In adults, foreign body ingestion is more common in the elderly, individuals with mental illness or who have an intellectual disability, alcohol poisoning, prison inmates, and drug traffickers.Case Presentation: We present a 22 year old male patient who presented with abdominal distension and vomiting of ingested matter of two to three episodes per day of one month duration. He is a known schizophrenic patient for the past three years and has been on follow up at a nearby hospital. He swallowed metallic nails in an attempt to kill himself. On abdominal examination there was distension, and epigastric tenderness. His plain abdominal x-ray showed multiple radiopaque foreign body in the stomach. Similarly, abdominal ultrasound showed thickened gastric wall and multiple linear foreign bodies in the stomach. Then, with the impression of gastric outlet obstruction secondary to foreign body in the stomach, laparotomy plus gastrotomy plus foreign body removal and repair were done under general anesthesia. Dilated stomach, palpable mass on distal stomach and first part of duodenum, and adhesion between stomach, abdominal wall and liver was found intra operatively.Conclusion: Passage of curved metal through the throat is a rare case. Mentally ill individuals need close follow up and physiological consultation.Keywords: foreign body ingestion, metal, Schizophrenia

In Ethiopia, despite a number of primary studies have been conducted to estimate the case fatality rate (CFR) of COVID-19, no review study has attempted to summarize the findings to better understand the nature of pandemics and the virulence of the disease.Objective: To summarize the CFR of COVID-19 and factors contributing to mortality in Ethiopia.Methods: PRISMA guideline was followed. PubMed, Science Direct, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Hinari, and Google Scholar were systematically searched using pre-specified keywords. Observational studies ie, cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control studies were included. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale adapted for observational studies was used to assess the quality of included studies. CFR was defined as the proportion of COVID-19 cases with the outcome of death within a given period. Factors contributing to COVID-19 mortality at p-value < 0.05 were described narratively from the eligible articles.Results: A total of 13 observational studies were included in this study. Consequently, this review confirmed the CFR of COVID-19 in Ethiopia ranges between 1– 20%. Additionally, comorbid conditions, older age group, male sex, substance use, clinical manifestations (abnormal oxygen saturation level, atypical lymphocyte count, fever, and shortness of breath), disease severity, and history of surgery/trauma increased the likelihood of death from COVID-19 death.Conclusion: This study shows that the range of CFR of COVID-19 in Ethiopia is almost equivalent to other countries, despite the country’s low testing capacity and case detection rate in reference to its total population. Comorbid diseases, older age group, male sex, cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, clinical manifestations and disease severity, and history of surgery/trauma were factors contributing to COVID-19 mortality in Ethiopia. Therefore, given the alarming global situation and rapidly evolving large-scale pandemics, urgent interdisciplinary interventions should be implemented in those vulnerable groups to lessen the risk of mortality. Furthermore, the CFR of COVID-19 should be estimated from all treatment and rehabilitation centers in the country, as underestimation could be linked to a lack of preparedness and mitigation. A large set of prospective studies are also compulsory to better understand the CFR of COVID-19 in Ethiopia.Keywords: case fatality rate, COVID-19, coronavirus, mortality, Ethiopia

The PedsQLTM 3.0 DM measures the health-related quality of life (HrQoL) specific to diabetes. Even though there is no translation to Ethiopian Amharic, the instruments had translated to different languages and validated. The study is aimed to assess the validity and reliability of the Amharic version of the PedsQLTM 4.0 GCS and the PedsQLTM 3.0 DM in children and adolescents with diabetes.Methods: PedsQLTM 4.0 GCS and the PedsQLTM 3.0 DM were administered on 193 children and adolescents with diabetes and their parents. The validity was examined by the exploratory factor analysis, multitrait/multi-item scaling analysis, and multitrait-multimethod and monotrait-multimethod analysis. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient checked the reliability.Results: Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the total PedsQLTM 4.0 GCS (α child self-report= 0.96; α parent proxy report= 0.95) and for total PedsQLTM 3.0 DM (α child self-report= 0.96; α parent proxy report=0.93) were acceptable at individual patient-level analysis. The monotrait-multimethod correlations were higher than multitrait-multimethod correlations. In multitrait/multi-item scale analysis, both total PedsQLTM 4.0 GCS and PedsQLTM 3.0 DM had an excellent item convergent and discriminatory validity success rate.Conclusion: The Amharic versions of the PedsQLTM 4.0 GCS and the PedsQLTM 3.0 DM were valid and reliable instruments to measure the HrQoL of children and adolescents with diabetes.Keywords: quality of life, PedsQL™ 3.0 DM, PedsQLTM 4.0 GCS, validation, reliability

