Two coordination complexes have been made by combining the dithiolene complexes [M(mnt)2]2- (mnt = maleonitriledithiolate; M = Ni2+ or Cu2+) as anion, with the copper(II) coordination complex [Cu(Stetra)] (Stetra = 6,6'-bis(4,5-dihydrothiazol-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyri-dine) as cation. The variation of the metal centers leads to a dramatic change in the conductivity of the materials, with the M = Cu2+ variant (Cu-Cu) displaying semiconductor behavior with a conductivity of approximately 2.5 × 10-8 S cm-1, while the M = Ni2+ variant (Ni-Cu) displayed no observable conductivity. Computational studies found Cu-Cu enables a minimization of reorganization energy losses and, as a result, a lower barrier to the charge transfer process, resulting in the reported higher conductivity.

Analysis of properties and data – both known and missing – related to materials selection, life cycle assessment, and end-of-life reuse and recycling options for device components to achieve a sustainable design of dye-sensitized solar cells.

The current state of the art on material science emphasizes recent research efforts aimed at designing novel materials characterized by low-density and advanced properties. The present article reports the experimental, theoretical and simulation results on the thermal behavior of 3D printed discs. Filaments of pure poly (lactic acid) PLA and filled with 6 wt% of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) are used as feedstocks. Experiments indicate that the introduction of graphene enhances the thermal properties of the resulting materials since the conductivity passes from the value of 0.167 [W/mK] for unfilled PLA to 0.335 [W/mK] for reinforced PLA, which corresponds to a significantly improvement of 101%. Exploiting the potential of 3D printing, different air cavities have been intentionally designed to develop new lightweight and more cost-effective materials without compromising their thermal performances. Furthermore, some cavities are equal in volume but different in the geometry; it is necessary to investigate how this last characteristic and its possible orientations affect the overall thermal behavior compared to that of an air-free specimen. The influence of air volume is also investigated. Experimental results are supported by theoretical analysis and simulation studies based on the finite element method. The results aim to be a valuable reference resource in the field of design and optimization of lightweight advanced materials.

Graphene, due to its unique electronic structure favoring high carrier mobility, is considered a promising material for use in high-speed electronic devices in the post-silicon electronic era. For this reason, experimental research on graphene-based field-effect transistors (GFETs) has rapidly increased in the last years. However, despite the continuous progress in the optimization of such devices many critical issues remain to be solved such as their reproducibility and performance uniformity against possible variations originated by the manufacturing processes or the operating conditions. In the present work, changes of the ID-VDS characteristics of a Graphene Field-Effect Transistors, caused by a tolerance of 10% in the active channel (i.e. its length and width) and in the top oxide thickness are numerically investigated in order to assess the reliability of such devices. Design of Experiments (DoE) is adopted with the aim to identify the most influential factors on the electrical performance of the device, so that the fabrication process may be suitably optimized., Comment: 13 pages,8 figures, 2 tables

Carbon Nanotubes have been incorporated in a resin-based on the bi-functional epoxy precursor diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA). Electrical measurements allowed evaluating the electric percolation curve with a value of electric percolation threshold detected around 0.015% by weight of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). It has been found, by electro-mechanical tests, that the Gauge Factor (G.F.) decreases with increasing the carbon nanotubes percentage. Furthermore, the presence of a residual resistivity allows diagnosing permanent damage in the epoxy matrix. High piezoresistive performance (G.F. = 4.7) of the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Panels (CFRP) coated with the epoxy resin containing 0.1 wt% of MWCNT, has been obtained.

