Biological tissue integrity is actively maintained by cells. It is essential to comprehend how cells accomplish this in order to stage tissue diseases. However, addressing the complexity of a cell's system of interrelated mechanisms poses a challenge. This necessitates a well-structured identification framework and an effective integration of measurements. Here we introduce the use of state-of-the-art frequency-domain system identification techniques combined with an indentation measurement platform to analyze the underlying mechanisms from the perspective of control system theory. The ultimate goal is to explore how mechanical and biological factors are related in induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-derived vascular smooth muscle cells. We study on the frequency-domain analysis for the investigation and characterization of cellular dynamics of smooth muscle cells from the measured data. The measurement model in this study exploits the availability of human tissue and samples, enabling fundamental investigations of vascular tissue disease. This approach using human cell lines holds significant potential to decrease the necessity for animal-based safety and efficacy studies. A digraph is $s$-arc-transitive if its automorphism group is transitive on directed paths with $s$ edges, that is, on $s$-arcs. Although infinite families of finite $s$-arc transitive digraphs of arbitrary valency were constructed by the third author in 1989, existence of a vertex-primitive $2$-arc-transitive digraph was not known until an infinite family was constructed by the second author with Li and Xia in 2017. This led to a conjecture by the second author and Xia in 2018 that, for a finite vertex-primitive $s$-arc-transitive digraph, $s$ is at most $2$, together with their proof that it is sufficient to prove the conjecture for digraphs with an almost simple group of automorphisms. This paper confirms the conjecture for finite symplectic groups.

Classical machine learning has proven remarkably useful in post-processing quantum data, yet typical learning algorithms often require prior training to be effective. In this work, we employ a tensorial kernel support vector machine (TK-SVM) to analyze experimental data produced by trapped-ion quantum computers. This unsupervised method benefits from directly interpretable training parameters, allowing it to identify the non-trivial string-order characterizing symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. We apply our technique to two examples: a spin-1/2 model and a spin-1 model, featuring the cluster state and the AKLT state as paradigmatic instances of SPT order, respectively. Using matrix product states, we generate a family of quantum circuits that host a trivial phase and an SPT phase, with a sharp phase transition between them. For the spin-1 case, we implement these circuits on two distinct trapped-ion machines based on qubits and qutrits. Our results demonstrate that the TK-SVM method successfully distinguishes the two phases across all noisy experimental datasets, highlighting its robustness and effectiveness in quantum data interpretation., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

This paper introduces a collaborative, human-centered taxonomy of AI, algorithmic and automation harms. We argue that existing taxonomies, while valuable, can be narrow, unclear, typically cater to practitioners and government, and often overlook the needs of the wider public. Drawing on existing taxonomies and a large repository of documented incidents, we propose a taxonomy that is clear and understandable to a broad set of audiences, as well as being flexible, extensible, and interoperable. Through iterative refinement with topic experts and crowdsourced annotation testing, we propose a taxonomy that can serve as a powerful tool for civil society organisations, educators, policymakers, product teams and the general public. By fostering a greater understanding of the real-world harms of AI and related technologies, we aim to increase understanding, empower NGOs and individuals to identify and report violations, inform policy discussions, and encourage responsible technology development and deployment.

The classic Johnson Kendall Roberts (JKR) theory describes the short-ranged adhesive contact of elastic bodies, but is only valid for axisymmetric contact. A theory for non-axisymmetric contact, which relies on approximating the contact region as an ellipse, was proposed by Johnson and Greenwood (JG). The theory includes the effects of adhesion via Griffith's criterion applied only at the semi-major and semi-minor axes of the contact ellipse. Although JG's work is in good agreement with numerical and experimental results for quasi-circular contacts, the agreement worsens as the eccentricity of the contact region increases. In this paper, we show that including the effects of adhesion by instead minimizing the sum of elastic and surface energy yields results that are in excellent agreement with previous numerical simulations over the full range of contact eccentricities.

