In this study, Batem Pınarı, Interdonato, Meyer, and Ak Limon lemon cultivars were studied. Lemon peel's essential oils were obtained by two different methods (hydrodistillation and cold pressing) during four different harvest periods for each cultivar. Essential oil content, density, refractive index, optical activity, and composition were evaluated. The highest essential oil amount was found in the Interdonato cultivar (2.54%) and the lowest in Ak Limon (1.37%). The highest density value was 0.8471 g/mL (Ak Limon) and the lowest was 0.8423 g/mL (Meyer). Essential oil densities obtained by cold pressing were higher than those obtained by hydrodistillation. The highest refractive index values were determined for Batem Pınarı and Meyer (1.4747), and the lowest were determined for Ak Limon (1.4740). The refractive index values obtained by cold pressing were higher than those obtained by hydrodistillation. Optical activity values were found to be highest in Ak Limon and lowest in Batem Pınarı, and higher following hydrodistillation than cold pressing. The essential oil compositions of the samples showed significant differences depending on the cultivar and isolation method. Limonene, the highest component proportionally, composed 76.0%–89.0% of samples. The highest limonene content was determined for Ak Limon (88.7%), and the lowest for Batem Pınarı (76.7%). Limonene content did not change significantly between hydrodistillation (82.2%) and cold press (82.2%) isolation methods. Findings show that there is significant variation in quality parameters of lemon peel essential oils.

The main aim of this study was to determine the effects of different processing methods on the antinutritional factors of mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) of the Pusa Baisakhi variety. The values obtained were as follows: tannin 477 mg/100 g, oxalate 227 mg/100 g, phytate 627 mg/100 g, total phenolic content 772 mg/100 g, and saponin 2618 mg/100 g in raw mungbean, on a dry basis. The maximum reduction in tannin (63%) was observed when the mungbean was processed by the soaking and dehulling processes. The reduction achieved by soaking for 12 h and germination for 36 h was the most effective method in reducing the phytate content of mungbean (39%). The maximum reduction in saponin (22%) and oxalate (71%) was observed by autoclaving the soaked seeds. In comparison to other methods, roasting was the least effective method to reduce tannin, phytate, and oxalate. Autoclaving of the soaked seeds was the most effective method for reducing the antinutrients of mungbean among the cooking treatments. The processing methods such as soaking, dehulling, germination, roasting, raw open cooking, raw autoclaving, soaked open cooking, and autoclaving of soaked seeds significantly reduced the antinutrient contents of mungbean (p < 0.05). However, the effects of the treatments combined were more effective than those of the single process.

Abstract Background Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a major cause of sepsis and meningitis in newborns. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends to pregnant women, between 35 and 37 weeks of gestation, universal vaginal-rectal screening for GBS colonization, aimed at intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP). The latter is the only currently available and highly effective method against early onset GBS neonatal infections. Since the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the preventive measures implemented to mitigate the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection led to the reduction in the access to many health facilities and services, including the obstetric and perinatal ones. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of maternal GBS colonization, as well as use of IAP and incidence of episodes of neonatal GBS infection when antibiotic prophylaxis has not been carried out in colonized and/or at risk subjects, in a population of pregnant women during (years 2020–2021) and after (year 2022) the COVID-19 pandemic, also with the aim to establish possible epidemiological and clinical differences in the two subjects’ groups. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of pregnant women admitted to, and delivering, at the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Unit, Department of Sciences for Health Promotion and Mother and Child Care, of the University Hospital of Palermo, Italy, from 01.01.2020 to 31.12.2022. For each of them, we recorded pertinent socio-demographic information, clinical data related to pregnancy, delivery and peripartum, and specifically execution and status of vaginal and rectal swab test for GBS detection, along with eventual administration and modality of IAP. The neonatal outcome was investigated in all cases at risk (positive maternal swabs status for GBS, either vaginal or rectal, with or without/incomplete IAP, preterm labor and/or delivery, premature rupture of membranes ≥ 18 h, previous pregnancy ended with neonatal early onset GBS disease [EOD], urine culture positive for GBS in any trimester of current gestation, intrapartum temperature ≥ 38 °C and/or any clinical/laboratory signs of suspected chorioamnionitis). The data concerning mothers and neonates at risk, observed during the pandemic (years 2020–2021), were compared with those of both subjects’ groups with overlapping risk factors recorded in the following period (year 2022). The chi squared test has been applied in order to find out the relationship between pregnant women with GBS colonization receiving IAP and outcome of their neonates. Results The total source population of the study consisted of 2109 pregnant women, in addition to their 2144 newborns. Our analysis, however, focused on women and neonates with risk factors. The vaginal-rectal swab for GBS was performed in 1559 (73.92%) individuals. The test resulted positive in 178 cases overall (11.42% of those undergoing the screening). Amongst our whole sample of 2109 subjects, 298 women had an indication for IAP (vaginal and/or rectal GBS colonization, previous pregnancy ended with neonatal GBS EOD, urine culture positive for GBS in any trimester of current gestation, and unknown GBS status at labor onset with at least any among delivery at