Many research efforts have been directed towards enhancing the thermal properties of polymers, since they are classically regarded as thermal insulators. To this end, the present study focuses on the thermal investigation of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) filled with two types of carbon nanotubes (trade names: TNIMH4 and N7000), two type of graphene nanoplatelets (trade names: TNIGNP and TNGNP), or their appropriate combination. A significant increase in the thermal conductivity by 254% with respect to that of unfilled polymer was achieved in the best case by using 9 wt% TNIGNP, resulting from its favorable arrangement and the lower thermal boundary resistance between the two phases, matrix and filler. To theoretically assist the design of such advanced nanocomposites, Design of Experiments (DoE) and Response Surface Method (RSM) were employed, respectively, to obtain information on the conditioning effect of each filler loading on the thermal conductivity and to find an analytical relationship between them. The numerical results were compared with the experimental data in order to confirm the reliability of the prediction. Finally, a simulation study was carried out with Comsol Multiphysics® for a comparative study between two heat sinks based on pure PLA, and to determine the best thermally performing nanocomposite with a view towards potential use in heat transfer applications.

In the present study, nanocomposite materials for structural applications with self-sensing properties are proposed. In particular, suitable processing of epoxy resins filled with carbon nanotubes and expanded graphite characterized by very different aspect ratio leads to nanocomposite systems with high glass transition temperatures and remarkable values of the gauge factor. In particular, this notable property ranges between four, for composites filled with one-dimensional nanofiller, and 39 for composites with two-dimensional (2D) graphite derivatives. The greater sensitivity of the 2D system against permanent deformations is interpreted on the basis of an empirical mathematical model and morphological descriptions. The larger inter-contact area among the graphite layers determines a larger contact resistance change than that occurring among carbon nanotubes. The proposed systems turn out to be very advantageous in strain-sensor applications where damage detection is a key requirement to guarantee the reliability of the structures and the safety of the end-users.

In the present work, culture-based and culture-independent investigations were performed to determine the microbiota structure of the coelomic fluid of Mediterranean sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus individuals collected from two distinct geographical sites neighboring a high-density population bay and a nature reserve, respectively. Next Generation Sequencing analysis of 16S rRNA gene (rDNA) showed that members of the Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Fusobacteria phyla, which have been previously reported to be commonly retrieved from marine invertebrates, dominate the overall population of microorganisms colonizing this liquid tissue, with minority bacterial genera exhibiting remarkable differences among individuals. Our results showed that there is a correlation between microbiota structure and geographical location of the echinoderm collection site, highlighting over-representation of metagenomic functions related to amino acid and bioactive peptides metabolism in specimens inhabiting the nature reserve. Finally, we also described the developmental delay and aberrations exhibited by sea urchin embryos exposed to distinct bacterial isolates, and showed that these defects rely upon hydrophilic compound(s) synthesized by the bacterial strains assayed. Altogether, our findings lay the groundwork to decipher the relationships of bacteria with sea urchins in their aquatic environment, also providing an additional layer of information to understand the biological roles of the coelomic fluid.

The present study concerns the electrical properties of epoxy-/amine-based composites filled with two types of exfoliated graphite nanoparticles, i.e. partially exfoliated graphite (pEG) and carboxylated partially exfoliated graphite (CpEG), that differ in the exfoliation degree (56% and 60%, respectively) and hence for the content of carboxylate groups. The morphological analysis reveals that both graphene-based nanoparticles are homogenously dispersed within the epoxy/amine matrix. The amount of the two fillers influences the overall electrical performance of the resulting nanocomposites. In particular, it is found that the incorporation of CpEG leads to a very low percolation threshold (EPT) in the range [0.025–0.1] wt% and a relatively high electrical conductivity (about 0.096 S/m at 1.8 wt% of loading). These results are due to the higher exfoliation degree and the presence of carboxylate groups on the edges of the nanoparticles, which are responsible for weak attractive intermolecular bonds that favour the formation of the conducting network through a sort of self-assembled structure. In order to confirm this interpretation, Tunnelling Atomic Force Microscopy (TUNA) analysis is performed. In particular, the topographic mapping of the local filler dispersion of the selected nanocomposites is carried out for supporting the DC electrical results.