In a pouch cell battery, the intercalation of lithium ions into the active particles means the electrodes want to expand. However, since the electrodes are attached to stiff current collectors, this expansion is constrained, leading to a macro-scale deformation and a residually stressed state. This stress state affects the electrochemistry and can also lead to mechanical degradation, causing a reduction in performance. We model the mechanical state of stress in the battery assuming a known compositional expansion of the electrodes, and use asymptotic techniques to generate reduced order models by exploiting the thin aspect ratio, as well as the large stiffness of the current collectors. We obtain analytic expressions for the stress in the bulk of the electrodes and at the interface between electrodes and current collectors, and a reduced-order equation whose solution describes the tension in the current collectors. We compare our results with full 3D finite element simulations with excellent agreement, and use our results with the battery simulation package PyBaMM to predict a realistic stress state in a discharging battery.

Effective execution of long-horizon tasks with dexterous robotic hands remains a significant challenge in real-world problems. While learning from human demonstrations have shown encouraging results, they require extensive data collection for training. Hence, decomposing long-horizon tasks into reusable primitive skills is a more efficient approach. To achieve so, we developed DexSkills, a novel supervised learning framework that addresses long-horizon dexterous manipulation tasks using primitive skills. DexSkills is trained to recognize and replicate a select set of skills using human demonstration data, which can then segment a demonstrated long-horizon dexterous manipulation task into a sequence of primitive skills to achieve one-shot execution by the robot directly. Significantly, DexSkills operates solely on proprioceptive and tactile data, i.e., haptic data. Our real-world robotic experiments show that DexSkills can accurately segment skills, thereby enabling autonomous robot execution of a diverse range of tasks.

For finite classical groups acting naturally on the set of points of their ambient polar spaces, the symmetry properties of \emph{synchronising} and \emph{separating} are equivalent to natural and well-studied problems on the existence of certain configurations in finite geometry. The more general class of \emph{spreading} permutation groups is harder to describe, and it is the purpose of this paper to explore this property for finite classical groups. In particular, we show that for most finite classical groups, their natural action on the points of its polar space is non-spreading. We develop and use a result on tactical decompositions (an \emph{AB-Lemma}) that provides a useful technique for finding witnesses for non-spreading permutation groups. We also consider some of the other primitive actions of the classical groups.

The behavior of a dynamical system can exhibit abrupt changes when it crosses a tipping point. To prevent catastrophic events, it is useful to analyze indicators of the incoming bifurcation, as the divergence of the relaxation time of the system when approaching the critical point. However, this phenomenon, called critical slowing down (CSD), is hardly measurable in real physical systems. We demonstrate the existence of a multiplicity of co-existing frequency combs in a harmonically mode-locked laser that we link to the splay phases of the Kuramoto model with short range interactions. These splay states are multistable and the laser may wander between them under the influence of stochastic forces. Consequently, the many pulses circulating in the cavity are not necessarily coherent with each other. We show that this partially disordered state for the phase of the optical field features regular train of pulses in the field intensity, a state that we term an incoherent crystal of optical pulses. We provide evidence that the notion of coherence should be interpreted by comparing the duration of the measurement time with the Kramers' escape time of each splay state. The Rydberg blockade mechanism is an important ingredient in quantum simulators based on neutral atom arrays. It enables the emergence of a rich variety of quantum phases of matter, such as topological spin liquids. The typically isotropic nature of the blockade effect, however, restricts the range of natively accessible models and quantum states. In this work, we propose a method to systematically overcome this limitation, by developing gadgets, i.e., specific arrangements of atoms, that transform the underlying Rydberg blockade into more general constraints. We apply this technique to realize dimer models on square and triangular geometries. In these setups, we study the role of the quantum fluctuations induced by a coherent drive of the atoms and find signatures of $U(1)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquid states in the respective ground states. Finally, we show that these states can be dynamically prepared with high fidelity, paving the way for the quantum simulation of a broader class of constrained models and topological matter in experiments with Rydberg atom arrays., Comment: 6+5 pages, 3+7 figures