Accepting Rienzo Pellegrini’s call to delve deeper into Pasolini’s translations of twentieth-century Spanish poets, this research aims to investigate a largely overlooked aspect, perhaps the least known, of Pasolini’s wide production. Placed between the categories of «tempo del mito» and «tempo della storia», in which Guido Santato includes Pasolini’s dialectal production, the translations, including the Lorchian versions can be traced back to an aesthetic and cultural project which should have been a considerable part of a poetic anthology entitled La zoja. Despite its significant incompleteness, the manuscripts and typescripts of this anthology of contemporary poets, with particular reference to the Spanish poets of the 20th century, allow us to trace some sketches of Pasolini as a translator, or rather poet-translator.

Abstract Background Surfactant is a well-established therapy for preterm neonates affected by respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). The goals of different methods of surfactant administration are to reduce the duration of mechanical ventilation and the severity of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD); however, the optimal administration method remains unknown. This study compares the effectiveness of the INtubate-RECruit-SURfactant-Extubate (IN-REC-SUR-E) technique with the less-invasive surfactant administration (LISA) technique, in increasing BPD-free survival of preterm infants. This is an international unblinded multicenter randomized controlled study in which preterm infants will be randomized into two groups to receive IN-REC-SUR-E or LISA surfactant administration. Methods In this study, 382 infants born at 24+0–27+6 weeks’ gestation, not intubated in the delivery room and failing nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) or nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) during the first 24 h of life, will be randomized 1:1 to receive IN-REC-SUR-E or LISA surfactant administration. The primary outcome is a composite outcome of death or BPD at 36 weeks’ postmenstrual age. The secondary outcomes are BPD at 36 weeks’ postmenstrual age; death; pulse oximetry/fraction of inspired oxygen; severe intraventricular hemorrhage; pneumothorax; duration of respiratory support and oxygen therapy; pulmonary hemorrhage; patent ductus arteriosus undergoing treatment; percentage of infants receiving more doses of surfactant; periventricular leukomalacia, severe retinopathy of prematurity, necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis; total in-hospital stay; systemic postnatal steroids; neurodevelopmental outcomes; and respiratory function testing at 24 months of age. Randomization will be centrally provided using both stratification and permuted blocks with random block sizes and block order. Stratification factors will include center and gestational age (24+0 to 25+6 weeks or 26+0 to 27+6 weeks). Analyses will be conducted in both intention-to-treat and per-protocol populations, utilizing a log-binomial regression model that corrects for stratification factors to estimate the adjusted relative risk (RR). Discussion This trial is designed to provide robust data on the best method of surfactant administration in spontaneously breathing preterm infants born at 24+0–27+6 weeks’ gestation affected by RDS and failing nCPAP or NIPPV during the first 24 h of life, comparing IN-REC-SUR-E to LISA technique, in increasing BPD-free survival at 36 weeks’ postmenstrual age of life. The present investigation was performed to evaluate the effects of various synthetic antioxidants (vitamin A, vitamin E, β-carotene, and BHT) on the oxidation of sunflower oil subjected to accelerated thermal storage at 60 °C for three months (12 weeks). The performance of the antioxidants studied was evaluated using several quality parameters: the free fatty acid value (FFA), primary oxidation (via the peroxide value (PV) and K232 value), secondary oxidation products (via the anisidine value (p-AV) and K270 value), and the total oxidation value (TOTOX). The fatty acid composition (FAC), oxidizability value (COX), iodine value (IV), and pigment content (chlorophyll and carotenoid) were also evaluated. The results revealed that the control sample of sunflower oil exhibited higher susceptibility to oxidative deterioration. Antioxidants at 200 ppm were more effective in preserving the oxidative stability of sunflower oil subjected to accelerated storage compared to the control oil. The smallest increases in all stability parameter indexes were recorded for antioxidant-supplemented sunflower oil. However, the IV and chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were reduced. At 200 ppm, vitamin E and β-carotene showed the greatest stability in sunflower oil, while their combination with vitamin A at 100 ppm of each showed the lowest stability. In addition, synthetic antioxidants provided greater protection against the degradation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). The highest level of PUFA degradation was recorded in the control oil, followed by the oil containing vitamin A. In conclusion, adding synthetic antioxidants to sunflower oil improves its stability during storage. However, some authors associated these molecules with a health risk due to carcinogenic effects as these molecules have been listed as “Generally Recognized As Safe” (GRAS).

