5. Mechanism of formation of Co–Ru nanoalloys: the key role of Ru in the reduction pathway of Co.

Abstract

The chemical synthesis of alloy nanoparticles requires adequate conditions to enable co-reduction instead of separate reduction of the two metal cations. The mechanism of formation of bimetallic cobalt–ruthenium nanoalloys by reducing metal salts in an alcohol medium was explored to draw general rules to extrapolate to other systems. The relative kinetics of the reduction of both metal cations were studied by UV-visible and in situ Quick-X-ray absorption spectroscopies as well as H2 evolution. The addition of Co(II) ions does not influence the reduction kinetics of Ru(III) but adding Ru(III) to a Co(II) solution promotes the reduction of cobalt cations. Indeed, while CoO is formed when reaching the boiling temperature of the solvent for the monometallic system, a direct reduction of Co is observed at this temperature without formation of the oxide for the bimetallic one. The co-reduction of the metal cations results in the formation of bimetallic nanoplatelets, the size of which can be tuned by changing the Ru content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; The electrochemical surface area (ECSA) is a critical property to describe, analyze and compare electrocatalysts. The determination of the mass activity of a given catalyst is associated with this parameter which can thus lead to materials benchmarking. Reliable and robust methods to measure ECSA are needed, and those have to accommodate different structures, morphologies and compositions. In this study, we investigate mercury underpotential deposition (HgUPD) as a way to estimate ECSA for ultraporous electrocatalysts based on iridium and iridium-molybdenum electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction. Results reveal a clear agreement between physisorption measurements and HgUPD with excellent reproducibility. The method shows also that pre- and post-catalysis surface area measurements are not affected by the catalytic process on short timescale, opening the possibility of electrocalyst stability and degradation monitoring.

Abstract

Tetrazole is incorporated in high-density architectures suitable for lanthanide chelation and the isolation of lanthanide complexes with an unusual coordination sphere containing only N-donor atoms. The findings from electronic and geometric properties of these tetrazole-based ligands seem to be useful in development of lanthanide-based devices including MRI contrast agents and catalysts.

Abstract

A novice teacher as an expert teacher will have to teach the same activities and manage the same problems that may occur during classes: a situation that does not work, bad behavior from a student, missing equipment, etc. Those events will trigger reactions to the teachers nourishing nonverbal behavior essential for communication with others. We want to know what those reactions are, how they occur and whether they differ depending on the teacher's expertise. To avoid routine, we placed the expert teacher, subject of our experience, in a new situation for herself and for her students. Does she find herself really in trouble ? We filmed her and showed her the images in order to get her reactions. This self-confrontation has been linked with the actions filmed previously. Then we analyzed and compared with the reaction of the novice teacher. When the situation is unusual or does not go as planned, the teacher - whether he is expert or novice - must manage his emotions to take back the control of the course. Are the strategies the same for the expert teacher and the novice teacher ? What are the means implemented ?; Un enseignant novice comme un enseignant expert se retrouve à enseigner les mêmes activités et gérer les mêmes problèmes pouvant survenir en cours : situation qui ne fonctionne pas, comportement déviant d’un élève, matériel manquant, etc. Les évènements vont déclencher chez les protagonistes des réactions nourrissant le comportement non verbal essentiel à la communication avec autrui. Nous souhaitons alors savoir quelles sont ces réactions, comment elles se manifestent et si elles diffèrent en fonction de l’expertise de l’enseignant. Pour éviter la routine, nous avons donc placé l’enseignante experte, sujette de notre expérience, dans une situation nouvelle tant pour elle que pour ses élèves. Se retrouve-t-elle réellement en difficulté ? Nous l’avons filmée et confrontée aux images afin d’en relever les réactions. Ce temps d’autoconfrontation a été mis en lien avec les faits et gestes filmés préalablement. Puis nous l’avons analysée et comparée avec celle de l’enseignante novice. Lorsque la situation est inhabituelle ou ne se déroule pas comme prévu, l’enseignant qu’il soit expert ou novice doit gérer ses émotions pour reprendre le cours en main. Les stratégies d’expert sont elles les mêmes que celles du novice ? Quels sont les aménagements mis en place ?

