1. Neutron-proton pairing in the unstable N=Z nuclei of the f-shell through two-nucleon transfer reactions

Abstract

Pair transfer is a unique tool to study pairing correlations in nuclei. Neutron-proton pairing is investigated in the N=Z nuclei of the f-shell, through the reaction (p,3He) in inverse kinematics, that allows to populate at the same time the lowest J=0+, T=1 (isovector pairing) state and J=1+, T=0 (isoscalar pairing) state. Radioactive beams of 56Ni and 52Fe produced by fragmentation at the GANIL/LISE facility combined with particle and gamma-ray detection make it possible to carry out this study from 48Cr (mid-shell nucleus) to 56Ni (doubly-magic nucleus). The cross-sections were extracted and compared with second-order distorted-wave born approximation (DWBA) calculations performed with neutron-proton amplitudes obtained from shell model calculations with GXPF1 interaction. Very low cross-sections for the J=1+,T=0 state (isoscalar channel) were observed. The cross-section for 56Ni is one of order of magnitude lower than for 40Ca showing a strong reduction of the isoscalar channel in the f-shell as compared to the sd-shell. On the other hand, the increase of the cross-section towards the middle of the shell for the isovector channel points towards a possible superfluid phase.

Abstract

We present the first measurement of the $^{47}$K($d,p\gamma$)$^{48}$K transfer reaction, performed in inverse kinematics using a reaccelerated beam of $^{47}$K. The level scheme of $^{48}$K has been greatly extended with nine new bound excited states identified and spectroscopic factors deduced. Detailed comparisons with SDPF-U and SDPF-MU shell-model calculations reveal a number of discrepancies with these results, and a preference for SDPF-MU is found. Intriguingly, an apparent systematic overestimation of spectroscopic factors and a poor reproduction of the energies for 1$^-$ states suggests that the mixing between the $\pi s^{\,\,\,1}_{1/2} d^{\,\,\,4}_{3/2}$ and $\pi s^{\,\,\,2}_{1/2} d^{\,\,\,3}_{3/2}$ proton configurations in $^{48}$K is not correctly described using current interactions, challenging our descriptions of light $N=28$ nuclei., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The excited states of unstable $^{20}$O were investigated via $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy following the $^{19}$O$(d,p)^{20}$O reaction at 8 $A$MeV. By exploiting the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method, the lifetime of the 2$^+_2$ and 3$^+_1$ states were firmly established. From the $\gamma$-ray branching and E2/M1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the 2$^+_2$ and 3$^+_1$ states, the B(E2) and B(M1) were determined. Various chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians, describing the nuclear properties beyond ground states, along with a standard USDB interaction, were compared with the experimentally obtained data. Such a comparison for a large set of $\gamma$-ray transition probabilities with the valence space in medium similarity renormalization group ab-initio calculations was performed for the first time in a nucleus far from stability. It was shown that the ab-initio approaches using chiral EFT forces are challenged by detailed high-precision spectroscopic properties of nuclei. Abstract

MUGAST is a state-of-the-art silicon array combining trapezoidal and square shaped double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSD) to four MUST2 telescopes. Coupled to a {\gamma}-ray spectrometer, the excellent angular coverage and compacity of the MUGAST array make it an ideal tool for the study of transfer reactions. It is a first step toward the development of the new generation of silicon arrays using pulse shape analysis (PSA) for particle identification, such as the future GRIT array developed by our collaboration. In recent years, MUGAST has been widely used at GANIL. First with the AGATA {\gamma}-ray spectrometer and the VAMOS large acceptance spectrometer for the study of ISOL beams from the SPIRAL1 facility. It is now coupled with twelve EXOGAM clovers and to a new zero degree detection system at the end of the LISE fragmentation beamline.