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is revolutionizing the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders by leveraging the gut microbiome in innovative ways. This systematic review evaluates the clinical effectiveness and safety of FMT across various medical conditions, offering insights into its therapeutic potential and limitations. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and ClinicalTrials.gov from January 2000 to December 2023 identified 97 relevant studies on FMT's efficacy, safety, and microbiome changes after eliminating duplicates. FMT has demonstrated high success rates, particularly in treating recurrent and refractory Clostridium difficile infections (CDI), with up to 90% effectiveness, establishing it as a primary treatment for antibiotic-resistant cases. FMT’s applications are expanding to inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, as well as metabolic disorders and neuropsychiatric conditions. Remission rates for IBD range from 37-45%, with outcomes influenced by donor characteristics, stool preparation, and disease subtype. with mild, self-limiting side effects such as transient diarrhea and abdominal cramping. However, rare serious adverse events underscore the need for rigorous donor screening and standardized preparation protocols to mitigate risks. FMT’s ability to restore healthy gut flora highlights its promise in both gastrointestinal and systemic disease management. However, further research is essential to establish optimized procedures, standardized guidelines, and long-term safety data to facilitate its integration into mainstream medical practice.

Abstract Background The identification and staging of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) represent a challenge, especially in the prodromal stage of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), when cognitive changes can be subtle. Worldwide efforts were dedicated to select and harmonize available neuropsychological instruments. In Italy, the Italian Network of Neuroscience and Neuro-Rehabilitation has promoted the adaptation of the Uniform Data Set Neuropsychological Test Battery (I-UDSNB), collecting normative data from 433 healthy controls (HC). Here, we aimed to explore the ability of I-UDSNB to differentiate between a) MCI and HC, b) AD and HC, c) MCI and AD. Methods One hundred thirty-seven patients (65 MCI, 72 AD) diagnosed after clinical-neuropsychological assessment, and 137 HC were included. We compared the I-UDSNB scores between a) MCI and HC, b) AD and HC, c) MCI and AD, with t-tests. To identify the test(s) most capable of differentiating between groups, significant scores were entered in binary logistic and in stepwise regressions, and then in Receiver Operating Characteristic curve analyses. Results Two episodic memory tests (Craft Story and Five Words test) differentiated MCI from HC subjects; Five Words test, Semantic Fluency (vegetables), and TMT-part B differentiated AD from, respectively, HC and MCI. Conclusions Our findings indicate that the I-UDSNB is a suitable tool for the harmonized and concise assessment of patients with cognitive decline, showing high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of MCI and AD.

