Abstract

The influences of ethylene-based elastomer (EE) and the compatibilizer agent ethylene-butyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate (EBAGMA) on the thermal degradation of PLA/EE blends were evaluated by the thermal degradation kinetics and thermodynamic parameters using thermogravimetry. The presence of EE and EBAGMA synergistically improved the PLA thermal stability. The temperature of 10% of mass loss (T10%) of PLA was around 365 °C, while in the compatibilized PLA/EE blend, this property increased to 370 °C. The PLA average activation energy (Ea¯) reduced in the PLA/EE blend (from 96 kJ/mol to 78 kJ/mol), while the presence of EBAGMA in the PLA/EE blend increased the Ea¯ due to a better blend compatibilization. The solid-state thermal degradation of the PLA and PLA/EE blends was classified as a D-type degradation mechanism. In general, the addition of EE increased the thermodynamic parameters when compared to PLA and the compatibilized blend due to the increase in the collision rate between the components over the thermal decomposition.

Abstract

The $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ charmonium states, composed of $c\bar{c}$ quark pairs and known since the 1970s, are widely believed to serve as ideal probes to test quantum chromodynamics in high-energy hadronic interactions. However, there is not yet a complete understanding of the charmonium-production mechanism. Recent measurements of $J/\psi$ production as a function of event charged-particle multiplicity at the collision energies of both the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) show enhanced $J/\psi$ production yields with increasing multiplicity. One potential explanation for this type of dependence is multiparton interactions (MPI). We carry out the first measurements of self-normalized $J/\psi$ yields and the $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio at both forward and backward rapidities as a function of self-normalized charged-particle multiplicity in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. In addition, detailed {\sc pythia} studies tuned to RHIC energies were performed to investigate the MPI impacts. We find that the PHENIX data at RHIC are consistent with recent LHC measurements and can only be described by {\sc pythia} calculations that include MPI effects. The forward and backward $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio, which serves as a unique and powerful approach to study final-state effects on charmonium production, is found to be less dependent on the charged-particle multiplicity., Comment: 301 authors from 69 institutions, 8 pages, 3 figures. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review D Letters. 3. Language Understanding as a Constraint on Consensus Size in LLM Societies

Abstract

The applications of Large Language Models (LLMs) are going towards collaborative tasks where several agents interact with each other like in an LLM society. In such a setting, large groups of LLMs could reach consensus about arbitrary norms for which there is no information supporting one option over another, regulating their own behavior in a self-organized way. In human societies, the ability to reach consensus without institutions has a limit in the cognitive capacities of humans. To understand if a similar phenomenon characterizes also LLMs, we apply methods from complexity science and principles from behavioral sciences in a new approach of AI anthropology. We find that LLMs are able to reach consensus in groups and that the opinion dynamics of LLMs can be understood with a function parametrized by a majority force coefficient that determines whether consensus is possible. This majority force is stronger for models with higher language understanding capabilities and decreases for larger groups, leading to a critical group size beyond which, for a given LLM, consensus is unfeasible. This critical group size grows exponentially with the language understanding capabilities of models and for the most advanced models, it can reach an order of magnitude beyond the typical size of informal human groups.

4. A Topic-wise Exploration of the Telegram Group-verse

Abstract

Although currently one of the most popular instant messaging apps worldwide, Telegram has been largely understudied in the past years. In this paper, we aim to address this gap by presenting an analysis of publicly accessible groups covering discussions encompassing different topics, as diverse as Education, Erotic, Politics, and Cryptocurrencies. We engineer and offer an open-source tool to automate the collection of messages from Telegram groups, a non-straightforward problem. We use it to collect more than 50 million messages from 669 groups. Here, we present a first-of-its-kind, per-topic analysis, contrasting the characteristics of the messages sent on the platform from different angles -- the language, the presence of bots, the type and volume of shared media content. Our results confirm some anecdotal evidence, e.g., clues that Telegram is used to share possibly illicit content, and unveil some unexpected findings, e.g., the different sharing patterns of video and stickers in groups of different topics. While preliminary, we hope that our work paves the road for several avenues of future research on the understudied Telegram platform.

5. Quantum Algorithms for One-Sided Crossing Minimization

Abstract

We present singly-exponential quantum algorithms for the One-Sided Crossing Minimization (OSCM) problem. Given an $n$-vertex bipartite graph $G=(U,V,E\subseteq U \times V)$, a $2$-level drawing $(\pi_U,\pi_V)$ of $G$ is described by a linear ordering $\pi_U: U \leftrightarrow \{1,\dots,|U|\}$ of $U$ and linear ordering $\pi_V: V \leftrightarrow \{1,\dots,|V|\}$ of $V$. For a fixed linear ordering $\pi_U$ of $U$, the OSCM problem seeks to find a linear ordering $\pi_V$ of $V$ that yields a $2$-level drawing $(\pi_U,\pi_V)$ of $G$ with the minimum number of edge crossings. We show that OSCM can be viewed as a set problem over $V$ amenable for exact algorithms with a quantum speedup with respect to their classical counterparts. First, we exploit the quantum dynamic programming framework of Ambainis et al. [Quantum Speedups for Exponential-Time Dynamic Programming Algorithms. SODA 2019] to devise a QRAM-based algorithm that solves OSCM in $O^*(1.728^n)$ time and space. 6. Weakly Leveled Planarity with Bounded Span

