The article presents a study of intra- and intergenerational income mobility of two generations of residents of Geneva, Switzerland. The first generation (Cohort I) consists of about 1000 families living in Geneva from 1950 to 1980. Their income is measured at five year intervals throughout these 30 years of rapid development. The second generation consists of sons and daughters of Cohort I families. Their income is measured in 1980 when they were 37-38 years old. Upward income mobility of the members of Cohort I is considerable but since the cost of living also increased from 1950 to 1980, a sizable proportion of this cohort still fell below the poverty line in old age. The Geneva survey covers years 1950-1980, a period of economic and social progress. Under such conditions income mobility has been generally upward, but distances covered intragenerationally have been highly diverse. Therefore, the rank occupied by households in the upgrading income pyramid has tended to be unstable.

The article discusses research on the opportunities available to young people to advance in the areas of education and careers. The research focuses on the relationship between family financial resources and opportunities afforded to young people. The researchers measure a number of financial indicators of wealth, including property, money and insurance. The study looks at families and young men and women from the area in and around Geneva, Switzerland.

The article presents a case study of the distribution of information on the "Economic Surveys of Europe" published by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE). It notes that the annual surveys of the ECE are made by a research division with a special statistical section whose particular duty is to collect, analyze and complete the statistical data which form the basic documentation of each survey. It discusses the methodology of the surveys.

This article intends to devote a somewhat detailed examination to the social mobility chances of youngsters of working class origin. Usually the working classes are taken as an undifferentiated block in social mobility studies. Researchers were interested in determining some of the internal divisions which delineate sub-strata within this very large group, from the point of view of social mobility chances. Two kinds of characteristics are considered, family background and standard of living. Schooling is also taken into account. This third factor is, of course, of key importance for the occupational career of youngsters. But it is itself largely influenced by family characteristics. Researchers aim to disentangle some aspects of these intricate relations. Observations which are at the basis of the present study are mainly of two kinds, analysis of the situation at 20 years of age of all males belonging to one specific age group. Researchers have detailed information about the school and apprenticeship, career of all members of this age group from the age of 12. In addition the material contains data on a series of basic social characteristics of these same individuals. This study also includes a complementary survey. Special comparative interview study of two groups, for collecting complementary information on different points, in particular on income.