The introduction of connected automated vehicles (CAVs) on freeways raises significant challenges, particularly in interactions with human-driven vehicles, impacting traffic flow and safety. This study employs traffic microsimulation and surrogate safety assessment measures software to delve into CAV–human driver interactions, estimating potential conflicts. While previous research acknowledges that human drivers adjust their behavior when sharing the road with CAVs, the underlying reasons and the extent of associated risks are not fully understood yet. The study focuses on how CAV presence can diminish conflicts, employing surrogate safety measures and real-world mixed traffic data, and assesses the safety and performance of freeway interchange configurations in Italy and the US across diverse urban contexts. This research proposes tools for optimizing urban layouts to minimize conflicts in mixed traffic environments. Results reveal that adding auxiliary lanes enhances safety, particularly for CAVs and rear-end collisions. Along interchange ramps, an exclusive CAV stream performs similarly to human-driven ones in terms of longitudinal conflicts, but mixed traffic flows, consisting of both CAVs and human-driven vehicles, may result in more conflicts. Notably, when CAVs follow human-driven vehicles in near-identical conditions, more conflicts arise, emphasizing the complexity of CAV integration and the need for careful safety measures and roadway design considerations.

Abstract Large language models (LLMs) can potentially transform healthcare, particularly in providing the right information to the right provider at the right time in the hospital workflow. This study investigates the integration of LLMs into healthcare, specifically focusing on improving clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) through accurate interpretation of medical guidelines for chronic Hepatitis C Virus infection management. Utilizing OpenAI’s GPT-4 Turbo model, we developed a customized LLM framework that incorporates retrieval augmented generation (RAG) and prompt engineering. Our framework involved guideline conversion into the best-structured format that can be efficiently processed by LLMs to provide the most accurate output. An ablation study was conducted to evaluate the impact of different formatting and learning strategies on the LLM’s answer generation accuracy. The baseline GPT-4 Turbo model’s performance was compared against five experimental setups with increasing levels of complexity: inclusion of in-context guidelines, guideline reformatting, and implementation of few-shot learning. Our primary outcome was the qualitative assessment of accuracy based on expert review, while secondary outcomes included the quantitative measurement of similarity of LLM-generated responses to expert-provided answers using text-similarity scores. Abstract Background Carnitine palmitoyltransferase II (CPT II) deficiency is a rare inborn error of mitochondrial fatty acid metabolism with autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance. Its phenotype is highly variable (neonatal, infantile, and adult onset) on the base of mutations of the CPT II gene. In affected subjects, long-chain acylcarnitines cannot be subdivided into carnitine and acyl-CoA, leading to their toxic accumulation in different organs. Neonatal form is the most severe, and all the reported patients died within a few days to 6 months after birth. Hereby, we report on a male late-preterm newborn who presented refractory cardiac arrhythmias and acute multiorgan (hepatic, renal, muscular) injury, leading to cerebral hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, cardiovascular failure and early (day 5 of life) to death. Subsequently, extended metabolic screening and target next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis allowed the CPT II deficiency diagnosis. Case presentation The male proband was born at 36+ 4 weeks of gestation by spontaneous vaginal delivery. Parents were healthy and nonconsanguineous, although both coming from Nigeria. Family history was unremarkable. Apgar score was 9/9. At birth, anthropometric measures were as follows: weight 2850 g (47th centile, -0.07 standard deviations, SD), length 50 cm (81st centile, + 0.89 SD) and occipitofrontal circumference (OFC) 35 cm (87th centile, + 1.14 SD). On day 2 of life our newborn showed bradycardia (heart rate around 80 bpm) and hypotonia, and was then transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). There, he subsequently manifested many episodes of ventricular tachycardia, which were treated with pharmacological (magnesium sulfate) and electrical cardioversion. Due to the critical conditions of the baby (hepatic, renal and cardiac dysfunctions) and to guarantee optimal management of the arrythmias, he was transferred to the Pediatric Cardiology Reference Center of our region (Sicily, Italy), where he died 2 days later. Thereafter, the carnitines profile evidenced by the extended metabolic screening resulted compatible with a fatty acid oxidation defect (increased levels of acylcarnitines C16 and C18, and low of C2); afterwards, the targeted next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis revealed the known c.680 C > T p. (Pro227Leu) homozygous missense mutation of the CPTII gene, for diagnosis of CPT II deficiency. Genetic investigations have been, then, extended to the baby’s parents, who were identified as heterozygous carriers of the same variant. When we meet again the parents for genetic counseling, the mother was within the first trimester of her second pregnancy. Therefore, we offered to the couple and performed the prenatal target NGS analysis on chorionic villi sample, which did not detect any alterations, excluding thus the CPT II deficiency in their second child. Conclusions CPTII deficiency may be suspected in newborns showing cardiac arrhythmias, associated or not with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, polycystic kidneys, brain malformations, hepatomegaly. Its diagnosis should be even more suspected and investigated in cases of increased plasmatic levels of creatine phosphokinase and acylcarnitines in addition to kidney, heart and liver dysfunctions, as occurred in the present patient. Accurate family history, extended metabolic screening, and multidisciplinary approach are necessary for diagnosis and adequate management of affected subjects. Next generation sequencing (NGS) techniques allow the identification of the CPTII gene mutation, essential to confirm the diagnosis before or after birth, as well as to calculate the recurrence risk for family members. Our report broads the knowledge of the genetic and molecular bases of such rare disease, improving its clinical characterization, and provides useful indications for the treatment of patients.