In this study, the effects of three processing stages: filament extrusion, 3D printing (FDM), and hot-pressing are investigated on electrical conductivity and tensile mechanical properties of poly(lactic) acid (PLA) composites filled with 6 wt.% of multiwall carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs), graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), and combined fillers. The filaments show several decades&rsquo, higher electrical conductivity and 50&ndash, 150% higher values of tensile characteristics, compared to the 3D printed and the hot-pressed samples due to the preferential orientation of nanoparticles during filament extrusion. Similar tensile properties and slightly higher electrical conductivity are found for the hot-pressed compared to the 3D printed samples, due to the reduction of interparticle distances, and consequently, the reduced tunneling resistances in the percolated network by hot pressing. Three structural types are observed in nanocomposite filaments depending on the distribution and interactions of fillers, such as segregated network, homogeneous network, and aggregated structure. The type of structural organization of MWCNTs, GNPs, and combined fillers in the matrix polymer is found determinant for the electrical and tensile properties. The crystallinity of the 3D printed samples is higher compared to the filament and hot-pressed samples, but this structural feature has a slight effect on the electrical and tensile properties. The results help in understanding the influence of processing on the properties of the final products based on PLA composites.

It is widely accepted that the epigenome can act as the link between environmental cues, both external and internal, to the organism and phenotype by converting the environmental stimuli to phenotypic responses through changes in gene transcription outcomes. Environmental stress endured by individual organisms can also enforce epigenetic variations in offspring that had never experienced it directly, which is termed transgenerational inheritance. To date, research in the environmental epigenetics discipline has used a wide range of both model and non-model organisms to elucidate the various epigenetic mechanisms underlying the adaptive response to environmental stimuli. In this review, we discuss the advantages of the zebrafish model for studying how environmental toxicant exposures affect the regulation of epigenetic processes, especially DNA methylation, which is the best-studied epigenetic mechanism. We include several very recent studies describing the state-of-the-art knowledge on this topic in zebrafish, together with key concepts in the function of DNA methylation during vertebrate embryogenesis.

Background Data on chronic pancreatitis prevalence are scanty and usually limited to hospital-based studies. Aim Investigating chronic pancreatitis prevalence in primary care. Methods Participating primary care physicians reported the prevalence of chronic pancreatitis among their registered patients, environmental factors and disease characteristics. The data were centrally reviewed and chronic pancreatitis cases defined according to M-ANNHEIM criteria for diagnosis and severity and TIGAR-O classification for etiology. Results Twenty-three primary care physicians participated in the study. According to their judgment, 51 of 36.401 patients had chronic pancreatitis. After reviewing each patient data, 11 turned out to have definite, 5 probable, 19 borderline and 16 uncertain disease. Prevalence was 30.2/100.000 for definite cases and 44.0/100.000 for definite plus probable cases. Of the 16 patients with definite/probable diagnosis, 8 were male, with mean age of 55.6 (±16.7). Four patients had alcoholic etiology, 5 post-acute/recurrent pancreatitis, 6 were deemed to be idiopathic. Four had pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, 10 were receiving pancreatic enzymes, and six had pain. Most patients had initial stage and non-severe disease. Conclusions This is the first study investigating the prevalence of chronic pancreatitis in primary care. Results suggest that the prevalence in this context is higher than in hospital-based studies, with specific features, possibly representing an earlier disease stage.

A suitably modified resin film infusion (RFI) process was used for manufacturing carbon fiber-reinforced composites (CFRCs) impregnated with a resin containing nanocages of glycidyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (GPOSS) for enhancing flame resistance and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to contrast the electrical insulating properties of the epoxy resin. The effects of the different numbers (7, 14 and 24) of the plies on the equivalent direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) electrical conductivity were evaluated. All the manufactured panels manifest very high values in electrical conductivity. Besides, for the first time, CFRC strings were analyzed by tunneling atomic force microscopy (TUNA) technique. The electrical current maps highlight electrically conductive three-dimensional networks incorporated in the resin through the plies of the panels. The highest equivalent bulk conductivity is shown by the seven-ply panel characterized by the parallel (&sigma, //0&deg, ) in-plane conductivity of 16.19 kS/m. Electrical tests also evidence that the presence of GPOSS preserves the AC electrical stability of the panels.