Inequality measures are quantitative measures that take values in the unit interval, with a zero value characterizing perfect equality. Although originally proposed to measure economic inequalities, they can be applied to several other situations, in which one is interested in the mutual variability between a set of observations, rather than in their deviations from the mean. While unidimensional measures of inequality, such as the Gini index, are widely known and employed, multidimensional measures, such as Lorenz Zonoids, are difficult to interpret and computationally expensive and, for these reasons, are not much well known. We show that nearly degenerate Vertical External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers emit tilted beams of time localized structures, i.e. mode-locked light pulses which can be individually addressed. These beams feature a Gaussian profile and they are emitted in pairs with opposite transverse k-vector. Because they are phase locked, their interference leads to a non homotetic pattern in the near-field emission of the laser. When a single pair is emitted this is a stripe pattern. Our analysis discloses the role of spherical aberrations of the cavity in stabilizing this spatio-temporal mode-locked regime and in selecting the value of the transverse wavevector.

Quantum scars are special eigenstates of many-body systems that evade thermalization. They were first discovered in the PXP model, a well-known effective description of Rydberg atom arrays. Despite significant theoretical efforts, the fundamental origin of PXP scars remains elusive. By investigating the discretized dynamics of the PXP model as a function of the Trotter step $\tau$, we uncover a remarkable correspondence between the zero- and two-particle eigenstates of the integrable Floquet-PXP cellular automaton at $\tau=\pi/2$ and the PXP many-body scars of the time-continuous limit. Specifically, we demonstrate that PXP scars are adiabatically connected to the eigenstates of the $\tau=\pi/2$ Floquet operator. A snap-through bifurcation occurs when a bistable structure loses one of its stable states and moves rapidly to the remaining state. For example, a buckled arch with symmetrically clamped ends can snap between an inverted and a natural state as the ends are released. A standard linear stability analysis suggests that the arch becomes unstable to asymmetric perturbations. Surprisingly, our experiments show that this is not always the case: symmetric transitions are also observed. Using experiments, numerics, and a toy model, we show that the symmetry of the transition depends on the rate at which the ends are released with sufficiently fast loading leading to symmetric snap-through. Our toy model reveals that this behavior is caused by a region of the system's state space in which any initial asymmetry is amplified. The system may not enter this region when loaded fast (hence remaining symmetric) but will traverse it for some interval of time when loaded slowly, causing a transient amplification of asymmetry. In this paper we extend the construction of Giudici, Morgan and Zhou [arXiv:2110.07896] to give the first known examples of nonregular, $2$-closed permutation groups of rank greater than $4$ that are not the automorphism group of any digraph. We also show that this construction only gives examples for four particular primes.

We introduce a variational manifold of simple tensor network states for the study of a family of constrained models that describe spin-1/2 systems as realized by Rydberg atom arrays. Our manifold permits analytical calculation via perturbative expansion of one- and two-point functions in arbitrary spatial dimensions and allows for efficient computation of the matrix elements required for variational energy minimization and variational time evolution in up to three dimensions. We apply this framework to the PXP model on the hypercubic lattice in 1D, 2D, and 3D, and show that, in each case, it exhibits quantum phase transitions breaking the sub-lattice symmetry in equilibrium, and hosts quantum many body scars out of equilibrium. We demonstrate that our variational ansatz qualitatively captures all these phenomena and predicts key quantities with an accuracy that increases with the dimensionality of the lattice, and conclude that our method can be interpreted as a generalization of mean-field theory to constrained spin models., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures

