, however the difficulty in precise angle and energy measurements in laboratory makes the smoking gun still unclear. Since the only real data available is the XMM-Newton spectrum of soft proton flares in orbit, we try to characterize the input proton population and the physics interaction by simulating, using the BoGEMMS framework, the proton interaction with a simplified model of the X-ray mirror module and the focal plane, and comparing the result with a real observation. The analysis of ten orbits of observations of the EPIC/pn instrument show that the detection of flares in regions far outside the radiation belt is largely influenced by the different orientation of the Earth's magnetosphere respect with XMM-Newton'os orbit, confirming the solar origin of the soft proton population. The Equator-S proton spectrum at 70000 km altitude is used for the proton population entering the optics, where a combined multiple and Firsov scattering is used as physics interaction. If the thick filter is used, the soft protons in the 30-70 keV energy range are the main contributors to the simulated spectrum below 10 keV. We are able to reproduce the proton vignetting observed in real data-sets, with a 50% decrease from the inner to the outer region, but a maximum flux of 0:01 counts cm2 s-1 keV-1 is obtained below 10 keV, about 5 times lower than the EPIC/MOS detection and 100 times lower than the EPIC/pn one. Given the high variability of the are intensity, we conclude that an average spectrum, based on the analysis of a full season of soft proton events is required to compare Monte Carlo simulations with real events.

Abstract: ARIEL (the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey) is one of the three candidates for the next ESA medium-class science mission (M4) expected to be launched in 2026. This mission will be devoted to observing spectroscopically in the infrared a large population of warm and hot transiting exoplanets (temperatures from ~500 K to ~3000 K) in our nearby Galactic neighborhood, opening a new discovery space in the field of extrasolar planets and enabling the understanding of the physics and chemistry of these far away worlds. The three candidate missions for M4 are now in a Phase A study which will run until mid-2017 at which point one mission will be selected for implementation. ARIEL is based on a 1-m class telescope feeding both a moderate resolution spectrometer covering the wavelengths from 1.95 to 7.8 microns, and a four channel photometer (which also acts as a Fine Guidance Sensor) with bands between 0.55 and 1.65 microns. During its 3.5 years of operation from an L2 orbit, ARIEL will continuously observe exoplanets transiting their host star.

Abstract: We present all the publicly available data, from optical/UV wavelengths (UVOT) to X-rays (XRT, BAT), obtained from Swift observations of the blazar PKS 2155-304, performed in response to the rapid alert sent out after the strong TeV activity (up to 17 Crab flux level at E > 200 GeV) at the end of July 2006. The X-ray flux increased by a factor of 5 in the 0.3-10 keV energy band and by a factor of 1.5 at optical/UV wavelengths, with roughly one day of delay. The comparison of the spectral energy distribution built with data quasi-simultaneous to the TeV detections shows an increase of the overall normalization with respect to archival data, but only a small shift of the frequency of the synchrotron peak that remains consistent with the values reported in past observations when the TeV activity was much weaker., 13 pages, 3 figures. Abstract: The Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory (EChO) is a space mission dedicated to investigate exoplanetary atmospheres by undertaking spectroscopy of transiting planets in a wide spectral region from the visible to the mid-InfraRed (IR). The high sensitivity and the long exposures required by the mission need an extremely stable thermo-mechanical platform. The instrument is passively cooled down to approximately 40 K, together with the telescope assembly, by a V-Groove based design that exploits the L2 orbit favourable thermal conditions. The visible and short-IR wavelength detectors are maintained at the operating temperature of 40 K by a dedicated radiator coupled to the cold space. The mid-IR channels, require a lower operating temperature and are cooled by an active refrigerator: a 28 K Neon Joule-Thomson (JT) cold end, fed by a mechanical compressor. Temperature stability is one of the challenging issues of the whole architecture: periodical perturbations must be controlled before they reach the sensitive units of the instrument. An efficient thermal control system is required: the design is based on a combination of passive and active solutions. In this paper we describe the thermal architecture of the payload with the main cryo-chain stages and their temperature control systems. The requirements that drive the design and the trade-offs needed to enable the EChO exciting science in a technically feasible payload design are discussed. Thermal modelling results and preliminary performance predictions in terms of steady state and transient conditions are also reported. This paper is presented on behalf of the EChO Consortium.