Abstract Background Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is a critical emergency with substantial morbidity and mortality. Outcomes depend on bleeding severity, patient risk factors, and comorbidities. This study evaluated clinical patterns and factors influencing disease severity and hospital stay among patients present with UGIB symptoms at two major Ethiopian hospitals. Methods A retrospective, cross-sectional review was conducted on 199 UGIB patients admitted to Yekatit 12 Hospital Medical College (Y12HMC) and Tikur Anbesa Specialized Hospital (TASH) from September 2022 to September 2023. BackgroundDiabetes mellitus is a growing global health issue, especially in low- and middle-income countries like Ethiopia. To the best of our knowledge, the impact of diabetes knowledge on glycemic control in Ethiopia has not been documented. This study assessed diabetes knowledge and its relationship with glycemic control among Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients in Debre Berhan, Ethiopia.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted involving 380 patients diagnosed with T2DM who were receiving care at two hospitals in Debre Berhan from January 1 to March 30, 2024. Patients' knowledge was assessed using the modified Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire (DKQ-18), categorizing outcomes as either good or poor. Glycemic control was evaluated using hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify predictors of poor diabetes knowledge. Correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between knowledge and glycemic control.ResultsAmong the 380 participants, 75.2% were older than 45 years, and 51.3% were male. Overall, 62.4% of participants had poor knowledge of diabetes. Additionally, 72.6% had poor glycemic control, with HbA1C levels ≥7%. The mean average diabetes knowledge score was 7.9 (SD = 3.49) out of 18, and the median HbA1C was 8%. Diabetes knowledge was significantly associated (p < 0.05) with patients' educational level, occupation, family history of diabetes, and glycemic control. The Spearman correlation coefficient between HbA1C and diabetes knowledge scores was -0.166 (p = 0.001), suggesting a weak but statistically significant inverse relationship between knowledge scores and HbA1C levels.ConclusionsThe study found that the majority of patients had a low level of diabetes knowledge. Enhancing diabetes education and identifying additional factors that influence glycemic control are crucial for achieving optimal diabetes management in Ethiopia. Public health initiatives should prioritize enhancing diabetes knowledge through targeted educational programs and resources to support effective diabetes management and achieve optimal glycemic control.

Objective Asymptomatic peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is frequently overlooked in patients with cirrhosis, who are at increased risk for gastrointestinal complications that can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. We aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of asymptomatic PUD identified during screening endoscopy in patients with cirrhosis. Methods We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study among patients with cirrhosis at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in Ethiopia. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire from patients’ medical charts. A logistic regression model was used to identify predictors of peptic ulcer. Results This study included 296 patients, revealing that 19.6% had PUD (95% confidence interval: 13.5–26.4). Significant associations were found between peptic ulcer and Helicobacter pylori infection, moderate and heavy alcohol consumption, and Child–Pugh class C cirrhosis. Conclusion We found that patients with liver cirrhosis are more likely to have asymptomatic peptic ulcers. Asymptomatic PUD was linked to H. pylori infection, greater alcohol consumption, and Child–Pugh class C liver disease, highlighting the need for targeted prevention and management strategies to reduce morbidity in patients with cirrhosis, such as eradication therapy for H. pylori and counseling on alcohol use.

AbstractA crucial factor in designing the wind turbine blade tips for improved aerodynamic performance is the winglet geometry. The potentials of curved planform winglet profiles for performance augmentation have not been adequately investigated. This study focuses on modifying the NREL Phase VI blade tip geometry with different winglet configurations using the S809 airfoil profile. The benchmark blade and the blade with a winglet were designed and simulated using CFD. Accordingly, three distinct winglet designs were created to characterize the flow behavior at the tip and tip vortices. For methodology design and validation, the NREL Phase VI blade served as the benchmark blade. Consequently, the CFD and QBlade simulation and numerical findings are compared with data from the NREL Phase VI experiment. When comparing the simulated parameters like power and pressure coefficients with measurements, there is an adequately high degree of agreement. Therefore, compared to the benchmark blade, the aerodynamic power shows a 5.34% to 9.97% gain, while the increase in axial thrust force shows 5% to 11.84% for the wind speed between 5 m/s and 13 m/s. Moreover, all the winglets show a comparable power boost at low wind speeds, while the blade with winglet (W2) marginally shows better aerodynamic performance at higher speeds. Furthermore, axial thrust force rises as the winglet curvature length increases, thereby winglet W3 shows a substantial axial thrust force rise. The results further demonstrate that the geometry of blade tip winglets can have a considerable impact on the wind turbine blade effectiveness as a whole.