Abstract

Metal catalysts are essential in the production of fuels and chemicals. Nonetheless, tailoring the exposed active sites to achieve the maximal theoretical conversion is still a great challenge. In the case of structure-sensitive reactions, such as the attractive acceptor-less alcohol dehydrogenation, playing on the exposed metallic sites appears as an appealing strategy. Still, this approach requires advanced preparation protocols and is even more difficult to implement for supported non-noble metal catalysts which easily undergo sintering. Using the polyol method, we synthesized fourteen different cobalt catalysts, which consist of unsupported shaped nanoparticles stabilized by adsorbed carboxylate ligands. Their shape and the amount of ligands were characterized by combining TEM and TGA-N2measurements. These catalysts were found to be active in the 2-octanol dehydrogenation conditionally upon an organic layer limited to 1 to 2 monolayers. Moreover, they were fully selective towards the desired ketone and H2. The active catalysts were stable, with no leaching or modification of the shape during the reaction. Periodic DFT computations predict a greater activity of the pristine open-type facet than of the compact one, but this is not confirmed experimentally with no clear correlation between the activity expressed in turnover number and the amount of a given type of site as quantified by TEM. Further modeling including the organic layer shows that the presence of ligands reduces the sensitivity to the metallic structure. Nonetheless, these ligands generate a catalytic pocket, similar to the one found in enzymes, that interacts with the alcohol substrate through H-bonding. This pocket is the most adapted to the alcohol dehydrogenation on the open-type facet, which is mainly exposed on rods. This detailed understanding paves the way to an improved design of bespoke unsupported catalysts considering simultaneously the structure and the nature of the ligand.

Abstract

National audience; In 2008, a nex invasive pest on tomato crop was accidentally introduced in France : the South American tomato leafminer Tuta absoluta. Phytophagus larvae are responsible for damage with a reduction in photosynthesis and fruit damage, causing yield loss. Despite the existence of some treatments against the pest that have low toxicity for beneficials, this new pest was real risk to crops in Integrated Biological Protection and Organic Agriculture on tomato. In this context was developped the CASDAR Project "TutaPi" (2011-2014), funded by the French Ministry of Agriculture. After three years of research, the results are positive, both in terms of the development and the effectiveness of strategies, and the importance of the role of beneficials. Collaboration and complementarity of the partners of this projetc, from research, experimentation and development has improved the knowledge of the pest. It validated and provided effective strategies for producers to control T.absoluta that are adapted to different crop conditions. A combination of methods and beneficial insects, either commercially available or naturally occurring, are at the heart of the strategy. The release of the predatory mirid bug Macrolophus pygmaeus had good control efficiency on T.absoluta and results were improved by simultaneus releases of Trichogramma achaeae. Since the new French legislation on the introduction of non native macro-organisms, it was of interest to work on endemic parasitoids, with lees risk to the environment and better adapted to our environmental conditions. The aim was also to find a more efficient and less expensive oophagous parasitoid (easier to mass rearing and storable) than T.achaeae

Abstract

BACKGROUND A 2 year study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of biological control with optimally timed Trichogramma brassicae releases as an integrated pest management tool against the European corn borer ( ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner), in on-farm experiments (i.e. real field conditions) in three European regions with dissimilar geoclimatic conditions and ECB pressure and conventional management (i.e. insecticide treated and untreated). RESULTS Biological control with Trichogramma (1) provided ECB protection comparable with conventional management, (2) in all cases maintained mycotoxin levels below the EU threshold for maize raw materials destined for food products, (3) was economically sustainable in southern France and northern Italy, but not in Slovenia where it resulted in a significant decrease in gross margin, mainly owing to the cost of Trichogramma product, and (4) enabled avoidance of detrimental environmental effects of lambda-cyhalothrin use in northern Italy. CONCLUSION Optimally timed mass release of T. brassicae could be considered a sustainable tool for IPM programmes against ECB in southern France and northern Italy. Better involvement of regional advisory services is needed for the successful dissemination and implementation of biological control. Abstract