Electromagnetic and thermal properties of a non-conventional polymer nanocomposite based on thermoplastic Polylactic acid (PLA, Ingeo&trade, ) filled, in different weight percentage, with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), as well as a mixture of both fillers (MWCNTs/GNPs), are analyzed. The combination of notable electrical, thermal, and electromagnetic (EM) properties of the carbon fillers, in concentrations above the percolation threshold, together with the good processability of the PLA matrix gives rise to innovative filaments for 3D printing. In particular, the shielding efficiency (SE) in the frequency range 26&ndash, 37 GHz of samples increases from 0.20 dB of unfilled PLA up to 13.4 dB for composites containing MWCNTs and GNPs, corresponding to 4% and 95% of SE, respectively. The thermal conductivity of the PLA loaded with 12 wt % of GNPs is 263% higher than that of the unfilled polymer, whereas an improvement of about 99% and 190% is detected for the PLA matrix loaded with MWCNTs and both fillers, respectively. The EM and thermal characterization is combined with a morphological investigation allowing us to correlate the dispersion states of the fillers within the polymer matrix with the observed EM and thermal properties. The EM and thermal characteristics exhibited by the nanocomposites make them suitable for packaging applications of electronic devices with electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and thermal dissipation features.

Epigenetic mechanisms operate at the interface between the environment and genome, by converting the environmental stimuli to phenotypic responses through changes in the chromatin landscape, which ultimately affects gene expression in the absence of alterations in DNA sequence. In this scenario, transgenerational inheritance occurs when epigenetic variations induced by environmental stimuli are transmitted through the germ line to succeeding generations that had never experienced those stimuli. There is an ever-growing list of reports indicating that histones are fundamental players in these processes in a variety of organisms. In this chapter, we provide a perspective on histone-driven epigenetic mechanisms, such as histone posttranslational modifications, incorporation of histone variants, and nucleosome positioning, illustrating their interwoven hierarchies of activity and highlighting their roles in the transgenerational inheritance of genomic functions.

Multiphase nanocomposites based on epoxy resin loaded with 1 wt% of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and different amounts of hydrotalcite clay (HT) are experimentally characterized in order to investigate their possible usage as temperature sensors and/or heating elements. In particular, the effects of clay content on the temperature dependence of the electrical and thermal properties of the samples are investigated. Moderate clay content (0.7% or 1% by weight) induces an improvement of the electrical and thermal conductivities, thus allowing to achieve fixed heating power levels with applied voltages lower than those required for MWCNT filled epoxy systems. The operating temperatures can be designed to be lower than that the glass transition reducing the risk of material degradation. Furthermore, the presence of clay increases the sensitivity compared to the (binary) MWCNT-based composites. The proposed multiphase nanocomposites could be used for the deicing of aircraft structural parts, in small boilers, floor pipes, and so on.

A smart coating exhibiting self-diagnostic capability is designed to meet industrial requirements in aeronautics. The coating made of epoxy-based carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been applied on industrial Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRPs) currently employed in aeronautics. The correlations between mechanical strain and electrical properties of coated CFRPs highlights the feasibility in manufacturing CFRPs having integrated high sensitivity in providing an effective real-time structural health monitoring. The reliability of the developed CFRPs, in the normal operational temperature range of aircrafts, opens new perspectives in the field of selfresponsive structures in aeronautics. Self-responsive panels can simultaneously act as sensor and structural element.

Non-covalent functionalization of Multi Wall Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) could provide a solution for preserving their electronic structure facilitating the nanocomposite process preparation. Functionalization of MWCNTs by π-stacking interaction between nanofiller and a pyrene derivative has been explored. The rheological properties of filled epoxy resins highlight very interesting benefits from this kind of functionalization. Besides its peculiar capability for preventing agglomeration in the nanofiller dispersion step, it also efficiently contributes to a decrease in the viscosity of the nanocomposites; hence contrasting one of the most relevant drawback related to the manufacturing processes of the nanocomposites at MWCNTs loading rates beyond the Electrical Percolation Threshold (EPT). Because no damage of MWCNTs occurs, sp2 hybridization of carbon atoms is preserved together with the π-electron delocalization typical of polynuclear aromatic rings. Consequently, no deterioration in the electrical properties are detected; the measured EPT values are typical of nanocomposites containing embedded unfunctionalized MWCNTs (lower than 0.28 wt%), whereas for the electrical conductivity beyond the EPT, an enhancement is observed.