ABSTRACTA wind turbine blade’s winglet is predominantly used to reduce the induced drag generated by the blades and consequently improve the blade’s aerodynamic performance. The benchmark blade NREL Phase VI and all blades with the winglet were designed and simulated using CFD. Subsequently, the numerical model is validated against data from the NREL Phase VI experiment. In the first case, at a fixed winglet length of 0.09 m, the best results are obtained for sharp bent configurations when the winglet cant angle is 45° whereas for smooth bent configurations is at a 30° cant angle. Under the second scenario, ten winglets with different winglet heights, lengths, and cant angles and a simple linear tip extension are generated and tested numerically at wind speeds of 5, 7 and 9 m/s. Therefore, curving the tip to make a winglet shape of applicable configuration is definitely preferable to extending the tip straight.

Finger millet grain is healthy and high in protein, fat and minerals especially calcium after proper processing. However, antinutrients represent a major obstacle to the usage of finger millet grains, which have restricted dietary applications. Biscuits are typically made from wheat flour, which increases wheat demand despite restricted supplies. The study aimed to explore how the length of fermentation and grain malting affected the color, nutritional content and antinutrients value of Aksum finger millet biscuits. Fermentation times were 24, 36 and 48 hours while the malting times were 24, 48 and 72 hours. The raw grain flour biscuit was used as a control sample to compare with each six samples of both factors. Abstract Background Swyer–James–MacLeod syndrome (SJMS) is a rare lung condition characterized by a unilateral lung hyperlucency and reduction in the pulmonary vasculature, with or without the presence of bronchiectasis. In the 1950s, Swyer, James, and Macleod simultaneously characterized the syndrome for the first time. It is typically diagnosed in childhood. Adult-onset cases are extremely rare, with little literature available on its clinical presentation and diagnostic challenges. Swyer–James–MacLeod syndrome can mimic other lung disorders, resulting in misdiagnosis and improper treatment. Case presentation A 49- year-old woman from Debre Berhan, Ethiopia, presented to the emergency department of Hakim Gizaw Teaching Hospital with symptoms and radiographic findings mimicking acute pulmonary embolism. On the basis of the clinical presentation and radiographic findings, the patient was first treated as a probable case of pulmonary embolism. Anticoagulant therapy and oxygen support were initiated. Nevertheless, additional testing using a chest computed tomography angiography revealed left lung hyperlucency, decreased vascularity, bronchiectasis, and a negative result for pulmonary embolism. As a result, Swyer–James–MacLeod syndrome was diagnosed. Conclusion The symptoms of Swyer–James–MacLeod syndrome can be mistaken for pulmonary embolism, which could lead to ineffective treatment and needless expenses. In individuals presenting with symptoms suggestive of pulmonary embolism, this case emphasizes the significance of considering Swyer–James–MacLeod syndrome as a differential diagnosis, especially in the absence of established risk factors for pulmonary embolism.

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a growing public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Ethiopia. There is limited data on gender differences in glycemic control and diabetes related chronic complications in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess gender-based difference in glycemic control and diabetes related chronic complications among T2DM patients in Debre Berhan public hospitals, Ethiopia. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was carried out at public hospitals in Debre Berhan. Data were gathered from 258 T2DM patients (129 men and 129 women). Using Hemoglobin A1c (HgA1c), level of glycemic control was assessed. To compare gender differences in diabetes related chronic complications and glycemic control, the chi-square test and Independent sample t-test were employed. However logistic regression was employed to identify gender-specific factors of poor glycemic control. Results: Women had poorer glycemic control, with a mean difference of 0.51 (95 % CI: 0.04–0.97) as compared with men. Alcohol consumption (AOR = 3.2; 95 % CI: 1.25–7.98), drug non-adherence (AOR = 4.1; 95 % CI: 1.01–17.54) and diabetic complications (AOR = 0.3; 95 % CI: 0.10–0.88) were significant factors for poor glycemic control in men. For women, rural residence (AOR = 0.2; 95 % CI: 0.03–0.58), duration of diabetes >5 years (AOR = 4.3; 95 % CI: 1.15–16.17), and drug non-adherence (AOR = 4.7; 95 % CI: 1.14–19.42) were significant factors for poor glycemic control. There were no significant gender differences in diabetes related chronic complications. Conclusion: This study revealed significant gender differences in glycemic control among T2DM patients. Female patients experienced worse glycemic control. There were no gender differences in the prevalence of diabetes related chronic complications. This study highlights the importance of considering both general and specific factors when assessing and improving glycemic control in T2DM. Future studies should involve large sample sizes and gender focused studies to gain a deeper understanding of the relevant factors.