Abstract

This paper studies planar drawings of graphs in which each vertex is represented as a point along a sequence of horizontal lines, called levels, and each edge is either a horizontal segment or a strictly $y$-monotone curve. A graph is $s$-span weakly leveled planar if it admits such a drawing where the edges have span at most $s$; the span of an edge is the number of levels it touches minus one. We investigate the problem of computing $s$-span weakly leveled planar drawings from both the computational and the combinatorial perspectives. We prove the problem to be para-NP-hard with respect to its natural parameter $s$ and investigate its complexity with respect to widely used structural parameters. We show the existence of a polynomial-size kernel with respect to vertex cover number and prove that the problem is FPT when parameterized by treedepth. We also present upper and lower bounds on the span for various graph classes. Notably, we show that cycle trees, a family of $2$-outerplanar graphs generalizing Halin graphs, are $\Theta(\log n)$-span weakly leveled planar and $4$-span weakly leveled planar when $3$-connected. Abstract

Not every directed acyclic graph (DAG) whose underlying undirected graph is planar admits an upward planar drawing. We are interested in pushing the notion of upward drawings beyond planarity by considering upward $k$-planar drawings of DAGs in which the edges are monotonically increasing in a common direction and every edge is crossed at most $k$ times for some integer $k \ge 1$. We show that the number of crossings per edge in a monotone drawing is in general unbounded for the class of bipartite outerplanar, cubic, or bounded pathwidth DAGs. However, it is at most two for outerpaths and it is at most quadratic in the bandwidth in general. From the computational point of view, we prove that upward-$k$-planarity testing is NP-complete already for $k =1$ and even for restricted instances for which upward planarity testing is polynomial. Abstract

We study upward pointset embeddings (UPSEs) of planar $st$-graphs. Let $G$ be a planar $st$-graph and let $S \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ be a pointset with $|S|= |V(G)|$. An UPSE of $G$ on $S$ is an upward planar straight-line drawing of $G$ that maps the vertices of $G$ to the points of $S$. We consider both the problem of testing the existence of an UPSE of $G$ on $S$ (UPSE Testing) and the problem of enumerating all UPSEs of $G$ on $S$. We prove that UPSE Testing is NP-complete even for $st$-graphs that consist of a set of directed $st$-paths sharing only $s$ and $t$. On the other hand, for $n$-vertex planar $st$-graphs whose maximum $st$-cutset has size $k$, we prove that it is possible to solve UPSE Testing in $O(n^{4k})$ time with $O(n^{3k})$ space, and to enumerate all UPSEs of $G$ on $S$ with $O(n)$ worst-case delay, using $O(k n^{4k} \log n)$ space, after $O(k n^{4k} \log n)$ set-up time. Moreover, for an $n$-vertex $st$-graph whose underlying graph is a cycle, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of an UPSE on a given poinset, which can be tested in $O(n \log n)$ time. Abstract

As the scientific community continues to push the boundaries of computing capabilities, there is a growing responsibility to address the associated energy consumption and carbon footprint. This responsibility extends to the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG), encompassing over 170 sites in 40 countries, supporting vital computing, disk, tape storage and network for LHC experiments. Ensuring efficient operational practices across these diverse sites is crucial beyond mere performance metrics. This paper introduces the HEP Benchmark suite, an enhanced suite designed to measure computing resource performance uniformly across all WLCG sites, using HEPScore23 as performance unit. The suite expands beyond assessing only the execution speed via HEPScore23. In fact the suite incorporates metrics such as machine load, memory usage, memory swap, and notably, power consumption. Its adaptability and user-friendly interface enable comprehensive acquisition of system-related data alongside benchmarking. Throughout 2023, this tool underwent rigorous testing across numerous WLCG sites. The focus was on studying compute job slot performance and correlating these with fabric metrics. Initial analysis unveiled the tool's efficacy in establishing a standardized model for compute resource utilization while pinpointing anomalies, often stemming from site misconfigurations. This paper aims to elucidate the tool's functionality and present the results obtained from extensive testing. 10. Phase diagram of a generalized Stephanov model for finite-density QCD

Abstract

We solve a random matrix model for QCD at finite chemical potential, obtained by generalizing the Stephanov model by modifying the random-matrix integration measure with a one-parameter trace deformation. This allows one to check how important the integration measure is for the qualitative features of random matrix models, as well as to test the robustness and universality of the qualitative picture of the original model. While for a small trace deformation the phase diagram is identical to that of the Stephanov model, for a large deformation an exotic phase with spontaneous charge-conjugation breaking appears., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Certain linear matrix operators arise naturally in systems analysis and design problems involving cascade interconnections of linear time-invariant systems, including problems of stabilization, estimation, and model order reduction. We conduct here a comprehensive study of these operators and their relevant system-theoretic properties. The general theory is then leveraged to delineate both known and new design methodologies for control, estimation, and model reduction. Several entirely new designs arise from this systematic categorization, including new recursive and low-gain design frameworks for observation of cascaded systems. The benefits of the results beyond the linear time-invariant setting are demonstrated through preliminary extensions for nonlinear systems, with an outlook towards the development of a similarly comprehensive nonlinear theory., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, submitted for publication

Abstract

If the conclusion of a data analysis is sensitive to dropping very few data points, that conclusion might hinge on the particular data at hand rather than representing a more broadly applicable truth. How could we check whether this sensitivity holds? One idea is to consider every small subset of data, drop it from the dataset, and re-run our analysis. But running MCMC to approximate a Bayesian posterior is already very expensive; running multiple times is prohibitive, and the number of re-runs needed here is combinatorially large. Recent work proposes a fast and accurate approximation to find the worst-case dropped data subset, but that work was developed for problems based on estimating equations -- and does not directly handle Bayesian posterior approximations using MCMC. We make two principal contributions in the present work. We adapt the existing data-dropping approximation to estimators computed via MCMC. Observing that Monte Carlo errors induce variability in the approximation, we use a variant of the bootstrap to quantify this uncertainty. We demonstrate how to use our approximation in practice to determine whether there is non-robustness in a problem. Empirically, our method is accurate in simple models, such as linear regression. Abstract

Close-proximity exploration of small celestial bodies is crucial for the comprehensive and accurate characterization of their properties. However, the complex and uncertain dynamical environment around them contributes to a rapid dispersion of uncertainty and the emergence of non-Gaussian distributions. Therefore, to ensure safe operations, a precise understanding of uncertainty propagation becomes imperative. In this work, the dynamical environment is analyzed around two asteroids, Apophis, which will perform a close flyby to Earth in 2029, and Eros, which has been already explored by past missions. The performance of different uncertainty propagation methods (Linear Covariance Propagation, Unscented Transformation, and Polynomial Chaos Expansion) are compared in various scenarios of close-proximity operations around the two asteroids. Findings are discussed in terms of propagation accuracy and computational efficiency depending on the dynamical environment. By exploring these methodologies, this work contributes to the broader goal of ensuring the safety and effectiveness of spacecraft operations during close-proximity exploration of small celestial bodies.

