2. Elastic scattering of 3He+4He with SONIK

Abstract

Measurements of the elastic scattering cross section of 3He and 4He are important in order to improve constraints on theoretical models of 4He(3He,g)7Be, a key reaction in Big Bang nucleosynthesis and solar neutrino production. The astrophysical S-factor for this reaction is a significant source of uncertainty in the standard solar-model prediction of the 7Be and 8B solar neutrino fluxes. The elastic scattering measurements reported in the literature do not extend to low energies and lack proper uncertainty quantification. A new measurement of the 4He(3He,3He)4He reaction has been made at center-of-mass energies Ec.m. = 0.38-3.13 MeV using the Scattering of Nuclei in Inverse Kinematics (SONIK) scattering chamber: a windowless, extended gas target surrounded by an array of 30 collimated silicon charged particle detectors situated at TRIUMF. This is the first elastic scattering measurement of 3He+4He made below 500 keV and it has greater angular range and better precision than previous measurements. The elastic scattering data were analyzed using both R-matrix and Halo Effective Field Theory (Halo EFT) frameworks, and values of the s-wave scattering length and effective range were extracted. The resulting improvement in knowledge of the s-wave effective-range function at low energies will reduce the overall uncertainty in S34 at solar energies., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

A possible mechanism to explain the origin of the light $p$-nuclei in the Galaxy is the nucleosynthesis in the proton-rich neutrino-driven wind ejecta of core-collapse supernovae via the $\nu p$-process. However this production scenario is very sensitive to the underlying supernova dynamics and the nuclear physics input. As far as the nuclear uncertainties are concerned, the breakout from the $pp$-chains via the $^7$Be($\alpha,\gamma$)$^{11}$C reaction has been identified as an important link which can influence the nuclear flow and therefore the efficiency of the $\nu p$-process. However its reaction rate is poorly known over the relevant temperature range, T = 1.5-3 GK. We report on the first direct measurement of two resonances of the $^7$Be($\alpha,\gamma$)$^{11}$C reaction with previously unknown strengths using an intense radioactive $^7$Be beam from the ISAC facility and the DRAGON recoil separator in inverse kinematics. We have decreased the $^7$Be($\alpha,\gamma$)$^{11}$C reaction rate uncertainty to $\sim$ 9.4-10.7% over the relevant temperature region., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. Abstract

We have performed the first direct measurement of two resonances of the $^7$Be($\alpha,\gamma$)$^{11}$C reaction with unknown strengths using an intense radioactive $^7$Be beam and the DRAGON recoil separator. We report on the first measurement of the 1155 and 1110 keV resonance strengths of $1.73 \pm 0.25(stat.) \pm 0.40(syst.)$ eV and $125 ^{+27}_{-25}(stat.) \pm 15(syst.)$ meV, respectively. The present results have reduced the uncertainty in the $^7$Be($\alpha,\gamma$)$^{11}$C reaction rate to $\sim$ 9.4-10.7% over T = 1.5-3 GK, which is relevant for nucleosynthesis in the neutrino-driven outflows of core-collapse supernovae ($\nu p$-process). Abstract

Systematic examination of fusion for $^{39,41,45,47}$K + $^{28}$Si and $^{36,44}$Ar + $^{28}$Si provides insight into the impact of neutron and proton exchange on fusion for nuclei at and near the N=20 and N=28 shells. Comparison of the reduced excitation functions reveals a marked difference between the behavior of open-shell and closed-shell systems. While coupled channels calculations provide a good description for the closed-shell nuclei they significantly under-predict the fusion cross-section for open-shell nuclei. The observed trends are examined in the context of a potential energy surface, including shell effects, and multi-nucleon exchange with consideration of Pauli-blocking., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Radiative capture reactions play a pivotal role for our understanding of the origin of the elements in the cosmos. Recoil separators provide an effective way to study these reactions, in inverse kinematics, and take advantage of the use of radioactive ion beams. However, a limiting factor in the study of radiative capture reactions in inverse kinematics is the momentum spread of the product nuclei, which can result in an angular spread larger than the geometric acceptance of the separator. The DRAGON facility at TRIUMF is a versatile recoil separator, designed to study radiative capture reactions relevant to astrophysics in the $\mathrm{A \sim 10-30}$ region. In this work we present the first attempt to study with DRAGON a reaction, $\mathrm{^6Li(\alpha,\gamma)^{10}B}$ , for which the recoil angular spread exceeds DRAGON's acceptance. Our result is in good agreement with the literature value, showing that DRAGON can measure resonance strengths of astrophysically important reactions even when not all the recoils enter the separator., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in Nucl. Abstract