Abstract Background The aim of this study is to compare two groups of celiac patients: the first one, in which diagnosis was based on a “biopsy sparing” approach according to the 2012 ESPGHAN criteria, and the second one, based on the biopsy approach like the one of the 1991 Revised Criteria, in order to find relevant difference for sex, M/F ratio, age at diagnosis, clinical features at the onset, presence and prevalence of concomitant autoimmune disorders. Methods Our study involves 61 patients having the Celiac Disease (CD) onset from February 2013 to February 2020. The 32 patients who received diagnosis according “biopsy sparing” criteria were enrolled in group (1) The 29 patients who received diagnosis by duodenal biopsy were enrolled in group (2) Prevalence of comorbidities was analysed through chi-square test. Results In group 1 the prevalence of comorbidities such as Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM) and thyroiditis was of 53%, while in group 2 it was only of 24%. Analysing the IDDM prevalence between the two groups we found a relevant difference. At the same time, the prevalence of thyroiditis was also significantly different. In group 1, male patients, in particular, would seem to have a higher incidence of CD related autoimmune disorders. Conclusions An increased prevalence of IDDM, thyroiditis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in the first group would show that the “biopsy sparing” approach could expose patients to a greater length of disease activity that might be responsible for the onset of such comorbidities. Further studies should be carried out on more numerous samples of patients in order to confirm or not these data.

By including oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) leaves (OL) during the extraction process, the nutraceutical benefits of argan oil (AO) can be significantly increased. Thanks to the employed technique (enrichment through extraction), without resorting to organic solvents. The current work aimed at developing of a green enrichment of argan oil with 2 and 5 % of OL. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of adding OL and its impact on AO oxidative stability under accelerated oxidation for four months. AO physicochemical characterization consisted in measuring quality indices, total phenolic contents, antioxidant activity, pigments, and sensory analysis throughout the storage period. In general, AO samples containing OL exhibited increased phenolic, chlorophylls, and carotenoid contents and lower peroxide and p-anisidine values. AO shelf-life was extended thanks to OL, which slowed down the process of lipid complete oxidation. From a sensory standpoint, a rancid taste was found in the unenriched AO, while the taste and color of oregano were more intense in the AOs supplemented with OL at 5 %. This innovative approach boost AO value in various industries and exemplifies the endless possibilities that emerge when we explore the synergy between different natural elements.