ABSTRACT Background Morphometric traits discrepancies are associated with production, reproduction, adaptation and behaviours in horses. It also determines the design of harnessing implements, physical injury level and working performance of the native horses. Thus, the study was conducted to evaluate morphometric traits and body conformation indices of horse ecotypes reared across four districts of Bale Zone, Ethiopia. Methods Data of croup height, croup length, hip height, mid‐back height, wither height, hip width, thoracic depth, chest width, body length, sternum height, thorax perimeter and cannon perimeter were measured in 500 horses (294 male and 206 female). Using those traits, 17 body conformation indices were calculated to define the horses for multi‐faceted performances. Results The study revealed that croup height, hip height, wither height, hip width, croup length, body length, thorax perimeter and sternum height were significantly (p < 0.0001) different among the studied districts. The district effect was also significant at p < 0.05 for mid‐back height, thoracic depth, chest width and cannon perimeter. The sexual dimorphism effect was statistically significant for all measured traits; however, females were inferior to males except for cannon perimeter. Body conformation indices of pelvic index, body index, transversal pelvic index and weight were highly significant (p < 0.0001) among the studied districts. The sex dimorphism effect was significant (p < 0.001) for dactyl‐costal index, pelvic index, longitudinal pelvic index, transversal pelvic index, weight, tare index 1 (trot or gallop), tare index 2 (walk) and riding comfort degree, while non‐significant (p > 0.05) for the remaining indices. The studied horses were classified as mediline, elipometric, light, small and suitable riding ecotypes with a medium‐conforming body structure and good capacity for carrying loads on carts and backs for functional effectiveness. The correlations of body conformation indices ranged from very high to low, with positive and negative associations for functional capabilities. Conclusion Therefore, selection for improvement needs to rank morphometric traits and body conformation indices in correlation to developing racing and modern sport horses in the highlands of the Bale eco‐regions. Further, molecular studies will be essential to determine whether the predominated phenotypic multiplicity is genetic or environmentally progressed.

This study was conducted to evaluate morphometric traits of horse ecotypes reared in four districts of the Bale highlands, southeastern Ethiopia. Twenty-seven morphometric traits were measured from 500 horses (294 males and 206 females) of both sexes. Data were analyzed using SAS 2012. This study revealed that certain traits, such as head length, loin length, bi-ischial width, and sternum height of horses were similar. However, significant differences (p < 0.0001, p < 0.01, p < 0.05) were observed in other traits across the districts. All traits were affected by age (p < 0.05) except rump width and canon perimeter. All 27 morphometric traits were subjected to STEPDISC analysis, of which 21 had the best discriminating power. The uppermost distances of 32.2 and, 28.8 were reported between the Agarfa and Dinsho and, Agarfa and Sinana horse populations, respectively. Mean separation distance among districts ranges from -1.75 to 3.57, -2.42 to 2.43, and -1.61 to 0.92 for CAN1, CAN2 and CAN3, respectively. The quadratic discriminate function classified 95.2, 94.4, 96.0, and 96.8 % of the sampled horses into source populations of the Dinsho, Agarfa, Sinana, and Goba districts, respectively. In addition, the cross-validation summary revealed reduced consistency of membership among each districts with 5 % average success rates and 4, 8, 4, and 4 % for the Dinsho, Agarfa, Sinana, and Goba districts, respectively. Therefore, the presence of variation in morphometric traits within the Bale Highland horse ecotypes has the potential for selection and further genetic interventions.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major health concern worldwide. Diabetes patients are increasingly using herbal medicine (HM) without seeking advice from their healthcare providers. However, its impact on glycemic control is not documented in Ethiopia. Thus, this study aimed to assess herbal medicine use and its effect on glycemic control among diabetes patients at governmental hospitals in Debre Berhan town, Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 430 diabetic patients was conducted at two different hospitals in Debre Berhan town from January 1 to March 30, 2024. Data were gathered using a guided self-administered questionnaire to collect data including glycemic control assessed via hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 25. Logistic regression model was used to assess the predictors of herbal medicine usage, while an independent samples t-test was conducted to compare the mean HbA1c levels between herbal medicine users and non-users among diabetes patients. Results: Of the 430 participants, 72.6 % were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The study revealed 48.1 % (95 % CI: 43.3–53) participants used herbal medicine. Moringa stenopetala (33.5 %), Trigonella foenumgraecum (27.4 %), and Thymus schimperi (17.9 %) were the predominant herbs utilized by diabetic patients. The use of herbal medicine was associated with the patients’ diabetic knowledge (AOR: 1.59; 95 % CI: 1.01–2.49), occupation (AOR: 3.7; 95 % CI: 1.36–10.23), income (AOR: 3.58; 95 % CI: 1.22–10.55), and family history of diabetes (AOR: 1.9; 95 % CI: 1.19–3.18). Glycemic status was not controlled for 86 % of herbal users compared to 66.8 % of non-users. Participants who used herbal medicine had significantly higher mean HbA1c by a mean difference of 0.41 (95%CI: 0.04–0.78). Conclusions: Herbal medicine use was common among diabetes patients in this study. Poor knowledge about diabetes, a family history of diabetes, lower income, and a farming occupation were identified as strong predictors of HM use. Patients who used herbal medicine had significantly higher mean HbA1c levels compared to non-users. Healthcare providers should engage patients in discussions about herbal medicine use, emphasizing the potential risks to glycemic management. Future research should explore specific herbs used, their mechanisms of action, and strategies to integrate herbal medicine safely into diabetes management protocols.