Abstract: Evidence for both red- and blue-shifted absorption lines due to ionized Fe in the X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 are reported. These features appear to be transient on time-scales as short as ~20 ks, and have been observed with two different satellites, BeppoSAX and XMM-Newton. The red- and blue-shifted lines are found at E~5.5 keV and ~8.1-8.3 keV (rest-frame), respectively. The first is seen in one out of six BeppoSAX observations, the latter is seen by both satellites. Under the assumption that the absorption is due to either H- or He-like Iron, the implied velocities for the absorbing matter are v~0.15-0.2 c, in both outward and inward directions. An alternative explanation in terms of gravitational red-shift for the ~5.5 keV line cannot be ruled out with the current data. We argue, however, that the temporal patterns and sporadic nature of the lines are more easily reconciled with models which predict important radial motions close to the central black hole, such as the ``aborted jet'' model, the ``thundercloud'' model, or magneto-hydrodynamical models of jets and accretion-disks., Comment: 9 pages, 3 tables, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: We present BeppoSAX and XMM-Newton observations of Mrk 231. These observations and in particular the BeppoSAX PDS data allowed us to unveil, for the first time, the highly absorbed (NH∼2×1024 cm−2) AGN component. We find that: a) the AGN powering Mrk 231 has an intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity of 1+1−0.5×1044 erg s−1; b) the strong starburst activity contributes significantly in the 0.1-10 keV energy range. We propose that the starburst activity strongly contributes to the far infrared luminosity of Mrk 231; this is also suggested by the multiwavelength properties of Mrk 231.

Abstract: The Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 (z≃0.008, L B ∼4×10 44 erg/s) was observed by XMM-Newton on 2000 June 11-12, for a total of 95 ks. The source shows high flux and spectral variability down to timescales of t ∼300 s. This work presents the results of the time-resolved spectral analysis of the brightest flare (a factor of 2 variation in ∼1000 s) which occurred during the observation. The analysis of such flare indicates: 1) a softening of the X-ray spectrum in phase with the flux, and 2) a soft-to-hard time lag of about ∼ 600 s. A strong and complex Fe-Kαemission feature is detected ∼ 3000 s after the flare. The same feature was not present before and during the flare. This may indicate that the Fe line was produced as a consequence of the flare. The present analysis allows the formulation of a different hypothesis for the physical mechanisms responsible for the X-ray emission.

Abstract: We report the first high-energy survey catalog obtained with the IBIS gamma-ray imager on board INTEGRAL. The analysis has been performed on the first-year Core Program ISGRI data comprising both Galactic Plane Scan and Galactic Centre Deep Exposure pointings for a total exposure time exceeding 5 Ms. This initial survey has revealed the presence of ~120 sources detected with the unprecedented sensitivity of ~1 mcrab in the energy range 20-100 keV. Each source is located to an accuracy between 1' and 3', depending on its brightness. The outstanding IBIS capability to locate soft γ-ray emitters has allowed us to identify most of the detected sources with already known Galactic X-ray binary systems, while 28 of the objects are of unknown nature.

Abstract: Europe is one of the major partners building the International Space Station (ISS) and European industry, together with ESA, is responsible for many station components including the Columbus Orbital Facility, the Automated Transport Vehicle, two connecting modules and the European Robotic Arm. Together with this impressive list of contributions there is a strong desire within the ESA Member States to benefit from this investment by utilizing the unique capabilities of the ISS to perform world-class science. XEUS is one of the astronomical applications being studied by ESA to utilize the capabilities of the ISS. XEUS will be a long-term X-ray observatory with an initial mirror area of 6 m 2 at 1 keV that will be expanded to 30 m 2 following a visit to the ISS. The 1 keV spatial resolution is expected to be 2–5″ half-energy-width. XEUS will consist of separate detector and mirror spacecraft (MSC) aligned by active control to provide a focal length of 50 m. A new detector spacecraft, complete with the next generation of instruments, will also be added after visiting the ISS. The limiting 0.1–2.5 keV sensitivity will then be 4 × 10 −18 erg cm −2 s −1 , around 200 times better than XMM-Newton, allowing XEUS to study the properties of the hot baryons and dark matter at high redshift.