Abstract

The last proton bound calcium isotope $^{35}$Ca has been studied for the first time, using the $^{37}$Ca($p, t$)$^{35}$Ca two neutron transfer reaction. The radioactive $^{37}$Ca nuclei, produced by the LISE spectrometer at GANIL, interacted with the protons of the liquid hydrogen target CRYPTA, to produce tritons $t$ that were detected in the MUST2 detector array, in coincidence with the heavy residues Ca or Ar. The atomic mass of $^{35}$Ca and the energy of its first 3/2$^+$ state are reported. A large $N=16$ gap of 4.61(11) MeV is deduced from the mass measurement, which together with other measured properties, makes $^{36}$Ca a doubly-magic nucleus. The $N = 16$ shell gaps in $^{36}$Ca and $^{24}$O are of similar amplitude, at both edges of the valley of stability. This feature is discussed in terms of nuclear forces involved, within state-of-the-art shell model calculations. Even though the global agreement with data is quite convincing, the calculations underestimate the size of the $N = 16$ gap in 36Ca by 840(110) keV.

Abstract

STRASSE (Silicon Tracker for RAdioactive nuclei Studies at SAMURAI Experiments) is a new detection system under construction for quasi-free scattering (QFS) measurements at 200-250 MeV/nucleon at the RIBF facility of the RIKEN Nishina Center. It consists of a charged-particle silicon tracker coupled with a dedicated thick liquid hydrogen target (up to 150-mm long) in a compact geometry to fit inside large scintillator or germanium arrays. Its design was optimized for two types of studies using QFS: missing-mass measurements and in-flight prompt $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy. This article describes (i) the resolution requirements needed to go beyond the sensitivity of existing systems for these two types of measurements, (ii) the conceptual design of the system using detailed simulations of the setup and (iii) its complete technical implementation and challenges. The final tracker aims at a sub-mm reaction vertex resolution and is expected to reach a missing-mass resolution below 2 MeV in $\sigma$ for $(p,2p)$ reactions when combined with the CsI(Na) CATANA array., Comment: 25 pages, 29 figures

Abstract

Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-deficient nucleus $^{36}$Ca was obtained up to 9 MeV using the $^{37}$Ca($p$,$d$)$^{36}$Ca and the $^{38}$Ca($p$,$t$)$^{36}$Ca transfer reactions. The radioactive nuclei, produced by the LISE spectrometer at GANIL, interacted with the protons of the liquid Hydrogen target CRYPTA, to produce light ejectiles (the deuteron $d$ or triton $t$) that were detected in the MUST2 detector array, in coincidence with the heavy residues %identified by a zero degree detection system. %States have been measured up to 9 MeV. Our main findings are: i) a similar shift in energy for the 1$^+_1$ and 2$^+_1$ states by about -250 keV, as compared to the mirror nucleus $^{36}$S, ii) the discovery of an intruder 0$^+_2$ state at 2.83(13) MeV, which appears below the first 2$^+$ state, in contradiction with the situation in $^{36}$S, and iii) a tentative 0$^+_3$ state at 4.83(17) MeV, proposed to exhibit a bubble structure with two neutron vacancies in the 2s$_{1/2}$ orbit. The inversion between the 0$^+_2$ and 2$^+_1$ states is due to the large mirror energy difference (MED) of -516(130) keV for the former. This feature is reproduced by Shell Model (SM) calculations, using the $sd$-$pf$ valence space, predicting an almost pure intruder nature for the 0$^+_2$ state, with two protons (neutrons) being excited across the $Z$=20 magic closure in $^{36}$Ca ($^{36}$S). This mirror system has the largest MEDs ever observed, if one excludes the few cases induced by the effect of the continuum., Comment: Paper of 5 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

The structure of the unbound $^{15}$F nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive $^{14}$O beam impinging on a CH$_2$ target. The analysis of $^{1}$H($^{14}$O,p)$^{14}$O and $^{1}$H($^{14}$O,2p)$^{13}$N reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow $1/2^{-}$ resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2$^{-}$ and 3/2$^{-}$ resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of $^{14}$O, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state (g.s.) of $^{13}$N via the $1^-$ resonance of $^{14}$O. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2$^{-}$ and 3/2$^{-}$ resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p- decay channels. The observed excitation function $^{1}$H($^{14}$O,p)$^{14}$O and resonance spectrum in $^{15}$F are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

