1. A new catalog of magnetically active solar-like oscillators

Abstract

We present a new catalog of stars for which detected solar-like oscillations and magnetic activity measurements are both available from chromospheric spectroscopic observations. Our results were obtained by exploiting NASA TESS mission light curves for active stars observed within the Mount Wilson Observatory HK project and the HK survey of the Hamburg Robotic Telescope TIGRE. We analyzed the light curves for a total of 191 stars by adopting recent techniques based on Bayesian analysis and model comparison to assess the detection of a power excess originating from solar-like oscillations. We characterized the oscillations in a total of 34 targets, for which we provide estimates for the global asteroseismic parameters of $\nu_\mathrm{max}$ (the frequency of maximum oscillation power), $\Delta\nu$ (the large frequency separation), and for the amplitude of the solar-like oscillation envelope $A_\mathrm{max}$. We provide strong statistical evidence for the detection of solar-like oscillations in 15 stars of our sample, identify six further stars where a detection is likely, and 13 stars for which oscillations cannot be ruled out. The key parameters extracted in this work will be exploited for a detailed stellar modeling of the targets and to calibrate relations that connect the level of the measured magnetic activity to the suppression induced on the global oscillation amplitudes. This opens the possibility of shedding light on the interplay between magnetic fields and oscillations. Abstract

One of the goals of Space Weather studies is to achieve a better understanding of impulsive phenomena, such as Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), in order to improve our ability to forecast them and mitigate the risk to our technologically driven society. The essential part of achieving this goal is to assess the performance of forecasting models. To this end, the quality and availability of suitable data are of paramount importance. In this work, we have merged already publicly available data of CMEs from both in-situ and remote instrumentation in order to build a database of CME properties. To evaluate the accuracy of such a database and confirm the relationship between in-situ and remote observations, we have employed the drag-based model (DBM) due to its simplicity and inexpensive cost of computational resources. In this study, we have also explored the parameter space for the drag parameter and solar wind speed using a Monte Carlo approach to evaluate how well the DBM determines the propagation of CMEs for the events in the dataset. The dataset of geoeffective CMEs constructed as a result of this work provides validation of the initial hypothesis about DBM, and solar wind speed and also yields further insight into CME features like arrival time, arrival speed, lift-off time, etc. Using a data-driven approach, this procedure allows us to present a homogeneous, reliable, and robust dataset for the investigation of CME propagation. On the other hand, possible CME events are identified where DBM approximation is not valid due to model limitations and higher uncertainties in the input parameters, those events require more thorough investigation.

3. On the time lag between solar wind dynamic parameters and solar activity UV proxies

Abstract

The solar activity displays variability and periodic behaviours over a wide range of timescales, with the presence of a most prominent cycle with a mean length of 11 years. Such variability is transported within the heliosphere by solar wind, radiation and other processes, affecting the properties of the interplanetary medium. The presence of solar activity-related periodicities is well visible in different solar wind and geomagnetic indices, although with time lags with respect to the solar one, leading to hysteresis cycles. Here, we investigate the time lag behaviour between a physical proxy of the solar activity, the Ca II K index, and two solar wind parameters (speed and dynamic pressure), studying how their pairwise relative lags vary over almost five solar cycles. We find that the lag between Ca II K index and solar wind speed is not constant over the whole time interval investigated, with values ranging from 6 years to 1 year (average 3.2 years). A similar behaviour is found also for the solar wind dynamic pressure. Then, by using a Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis we obtain a 10.21-year mean periodicity for the speed and 10.30-year for the dynamic pressure. We speculate that the different periodicities of the solar wind parameters with respect to the solar 11-year cycle may be related to the overall observed temporal evolution of the time lags. Finally, by accounting for them, we obtain empirical relations that link the amplitude of the Ca II K index to the two solar wind parameters., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The Sun cubE onE (SEE) is a 12U CubeSat mission proposed for a phase A/B study to the Italian Space Agency that will investigate Gamma and X-ray fluxes and ultraviolet (UV) solar emission to support studies in Sun-Earth interaction and Space Weather from LEO. More in detail, SEE's primary goals are to measure the flares emission from soft-X to Gamma ray energy range and to monitor the solar activity in the Fraunhofer Mg II doublet at 280 nm, taking advantage of a full disk imager payload. The Gamma and X-ray fluxes will be studied with unprecedented temporal resolution and with a multi-wavelength approach thanks to the combined use of silicon photodiode and silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) -based detectors. The flare spectrum will be explored from the keV to the MeV range of energies by the same payload, and with a cadence up to 10 kHz and with single-photon detection capabilities to unveil the sources of the solar flares. The energy range covers the same bands used by GOES satellites, which are the standard bands for flare magnitude definition. At the same time SiPM detectors combined with scintillators allow to cover the non-thermal bremsstrahlung emission in the gamma energy range. Given its UV imaging capabilities, SEE will be a key space asset to support detailed studies on solar activity, especially in relation to ultraviolet radiation which strongly interacts with the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere, and in relation to space safety, included in the field of human space exploration. Abstract