Abstract

Bluesky is a Twitter-like decentralized social media platform that has recently grown in popularity. After an invite-only period, it opened to the public worldwide on February 6th, 2024. In this paper, we provide a longitudinal analysis of user activity in the two months around the opening, studying changes in the general characteristics of the platform due to the rapid growth of the user base. We observe a broad distribution of activity similar to more established platforms, but a higher volume of original than reshared content, and very low toxicity. After opening to the public, Bluesky experienced a large surge in new users and activity, especially posting English and Japanese content. In particular, several accounts entered the discussion with suspicious behavior, like following many accounts and sharing content from low-credibility news outlets. Abstract

Radiofrequency harvesting using ambient wireless energy could be used to reduce the carbon footprint of electronic devices. However, ambient radiofrequency energy is weak (less than -20 dBm), and thermodynamic limits and high-frequency parasitic impedance restrict the performance of state-of-the-art radiofrequency rectifiers. Nanoscale spin rectifiers based on magnetic tunnel junctions have recently demonstrated high sensitivity, but suffer from a low a.c.-to-d.c. conversion efficiency (less than 1%). Here, we report a sensitive spin rectifier rectenna that can harvest ambient radiofrequency signals between -62 and -20 dBm. We also develop an on-chip co-planar waveguide-based spin rectifier array with a large zero-bias sensitivity (around 34,500 mV/mW) and high efficiency (7.81%). Self-parametric excitation driven by voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy is a key mechanism that contributes to the performance of the spin-rectifier array. We show that these spin rectifiers can wirelessly power a sensor at a radiofrequency power of -27 dBm.

17. SepAl: Sepsis Alerts On Low Power Wearables With Digital Biomarkers and On-Device Tiny Machine Learning

Abstract

Sepsis is a lethal syndrome of organ dysfunction that is triggered by an infection and claims 11 million lives per year globally. Prognostic algorithms based on deep learning have shown promise in detecting the onset of sepsis hours before the actual event but use a large number of bio-markers, including vital signs and laboratory tests. The latter makes the deployment of such systems outside hospitals or in resource-limited environments extremely challenging. This paper introduces SepAl, an energy-efficient and lightweight neural network, using only data from low-power wearable sensors, such as photoplethysmography (PPG), inertial measurement units (IMU), and body temperature sensors, designed to deliver alerts in real-time. SepAl leverages only six digitally acquirable vital signs and tiny machine learning algorithms, enabling on-device real-time sepsis prediction. SepAl uses a lightweight temporal convolution neural network capable of providing sepsis alerts with a median predicted time to sepsis of 9.8 hours. The model has been fully quantized, being able to be deployed on any low-power processors, and evaluated on an ARM Cortex-M33 core. Experimental evaluations show an inference efficiency of 0.11MAC/Cycle and a latency of 143ms, with an energy per inference of 2.68mJ. This work aims at paving the way toward accurate disease prediction, deployable in a long-lasting multi-vital sign wearable device, suitable for providing sepsis onset alerts at the point of care. 18. i-CardiAx: Wearable IoT-Driven System for Early Sepsis Detection Through Long-Term Vital Sign Monitoring

Abstract

Sepsis is a significant cause of early mortality, high healthcare costs, and disability-adjusted life years. Digital interventions like continuous cardiac monitoring can help detect early warning signs and facilitate effective interventions. This paper introduces i-CardiAx, a wearable sensor utilizing low-power high-sensitivity accelerometers to measure vital signs crucial for cardiovascular health: heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and respiratory rate (RR). Data collected from 10 healthy subjects using the i-CardiAx chest patch were used to develop and evaluate lightweight vital sign measurement algorithms. The algorithms demonstrated high performance: RR (-0.11 $\pm$ 0.77 breaths\min), HR (0.82 $\pm$ 2.85 beats\min), and systolic BP (-0.08 $\pm$ 6.245 mmHg). These algorithms are embedded in an ARM Cortex-M33 processor with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) support, achieving inference times of 4.2 ms for HR and RR, and 8.5 ms for BP. Additionally, a multi-channel quantized Temporal Convolutional Neural (TCN) Network, trained on the open-source HiRID dataset, was developed to detect sepsis onset using digitally acquired vital signs from i-CardiAx. The quantized TCN, deployed on i-CardiAx, predicted sepsis with a median time of 8.2 hours and an energy per inference of 1.29 mJ. The i-CardiAx wearable boasts a sleep power of 0.152 mW and an average power consumption of 0.77 mW, enabling a 100 mAh battery to last approximately two weeks (432 hours) with continuous monitoring of HR, BP, and RR at 30 measurements per hour and running inference every 30 minutes. In conclusion, i-CardiAx offers an energy-efficient, high-sensitivity method for long-term cardiovascular monitoring, providing predictive alerts for sepsis and other life-threatening events.