A recent sensitivity study has shown that the $^{35}$K$(p,\gamma)^{36}$Ca reaction is one of the ten $(p,\gamma)$ reaction rates that could significantly impact the shape of the calculated X-ray burst light curve. In this work, we propose to reinvestigate the $^{35}$K$(p,\gamma)^{36}$Ca reaction rate, as well as related uncertainties, by determining the energies and decay branching ratios of $^{36}$Ca levels, within the Gamow window, in the 0.5 to 2 GK X-ray burst temperature range. These properties were studied using the one neutron pick-up transfer reaction $^{37}$Ca$(p,d)^{36}$Ca in inverse kinematics using a radioactive beam of $^{37}$Ca at 48 MeV nucleon$^{-1}$. The experiment performed at GANIL, used the liquid Hydrogen target CRYPTA, the MUST2 detector array for the detection of the light charged particles and a zero degree detection system for the outgoing heavy ions. The atomic mass of $^{36}$Ca is confirmed and new resonances have been proposed together with their proton decay branching ratios. This spectroscopic information, used in combination with recent theoretical predictions for the $\gamma$-width, were used to calculate the $^{35}$K$(p,\gamma)^{36}$Ca reaction rate. The recommended rate of the present work was obtain within a uncertainty factor of 2 at 1 sigma. This is consistent, with the previous estimate in the X-ray burst temperature range. A large increase of the reaction rate was found at higher temperatures due to two newly discovered resonances. The $^{35}$K$(p,\gamma)^{36}$Ca thermonuclear reaction rate is now well constrained by the present work in a broad range of temperatures. Our results show that the $^{35}$K$(p,\gamma)^{36}$Ca reaction does not affect the shape of the X-ray burst light curve, and that it can be removed from the list of the few influential proton radiative captures reactions having a strong impact on the light curve., Comment: Published 13 May 2021 in PRC

Abstract

The MUGAST-AGATA-VAMOS set-up at GANIL combines the MUGAST highly-segmented silicon array with the state-of-the-art AGATA array and the large acceptance VAMOS spectrometer. The mechanical and electronics integration copes with the constraints of maximum efficiency for each device, in particular {\gamma}-ray transparency for the silicon array. This complete set-up offers a unique opportunity to perform exclusive measurements of direct reactions with the radioactive beams from the SPIRAL1 facility. The performance of the set-up is described through its commissioning and two examples of transfer reactions measured during the campaign. High accuracy spectroscopy of the nuclei of interest, including cross-sections and angular distributions, is achieved through the triple-coincidence measurement. In addition, the correction from Doppler effect of the {\gamma}-ray energies is improved by the detection of the light particles and the use of two-body kinematics and a full rejection of the background contributions is obtained through the identification of heavy residues. Moreover, the system can handle high intensity beams (up to 108 pps). The particle identification based on the measurement of the time-of-flight between MUGAST and VAMOS and the reconstruction of the trajectories is investigated., Comment: 13 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

The unbound proton-rich nuclei $^{16}$F and $^{15}$F are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Several experiments using the resonant elastic scattering method were performed at GANIL with radioactive beams to determine the properties of the low lying states of these nuclei. Strong asymmetry between $^{16}$F-$^{16}$N and $^{15}$F-$^{15}$C mirror nuclei is observed. The strength of the $nucleon-nucleon$ effective interaction involving the loosely bound proton in the $s_{1/2}$ orbit is significantly modified with respect to their mirror nuclei $^{16}$N and $^{15}$C. The reduction of the effective interaction is estimated by calculating the interaction energies with a schematic zero-range force. It is found that, after correcting for the effects due to changes in the radial distribution of the single-particle wave functions, the mirror symmetry of the $n-p$ interaction is preserved between $^{16}$F and $^{16}$N, while a difference of 63\% is measured between the $p-p$ versus $n-n$ interactions in the second excited state of $^{15}$F and $^{15}$C nuclei. Several explanations are proposed.

Abstract

International audience; The last proton bound calcium isotope $^{35}$Ca has been studied for the first time, using the $^{37}$Ca($p, t$)$^{35}$Ca two neutron transfer reaction. The radioactive $^{37}$Ca nuclei, produced by the LISE spectrometer at GANIL, interacted with the protons of the liquid hydrogen target CRYPTA, to produce tritons $t$ that were detected in the MUST2 detector array, in coincidence with the heavy residues Ca or Ar. The atomic mass of $^{35}$Ca and the energy of its first 3/2$^+$ state are reported. A large $N=16$ gap of 4.61(11) MeV is deduced from the mass measurement, which together with other measured properties, makes $^{36}$Ca a doubly-magic nucleus. The $N = 16$ shell gaps in $^{36}$Ca and $^{24}$O are of similar amplitude, at both edges of the valley of stability. This feature is discussed in terms of nuclear forces involved, within state-of-the-art shell model calculations. Even though the global agreement with data is quite convincing, the calculations underestimate the size of the $N = 16$ gap in 36Ca by 840(110) keV.