Large Fabry-Perot Interferometers are used in a variety of astronomical instrumentation, including spectro-polarimeters for 4-meter class solar telescopes. In this work we comprehensively characterize the cavity of a prototype 150 mm Fabry-Perot interferometer, sporting a novel, fully symmetric design. Of note, we define a new method to properly assess the gravity effects on the interferometer's cavity when the system is used in either the vertical or horizontal configuration, both typical of solar observations. We show that the symmetric design very effectively limits the combined effects of pre-load and gravity forces to only a few nm over a 120 mm diameter illuminated surface, with gravity contributing about 2 nm peak-to-valley (0.3 nm rms) in either configuration. We confirm a variation of the tilt between the plates of the interferometer during the spectral scan, which can be mitigated with appropriate corrections to the spacing commands. Finally, we show that the dynamical response of the new system fully satisfies typical operational scenarios. We conclude that large, fully symmetric Fabry-Perot interferometers can be safely used within solar instrumentation in both, horizontal and vertical position, with the latter better suited to limiting the overall volume occupied by such an instrument., Comment: 18 pages; accepted for publication in PASP. Abstract

Synoptic full-disk solar telescope are fundamental instruments for present and future Solar Physics and Space Weather. They are typically used to study and monitor the solar activity by using high temporal cadence observations at different wavelength. The TSST (Tor vergata Synoptic Solar Telescope) is a new synoptic telescope composed of two spectral channels: an H$\alpha$ (656.3 nm) telescope and a Magneto Optical Filter (MOF)-based telescope in the Potassium (KI D1) absorption spectral line at 769.9 nm. H$\alpha$ observations are fundamental for the identification of flaring regions. The MOF-based telescope will produce line of sight magnetograms and dopplergrams of the solar photosphere, which are respectively used to study the magnetic field's geometry in active regions and dynamics of the solar atmosphere. Abstract

Solar UV variability is extremely relevant for the stratospheric ozone. It has an impact on Earth's atmospheric structure and dynamics through radiative heating and ozone photochemistry. Our goal is to study the slope of the solar UV spectrum in two UV bands important for the stratospheric ozone production. In order to investigate the solar spectral variability, we use SOLSTICE (the Solar Stellar Irradiance Comparison Experiment) data onboard Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE) satellite. Data sets used are far UV (115-180nm) and middle UV (180-310nm), as well as the Mg II index (the Bremen composite). We introduce the SOLSTICE [FUV - MUV] colour to study the solar spectral characteristics, as well as analysis of the colour versus Mg II index. To isolate the 11-year scale variation, we used the Empirical Mode decomposition (EMD) on the data sets. The [FUV - MUV] colour strongly correlates with the Mg II index. More in detail, the [FUV - MUV] colour shows a time dependent behavior when plotted versus Mg II index. To explain this dependence we hypothesize an efficiency reduction of SOLSTICE FUV irradiance using an exponential aging law., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

In recent years, ensemble modeling has been widely employed in space weather to estimate uncertainties in forecasts. We here focus on the ensemble modeling of Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) arrival times and arrival velocities using a drag-based model, which is well-suited for this purpose due to its simplicity and low computational cost. Although ensemble techniques have previously been applied to the drag-based model, it is still not clear how to best determine distributions for its input parameters, namely the drag parameter and the solar wind speed. The aim of this work is to evaluate statistical distributions for these model parameters starting from a list of past CME-ICME events. We employ LASCO coronagraph observations to measure initial CME position and speed, and in situ data to associate them with an arrival date and arrival speed. For each event we ran a statistical procedure to invert the model equations, producing parameters distributions as output. Our results indicate that the distributions employed in previous works were appropriately selected, even though they were based on restricted samples and heuristic considerations. On the other hand, possible refinements to the current method are also identified, such as the dependence of the drag parameter distribution on the CME being accelerated or decelerated by the solar wind, which deserve further investigation.

Abstract

Nutrigenomics data on the functional components of olive oil are still sparse, but rapidly increasing. Olive oil is the main source of fat and health-promoting component of the Mediterranean diet. Positive effects have been observed on genes involved in the pathobiology of most prevalent age- and lifestyle-related human conditions, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and neurodegeneration. Other effects on health-promoting genes have been identified for bioactive components of olives and olive leafs. Omics technologies are offering unique opportunities to identify nutritional and health biomarkers associated with these gene responses, the use of which in personalized and even predictive protocols of investigation, is a main breakthrough in modern medicine and nutrition. Gene regulation properties of the functional components of olive oil, such as oleic acid, biophenols and vitamin E, point to a role for these molecules as natural homeostatic and even hormetic factors with applications as prevention agents in conditions of premature and pathologic aging. Therapeutic applications can be foreseen in conditions of chronic inflammation, and particularly in cancer, which will be discussed in detail in this review paper as major clinical target of nutritional interventions with olive oil and its functional components.
