This study was designed to examine the relationship between associative clustering, creative potential, and the slope of associative hierarchies. It was predicted that people whose verbal associations are organized into neatly separated clusters will have lower creative potentials as measured by the Remote Associates Test (RAT) and steeper slopes for their associative hierarchies. Thirteen hypotheses were set forth, of which six were supported. However, close examination of the data by complex analysis of variance and posteriori comparisons raised serious question about the interpretability of the findings. Expectations about differential performances on an important subset of RAT items by people with neatly separated clusters vs. people with overlapping clusters were not supported. This may have been due either to errors in conceptualization or flaws in the classification of RAT items. However, the measure of associative clustering again proved highly reliable within persons and deserves further attention. (Author/DD)

Background Investigations of age effects on youth anxiety outcomes in randomized trials (RCTs) of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) have failed to yield a clear result due to inadequate statistical power and methodologic weaknesses. We conducted an individual patient data metaanalysis to address this gap. Question Does age moderate CBT effect size, measured by a clinically and statistically significant interaction between age and CBT exposure? Methods All English language RCTs of CBT for anxiety in 6-19 year olds were identified using systematic review methods. Investigators of eligible trials were invited to submit their individual patient data. The anxiety disorder interview schedule (ADIS) primary diagnosis severity score was the primary outcome. Age effects were investigated using multilevel modeling to account for study level data clustering and random effects. Results Data from 17 of 23 eligible trials were obtained (74%); 16 studies and 1,171 (78%) cases were available for the analysis. No interaction between age and CBT exposure was found in a model containing age, sex, ADIS baseline severity score, and comorbid depression diagnosis (power ≥ 80%). Sensitivity analyses, including modeling age as both a categorical and continuous variable, revealed this result was robust. Conclusions Adolescents who receive CBT in efficacy research studies show benefits comparable to younger children. However, CBT protocol modifications routinely carried out by expert trial therapists may explain these findings. Adolescent CBT protocols are needed to facilitate the transportability of efficacy research effects to usual care settings where therapists may have less opportunity for CBT training and expertise development. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

rZIP is an approx. 32 kDa, multi-domain protein of Dictyostelium discoideum whose structural motifs include a RING (zinc-binding) domain, a leucine zipper, a glutamine repeat, an SH3-binding region and a consensus phosphorylation site for MAP kinase. In vitro, rZIP forms homodimers and interacts specifically with the SH3 domain(s) of the Nck adaptor protein. rZIP is expressed maximally during cell differentiation at approximately equivalent levels in all cells. Disruption of the rZIP gene rzpA results in altered cellular aggregation, impaired slug migration, and aberrant patterning of prespore and prestalk cells, the major progenitor classes. In rzpA− strains, presporespecific genes are overexpressed and prestalk expression zones are reduced. Conversely, constitutive overexpression of rzpA markedly decreases prespore-specific gene expression and significantly increases the expression of prestalk-specific genes. Further, induced transdifferentiation of prespore cells into prestalk cells is inhibited in rzpA− slugs. In light of these patterning defects, we suggest that the RING/zipper protein rZIP plays an important role in early cell fate decisions in Dictyostelium, acting as a positive regulator of prestalk differentiation and an inhibitor of prespore differentiation.

Sepsis is a common cause of death, but outcomes in individual patients are difficult to predict. Elucidating the molecular processes that differ between sepsis patients who survive and those who die may permit more appropriate treatments to be deployed. We examined the clinical features, and the plasma metabolome and proteome of patients with and without community-acquired sepsis, upon their arrival at hospital emergency departments and 24 hours later. The metabolomes and proteomes of patients at hospital admittance who would die differed markedly from those who would survive. The different profiles of proteins and metabolites clustered into fatty acid transport and β-oxidation, gluconeogenesis and the citric acid cycle. They differed consistently among several sets of patients, and diverged more as death approached. In contrast, the metabolomes and proteomes of surviving patients with mild sepsis did not differ from survivors with severe sepsis or septic shock. An algorithm derived from clinical features together with measurements of seven metabolites predicted patient survival. This algorithm may help to guide the treatment of individual patients with sepsis.