Insufficient disinfection of fresh-cut spinach poses significant health risks, along with potential issues like odor, color changes, and softening during short-term storage. To address these challenges, boric acid solutions were explored as an alternative to chlorine washes, which are known to produce toxic compounds. Among various concentrations, 1 % boric acid exhibited the most effective microbial inactivation, leading to substantial reductions in total mesophilic aerobic bacteria, total yeast and mold, and Enterobacteriaceae counts, with reductions of 1.64, 1.38, and 1.77 logs, respectively. Additionally, washing spinach leaves with this solution for 1 min maintained quality parameters, with enhanced antioxidant activity (55.26 mg kg−1 Trolox equivalent), increased total phenolic content (1214.06 mg kg−1 gallic acid equivalent), retention of chlorophyll a (839.16 mg kg−1), chlorophyll b (539.61 mg kg−1) and ascorbic acid content (264.72 mg kg−1). Mechanical properties such as puncture strength (1.81 N) and puncture distance (52.78 mm) also showed favorable outcomes, alongside optimal moisture content at 89.81 %. Notably, residual boric acid content was lowest in spinach leaves (1252.49 mg kg−1) and highest in the wash water (53.88 mg kg−1) after treatment. Scanning electron microscopy images demonstrated maintained tissue integrity, while Hunter Lab readings indicated minimal color changes post-washing. Additionally, sensory evaluations and various physicochemical analyses further supported the efficacy of boric acid washing. Consequently, washing spinach leaves with a 1 % boric acid solution for 1 min yielded favorable results across multiple quality parameters. These findings suggest the potential of boric acid as a safe and effective alternative disinfectant in the fresh-cut produce industry, highlighting its practical implications for food safety and quality. Future research should focus on exploring long-term effects and optimizing washing protocols for broader applications.

High concentrations of H2O2, indicative of increased oxidative stress in the lung, are observed in the exhaled breath of individuals affected by different respiratory diseases. Therefore, measuring H2O2 in exhaled breath represents a promising and non-invasive approach for monitoring the onset and progression of these diseases. Herein, we have developed an innovative, inexpensive, and easy-to-use device for the measurement of H2O2 in exhaled breath. The device is based on a silver layer covered with an electrodeposited thin film of chitosan, that ensures the wettability of the sensor in a humid atmosphere. The s-ensor was calibrated in the aerosol phase using both phosphate buffer solution and cell culture medium. In the buffer, a sensitivity of 0.110 ± 0.0042 μA μM−1 cm−2 (RSD: 4%) and a limit of detection of 30 μM were calculated, while in the cell culture medium, a sensitivity of 0.098 ± 0.0022 μA μM−1 cm−2 (RSD 2%) and a limit of detection of 40 μM were obtained. High selectivity to different interfering species was also verified. The sensor was further tested versus an aerosol phase obtained by nebulizing the culture medium derived from human bronchial epithelial cells that had been exposed to pro-oxidant and antioxidant treatments. The results were comparable with those obtained using the conventional cytofluorimetric method. Finally, sensor was tested in real exhaled breath samples and even after undergoing physical deformations. Data herein presented support that in future applications this device can be integrated into face masks allowing for easy breath monitoring.

The influence of the addition of Curcuma longa (turmeric) powder to Ottobratica variety extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) by using malaxation or infusion processes to obtain flavoured virgin olive oil (FVOO) was determined. FVOO was monitored during one year of storage at room temperature in the dark. FVOO obtained malaxation process (CM) showed the lowest free acidity value, irrespective of the time of storage considered. C* values of 7.23 vs 6.38 and 6.79 were recorded for the FVOO obtained infusion process (CI) and CM FVOO, respectively. Moreover, CM exhibited the highest radical scavenging activity with IC50 values of 9.48 and 3.49 μg mL−1 at T0 in DPPH and ABTS tests, respectively. However, the addition of turmeric did not improve the bioactivity of the FVOO against key enzymes involved in metabolic syndrome. Collectively our data have demonstrated, once again, how the enrichment of EVOO with an aromatic and functional matrix such as turmeric does not always lead to an improvement in its intrinsic functional characteristics despite the fact that it may be appreciated by the consumer for its sensorial characteristics.