19. Quantum Algorithm for Testing Graph Completeness

Abstract

Testing graph completeness is a critical problem in computer science and network theory. Leveraging quantum computation, we present an efficient algorithm using the Szegedy quantum walk and quantum phase estimation (QPE). Our algorithm, which takes the number of nodes and the adjacency matrix as input, constructs a quantum walk operator and applies QPE to estimate its eigenvalues. These eigenvalues reveal the graph's structural properties, enabling us to determine its completeness. We establish a relationship between the number of nodes in a complete graph and the number of marked nodes, optimizing the success probability and running time. Abstract

We present a measurement of $|V_{ub}|$ from a simultaneous study of the charmless semileptonic decays $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$ and $B^+\to\rho^0 \ell^+\nu_{\ell}$, where $\ell = e, \mu$. This measurement uses a data sample of 387 million $B\overline{B}$ meson pairs recorded by the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider between 2019 and 2022. The two decays are reconstructed without identifying the partner $B$ mesons. We simultaneously measure the differential branching fractions of $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$ and $B^+\to\rho^0 \ell^+\nu_{\ell}$ decays as functions of $q^2$ (momentum transfer squared). From these, we obtain total branching fractions $B(B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}) = (1.516 \pm 0.042 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.059 (\mathrm{syst})) \times 10^{-4}$ and $B(B^+\to\rho^0 \ell^+\nu_{\ell}) = (1.625 \pm 0.079 (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.180 (\mathrm{syst})) \times 10^{-4}$. By fitting the measured $B^0\to\pi^- \ell^+ \nu_{\ell}$ partial branching fractions as functions of $q^2$, together with constraints on the non-perturbative hadronic contribution from lattice QCD calculations, we obtain $|V_{ub}|$ = $(3.93 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.19) \times 10^{-3}$. Here, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is theoretical.

Abstract

IEEE 802.11 networks continuously adapt to meet the stringent requirements of emerging applications like cloud gaming, eXtended Reality (XR), and video streaming services, which require high throughput, low latency, and high reliability. To address these challenges, Coordinated Spatial Reuse (C-SR) can potentially contribute to optimizing spectrum resource utilization. This mechanism is expected to enable a higher number of simultaneous transmissions, thereby boosting spectral efficiency in dense environments and increasing the overall network performance. In this paper, we focus on the performance analysis of C-SR in Wi-Fi 8 networks. In particular, we consider an implementation of C-SR where channel access and inter-Access Point (AP) communication are performed over-the-air using the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF). For such a purpose, we leverage the well-known Bianchi's throughput model and extend it to support multi-AP transmissions via C-SR. Numerical results in a WLAN network that consists of four APs show C-SR throughput gains ranging from 54% to 280% depending on the inter-AP distance and the position of the stations in the area.

Abstract

Tuning the parameters and prompts for improving AI-based text-to-image generation has remained a substantial yet unaddressed challenge. Hence we introduce GreenStableYolo, which improves the parameters and prompts for Stable Diffusion to both reduce GPU inference time and increase image generation quality using NSGA-II and Yolo. Our experiments show that despite a relatively slight trade-off (18%) in image quality compared to StableYolo (which only considers image quality), GreenStableYolo achieves a substantial reduction in inference time (266% less) and a 526% higher hypervolume, thereby advancing the state-of-the-art for text-to-image generation., Comment: This paper is published in the SSBSE Challenge Track 2024

Abstract

Prophet inequalities are a central object of study in optimal stopping theory. In the iid model, a gambler sees values in an online fashion, sampled independently from a given distribution. Upon observing each value, the gambler either accepts it as a reward or irrevocably rejects it and proceeds to observe the next value. The goal of the gambler, who cannot see the future, is maximising the expected value of the reward while competing against the expectation of a prophet (the offline maximum). In other words, one seeks to maximise the gambler-to-prophet ratio of the expectations. This model has been studied with infinite, finite and unknown number of values. When the gambler faces a random number of values, the model is said to have random horizon. We consider the model in which the gambler is given a priori knowledge of the horizon's distribution. Alijani et al. (2020) designed a single-threshold algorithms achieving a ratio of $1/2$ when the random horizon has an increasing hazard rate and is independent of the values. We prove that with a single-threshold, a ratio of $1/2$ is actually achievable for several larger classes of horizon distributions, with the largest being known as the $\mathcal{G}$ class in reliability theory. Moreover, we extend this result to its dual, the $\overline{\mathcal{G}}$ class (which includes the decreasing hazard rate class), and to low-variance horizons. Finally, we construct the first example of a family of horizons, for which multiple thresholds are necessary to achieve a nonzero ratio. We establish that the Secretary Problem optimal stopping rule provides one such algorithm, paving the way towards the study of the model beyond single-threshold algorithms., Comment: 54 pages, 2 figures

24. The effective diffusion constant of stochastic processes with spatially periodic noise

Abstract

We discuss the effective diffusion constant $D_{{\it eff}}$ for stochastic processes with spatially-dependent noise. Starting from a stochastic process given by a Langevin equation, different drift-diffusion equations can be derived depending on the choice of the discretization rule $ 0 \leq \alpha \leq 1$. We initially study the case of periodic heterogeneous diffusion without drift and we determine a general result for the effective diffusion coefficient $D_{{\it eff}}$, which is valid for any value of $\alpha$. We study the case of periodic sinusoidal diffusion in detail and we find a relationship with Legendre functions. Then, we derive $D_{{\it eff}}$ for general $\alpha$ in the case of diffusion with periodic spatial noise and in the presence of a drift term, generalizing the Lifson-Jackson theorem. Our results are illustrated by analytical and numerical calculations on generic periodic choices for drift and diffusion terms.