Abstract

We report the first high-precision mass measurements of the neutron-rich nuclei $^{74,75}$Ni and the clearly identified ground state of $^{76}$Cu, along with a more precise mass-excess value of $^{78}$Cu, performed with the double Penning trap JYFLTRAP at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility. These new results lead to a quantitative estimation of the quenching for the N=50 neutron shell gap. The impact of this shell quenching on core-collapse supernova dynamics is specifically tested using a dedicated statistical equilibrium approach that allows a variation of the mass model independent of the other microphysical inputs. We conclude that the impact of nuclear masses is strong when implemented using a fixed trajectory as in the previous studies, but the effect is substantially reduced when implemented self-consistently in the simulation.

Abstract

The structure of the unbound 15F nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive 14O beam impinging on a CH2 target. The analysis of 1H(14O,p)14O and 1H(14O,2p)13N reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow 1/2− resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2− and 3/2− resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of 14O, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state of 13N via the 1− resonance of 14O. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2− and 3/2− resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p-decay channels. The observed excitation function 1H(14O,p)14O and resonance spectrum in 15F are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM.

Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2− and 3/2− resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p-decay channels. The observed excitation function 1H(14O,p)14O and resonance spectrum in 15F are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM.

Abstract

International audience; Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-deficient nucleus Ca36 was obtained up to 9 MeV using the Ca37(p,d)Ca36 and the Ca38(p,t)Ca36 transfer reactions. The radioactive nuclei, produced by the LISE spectrometer at GANIL, interacted with the protons of the liquid hydrogen target CRYPTA, to produce light ejectiles (the deuteron d or triton t) that were detected in the MUST2 detector array, in coincidence with the heavy residues identified by a zero-degree detection system. Our main findings are (i) a similar shift in energy for the 11+ and 21+ states by about -250 keV, as compared with the mirror nucleus S36; (ii) the discovery of an intruder 02+ state at 2.83(13) MeV, which appears below the first 2+ state, in contradiction with the situation in S36; and (iii) a tentative 03+ state at 4.83(17) MeV, proposed to exhibit a bubble structure with two neutron vacancies in the 2s1/2 orbit. The inversion between the 02+ and 21+ states is due to the large mirror energy difference (MED) of -516(130) keV for the former. This feature is reproduced by shell model calculations, using the sd-pf valence space, predicting an almost pure intruder nature for the 02+ state, with two protons (neutrons) being excited across the Z=20 magic closure in Ca36 (S36). This mirror system has the largest MEDs ever observed, if one excludes the few cases induced by the effect of the continuum.

Abstract

International audience; The structure of the unbound F15 nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive O14 beam impinging on a CH2 target. The analysis of H1(O14,p)O14 and H1(O14,2p)N13 reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow 1/2− resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2− and 3/2− resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of O14, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state of N13 via the 1− resonance of O14. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2− and 3/2− resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p-decay channels. The observed excitation function H1(O14,p)O14 and resonance spectrum in F15 are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM.

Abstract

The unbound proton-rich nuclei 16F and 15F are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Several experiments using the resonant elastic scattering method were performed at GANIL with radioactive beams to determine the properties of the low lying states of these nuclei. Strong asymmetry between 16F–16N and 15F–15C mirror nuclei is observed. The strength of the nucleon- nucleon effective interaction involving the loosely bound proton in the s1 / 2 orbit is significantly modified with respect to their mirror nuclei 16N and 15C. The reduction of the effective interaction is estimated by calculating the interaction energies with a schematic zero-range force. It is found that, after correcting for the effects due to changes in the radial distribution of the single-particle wave functions, the mirror symmetry of the n- p interaction is preserved between 16F and 16N, while a difference of 63% is measured between the p- p versus n- n interactions in the second excited state of 15F and 15C nuclei. Abstract