In low- and middle-income countries where the majority of preventable cardiovascular disease deaths occur, less than 10% of eligible patients receive statins for primary cardiovascular disease prevention. Since 2017, the Global Hearts initiative has implemented simple World Health Organization (WHO) HEARTS hypertension and diabetes treatment protocols. In this editorial, we propose an approach of integrating statin treatment into existing HEARTS hypertension and diabetes protocols as a way of expanding statin coverage in low-and middle-income countries.

The finite element method was used in this study to explore the impact of surface roughness and thermal characteristics on slider bearings with non-Newtonian power-law fluid flow lubricant. One-dimensional transverse and longitudinal surface roughness models were considered under the stochastic assumption that roughness has a Gaussian random distribution. For improved computing efficiency, the surface’s uneven texture is transformed into a regular domain. For non-Newtonian power-law lubrication, a modified Reynolds equation was developed. The pressure distribution of the combined effect is less than that of the surface roughness and thermal effect in longitudinal surface roughness for all non-Newtonian parameters n and M⊛ values. As a result, there is an 1.6% reduction in load-carrying capacity performance and negligible friction force for nonparallel w=0.4 between the thermal effect and surface roughness. Nevertheless, for all non-Newtonian parameters n and M⊛ values, the pressure distribution of the thermal effect in the transverse roughness model is smaller than that of the combined and surface roughness effects. Consequently, there is an 8.9% reduction in load-carrying capacity performance and a negligible friction force for nonparallel w=0.4 between the surface roughness effect and the thermal effect condition, respectively. Additionally, the combined impacts at different temperatures were examined. As a result, in longitudinal models, the load-carrying capacity performance is better when the slider temperature is higher than the pad temperature, and vice versa for transverse models. Surface roughness and non-Newtonian power-law fluid characteristics generally enhance the performance of a slider bearing. Tables and graphs were employed to present the results.

The streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) finite element method was used in this study to investigate the thermal and surface roughness effects on an inclined slider bearing with an unsteady fluid film. One-dimensional transverse and longitudinal surface roughness models were considered with the supposition that roughness is stochastic and has a Gaussian random distribution. For simplicity of numerical computation, the irregularity caused by the texture of the surface is transformed into a regular domain. The bearing performance of the combined effect is lower than the thermal and surface roughness effects of the one-dimensional longitudinal surface roughness for all modified Reynolds numbers of nonparallel slider bearings; this means that for nonparallel (w=0.4) between the surface roughness effect and the combined effect condition, there is a decrease of 13% in load-carrying capacity performance and a minimal change in friction force, respectively. However, in the case of nonparallel one-dimensional transverse type slider bearings, the bearing performance of the thermal effect is lower than the combined and surface roughness effects for all modified Reynolds numbers, where between the combined effect and the thermal effect condition, there is a reduction of 19% in load-carrying capacity performance and 2% in friction force practically for all changed Reynolds values, respectively. Furthermore, the combined effects at various temperatures have been investigated. As a result, in both longitudinal and transverse models, in the case of the pad temperature being lower than the slider, the load-carrying capacity performance is higher than in other cases for nonparallel slider bearings, whereas when the slider temperature is lower than the pad temperature, the drag frictional force is the leading one in both models. In general, considering surface texture and inertial effects will increase the performance of a slider. The results obtained are displayed using figures and tables.

Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare medical condition characterized by a complete mirror-image reversal of the normal positioning of the internal organs. Aristotle initially described situs inversus in animals, while Fabricius first characterized it in humans. Although the specific cause is uncertain, there is evidence of autosomal recessive and X-linked inheritance. Before seeking treatment for an unrelated ailment, many people with SIT are unaware of their distinct anatomy, as in our case. The presented case is a 30-year-old female patient from Central Ethiopia, presented to Hakim Gizaw Teaching Hospital outpatient department of medicine with the complaint of right-sided anterior chest pain for five days. Clinically, the apical beat was heard in the right 5th intercostal space. After undergoing an electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiogram, chest X-ray, and abdominal ultrasound, she was diagnosed with situs inversus totalis. The clinical implications of SIT encompass challenges in diagnosis and procedures, potential congenital cardiac abnormalities, considerations for organ transplantation, and clinical decision-making, particularly in emergency scenarios. Key Clinical Messages. This case highlights the clinical implications of dextrocardia with situs inversus totalis, emphasizing the importance of awareness for accurate diagnosis, procedural challenges, and informed clinical decision-making. Understanding this rare condition is crucial for providing appropriate medical care and to navigate potential complications in affected individuals.

Key Clinical Message Appendiceal duplication is exceedingly rare, with a prevalence of 0.004% to 0.009% in appendectomy specimens. Appendiceal duplications can occur alone or in conjunction with cecal duplication. The persistence of the temporary embryologic second cecal appendix is hypothesized to cause appendiceal duplications. We present a case of appendiceal duplication in a 26‐year‐old Ethiopian female patient who had been experiencing abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant for 1 week. She developed anorexia, a loss of appetite, and a low‐grade fever as a result of this. She reported direct and rebound mild discomfort in the right lower quadrant on abdominal examination. She was then operated on and she had an appendiceal duplication intraoperatively. As a result, an appendectomy was performed, and the patient was discharged with improved health. To avoid unfavorable patient outcomes and medicolegal difficulties, surgeons and surgical trainees who conduct several appendectomies throughout their training should be aware of the likelihood of appendiceal duplication.

Abstract Poor storage facilities expose seeds to deterioration, resulting in low seed quality under a prolonged storage time. We compared the performance of five bag types: Two hermetic bags (Super GrainPro bag [SGB] and Purdue Improved Crop Storage bag [PICS]), with three non‐hermetic bags (woven polypropylene bag lined with polyethylene [WPP lined with PE], polypropylene bags [PP], and jute bags) for the storage of faba bean seeds for 24 months. Faba bean seed quality was assessed under ambient conditions after 0, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of storage. Parameters investigated include seed moisture content, thousand seed weight, germination percentages, vigor index I and II, speed of germination, percentage of insect‐damaged seed, and insect counts. Results indicated that there was a significant (P ≤ 0.01) interaction of bag types and duration for all tested parameters. Hermetic bags and WPP lined with PE maintained germination percentage above 90% during 12 months of storage. The vigor index remained above 1600 mg% for hermetic bags and WPP lined with PE during 12 months of storage. However, non‐hermetic bags exhibited a rapid drop in vigor index beginning from 6 months of storage. Hermetic bags and WPP lined with PE allowed minimal insect breeding and hence decreased the seed damage caused by insects. The present results demonstrated that in addition to the PICS bags and SGB, the WPP lined with PE can be used for short‐period storage for up to 12 months without incurring a significant loss of seed quality. Hence, we recommend the introduction of WPP lined with PE as faba bean seed storage technique under conditions where hermetic bags are inaccessible to resource‐poor farmers.

This survey aimed to investigate the extent of insect infestations, associated losses, and insect species abundance in farm-stored chickpea seeds across five chickpea growing districts in Ethiopia. Despite being the largest producer, consumer, and exporter of chickpea in Africa, insect pest infestations have caused significant losses to Ethiopia's chickpea industry. Results showed that Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) was the most prevalent insect species, followed by Sitophilus oryzae (L.) and Tribolium confusum (J. du Val). The insect pests infested both local and improved chickpea varieties, and traditional containers and polypropylene bags were used for storage. The percentage of insect-damaged seed ranged from 4.61% to 14.48%, while the seed weight loss ranging from 1.13% to 4.55%. The range of seed germination percentages was from 65% to 88%, with a mean rate of 71%. These losses significantly affect the market value of the crop as grain and its use as seed, affecting farmers' income and food security. Therefore, it is crucial to develop effective solutions to prevent the loss of farm-stored chickpea in Ethiopia.

