6. Quantitative 4D X-ray microtomography under extreme conditions: a case study on magma migration.

- Abstract
X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is a well known method for three-dimensional characterization of materials that is established as a powerful tool in high-pressure/high-temperature research. The optimization of synchrotron beamlines and the development of fast high-efficiency detectors now allow the addition of a temporal dimension to tomography studies under extreme conditions. Presented here is the experimental setup developed on the PSICHE beamline at SOLEIL to perform high-speed XCT in the Ultra-fast Tomography Paris-Edinburgh cell (UToPEc). The UToPEc is a compact panoramic (165° angular aperture) press optimized for fast tomography that can access 10 GPa and 1700°C. It is installed on a high-speed rotation stage (up to 360° s
-1 ) and allows the acquisition of a full computed tomography (CT) image with micrometre spatial resolution within a second. This marks a major technical breakthrough for time-lapse XCT and the real-time visualization of evolving dynamic systems. In this paper, a practical step-by-step guide to the use of the technique is provided, from the collection of CT images and their reconstruction to performing quantitative analysis, while accounting for the constraints imposed by high-pressure and high-temperature experimentation. The tomographic series allows the tracking of key topological parameters such as phase fractions from 3D volumetric data, and also the evolution of morphological properties (e.g. volume, flatness, dip) of each selected entity. The potential of this 4D tomography is illustrated by percolation experiments of carbonate melts within solid silicates, relevant for magma transfers in the Earth's mantle.- Published

7. Compatibility of Amino Acids in Ice Ih: Implications for the Origin of Life.

- Abstract
Icy environments may have been common on early Earth due to the faint young sun. Previous studies have proposed that the formation of large icy bodies in the early ocean could concentrate the building blocks of life in eutectic fluids and, therefore, facilitate the polymerization of monomers. This hypothesis is based on the untested assumption that organic molecules are virtually incompatible in ice Ih (hexagonal ice). In this study, we conducted freezing experiments to explore the partitioning behavior of selected amino acids (AAs; glycine, l-alanine, l-proline, and l-phenylalanine) between ice Ih and aqueous solutions analogous to seawater. We allowed ice crystals to grow slowly from a few seeds in equilibrium with the solution and used Raman spectroscopy to analyze in situ the relative concentrations of AAs in the ice and aqueous solution. During freezing, there was no precipitation of AA crystals, indicating that the concentrations in solution never reached their solubility limit, even when the droplet was mostly frozen. Analyses of the Raman spectra of the ice and eutectic solution suggested that considerable amounts of AAs existed in the ice phase with partition coefficients varying between 0.2 and 0.5. These observations imply little incompatibility of AAs in ice Ih during the freezing of the solutions, rendering the concentration hypothesis in a eutectic system unwarranted. However, incorporation into ice Ih could protect AAs from decomposition or racemization and significantly improve the efficiency of extraterrestrial transport of small organics. Therefore, this study supports the hypothesis of extraterrestrial delivery of organic molecules in icy comets and asteroids to the primitive Earth as suggested by an increasing number of independent observations. - Abstract
The physiological aging is frequently associated with structural alterations determining a loss of elasticity both of left ventricular wall (that goes towards hypertrophy), and of great and small arteries and arterioles (that have their compliance reduced). In fact, in our experience, the elderly have, in comparison with younger people, greater values of end diastolic thickness of the septum and of the posterior wall (respectively 10.7 +/- 1.5 vs 9.4 +/- 1 and 10.4 +/- 1.7 vs 9.0 +/- 0.9), of the aortic index, that is inversely related to arterial compliance (0.74 +/- 0.06 vs 0.66 +/- 0.05) as well as of minimal vascular resistances, expression of an impaired maximal vasodilation capacity of the arteriolar bed (4.27 +/- 1.08 vs 3.68 +/- 0.91). At cardiac level the global effect of these changes is a remodelling able to maintain a normal function both at rest and after exercise, i.e., a greater intervention of Frank-Starling mechanisms with increase of the end diastolic volume, in order to counteract the lower chronotropic response to catecholamines. At peripheral level the structural changes in the arterial tree (consequent to an increased collagen content in the intimal and medial components of the vessel walls) lead to an increase in blood pressure with aging: in our study by non-invasive blood pressure monitoring mean 24-hours blood pressure values have been the following ones: 116.4 +/- 3.8/72.1 +/- 7.2 mmHg in 25-35 years aged; 121.8 +/- 9.1/75.9 +/- 5.3 mmHg in 45-55 years aged; and 128.4 +/- 10.1/76.4 +/- 7.8 mmHg in aged more than 60 years. On the other hand, the greater cardiac output during stress, together with the lower arterial vasodilation (consequent also to the impaired function of the baroceptor reflexes) determines an exaggerated systolic blood pressure increase after exercise.

- Abstract
In the present study the effects of a short term intensive glycaemic control obtained with subcutaneous insulin therapy on lipids and apoprotein levels, platelet aggregation, platelet sensitivity to prostacyclin and platelet thromboxane production were investigated in 20 patients with type 2 diabetes and vascular disease. In 11 out of the 20 patients there was a significant improvement of glycaemic control (fructosamine reduction). Only with tight improvement of glycaemic control there was significant change in the concentration of ADP and collagen required to produce 50% of the maximum aggregation wave response, in the responsiveness of platelet to PGI2 and in the TxB2 synthesis. Lower Apo B levels were also shown in the tight control group suggesting that Apo B changes may have influenced platelet aggregation and thromboxane synthesis.