The synchronisation hierarchy of finite permutation groups consists of classes of groups lying between 2-transitive groups and primitive groups. This includes the class of spreading groups, which are defined in terms of sets and multisets of permuted points, and which are known to be primitive of almost simple, affine or diagonal type. In this paper, we prove that in fact no spreading group of diagonal type exists. As part of our proof, we show that all non-abelian finite simple groups, other than six sporadic groups, have a transitive action in which a proper normal subgroup of a point stabiliser is supplemented by all corresponding two-point stabilisers., Comment: 10 pages. The NA48/2 experiment at CERN reports the first observation of the $K^{\pm} \rightarrow \pi^{0} \pi^{0} \mu^{\pm} \nu$ decay based on a sample of 2437 candidates with 15% background contamination collected in 2003--2004. The decay branching ratio in the kinematic region of the squared dilepton mass above $0.03$~GeV$^2/c^4$ is measured to be $(0.65 \pm 0.03) \times 10^{-6}$. The extrapolation to the full kinematic space, using a specific model, is found to be $(3.45 \pm 0.16) \times 10^{-6}$, in agreement with chiral perturbation theory predictions., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Neglecting small fragments in space debris evolutionary models can lead to a significant underestimation of the collision risk for operational satellites. However, when scaling down to the millimeter range, the debris population grows to over one million objects, making deterministic approaches too computationally expensive. On the contrary, probabilistic models provide a more efficient alternative, which however typically work under some simplifying assumptions on the dynamics, limiting their field of applicability. This work proposes an extension of the density-based collision risk models to any orbital dynamics and impact geometry. The impact rate with a target satellite is derived from a multi-dimensional phase space density function in Keplerian elements, which discretely varies over both phase space and time. The assumption of a bin-wise constant cloud density allows for the analytical transformation of the six-dimensional distribution in orbital elements into the three-dimensional spatial density function, guaranteeing an efficient and accurate evaluation of the fragments flux. The proposed method is applied to the assessment of the collision risk posed by real fragmentation clouds in different orbital regions on a high-risk target object. The effect on the impact rate of the additional model features, compared to previous probabilistic formulations, is discussed.

Single-section quantum dash semiconductor lasers have attracted much attention as an integrated and simple platform for the generation of THz-wide and flat optical frequency combs in the telecom C-band. In this work, we present an experimental method allowing to increase the spectral width of the laser comb by the injection of a broadband optical noise from an external semiconductor optical amplifier that is spectrally overlapped with the quantum dash laser comb. The noise injection induces an amplification of the side modes of the laser comb which acquire a fixed phase relationship with the central modes of the comb. Reconciliation enforces coherence between hierarchical forecasts, in order to satisfy a set of linear constraints. While most works focus on the reconciliation of the point forecasts, we consider probabilistic reconciliation and we analyze the properties of the distributions reconciled via conditioning. We provide a formal analysis of the variance of the reconciled distribution, treating separately the case of Gaussian forecasts and count forecasts. We also study the reconciled upper mean in the case of 1-level hierarchies; also in this case we analyze separately the case of Gaussian forecasts and count forecasts. We then show experiments on the reconciliation of intermittent time series related to the count of extreme market events. We investigate the nature of quantum phases arising in chiral interacting Hamiltonians recently realized in Rydberg atom arrays. We classify all possible fermionic chiral spin liquids with $\mathrm{U}(1)$ global symmetry using parton construction on the honeycomb lattice. The resulting classification includes six distinct classes of gapped quantum spin liquids: the corresponding variational wave functions obtained from two of these classes accurately describe the Rydberg many-body ground state at $1/2$ and $1/4$ particle density. Complementing this analysis with tensor network simulations, we conclude that both particle filling sectors host a spin liquid with the same topological order of a $\nu=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall effect. At density $1/2$, our results clarify the phase diagram of the model, while at density $1/4$, they provide an explicit construction of the ground state wave function with almost unit overlap with the microscopic one. Disorder-free localization (DFL) is an ergodicity breaking mechanism that has been shown to occur in lattice gauge theories in the quench dynamics of initial states spanning an extensive number of gauge superselection sectors. Whether DFL is intrinsically a quantum interference effect or can arise classically has hitherto remained an open question whose resolution is pertinent to further understanding the far-from-equilibrium dynamics of gauge theories. In this work, we utilize cellular automaton circuits to model the quench dynamics of large-scale quantum link model (QLM) formulations of $(1+1)$D quantum electrodynamics, showing excellent agreement with the exact quantum case for small system sizes. Our results demonstrate that DFL persists in the thermodynamic limit as a purely classical effect arising from the finite-size regularization of the gauge-field operator in the QLM formulation, and that quantum interference, though not a necessary condition, may be employed to enhance DFL., Comment: $8+1$ pages, $4+1$ figures