The half-life of Ne-19 was measured using a real-time digital multiparametric acquisition system, providing an accurate time stamp and relevant information on the detector signals for each decay event. An exhaustive offline analysis of the data gave unique access to experimental effects potentially biasing the measurement. After establishing the influence factors impacting the measurement such as after-pulses, pile-up, gain, and baseline fluctuations, their effects were accurately estimated and the event selection optimized. The resulting half-life, 17.2569 +/- 0.0019((stat)) +/- 0.0009((syst)) s, is the most precise up to now for Ne-19. It is found to be in agreement with two recent precise measurements and not consistent with the most recent one [L.J. Broussard et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 212301 (2014)] by 3.0 standard deviations. The full potential of the technique for nuclei with half-lives of a few seconds is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The half-life of Ne19 was measured using a real-time digital multiparametric acquisition system, providing an accurate time stamp and relevant information on the detector signals for each decay event. An exhaustive offline analysis of the data gave unique access to experimental effects potentially biasing the measurement. After establishing the influence factors impacting the measurement such as after-pulses, pile-up, gain, and baseline fluctuations, their effects were accurately estimated and the event selection optimized. The resulting half-life, 17.2569±0.0019(stat)±0.0009(syst) s, is the most precise up to now for Ne19. It is found to be in agreement with two recent precise measurements and not consistent with the most recent one [L. J. Broussard , Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 212301 (2014)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.112.212301] by 3.0 standard deviations. The full potential of the technique for nuclei with half-lives of a few seconds is discussed.

Abstract

Isomers close to the doubly magic nucleus 78Ni (Z = 28 , N = 50) provide essential information on the shell evolution and shape coexistence far from stability. The existence of a long-lived isomeric state in 76Cu has been debated for a long time. We have performed high-precision mass measurements of 76Cu with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility and confirm the existence of such an isomeric state with an excitation energy E x = 64.8 (25) keV. Based on the ratio of detected ground- and isomeric-state ions as a function of time, we show that the isomer is the shorter-living state previously considered as the ground state of 76Cu. The result can potentially change the conclusions made in previous works related to the spin-parity and charge radius of the 76Cu ground state. Additionally, the new 76Cu (n , γ) reaction Q -value has an impact on the astrophysical rapid neutron-capture process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Isomers close to doubly magic &#95;{28}^{78}Ni&#95;{50} provide essential information on the shell evolution and shape coexistence near the Z=28 and N=50 double shell closure. We report the excitation energy measurement of the 1/2^{+} isomer in &#95;{30}^{79}Zn&#95;{49} through independent high-precision mass measurements with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap and with the ISOLTRAP multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer. We unambiguously place the 1/2^{+} isomer at 942(10) keV, slightly below the 5/2^{+} state at 983(3) keV. With the use of state-of-the-art shell-model diagonalizations, complemented with discrete nonorthogonal shell-model calculations which are used here for the first time to interpret shape coexistence, we find low-lying deformed intruder states, similar to other N=49 isotones. The 1/2^{+} isomer is interpreted as the bandhead of a low-lying deformed structure akin to a predicted low-lying deformed band in ^{80}Zn, and points to shape coexistence in ^{79,80}Zn similar to the one observed in ^{78}Ni. The results make a strong case for confirming the claim of shape coexistence in this key region of the nuclear chart.

37. N=16 Magicity Revealed at the Proton Drip Line through the Study of ^{35}Ca.

Abstract

The last proton bound calcium isotope ^{35}Ca has been studied for the first time, using the ^{37}Ca(p,t)^{35}Ca two neutron transfer reaction. The radioactive ^{37}Ca nuclei, produced by the LISE spectrometer at GANIL, interacted with the protons of the liquid hydrogen target CRYPTA, to produce tritons t that were detected in the MUST2 detector array, in coincidence with the heavy residues Ca or Ar. The atomic mass of ^{35}Ca and the energy of its first 3/2^{+} state are reported. A large N=16 gap of 4.61(11) MeV is deduced from the mass measurement, which together with other measured properties, makes ^{36}Ca a doubly magic nucleus. The N=16 shell gaps in ^{36}Ca and ^{24}O are of similar amplitude, at both edges of the valley of stability. This feature is discussed in terms of nuclear forces involved, within state-of-the-art shell model calculations. Even though the global agreement with data is quite convincing, the calculations underestimate the size of the N=16 gap in ^{36}Ca by 840 keV.