Abstract Background Several factors like altitude, age, sex, pregnancy, socioeconomic status, life style and race influence hematological reference interval (RIs), which are critical to support clinical decisions and to interpret laboratory data in research. Currently there are no well-established RIs for cord blood hematological parameters of newborns in Ethiopia. This study aims to generate RIs for umbilical cord blood hematological parameters of newborns from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 1 to March 31, 2019 on healthy, term newborns (37–42 weeks) with normal birth weight born to apparently healthy pregnant mothers who had met the eligibility criteria. From 139 newborns, 2-3ml cord blood was immediately collected from the clumped cord using EDTA tube. The samples were analyzed using Sysmex KX 21 hematology analyzer. Data was entered and the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles (upper and lower reference limit) were determined using non parametric method by SPSS version 23. The non-parametric independent Mann-Whitney U test (Wilcoxon rank-sum test) was used to compare the distribution of the parameters between genders, modes of deliveries and gestational age. P value less than 0.05 was considered to declare statistical significance. Result The median values and 95 % reference interval for umbilical cord blood hematological parameters of newborns were as follows: WBC = 12.4 [6.6–19.4] x109/L, RBC = 4.51 [3.55–5.52] x1012/L, HGB = 15.8 [12.4–19.7] g/dL, HCT = 45.9[37.9–56.3]%, MCV = 102.1[83.9-111.6] fL, MCH = 35.3 [29.4–39.1] pg, MCHC = 34.3 [32.3–37.4] %, PLT = 236 [146–438] x109/L, LYM = 37.5 [16.6–63.0] %, MXD = 7.9[1.7–15.8] %, NEU = 53.7[30.3–78.4] %, RDW = 15.6[12.0–19.0]%, PDW = 11.0[9.1–15.7]% and MPV = 9.4[8.1–11.8] fL. The current study found no significant difference between genders, except RDW (P = 0.01), and gestational age group, but there was significant difference for WBC (p = 0.007), RBC (p = 0.018) and Absolute NEU (p = 0.001) by delivery type where newborns delivered through caesarean section had lower values for these three parameters compared to those with spontaneous delivery. Conclusions hematological reference intervals in cord blood were established for the first time from healthy newborns of Addis Ababa and its surrounding. The values are applicable for newborns from this area. Larger study throughout the country is warranted.

Background. The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the everyday lives of the world’s population and to this end, the development of curative vaccines was upheld as a welcome panacea. Despite the undeniable negative impact of the disease on human beings, lower than expected proportions of people have taken up the vaccines, particularly in the developing non-Western world. Ethiopia represents an interesting case example, of a nation where COVID-19 vaccine acceptance levels have not been well investigated and a need exists to assess the overall level of vaccine acceptance. Methods. A systematic multidatabase search for relevant articles was carried out across Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct, Hinari, EMBASE, Boolean operator, and PubMed. Two reviewers independently selected, reviewed, screened, and extracted data by using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. The Joanna Briggs Institute prevalence critical appraisal tools and the modified NewcastleOttawa Scale (NOS) were used to assess the quality of evidence. All studies conducted in Ethiopia, reporting vaccine acceptance rates were incorporated. The extracted data were imported into the comprehensive meta-analysis version 3.0 for further analysis. Heterogeneity was confirmed using Higgins’s method, and publication bias was checked by using Beggs and Eggers tests. A random-effects meta-analysis model with a 95% confidence interval was computed to estimate the pooled prevalence. Furthermore, subgroup analysis based on the study area and sample size was done. Results and Conclusion. After reviewing 67 sources, 18 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance in Ethiopia was 57.8% (95% CI: 47.2%–67.8%). The level of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance in Ethiopia was at a lower rate than necessary to achieve herd immunity. The highest level of vaccine acceptance rate was reported via online or telephone surveys followed by the southern region of Ethiopia. The lowest vaccine acceptance patterns were reported in Addis Ababa.

Ethno-linguistic federalism in Ethiopia has caused ethno-national diversified groups to be recognized and promoted. The federal formula lacked genuine institutions and practices to promote democratic state unity in diversity. The federal system accelerated diversity which failed to balance ethno-national identity with Ethiopian state citizenship as a result it endangered the state sustenance. Failure to balance national diversity and Ethiopian citizenship brought adverse consequence, such as, ethnic based campus conflict among university students, the displacement of Oromos from Somali regional state, the displacement the Amharas and Oromos from Benishangul Gumuz, the Gedeo people’s displacement from Guji Oromia region…etc are some to mention. Above all, ethno-linguistic national identity is taken as a sole defining identity which has created a stumbling block for state/national building in Ethiopia. This article argues it is a must to foster a democratic federal political system in Ethiopia along with building genuine democratic institutions that are accountable to the people. There should, moreover, be a national consensus on maintaining state unity within diversity so that the voices of national minorities (both titular and non-titular) in different regions are heard and respected by allowing them to have political seats in their respective regions.