Epoxy nanocomposites able to meet pressing industrial requirements in the field of structural material have been developed and characterized. Tunneling Atomic Force Microscopy (TUNA), which is able to detect ultra-low currents ranging from 80 fA to 120 pA, was used to correlate the local topography with electrical properties of tetraglycidyl methylene dianiline (TGMDA) epoxy nanocomposites at low concentration of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) ranging from 0.05% up to 2% by wt. The results show the unique capability of TUNA technique in identifying conductive pathways in CNF/resins even without modifying the morphology with usual treatments employed to create electrical contacts to the ground.

Polymer-matrix composites containing conductive nanoparticles are a potential means for achieving an appealing combination of multifunctional properties for their use as structural parts in the aerospace field. Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have been being looked forward to as the next generation of new and avant-garde aircraft structures because they are exceptionally coveted competitor materials to replace traditional metal components for lightning strike protection. In this regard, nanocomposites at low concentration of CNFs ranging from 0.05% up to 2% by wt to impart electron conduction in tetrafunctional epoxy resin have been prepared and characterized. The aim of this work concerns the use of Tunneling AFM (TUNA) as revolutionary tool able to correlate the electrical current map with the correspondent local morphology of CNF/resins. TUNA technique has proven to play a leading role in the identification of current paths and electrical interconnections, even without altering the morphology with usual treatments employed to create electrical contacts to the ground. Summing up, the good electrical performance together with the high mechanical properties due to a conductive cross-linked network of CNFs inside the resin demonstrate a charming applicative potential for the formulated nanocomposites as structural materials capable to provide a safe conductive path on the exterior skin, preventing serious damage to the aircraft.

The development of embedded sensors based on a structural thermosetting epoxy resin reinforced with 0.3 wt% of multi-walled (MW) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for real-time structural health monitoring is presented. The storage modulus of the composites is higher than 2000 MPa in a wide temperature range confirming their reliability as structural parts, especially for aeronautical applications. The piezoresistive properties are studied on specimens subjected to both tension and flexural stresses. The yield strength evaluated with the same approach adopted for metallic materials and alloys compares successfully with the information provided by the electrical characterization. Different levels of damages are revealed by the changes in the piezoresistive properties due to the morphological modifications in the conductive network of CNTs within the resin. The analysis of an empirical law is proposed for predicting the strain-dependence of the electrical and mechanical properties of material when the samples are subjected to stretch-release cycles. The average CNTs interparticle distances as function of bending is also estimated.

PLA nanocomposites for fused-deposition modeling (FDM) technique are considered. Thermal and electrical conductivity of carbon-based PLA nanocomposites are investigated looking at the different morphological characteristic of the carbon nanoparticles. In particular commercial multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene nanoplates (GNPs) are considered as filler in order to realize filament for 3D printed devices for electrical and thermal application. In this paper a filler concentration up to 12% in weight is investigated. Transient Plane Source (TPS) measurements of thermal conductivity show that better heat conduction is obtained through the incorporation in the PLA matrix of carbonaceous nanostructures with predominantly two-dimensional shape (GNPs). DC electrical measurements show that the nanocomposite filled with the predominant mono-dimensional carbon nanoparticle (i.e. CNT) exhibits lower electrical percolation threshold, whereas a greater post percolation electrical conductivity is established with the two-dimensional filler (i.e. GNP). Such characteristics are to be considered in order to make robust and cost effective 3D printed device, by preferring 1D filler or 2D filler for electrical or thermal application respectively. Moreover, multiphase nanocomposites obtained with an optimized combination of CNT and GNP nanoparticles could be exploited to realize devices for joint electrical and thermal application.

