In this program description, the authors explain how a doctoral-level embedded service-learning opportunity, part of Project PURPLE (Preparing Urban and Rural Personnel as Leaders in Education), a collaborative personnel preparation training program, taught future faculty to meet the needs of urban and rural schools in high-need settings. The collaboration between two large institutions in the U.S. same state offered scholars a unique opportunity to engage in teaching, research, and service across institutions. For the service-learning project, teams of cross-institution scholars partnered with consultants from a regional special education cooperative that provides technical assistance to a large rural geographical area. Eleven scholars completed seven diverse service projects, ranging from training education professionals to engaging caregivers. This description discusses these projects, along with the benefits to the scholars and the regional cooperative. It also explores implications for practice for future personnel preparation collaborations and possible avenues for future research.

For students with disabilities in rural locations, there can be unique barriers related to postsecondary transition. Reverse Career Fairs (RCFs), wherein employers take the role of attendees and students with disabilities focus on showcasing their skills and talents, are one way to provide U.S. students with experiences that support evidence-based predictors of post-school outcomes. An option for navigating these barriers is described through a framework used to foster postsecondary transitions for students with disabilities in rural settings through the implementation of RCFs. RCFs provide inclusive postsecondary opportunities by restructuring traditional approaches to career exploration and promoting meaningful connections between students with disabilities and prospective employers. A framework identifying key role groups and phases in facilitating an RCF and pilot results of one Special Education Regional Technical Assistance Center are provided.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has transformative potential to support the education of students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities (M/SID) and their teachers. Although research and evidence-based practices (EBPs) are integral to fostering positive student learning outcomes, educators face challenges in effectively implementing these strategies. In this article, we discuss how higher education faculty can prepare educators to harness the use of AI as a powerful tool to support the implementation of EBPs in the classroom, addressing teacher fluency and maintenance of application.

A shortage of certified teacher candidates nationwide is especially challenging in the field of special education. U.S. rural school districts are even more impacted due to limited access to universities because of geographical distance. In this program description, we look at the University Louisville's fully online special education alternative teacher preparation (ATP) program in moderate to severe disabilities, which was developed to lessen the teacher shortage and meet the needs of teacher candidates in school districts in Kentucky. Both the program mentoring structure and course information are provided. Feedback regarding ATP candidates' perceptions of the mentoring support they received are shared based on school setting (rural or urban) as well as data highlighting the growing increase in enrollment since adapting to an online format. Limitations of the current program and future directions are described.

The needs of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students with moderate or severe intellectual disability (ID) are quite unique and complex. CLD students with moderate or severe ID face many of the same issues as their non-disabled CLD peers; however, due to the nature of their disability this may lead to even less access to the general curriculum, appropriate services, materials, and meaningful collaboration between families and educators. The purpose of this article is to provide a culturally responsive framework for facilitating academic instruction for CLD students with moderate or severe ID that also includes appropriate supports in an effort to increase access to postsecondary outcomes for this population. Suggestions for accessing the general curriculum and a discussion about increasing parental involvement and accessing appropriate adult agencies to further enhance these outcomes are provided.
