L’articolo studia il rapporto tra videogiochi e letteratura dal punto di vista dell’immaginario romanzesco investigativo/poliziesco sottostante ai prodotti italiani fra il 2010 e il 2020, contribuendo tanto agli studi letterari quanto alla sociologia culturale del gaming. La duplice ipotesi di ricerca è che (1) i videogiochi mystery-investigativi concepiti da sviluppatori italiani si ergano su fondamenta immaginativo-culturali di riferimenti letterari del genere e (2) il loro gameplay rifletta il gusto per l’indagine razionale comune alla narrativa investigativa di matrice positivista. Metodologicamente, si è applicata la tecnica dell’intervista semi-strutturata a un campione di dieci developer, noti agli autori per le loro produzioni nell’ambito considerato. L’analisi tematica di questi colloqui ha consentito di catalogare i videogiochi esaminati in base alla loro vicinanza rispetto alle opere letterarie di riferimento, di volta in volta stretta, lasca o nulla, a seconda che i romanzi di riferimento siano emersi come ispirazione diretta, indiretta o assente, laddove probabilmente: nel primo caso il gioco non esisterebbe senza il romanzo originario, nel secondo non esisterebbe senza alcuni prodotti mediali derivati dal romanzo originario e nel terzo esiste indipendentemente da un romanzo relativo.

In today’s media landscape, China plays a leading role in the production of traditional and new media alike. it is the video-game sector that demands the greatest attention from whomever aims at understanding today’s China’s cultural imaginary’s worldwide impact, for at least three reasons: 1) video games are the most lucrative entertainment industry; 2) video games are osmotically spread in the Western world; 3) Chinese video games’ export has been on the rise since the second half of the last decade. The anthropomorphic robot has been a constant presence in Chinese science fiction, alternatively threat and aid to man’s existence, following diverse degrees of human-likeness. What role does this topic play in Chinese exported video games, and thus in its spreading in the Western world? The analysis of a selection of video games - PC games chosen based on their Steam success, and mobile ones based on their App Store success (i.e., Dyson Sphere Program, Eastward, Honkai Impact 3rd, ICEY, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and Super Mecha Champions) - allowed for mapping the AR's presence within them, meanwhile putting it in relation with the Chinese cultural background, thus deriving the conclusion that it takes six different forms, from the least to the most human-like in terms of appearance and self-awareness: the mecha, the sentient mecha, the android, the cyborg, the yuri warrior, and the human clone.

The increasing sociocultural importance of the video game medium, the most lucrative segment of the entertainment industry worldwide, calls for ever more scholarly attention. This contribution is concerned with the narrative aspect of the medium, focussing on how, since its affirmation in the Nineties, the most successful video games reinterpreted Campbell’s “hero’s journey”: part of the games presents a traditional narrative structure, while another is characterised by an innovative tension, for which it modifies some of the traditional phases of the narrative.