This study aims to examine the bioactivity of Calabrian extra virgin olive oil enriched with bergamot fruits (Citrus bergamia Risso & Poiteau) harvested in Reggio Calabria province (Italy). To extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), cv Ottobratica 10 and 20 % of fresh fruit was added during crushing of the olives and 2 % by infusion of freeze-dried bergamot (CFVOOB10, CFVOOB20 and IFVOOB samples, respectively) was added. EVOO, bergamot extract and flavoured samples (FVOOs), were analysed throughout a one-year period. Total phenol content (TPC) as well as total chlorophyll (TChlC) and total carotenoid (TCC) contents were spectrophotometrically determined. In addition, the phenolic profile wasstudied by UHPLC. Free acidity (FA), peroxide values (PV), spectrophotometric indices, α-tocopherol, colour, and antioxidant activity were also assessed. The impact of bergamot addition on lipase, α‐amylase, and α‐glucosidase was estimated. Expert panellists evaluated the influence on the sensorial attributes, and CFVOOB10 was found to be the most pleasant. CFVOOB10 also showed the lowest PV and the highest FA after the storage. CFVOOB20 showed good protection against lipid peroxidation. Generally, all the FVOOs maintained a better inhibitory activity against the key enzymes related to obesity, compared to the EVOO. Data analyses confirmed that these FVOOs should be considered to be functional with a good sensory profile.

Background: Oxidative stress-related diseases in newborns arise from pro-oxidant/antioxidant imbalance in both term and preterm neonates. Pro-oxidant/antioxidant imbalance has shown to be present in different pathological conditions such as hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Methods and Results: We performed a narrative review according to the most recent available literature (2012–2024), using Scopus and PubMed as electronic databases. Many observational and experimental studies in vitro and in vivo have evaluated the effectiveness of antioxidant therapies such as melatonin, erythropoietin (EPO), allopurinol, N-acetylcisteine (NAS), and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitors in these diseases. Perinatal asphyxia is one of the most important causes of mortality and morbidity in term and near-term newborns. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is the gold standard treatment for neonates with moderate-severe perinatal asphyxia, resulting in a reduction in the mortality and neurodevelopmental disability rates. Conclusions: According to the most recent literature and clinical trials, melatonin, allopurinol, NAS, NOS inhibitors, magnesium sulfate, and stem cells stand out as promising as both adjuvants and future probable alternatives to TH in the treatment of HIE.

Despite the high global production of beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), its peel is often discarded. Transforming beetroot into flour can reduce waste, improve food security, and decrease environmental pollution. However, large-scale feasibility depends on understanding drying kinetics and optimal storage conditions. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different temperatures in the convective drying of whole beetroot and evaluate the influence of laminated flexible and plastic packaging on flour stability over two months. Drying kinetics were analyzed using five models, with the Page and Logarithm models showing the best fit (R2 > 0.99). Def values (1.27 × 10−9 to 2.04 × 10−9 m2 s−1) increased with rising temperatures while drying time was reduced (from 820 to 400 min), indicating efficient diffusion. The activation energy was 29.34 KJ mol−1, comparable to other plant matrices. Drying reduced moisture and increased ash concentration in the flour. The flour showed a good water adsorption capacity and low cohesiveness, making it marketable. Laminated packaging was more effective in controlling physicochemical parameters, reducing hygroscopicity, and maintaining quality over 60 days. In summary, the Page model can predict beetroot drying kinetics effectively, and laminated packaging can control flour stability.