Abstract

The 30 year orbit of the Cepheid Polaris has been followed with observations by the CHARA Array (Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy) from 2016 through 2021. An additional measurement has been made with speckle interferometry at the Apache Point Observatory. Detection of the companion is complicated by its comparative faintness--an extreme flux ratio. Angular diameter measurements appear to show some variation with pulsation phase. Astrometric positions of the companion were measured with a custom grid-based model-fitting procedure and confirmed with the CANDID software. These positions were combined with the extensive radial velocities discussed by Torres (2023) to fit an orbit. Because of the imbalance of the sizes of the astrometry and radial velocity datasets, several methods of weighting are discussed. The resulting mass of the Cepheid is 5.13$\pm$ 0.28 $M_\odot$. Because of the comparatively large eccentricity of the orbit (0.63), the mass derived is sensitive to the value found for the eccentricity. The mass combined with the distance shows that the Cepheid is more luminous than predicted for this mass from evolutionary tracks. The identification of surface spots is discussed. This would give credence to the identification of photometric variation with a period of approximately 120 days as a rotation period. Polaris has some unusual properties (rapid period change, a phase jump, variable amplitude, unusual polarization). However, a pulsation scenario involving pulsation mode, orbital periastron passage (Torres 2023), and low pulsation amplitude can explain these characteristics within the framework of pulsation seen in Cepheids., Comment: ApJ in press

Abstract

We report measurements of time-dependent $CP$ asymmetries in $B^0 \to K^0_S \pi^0 \gamma$ decays based on a data sample of $(388\pm6)\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle II detector. The Belle II experiment operates at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure decay-time distributions to determine $CP$-violating parameters $S$ and $C$. We determine these parameters for two ranges of $K^0_S \pi^0$ invariant mass: $m(K^0_S \pi^0)\in (0.8, 1.0)$ $GeV/c^2$, which is dominated by $B^0 \to K^{*0} (\to K^0_S \pi^0) \gamma$ decays, and a complementary region $m(K^0_S \pi^0)\in (0.6, 0.8)\cup(1.0, 1.8)$ $GeV/c^2$. Abstract

Affective computing has recently gained popularity, especially in the field of human-computer interaction systems, where effectively evoking and detecting emotions is of paramount importance to enhance users experience. However, several issues are hindering progress in the field. In fact, the complexity of emotions makes it difficult to understand their triggers and control their elicitation. Additionally, effective emotion recognition requires analyzing multiple sensor data, such as facial expressions and physiological signals. These factors combined make it hard to collect high-quality datasets that can be used for research purposes (e.g., development of emotion recognition algorithms). Despite these challenges, Virtual Reality (VR) holds promise as a solution. By providing a controlled and immersive environment, VR enables the replication of real-world emotional experiences and facilitates the tracking of signals indicative of emotional states. However, controlling emotion elicitation remains a challenging task also within VR. This research paper introduces the Magic Xroom, a VR platform designed to enhance control over emotion elicitation by leveraging the theory of flow. This theory establishes a mapping between an individuals skill levels, task difficulty, and perceived emotions. In the Magic Xroom, the users skill level is continuously assessed, and task difficulty is adjusted accordingly to evoke specific emotions. Furthermore, user signals are collected using sensors, and virtual panels are utilized to determine the ground truth emotional states, making the Magic Xroom an ideal platform for collecting extensive datasets. Abstract

We present measurements of $B^{+}\rightarrow\rho^{+}\gamma$ and $B^{0}\rightarrow\rho^{0}\gamma$ decays using a combined data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and $387\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at the $\Upsilon (4S)$ resonance. After an optimized selection, a simultaneous fit to the Belle and Belle II data sets yields $114\pm 12$ $B^{+}\rightarrow\rho^{+}\gamma$ and $99\pm 12$ $B^{0}\rightarrow\rho^{0}\gamma$ decays. The measured branching fractions are $(13.1^{+2.0 +1.3}_{-1.9 -1.2})\times 10^{-7}$ and $(7.5\pm 1.3^{+1.0}_{-0.8})\times 10^{-7}$ for $B^{+}\rightarrow\rho^{+}\gamma$ and $B^{0}\rightarrow\rho^{0}\gamma$ decays, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also measure the isospin asymmetry $A_{\rm I}(B\rightarrow\rho\gamma)=(10.9^{+11.2 +7.8}_{-11.7 -7.3})\%$ and the direct CP asymmetry $A_{CP}(B^{+}\rightarrow\rho^{+}\gamma)=(-8.2\pm 15.2^{+1.6}_{-1.2})\%$., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Extended Reality (XR) has stringent throughput and delay requirements that are hard to meet with current wireless technologies. Missing these requirements can lead to worsened picture quality, perceived lag between user input and corresponding output, and even dizziness for the end user. In this paper, we study the capability of upcoming Wi-Fi 7, and its novel support for Multi-Link Operation (MLO), to cope with these tight requirements. Our study is based on simulation results extracted from an MLO-compliant simulator that realistically reproduces VR traffic. Results show that MLO can sustain VR applications. By jointly using multiple links with independent channel access procedures, MLO can reduce the overall delay, which is especially useful in the uplink, as it has more stringent requirements than the downlink, and is instrumental in delivering the expected performance. We show that using MLO can allow more users per network than an equivalent number of links using SLO. We also show that while maintaining the same overall bandwidth, a higher number of MLO links with narrow channels leads to lower delays than a lower number of links with wider channels.