Ethiopian subsistence farmers traditionally store their grain harvests, leaving them open to storage pests and fungi that can cause contamination of major staple crops. Applying the most effective strategy requires a precise understanding of the insect species, infestation rates, storage losses, and storage conditions in the various types of farmers’ grain stores. This study did a complete literature analysis on post-harvest pest and management measures with a focus on Ethiopia. The most frequent insect pests of stored cereals in this study were weevils (Sitophilus spp.), the lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica), rust-red flour beetle (Tribolium sp.), sawtoothed grain beetle (Oryzaephilus sp.), grain beetle (Cryptolestes spp.), Indian meal moth (Plodia interpunctella), and Angoumois grain moth (Sitotroga cerealella). Flour beetles (Tribolium spp.), sawtoothed beetles (Oryzaephilus sp.), flat grain beetles (Cryptolestes pusillus), and some moths have been identified as common stored product pests of stored oil seed, while bruchid beetles (Callosobruchus chinensis) and the moths were reported for pulses. Additionally, the storage pests in Ethiopia under varied conditions caused storage losses of 9–64.5%, 13–95%, 36.9–51.9%, and 2–94.7% in maize, sorghum, chickpeas, and sesame, respectively. To reduce the losses incurred, preventative measures can be taken before infestations or as soon as infestations are discovered. A variety of pest population monitoring systems for harvested products and retailers have been developed and recommended. In this context, reducing post-harvest grain losses is an urgent concern for improving food accessibility and availability for many smallholder farmers in Ethiopia and ensuring the nation’s long-term food security.

Background: Adequate knowledge, awareness, and adherence to diabetic self-care practices are vital tools to protect patients from risks of disease complications, developing comorbidity and mortality. Therefore, this study aimed to assess specific domains of diabetic self-care practice and associated factors among patients with type-2diabetes in Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Sidama regional state. Materials and methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study design was conducted on 217 patients with type 2 diabetes from January 01 to April 30, 2020. A structured questionnaire and the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) tool were used to collect relevant data through interviewer administration. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 23. Results: A total of 207 patients with type-2 diabetes were participated in the study with a 95% response rate. Overall 47.8% (95%CI: 41.2-55) of patients adhered to diabetic self-care practice. Concerning the specific domain of self-care practice, 54.6%, 39.1%, 28%, and 65.2% of patients adhered to a healthy diet, physical exercise, self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG), and diabetic foot care practices, respectively. Besides, all patients received at least 80% of the prescribed doses and frequency of anti-diabetic agents and 60.4% had good glycemic control. Receipt of advice from treating physicians and having no familial history of diabetes were significantly associated with adherence toward eating a healthy diet, diabetic foot care, and SMBG. While male sex was associated with adherence toward healthy diet management. Moreover, having glucometer, age, male sex, diabetes duration ⩾ 5 years, and anti-diabetic treatment modality were associated with adherence toward SMBG. Conclusion: This study indicates 52.2%, 72%, and 60.1% of diabetes patients did not adhere to diabetic self-care, SMBG, and physical exercise, respectively. Improving awareness and regular diabetic education is imperative to scale up patients’ adherence toward diabetic self-care practice.

This study was designed as a descriptive case study to assess the socio- economic and safety conditions of coalmine workers at Achibo-Sombo of Yayo district, Ilu Abba Bor Zone, Oromia National Regional State, Ethiopia. The main objective of this study was to assess the socio-economic and safety conditions of coalmine workers by focusing on medical benefits, safety measures, employment relationship, labour union, wage/salary and psychosocial state. To this end, the research employed descriptive design guided by mixed research approach. The empirical data was obtained from 70 respondents via questionnaires, focus group discussions and interviews with key informats. Data collected was analyzed using stastical package for social scinence for descriptive statistics then presented in tables and charts in the form of cumulative frequency, percentage, correlation and chi-squire, while the qualitative data were analyzed by cross-analysis methods. The study found that the employment of a contractual nature does not take a formal legal procedure; mine workers were not organized in the form of union to defend/safeguard their interests and rights; lack of appropriate safety measures and health checkups, and low wage/salary. On the basis of the findings, provisions of safety measures, medical benefits, including pre and on job health examination for coalmine workers, issues of minimum wage policy and forming a trade union are serious concerns that should be addressed immediately.