Abstract: The IBIS telescope is a high angular resolution gamma-ray imager due to be launched on the INTEGRAL satellite on October 17, 2002. The scientific goal of IBIS is to study astrophysical processes from celestial sources and diffuse regions in the hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray domains. IBIS features a coded aperture imaging system and a novel large area (∼3000 cm 2 ) multilayer pixellated detector which utilises both cadmium telluride (16,384 detectors) and caesium iodide elements (4096 detectors) surrounded by a BGO active veto shield. We present an overview of, and preliminary analysis from, the IBIS calibration campaign. The performance of each pixel has been characterised, and hence the scientific performance of the IBIS detector system as a whole can now be established.

Abstract: Using a long (150 ks) broadband (0.1-40 keV) BeppoSAX observation of the merging starburst system Arp 299 (=IC 694 + NGC 3690), we found the first unambiguous evidence of the presence of a deeply buried (NH 2.5 × 1024 cm-2) active galactic nucleus (AGN) having an intrinsic luminosity of L0.5-100 keV 1.9 × 1043 ergs s-1. The X-ray spectral properties of this AGN are discussed in detail, as well as the thermal component detected at soft X-ray energies, which, most likely, is associated with the starburst.

Abstract: Position sensitive detectors coupled to coded masks are used for imaging in high energy astronomy. PICsIT is the γ-ray position sensitive detector of the IBIS telescope to be flown onboard the INTEGRAL satellite in 2001. PICsIT detector functionalities and scientific performances as a whole are described in details elsewhere in this Conference (Labanti et al. (Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A, this conference)). In this work, we present the aim, methodology, and results of the tests and calibrations performed on the first qualification lot of 136 PICsIT pixels carried out at SCIONIX laboratories in The Netherlands, in April 1999. Before being accepted for PICsIT, each detection unit has in fact to be fully characterized in terms of energy resolution and lower energy threshold. The principal aim of PICsIT pixel qualification campaign described in this work has been to measure the key parameters of each CsI(Tl)+photodiode detection unit: CsI(Tl) crystals light output, gain variation with temperature, energy resolution degradation due to scintillation light production and collection, inhomogeneity in the crystal, and the variation of these quantities after a thermo-vacuum stress treatment.

Abstract: Multiwavelength variability of blazars offers indirect insight into their powerful engines and on the mechanisms through which energy is propagated from the centre down the jet. The BL Lac object Mkn 421 is a TeV emitter, a bright blazar at all wavelengths, and therefore an excellent target for variability studies. Mkn 421 was observed by INTEGRAL and Fermi-LAT in an active state on 16-21 April 2013. Well sampled optical, soft, and hard X-ray light curves show the presence of two flares. The average flux in the 20-100 keV range is 9.1e-11 erg/s/cm2 (~4.5 mCrab) and the nuclear average apparent magnitude, corrected for Galactic extinction, is V ~12.2. In the time-resolved X-ray spectra (3.5-60 keV), which are described by broken power laws and, marginally better, by log-parabolic laws, we see a hardening that correlates with flux increase, as expected in refreshed energy injections in a population of electrons that later cool via synchrotron radiation. The hardness ratios between the JEM-X fluxes in two different bands and between the JEM-X and IBIS/ISGRI fluxes confirm this trend. During the observation, the variability level increases monotonically from the optical to the hard X-rays, while the large LAT errors do not allow a significant assessment of the MeV-GeV variability. The cross-correlation analysis during the onset of the most prominent flare suggests a monotonically increasing delay of the lower frequency emission with respect to that at higher frequency, with a maximum time-lag of about 70 minutes, that is however not well constrained. The spectral energy distributions from the optical to the TeV domain are satisfactorily described by homogeneous models of blazar emission based on synchrotron radiation and synchrotron self-Compton scattering, except in the state corresponding to the LAT softest spectrum and highest flux., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, in press in A&A