Abstract

We present a search for the baryon number $B$ and lepton number $L$ violating decays $\tau^- \rightarrow \Lambda \pi^-$ and $\tau^- \rightarrow \bar{\Lambda} \pi^-$ produced from the $e^+e^-\to \tau^+\tau^-$ process, using a 364 fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected by the Belle~II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. No evidence of signal is found in either decay mode, which have $|\Delta(B-L)|$ equal to $2$ and $0$, respectively. Upper limits at 90\% credibility level on the branching fractions of $\tau^- \rightarrow \Lambda\pi^-$ and $\tau^- \rightarrow \bar{\Lambda}\pi^-$ are determined to be $4.7 \times 10^{-8}$ and $4.3 \times 10^{-8}$, respectively., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Context: There are currently three pulsars firmly detected by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs), two of them reaching TeV energies, challenging models of very-high-energy (VHE) emission in pulsars. More precise observations are needed to better characterize pulsar emission at these energies. The LST-1 is the prototype of the Large-Sized Telescope, that will be part of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). Its improved performance over previous IACTs makes it well suited for studying pulsars. Aims: To study the Crab pulsar emission with the LST-1, improving and complementing the results from other telescopes. These observations can also be used to characterize the potential of the LST-1 to study other pulsars and detect new ones. Methods: We analyzed a total of $\sim$103 hours of gamma-ray observations of the Crab pulsar conducted with the LST-1 in the period from September 2020 to January 2023. The observations were carried out at zenith angles less than 50 degrees. A new analysis of the Fermi-LAT data was also performed, including $\sim$14 years of observations. Results: The Crab pulsar phaseogram, long-term light-curve, and phase-resolved spectra are reconstructed with the LST-1 from 20 GeV to 450 GeV for P1 and up to 700 GeV for P2. The pulsed emission is detected with a significance of 15.2$\sigma$. The two characteristic emission peaks of the Crab pulsar are clearly detected (>10$\sigma$), as well as the so-called bridge emission (5.7$\sigma$). We find that both peaks are well described by power laws, with spectral indices of $\sim$3.44 and $\sim$3.03 respectively. The joint analysis of Fermi-LAT and LST-1 data shows a good agreement between both instruments in the overlapping energy range. Abstract

We define a mathematical notion of complex adaptive system by following the original intuition of G.K. Zipf about the principle of least effort, an intuitive idea which is nowadays informally widespread in complex systems modeling. We call generalized evolution principle this mathematical notion of interaction spaces theory. Formalizing and generalizing Mandelbrot's ideas, we also prove that a large class of these systems satisfy a power law. We finally illustrate the notion of complex adaptive system with theorems describing a Von Th\"unen-like model. The latter can be easily generalized to other complex systems and describes the appearance of emergent patterns. Every notion is introduced both using an intuitive description with lots of examples, and using a modern mathematical language.

Abstract

We present the first steps of interaction spaces theory, a universal mathematical theory of complex systems which is able to embed cellular automata, agent based models, master equation based models, stochastic or deterministic, continuous or discrete dynamical systems, networked dynamical models, artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms in a single notion. Therefore, interaction spaces represent a common mathematical language that can be used to describe several complex systems modeling frameworks. This is the first step to start a mathematical theory of complex systems. Every notion is introduced both using an intuitive description by listing lots of examples, and using a modern mathematical language.

Abstract

A series of data samples was collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider from March 2019 to June 2022. We determine the integrated luminosities of these data samples using three distinct methodologies involving Bhabha ($e^+e^- \to e^+e^-(n\gamma)$), digamma ($e^+e^- \to \gamma\gamma(n\gamma)$), and dimuon ($e^+e^- \to \mu^+ \mu^- (n\gamma)$) events. The total integrated luminosity obtained with Bhabha, digamma, and dimuon events is (426.52 $\pm$ 0.03 $\pm$ 2.48)~fb$^{-1}$, (427.32 $\pm$ 0.03 $\pm$ 2.56)~fb$^{-1}$, and (424.84 $\pm$ 0.04 $\pm$ 3.88)~fb$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The resulting total integrated luminosity obtained from the combination of the three methods is (426.88 $\pm$ 1.93)~fb$^{-1}$., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

35. An Examination of Suspension & Expulsion in Community Childcare Centers Two Years into the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Suspension and expulsion have been documented concerns in childcare centers throughout the United States for nearly 20 years. This study examined suspension and expulsion practices in community childcare centers two years into the COVID-19 pandemic (May 2022). Survey data from 131 administrators of community childcare programs were analyzed. It was found that at least 67 individual children were reported expelled across 131 programs, a rate similar to pre-pandemic rates and higher than rates at the height of the pandemic. For suspension, 136 individual children were suspended from early learning programs during this time; a rate almost double pre-pandemic levels. Factors (availability of support, prior suspensions, suggesting the program is not a match, reported turnover, waiting lists, enrollment capacity, administrator reported stress, and teacher perceived stress) were examined to determine if they predicted expulsion. None of these factors significantly predicted expulsion. These results and their limitations and implications are discussed.

Abstract

Background: Autologous tissues such as buccal mucosa (BM) are widely used for reconstruction of urethral strictures; however, limitations such as donor site morbidity and scarce tissue supply require the development of alternative biomaterials for urethral repair. The goals of this study were to determine the safety and efficacy of bi-layer silk fibroin (BLSF) matrices for urethral stricture repair and compare histological and functional outcomes to the standard approach, BM urethroplasty under good laboratory practices.Material and methods: A total of 13 rabbits exhibiting urethral stricture formation following electrocoagulation injury were treated with onlay urethroplasty with either acellular BLSF (N = 7) or autologous BM (N = 6) grafts for 3 months. Uninjured control rabbits were maintained in parallel (N = 4).Results and conclusion: Animals receiving BLSF implants were demonstrated to be functionally equivalent to BM grafts in their ability to restored strictured calibers, support micturition and promote tissue regeneration with minimal inflammation.