40K plays a significant role in the radiogenic heating of earth-like exoplanets, which can affect the development of a habitable environment on their surfaces. The initial amount of 40K in the interior of these planets depends on the composition of the interstellar clouds from which they formed. Within this context, nuclear reactions that regulate the production of 40K during stellar evolution can play a critical role. In this study, we constrain for the first time the astrophysical reaction rate of 40K(n,p)40Ar, which is responsible for the destruction of 40K during stellar nucleosynthesis. We performed differential cross-section measurements on the 40Ar(p,n)40K reaction, for six energies in the center-of-mass between 3.2 and 4.0 MeV and various angles between 0-deg and 135-deg. The experiment took place at the Edwards Accelerator Laboratory at Ohio University using the beam swinger target location and a standard neutron time-of-flight technique. The total and partial cross-sections varied with energy due to the contribution from isobaric analog states and Ericson type fluctuations. The energy-averaged neutron angular distributions were symmetrical relative to 90-deg and consistent with the theoretical predictions of the statistical model. Based on the experimental data, local transmission coefficients were extracted and were used to calculate the astrophysical reaction rates of 40Ar(p,n)40K and 40K(n,p)40Ar reactions. Our results support that the destruction rate of 40K in massive stars via the 40K(n,p)40Ar reaction is larger compared to previous estimates. This result directly affects the predicted stellar yields of 40K from nucleosynthesis, which is a critical input parameter for the galactic chemical evolution models that are currently employed for the study of significant properties of exoplanets., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, submitted to PRC (revised manuscript after referee's review)

Abstract

The astrophysical $S$-factor for the radiative proton capture reaction on $^7$Be ($S_{17}$) at low energies is affected by the $s$-wave scattering lengths. We report the measurement of elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections for the $^7$Be+p system in the center-of-mass energy range 0.474 - 2.740 MeV and center-of-mass angular range of 70$^\circ$- 150$^\circ$. A radioactive $^7$Be beam produced at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility was accelerated and bombarded a thin polypropylene (CH$_{2}$)$_\text n$ target. Scattered ions were detected in the segmented Silicon Detector Array. Using an $\textit{R}$-matrix analysis of ORNL and Louvain-la-Neuve cross section data, the $s$-wave scattering lengths for channel spins 1 and 2 were determined to be 17.34$^{+1.11}_{-1.33}$ and -3.18$^{+0.55}_{-0.50}$ fm, respectively. The uncertainty in the $s$-wave scattering lengths reported in this work is smaller by a factor of 5-8 compared to the previous measurement, which may reduce the overall uncertainty in $S_{17}$ at zero energy. The level structure of $^8$B is discussed based upon the results from this work. Evidence for the existence of 0$^+$ and 2$^+$ levels in $^8$B at 1.9 and 2.21 MeV, respectively, is observed.

Abstract

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have attracted considerable interest in sensing of weak magnetic fields, such as those created by biological systems. Detecting such feeble signals requires near-surface NV centers, to reduce the distance between NVs and sources. Moreover, dense ensembles of NVs are highly desirable to reduce measurement time. However, robust charge state switching is often observed in these systems, resulting in a complex interplay between charge and spin dynamics that can reduce the attainable level of spin polarization, and consequently, sensitivity. Understanding the mechanisms behind charge state switching is, therefore, crucial to developing NV based sensors. Here, we demonstrate a novel method to selectively measure charge dynamics in an ensemble of NVs by quenching the spin polarization using an off-axis magnetic field. Utilizing this technique, we show that, in nanodiamonds, charge state instability increases with increasing NV density. In the case of bulk single crystal diamond, we show that NV centers located near the surface are more stable in the neutral (NV$^{0}$) charge state, while the negatively charged (NV$^{-}$) form is more stable in bulk.

Abstract

Sensing of a few unpaired electron spins, such as metal ions and radicals, is a useful but difficult task in nanoscale physics, biology, and chemistry. Single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond offer high sensitivity and spatial resolution in the optical detection of weak magnetic fields produced by a spin bath, but often require long acquisition times, of the order of seconds. Here we use a novel approach, based on coupled spin and charge dynamics in dense NV ensembles in strongly fluorescent nanodiamonds (NDs) to sense external magnetic dipoles. We apply this approach to various paramagnetic species, including gadolinium complexes, magnetite nanoparticles and hemoglobin in whole blood. Taking advantage of the high NV density, we demonstrate detection of subnanomolar amounts of Gd spins with ultrashort acquisition time approaching 10 ms. Strong luminescence, high sensitivity and short acquisition time make dense NV- ensembles in NDs a powerful tool for biosensing and bioimaging applications.

26. Coupled charge and spin dynamics in high-density ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

Abstract

We studied the spin depolarization of ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in nitrogen-rich single crystal diamonds. We found a strong dependence of the evolution of the polarized state in the dark on the concentration of NV centers. At low excitation power, we observed a simple exponential decay profile in the low-density regime and a paradoxical inverted exponential profile in the high-density regime. At higher excitation power, we observed complex behavior, with an initial sharp rise in luminescence signal after the preparation pulse followed by a slower exponential decay. Magnetic field and excitation laser power-dependent measurements suggest that the rapid initial increase of the luminescence signal is related to recharging of the nitrogen-vacancy centers (from neutral to negatively charged) in the dark. The slow relaxing component corresponds to the longitudinal spin relaxation of the NV ensemble. The shape of the decay profile reflects the interplay between two mechanisms: the NV charge state conversion in the dark and the longitudinal spin relaxation. These mechanisms, in turn, are influenced by ionization, recharging and polarization dynamics during excitation. Interestingly, we found that charge dynamics are dominant in NV-dense samples even at very feeble excitation power. Abstract

The performance of hybrid composites in automotive applications has been improved using natural filler. Numerous researchers are analyzing to create the substitute hybrid materials for ecological sustainability and responsibility in environment. Hybrid composites are made by combining natural filler (CD—Cordia dichotoma) with reinforced polymer (PLA—polylactic acid) resin matrix composites which offer unique mechanical qualities because they contain more renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable materials than synthetic fillers. The objective of this research is to evaluate the dynamic mechanical behavior and thermal property of the addition of natural filler (CD) on the PLA resin for finding the structural effect in hybrid composites. CD natural filler loading on the PLA composites are fabricated by 3D printing. The experimental results demonstrate that composites containing 15 vol% of CD natural filler/PLA have a tensile strength of 14.2 MPa, a flexural strength of 29 MPa, and an impact strength of 1304 J/m2compared to other hybrid composites and the outcomes of the other tests are fully described in this paper. The composite material’s highest modulus of storage and temperature of glass transition are found in the 20 vol% filler CD component. The dielectric strength of the composite made with CD natural filler and PLA at a 20 vol% concentration is 4.73 KV/mm which is higher than that of the other composites. The lowest measurement for water absorption of 15 vol% of CD natural filler/PLA composite has been found the value of 6.5% lower than other composites.

Abstract

There are various sorts of projectiles which can be mounted in the rail gun. These projectiles are shot out in high velocities. Because of these high velocities the shot goes through a gigantic measure of drag. This drag is the central issue for the shot's effectiveness. This paper center around Round ball molded shot for electromagnetic rail gun and its working. The essential advantage of rail gun is a fired that can be pushed without using any engineered materials yet rather by using electric stream. It uses electromagnetic ability to ship off shots which are in between the two rails. A rail gun includes three segments a power source, several equivalent rails and a moving armature. A rail gun contains superconductive rails mounted agreed with each other with an in the center among them and is related with a DC supply. The shot gets speed through loathsome powers made by streaming current through equivalent rails. The driving of rail gun is achieved by changing over electrical energy into engine energy. The gun's general not entirely set in stone by rail gun design, power supply and inductance point. Abstract