Three dimensional printing (3DP) is a technique that, assisted by a computer-aided design (CAD), allows fast, direct and accurate fabrication of composites with complex 3D features and a broad range of sizes. However, poor mechanical stability and the impossibility to print electrically conductive objects remain critical problems to be solved because of the thermoplastic polymer used with a 3D printer based on fused-deposition modeling (FDM). In the present work, in order to overcome such limitations, the use of polylactic acid (PLA) reinforced with two types of highly conductive nano-carbon fillers, i.e. multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene nanoplates (GNPs) as a novel materials for 3D printing is proposed. In particular, a morphological, rheological and electrical characterization is carried out to support their potential applicability.

The focus of this study is to design new nano-modified epoxy formulations using carbon nanofillers, such as carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers and graphene-based nanoparticles (CpEG), that reduce the moisture content and provide additional functional performance. The chemical structure of epoxy mixture, using a non-stoichiometric amount of hardener, exhibits unique properties in regard to the water sorption for which the equilibrium concentration of water (C eq) is reduced up to a maximum of 30%. This result, which is very relevant for several industrial applications (aeronautical, shipbuilding industries, wind turbine blades, etc), is due to a strong reduction of the polar groups and/or sites responsible to bond water molecules. All nanofillers are responsible of a second phase at lower glass transition temperature (Tg). Compared with other carbon nanofillers, functionalized graphene-based nanoparticles exhibit the best performance in the multifunctionality. The lowest moisture content, the high performance in the mechanical properties, the low electrical percolation threshold (EPT) have been all ascribed to particular arrangements of the functionalized graphene sheets embedded in the polymeric matrix. Exfoliation degree and edge carboxylated groups are responsible of self-assembled architectures which entrap part of the resin fraction hindering the interaction of water molecules with the polar sites of the resin, also favouring the EPT paths and the attractive/covalent interactions with the matrix.

Changes occurring during evolution in the cis-regulatory landscapes of individual members of multigene families might impart diversification in their spatiotemporal expression and function. The archetypal member of the echinoid hbox12/pmar1/micro1 family is hbox12-a, a homeobox-containing gene expressed exclusively by dorsal blastomeres, where it governs the dorsal/ventral gene regulatory network during embryogenesis of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. Here we describe the inventory of the hbox12/pmar1/micro1 genes in P. lividus, highlighting that gene copy number variation occurs across individual sea urchins of the same species. We show that the various hbox12/pmar1/micro1 genes group into three subfamilies according to their spatiotemporal expression, which ranges from broad transcription throughout development to transient expression in either the animal hemisphere or micromeres of the early embryo. Interestingly, the promoter regions of those genes showing comparable expression patterns are highly similar, while differing from those of the other subfamilies. Strikingly, phylogenetic analysis suggests that the hbox12/pmar1/micro1 genes are species-specific, exhibiting extensive divergence in their noncoding, but not in their coding, sequences across three distinct sea urchin species. In spite of this, two micromere-specific genes of P. lividus possess a TCF/LEF-binding motif in a similar position, and their transcription relies on Wnt/β-catenin signaling, similar to the pmar1 and micro1 genes, which in other sea urchin species are involved in micromere specification. Altogether, our findings suggest that the hbox12/pmar1/micro1 gene family evolved rather rapidly, generating paralogs whose cis-regulatory sequences diverged following multiple rounds of duplication from a common ancestor.

Models of human habits in smart spaces can be expressed by using a multitude of formalisms whose readability influences the possibility of being validated by human experts. In this paper we present a visual analysis pipeline that allows, starting from the sensor log of a smart space, to graphically visualize human habits. The intuition here is to apply techniques borrowed from the area of business process automation and mining on a version of the sensor log preprocessed in order to translate raw sensor measurements into human actions. The paper also presents some hints of how the proposed method can be employed to automatically extract models to be reused for ambient intelligence.