37. Existence of attracting periodic orbits in 3-dimensional strongly 2-cooperative systems

Abstract

The flow of a $k$-cooperative system maps the set of vectors with up to~$(k-1)$ sign variations to itself. In particular, $1$-cooperative systems are just cooperative systems. Strongly $2$-cooperative systems satisfy a strong \Poincare-Bendixson property: any bounded solution that evolves in a compact set containing no equilibria converges to a periodic orbit. For $3$-dimensional strongly $2$-cooperative nonlinear systems, we provide a sufficient condition that guarantees the existence of an invariant compact set in the state space that includes an attracting periodic orbit. We show that our theoretical results unify and generalize known results on the existence of a periodic solution in two well-known models in biochemistry, a 3D Goodwin oscillator model and the 3D Field-Noyes ordinary-differential-equation (ODE) model for the Belousov-Zhabotinskii reaction, while simplifying the proofs.

38. Multi-UAVs end-to-end Distributed Trajectory Generation over Point Cloud Data

Abstract

This paper introduces an end-to-end trajectory planning algorithm tailored for multi-UAV systems that generates collision-free trajectories in environments populated with both static and dynamic obstacles, leveraging point cloud data. Our approach consists of a 2-fork neural network fed with sensing and localization data, able to communicate intermediate learned features among the agents. One network branch crafts an initial collision-free trajectory estimate, while the other devises a neural collision constraint for subsequent optimization, ensuring trajectory continuity and adherence to physicalactuation limits. Extensive simulations in challenging cluttered environments, involving up to 25 robots and 25% obstacle density, show a collision avoidance success rate in the range of 100 -- 85%. Finally, we introduce a saliency map computation method acting on the point cloud data, offering qualitative insights into our methodology.

Abstract

The variability of helium abundance in the solar corona and the solar wind is an important signature of solar activity, solar cycle, solar wind sources, as well as coronal heating processes. Motivated by recently reported remote sensing UV imaging observations by Helium Resonance Scattering in the Corona and Heliosphere (HERSCHEL) payload sounding rocket of helium abundance in inner corona on 14-Sep-2009 near solar minimum, we present the results of the first three-dimensional three-fluid (electrons, protons, alpha particles) model of tilted coronal streamer belt and slow solar wind that illustrate the various processes leading to helium abundance differentiation and variability. We find good qualitative agreement between the three-fluid model and the coronal helium abundances variability reported from UV observations of streamers, providing insight on the effects of the physical processes, such as heating, gravitational settling and inter-species Coulomb friction in the out-flowing solar wind that produce the observed features. Abstract

Despite their success, Large-Language Models (LLMs) still face criticism as their lack of interpretability limits their controllability and reliability. Traditional post-hoc interpretation methods, based on attention and gradient-based analysis, offer limited insight into the model's decision-making processes. In the image field, Concept-based models have emerged as explainable-by-design architectures, employing human-interpretable features as intermediate representations. However, these methods have not been yet adapted to textual data, mainly because they require expensive concept annotations, which are impractical for real-world text data. This paper addresses this challenge by proposing a self-supervised Interpretable Concept Embedding Models (ICEMs). We leverage the generalization abilities of LLMs to predict the concepts labels in a self-supervised way, while we deliver the final predictions with an interpretable function. The results of our experiments show that ICEMs can be trained in a self-supervised way achieving similar performance to fully supervised concept-based models and end-to-end black-box ones. Additionally, we show that our models are (i) interpretable, offering meaningful logical explanations for their predictions; (ii) interactable, allowing humans to modify intermediate predictions through concept interventions; and (iii) controllable, guiding the LLMs' decoding process to follow a required decision-making path.

Abstract

We introduce and analyze generalised polynomial chaos (gPC), considering both intrusive and non-intrusive approaches, as an uncertainty quantification method in studies of probabilistic robustness. The considered gPC methods are complementary to Monte Carlo (MC) methods and are shown to be fast and scalable, allowing for comprehensive and efficient exploration of parameter spaces. These properties enable robustness analysis of a wider set of models, compared to computationally expensive MC methods, while retaining desired levels of accuracy. We discuss the application of gPC methods to systems in biology and neuroscience, notably subject to multiple parametric uncertainties, and we examine a well-known model of neural dynamics as a case study.

Abstract

The photoacoustic effect in liquids, generated by metal nanoparticles excited with short laser pulses, offers high contrast imaging and promising medical treatment techniques. Understanding the role of the thermal boundary resistance (TBR) and the laser pulse duration in the generation mechanism of acoustic waves is essential to implement efficient photoacoustic nanotransducers. This work theoretically investigates, for the paradigmatic case of water-immersed gold nanocylinders, the role of the TBR and of laser pulse duration in the competition between the launching mechanisms: the thermophone and the mechanophone. In the thermophone, the nanoparticle acts as a nanoheater and the wave is launched by water thermal expansion. In the mechanophone, the nanoparticle directly acts as a nanopiston. Specifically, for a gold-water interface, the thermophone prevails under ns light pulse irradiation, while the mechanophone dominates shortening the pulse to the 10 ps regime. For a graphene-functionalized gold-water interface, instead, the mechanophone dominates over the entire range of explored laser pulse durations. Results point to high-TBR, liquid-immersed nanoparticles as potentially efficient photoacoustic nanogenerators, with the advantage of keeping the liquid environment temperature unaltered., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results better quantify how the yield of low-$p_T$ associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects., Comment: 534 authors from 83 institutions, 12 pages, 7 figures. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. Abstract

We report on the development of a sub-kelvin, single-crystal silicon Fabry-Perot cavity. Operating such a cavity below 1~K should reduce the thermal noise limit of the cavity, and by this way address the current limitations of ultrastable lasers. To further decrease mechanical losses, mirrors with silicon substrates and crystalline coatings are optically contacted to the spacer, resulting in a room-temperature finesse of 220,000. To operate our cavity at sub-kelvin temperatures, we use a dilution refrigerator able to reach temperatures down to 10 mK. We have designed a mechanical mount to house our cavity in such a cryostat, with optimized heat transfer that will decrease the cooldown time for temperatures below 1~K. The estimated thermal noise is projected to be $\sim 7{\times}10^{-19}$ at 100~mK. However, silicon cavities with crystalline mirror coatings at cryogenic temperatures have shown birefringence correlated frequency fluctuations as well as unknown additional noise mechanisms \cite{yu2023, kedar2023}. We have measured a room-temperature TEM$_{00}$ birefringent mode splitting of about 250 kHz. Abstract