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) metabolism is becoming an increasingly complex process during urbanization due to increasing rates of consumption and emission worldwide. Understanding the urban N and P metabolism helps identifying production capacity, consumption demand, and the impact of N and P emissions on the environment, providing a scientific basis for decision‐making in sustainable utilization of N and P resources. Quantifying and mapping the source, path, and sinks of N and P in an urban system is the premise of controlling emissions. In this paper, we used the substance flow analysis (SFA) method to describe the N and P metabolism processes in the urban system of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) in 2017, and used the scenario‐based analysis method to understand the impact of different N and P metabolisms on potentially recoverable N and P sources by 2030. The results showed that the urban system of Dar es Salaam receives a total input flow of 28,101.8 tN/year and 3,379 tP/year, with a total output flow of 18,859.6 tN/year and 1,849.3 tP/year with net stock changes of 9,242.2 t/year for N and 1,529.7 t/year for P, respectively. We noticed that increased human activities largely represented the city's waste released after the household consumption, and would become the main causes of N and P emissions. In addition to this, 59.38%, 31.25%, and 9.38% of N flow quantification quality were at high, medium, and low levels, respectively, while 74.07%, 11.11%, and 14.81% of P flow quantification quality were at high, medium, and low levels, respectively. Our results suggest that implementing integrated nutrient management measures, such as changes in people's diets and the use of washing products, and improved management and technologies of manure, sewage, and landfill leachate treatment, would be the most effective approach to resolve the urban nutrient emissions in Dar es Salaam. In this study, 323 stratified soil samples from a brownfield in Jiangsu Province, China, were collected to assess the heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, As and Hg) contaminations. Contamination factor (Cfi), Nemerow pollution index (PIN) and enrichment factor (EFi) were evaluated to assess the heavy metal pollution, while sources of pollution were identified in combination with geo‐statistical, correlations and principal components analysis. Moreover, transport of Ni in soil profiles over the next 30 years was simulated using HYDRUS. The vertical distribution revealed that the soil surface (0–10 cm) had the highest concentration of heavy metal contamination. ICP‐MS measurements showed that the soil in the brownfield was enriched with Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, As and Hg, where Ni was the most severe and prevalent contaminant. The results of source apportionment analysis showed that Ni, Cd, Pb and Cu were mainly derived from building materials and sewage discharge, while As and Hg may come from fossil fuel combustion and agricultural discharges from upstream river catchment. The migration of Ni was largely driven by the combination of hydrological variability including the flow and solute contaminant gradients in soils. Our work highlights the need for a comprehensive understanding of the complexity of hydrology, and sewage discharge in heavy metal dynamics and migration pathways in China's brownfield soil at regional and national scales. Abstract

Twenty first century faces unprecedented challenges for the management of global waterways. The Himalayan waterways in Asia are exposed to unpredictable climatic warming together with anthropogenic perturbations caused by population growth, land use change and socio‐economic development. Given the increased public concerns on the Himalayan Mountain development programmes including the hydropower and tourism, there has been a growing need of the use of interdisciplinary scientific approaches to address water resources challenges that the Himalayan region has faced during the 21st century. Ecohydrology is an emerging scientific tool that explores key hydrological processes regulating structure and function of ecosystems, as well as assessing the impact of biological processes on water cycle variables under rapidly changing environment. The International Geosphere‐Biosphere Programme and the International Hydrological Programme hosted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization have adopted ecohydrology as a sustainable development tool by linking water resources and poverty eradication and ecosystem restoration, irrigation, energy and sanitation. However, ecohydrology tool needs to be reconfigured for sustainable development of rapidly changing Himalayan waterways. Here we propose the advancement of ecohydrology by developing various integrated frameworks of ecology, hydrology, hydraulics and sociology for resilient waterways in the Asian Himalayas. Abstract

Airport efficiency depends on fast reactions to circum-stances. Local weather conditions may have an impact on airport operations, which may affect the network. Local weather events and airport operations may affect the network. Low visibility due to fog, thunderstorms, rain, etc. affects Patna Airport, India's 15th busiest airport. It is one of the Airports Authority of India's lucrative airports, located in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP), where fog reduces vision and interrupts traffic often in the post-monsoon and winter seasons. Because there is just one operating runway (07/25) at Jay Prakash Narayan International (JPNI) Airport, Patna, and around one hundred daily flight operations, any downtime might have a substantial monetary impact on the aviation services. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to carry out a quantitative study of the losses that are anticipated. This was the first study of its kind that looked at the impact of low visibility (due to fog and a thunderstorm) on economic losses at Patna Airport. This research also investigates the impacts that fog has on aviation services, in addition to its frequency, duration, and characteristics that are linked. Over Patna Airport, there were a total of 726 in-stances of fog (visibility<1000m) and 171 instances of dense fog (visibility<200m) during the studied period, i.e., April 2016 and March 2023 (7 years). As a result, the tactical level of analysis that this approach offers enables the stakeholders to enhance the services and better mitigate the impacts of local weather on the effective operation of the airports.