A photochromic dithiazolylethene was used as bridging ligand to synthesize a series of homometallic binuclear complexes. It was found that the photochromic activity of the bridging ligand was maintained in solution only in the case of the copper binuclear complex. EPR studies revealed not only a weak magnetic coupling between the two copper ions, but also an interesting photo-controlled release and uptake of the Cu(hfac)2moiety in solution. Abstract

Iridium oxide is the gold‐standard catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media due to its unmatched activity and stability. Here, a new catalyst architecture comprising a nanoneedle network of iridium‐containing oxides assembled into macroporous micrometric particles with ≈75% of porosity is reported. The rationally designed porous hierarchical structure optimizes the accessibility of reactants and products to the surface of the nanoparticles and maximizes catalyst activity. The materials are easily prepared from aqueous solutions by an industrially viable spray‐drying route through an evaporation self‐assembly mechanism. The versatility of the process enables the preparation of mixed oxides with low iridium content, particles with tunable crystallinity, and various iridium surface species with high electrochemical activity. Highly porous Ir0.7Ru0.3O2 outperforms commercial iridium oxide. These materials also represent an ideal platform to assess the reactivity of the iridium and oxygen species involved in the oxygen evolution reaction. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that these highly porous particles are optimal building blocks to be integrated into catalyst layers, without the drawbacks associated with the use of discrete nanoparticles. Fresh‐ and end‐of‐test membrane–electrode assemblies' characterization shows that their particular architecture is preserved upon catalyst layer preparation and after operation in a proton‐exchange membrane electrolysis cell. Ultraporous nanocrystalline IrOx microspheres are optimal architectures to build highly porous catalyst layers. Easily prepared by a spray‐drying process, they consist of a nanoneedle network of iridium‐containing oxides assembled into macroporous micrometric particles with ≈75% of porosity. Abstract

The one-step seed-mediated synthesis is widely used for the preparation of ferromagnetic metal nanoparticles (NPs) since it offers a good control of particle morphology. Nevertheless, this approach suffers from a lack of mechanistic studies because of the difficulties of following in real time the heterogeneous nucleation and predicting structure effects with seeds that are generated in situ. Here, we propose a complete scheme of the heteronucleation process involved in one-pot seed-mediated syntheses of cobalt nanoparticles in liquid polyols, relying on geometrical phase analysis (GPA) of high-resolution high-angle annular dark field (HAADF)-STEM images and in situ measurements of the molecular hydrogen evolution. Cobalt particles of different shapes (rods, platelets, or hourglass-like particles) were grown by reducing cobalt carboxylate in liquid polyols in the presence of iridium or ruthenium chloride as the nucleating agent. A reaction scheme was established by monitoring the H2 evolution resulting from the decomposition of metal hydrides, formed in situ by β-elimination of metal alkoxides, and from the polyol dehydrogenation, catalytically activated by the metal particles. This is a very good probe for both the noble metal nucleation and the heterogeneous nucleation of cobalt, showing a good separation of these two steps. Ir and Ru seeds with a size in the range 1–2 nm were found exactly in the center of the cobalt particles, whatever the cobalt particle shape, and high-resolution images revealed an epitaxial growth of the hcp Co on fcc Ir or hcp Ru seeds. The microstructure analysis around the seeds made evident two different ways of relaxing the lattice mismatch between the seeds and the cobalt, with the presence of dislocations around the Ir seeds and compression zones of the cobalt lattice near the Ru seeds. 50. Green synthesis of water splitting electrocatalysts: IrO 2 nanocages via Pearson's chemistry.

Abstract

Highly porous iridium oxide structures are particularly well-suited for the preparation of porous catalyst layers needed in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers. Herein, we report the formation of iridium oxide nanostructured cages, via a water-based process performed at room temperature, using cheap Cu 2 O cubes as the template. In this synthetic approach, based on Pearson's hard and soft acid-base theory, the replacement of the Cu 2 O core by an iridium shell is permitted by the difference in hardness/softness of cations and anions of the two reactants Cu 2 O and IrCl 3 . Calcination followed by acid leaching allow the removal of residual copper oxide cores and leave IrO 2 hierarchical porous structures with outstanding activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction.