The computational power and fault-tolerance of future large-scale quantum processors derive in large part from the connectivity between the qubits. One approach to increase connectivity is to engineer qubit-qubit interactions at a distance. Alternatively, the connectivity can be increased by physically displacing the qubits. This has been explored in trapped-ion experiments and using neutral atoms trapped with optical tweezers. For semiconductor spin qubits, several studies have investigated spin coherent shuttling of individual electrons, but high-fidelity transport over extended distances remains to be demonstrated. Here we report shuttling of an electron inside an isotopically purified Si/SiGe heterostructure using electric gate potentials. First, we form static quantum dots, and study how spin coherence decays as we repeatedly move a single electron between up to five dots. Next, we create a traveling wave potential to transport an electron in a moving quantum dot. This second method shows substantially better spin coherence than the first. It allows us to displace an electron over an effective distance of 10 {\mu}m in under 200 ns with an average fidelity of 99%. These results will guide future efforts to realize large-scale semiconductor quantum processors, making use of electron shuttling both within and between qubit arrays., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

The Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV), a proposed consequence of certain quantum gravity (QG) scenarios, could instigate an energy-dependent group velocity for ultra-relativistic particles. This energy dependence, although suppressed by the massive QG energy scale $E_\mathrm{QG}$, expected to be on the level of the Planck energy $1.22 \times 10^{19}$ GeV, is potentially detectable in astrophysical observations. In this scenario, the cosmological distances traversed by photons act as an amplifier for this effect. By leveraging the observation of a remarkable flare from the blazar Mrk\,421, recorded at energies above 100 GeV by the MAGIC telescopes on the night of April 25 to 26, 2014, we look for time delays scaling linearly and quadratically with the photon energies. Using for the first time in LIV studies a binned-likelihood approach we set constraints on the QG energy scale. For the linear scenario, we set $95\%$ lower limits $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.7\times10^{17}$ GeV for the subluminal case and $E_\mathrm{QG}> 3.6 \times10^{17}$ GeV for the superluminal case. For the quadratic scenario, the $95\%$ lower limits for the subluminal and superluminal cases are $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.6 \times10^{10}$ GeV and $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.5\times10^{10}$ GeV, respectively.

Abstract

We present measurements of the branching fractions of eight $\overline B{}^0\to D^{(*)+} K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$, $B^{-}\to D^{(*)0} K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$ decay channels. The results are based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance collected with the Belle II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $362~\text{fb}^{-1}$. The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ meson energy, and are efficiency-corrected as a function of $m(K^-K^{(*)0}_{(S)})$ and $m(D^{(*)}K^{(*)0}_{(S)})$ in order to avoid dependence on the decay model. These results include the first observation of $\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0$, $B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0$, and $\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of the other channels compared to previous measurements. The helicity-angle distributions and the invariant mass distributions of the $K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$ systems are compatible with quasi-two-body decays via a resonant transition with spin-parity $J^P=1^-$ for the $K^-K_S^0$ systems and $J^P= 1^+$ for the $K^-K^{*0}$ systems. Abstract

Today's distributed and pervasive computing addresses large-scale cyber-physical ecosystems, characterised by dense and large networks of devices capable of computation, communication and interaction with the environment and people. While most research focusses on treating these systems as "composites" (i.e., heterogeneous functional complexes), recent developments in fields such as self-organising systems and swarm robotics have opened up a complementary perspective: treating systems as "collectives" (i.e., uniform, collaborative, and self-organising groups of entities). Abstract

We present a study of $\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\pi^{0}$, $\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\eta$, and $\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\eta^{\prime}$ decays using the Belle and Belle~II data samples, which have integrated luminosities of 980~$\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ and 426~$\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, respectively. We measure the following relative branching fractions $${\cal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\pi^{0})/{\cal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{-}\pi^{+}) = 0.48 \pm 0.02 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.03 ({\rm syst}) ,$$ $${\cal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\eta)/{\cal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{-}\pi^{+}) = 0.11 \pm 0.01 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.01 ({\rm syst}) ,$$ $${\cal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\eta^{\prime})/{\cal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{-}\pi^{+}) = 0.08 \pm 0.02 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.01 ({\rm syst}) $$ for the first time, where the uncertainties are statistical ($\rm stat$) and systematic ($\rm syst$). By multiplying by the branching fraction of the normalization mode, ${\mathcal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{-}\pi^{+})$, we obtain the following absolute branching fraction results $(6.9 \pm 0.3 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.5 ({\rm syst}) \pm 1.3 ({\rm norm})) \times 10^{-3}$, $(1.6 \pm 0.2 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.2 ({\rm syst}) \pm 0.3 ({\rm norm})) \times 10^{-3}$, and $(1.2 \pm 0.3 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.1 ({\rm syst}) \pm 0.2 ({\rm norm})) \times 10^{-3}$, for $\Xi_{c}^{0}$ decays to $\Xi^{0}\pi^{0}$, $\Xi^{0}\eta$, and $\Xi^{0}\eta^{\prime}$ final states, respectively. The third errors are from the uncertainty on ${\mathcal B}(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{-}\pi^{+})$. The asymmetry parameter for $\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\pi^{0}$ is measured to be $\alpha(\Xi_{c}^{0}\to\Xi^{0}\pi^{0}) = -0.90\pm0.15({\rm stat})\pm0.23({\rm syst})$., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures
