In this paper we present an approach for the translation and classification of short texts in one step. Our work lays in the tradition of Domain-Driven Word Sense Disambiguation, though a major emphasis is given to domain ontologies as the right tool for sense-tagging and topic detection of short texts which, by their nature, are known to be reluctant to statistical treatment. We claim that in a scenario where users can annotate knowledge items using different languages, domain ontologies can prove very suitable for driving the word disambiguation and topic classification tasks. In this way, two tasks are gainfully collapsed in a single one. Although this study is still in its infancy, in what follows we are able to articulate motivations, design, workflow analysis, and concrete evolutions envisioned for our tool.

In questa relazione, l’autore mette a confronto due commentari antichi, quello di Servio e quello di Donato sul libro V e IX dell’Eneide. Servio tende a sorvolare su episodi (o anche su singole parole) che potrebbero suggerire un certo grado di licenziosità in Virgilio. Per esempio, evita di soffermarsi sulla natura dell’amor fra Niso e Eurialo nel quinto libro dell’Eneide. Al contrario, Donato dà più spazio allo stesso episodio per spiegare come l’amor tra i due giovani troiani si configuri come un altro aspetto della loro pietas. In più, Donato sostiene che la natura dell’amore che unisce Eurialo e Niso non sia turpis (sensuale) ma casta (castus). In this paper, the author compares two ancient commentaries, those of Servius and Donatus on books V and IX of the Aeneid. Servius tends to pass over episodes (or even single words) that could suggest a certain degree of licentiousness in Vergil. For instance, he avoids dwelling on the nature of the amor between Nisus and Euryalus in the fifth book of the Aeneid. By contrast, Donatus devotes more space to the same episode in order to explain how the amor between the two young Trojans is in fact another facet of their pietas. Furthermore, Donatus claims that the nature of the love that unites Euryalus and Nisus is not turpis (sensual) but chaste (castus).

When modeling and implementing complex systems based on agents and artifacts, achieving semantic interoperability is not only useful, but often necessary. A commonly adopted solution to manage complex and real MASs is adopting a Model Driven methodology, which uses an ontology as the formal representation of the domain, and then exploiting some existing tool to automatically generate code for agents in the MAS, to let them interact according to the model. While this approach is satisfactorily supported when the target MAS environment is Jason, less support is provided to Jade MASs, despite Jade's large adoption for real MASs development. So, considering the great support given by the automatic code generation starting from a formal model, and the large community working on Jade MASs, in this work we present an extension of the OntologyBeanGenerator plugin for Protégé, used to generate a Java representation of an OWL ontology for Jade. We improved the OntologyBeanGenerator tool to support the modeling of exceptions, formalized at the ontology level, and of methods associated with ontology elements, to set the interface of concrete objects (artifacts) at design stage. This extension allows us to integrate in a Model Driven approach a support for the formal definition of artifacts and provide an automatic generation of Jade code/interfaces to interact with them respecting the model.

We present OntoScene, a framework aimed at understanding the semantics of visual scenes starting from the semantics of their elements and the spatial relations holding between them. OntoScene exploits ontologies for representing knowledge and Prolog for specifying the interpretation rules that domain experts may adopt, and for implementing the SceneInterpreter engine. Ontologies allow the designer to formalize the domain in a reusable way, and make the system modular and interoperable with existing multiagent systems, while Prolog provides a solid basis to define complex rules of interpretation in a way that can be affordable even for people with no background in Computational Logics. The domain selected for experimenting OntoScene is that of prehistoric rock art, which provides us with a fascinating and challenging testbed.
