[ES] El propósito de la presente tesis es desarrollar una herramienta informática para la predicción del efecto multipactor tanto en líneas de transmisión coaxiales como en guías circulares. Esta herramienta está pensada para ser complementaria de las de diseño asistido por ordenador Computer-Aided Design (CAD) en el caso de dispositivos de comunicaciones a implementar en estas tecnologías de ondas guiadas. En el caso de guías coaxiales, se desarrollará un modelo numérico para la predicción de los umbrales de potencia del fenómeno de multipactor. Este método ha sido validado con medidas experimentales, así como validado con otros estudios teóricos realizados. En este tipo de guía se ha considerado tres tipos de señal de radio frecuencia (RF), la onda incidente, la onda estacionaria pura y las ondas estacionarias en general (combinación de ondas incidente y reflejada de distintas amplitudes). Así pues, se ha analizado y obtenido los umbrales de potencia para cada una de las diferentes señales consideradas y observado los efectos que se producen. En las guías circulares, se ha demostrado en primer lugar la existencia del fenómeno de multipactor bajo la excitación del modo fundamental de la guía circular TE11. El interés en estas guías se debe al amplio uso en la fabricación de componentes pasivos, tanto en cavidades resonantes como el uso de irises que conectan las cavidades, empleados tanto en aceleradores de partículas como en diferentes subsistemas de comunicaciones en satélites. Por tanto, además de observar la existencia del efecto multipactor hemos calculado una carta de susceptibilidad para dicho fenómeno, inicialmente en el caso de que sólo se transmita una única polarización, en concreto la polarización vertical. Una vez hemos demostrado que el efecto multipactor es posible en estas guías circulares, se ha realizado un estudio teniendo en consideración la coexistencia de las dos polarizaciones del modo fundamental TE11. L'interés en aquestes guies es deu a l'ampli ús en la fabricació de components passius, tant en cavitats ressonants com l'ús d'irises que connecten les cavitats, emprats tant en acceleradors de partícules com en diferents subsistemes de comunicacions en satèllits. Per tant, a més d'observar l'existència de l'efecte multipactor hem calculat una carta de susceptibilitat per a aquest fenomen, inicialment en el cas que només es transmeta una única polarització, en concret la polarització vertical. Per a una millor comprensió del fenomen, s'ha analitzat inicialment per a ordres de multipactor m, [EN] The main goal of this PhD thesis is to develop a computer tool for the prediction of the multipactor effect, both in coaxial transmission lines and in circular guides. This tool is intended to be complementary to the available Computer-Aided Design (CAD) versions, in particular for the case of communication devices to be implemented in the cited guided wave technologies. In the case of coaxial guides, a numerical model is developed to predict the power thresholds of the multipactor phenomenon. This method has been validated with experimental measurements, as well as with other theoretical studies carried out. In this type of guide, three types of radio frequency (RF) signals have been considered, i.e. the incident wave, the pure standing wave and the standing waves in general (a combination of incident and reflected waves of different amplitudes). Thus, the power thresholds for each of the different signals considered have been analyzed and obtained, and the corresponding effects that occur have been observed. In circular guides, the existence of the multipactor phenomenon under the excitation of the TE11 fundamental mode of the circular guide has been demonstrated first. The interest in these guides is due to their wide use in the manufacture of passive components, both in resonant cavities and within irises that connect the cavities, used both in particle accelerators and in different satellite communications subsystems. Therefore, in addition to observing the existence of the multipactor effect, we have calculated a susceptibility chart for this phenomenon, initially in the case that only a single polarization is transmitted, specifically the vertical polarization. Once we have shown that the multipactor effect is possible in these circular guides, a study has been carried out taking into account the co-existence of the two polarizations of the TE11 fundamental mode. [EN] This paper reports on the experimental measurement of power threshold levels for the multipactor effect between samples of ferrite material typically used in the practical implementation of L-and S-band circulators and isolators. For this purposes, a new family of wideband, nonreciprocal rectangular waveguide structures loaded with ferrites has been designed with a full-wave electromagnetic simulation tool. The design also includes the required magnetostatic field biasing circuits. The multipactor breakdown power levels have also been predicted with an accurate electron tracking code using measured values for the secondary electron yield (SEY) coefficient. The measured results agree well with simulations, thereby fully validating the experimental campaign.

Switching fromthe classical single carrier approach to the more realisticmulticarrier scenario is very challenging from the experimental point of view. Themulticarrier signals, amplifiedby several RF power amplifiers, need to have controlled phase, amplitude, and frequency in each carrier. Fine tuning of the signal generator phases is required in order to compensate the phase drift occurring in the active elements of the test bed. This paper presents an efficient and low-cost technique to generate multicarrier signals, valid for testing vacuum breakdown phenomena in satellite components.

[EN] The dispersion diagram of infinite periodic structures is useful for the practical design of waveguide filters. Starting from the dispersion diagram of a unit cell, it is possible to generate a finite structure with very similar pass- and stop-bands (gaps). However, truncation of the infinite periodic structure degrades the pass-band performance. In this paper, these impairments are overcome by means of suitable waveguide tapers matching the impedance of the periodic structure to the access ports. As a result, the design of practical low-pass filters, derived from passive structures based on Electromagnetic Band-Gap (EBG) waveguides periodically loaded with metal ridges, is successfully addressed. According to this procedure, a five-order and an eight-order EBG low-pass filters are obtained after an optimization step. Measurements of a manufactured prototype fully validate the proposed approach.

In this paper, the multipactor RF breakdown in a parallel-plate waveguide partially filled with a ferrite slab magnetized normal to the metallic plates is studied. An external magnetic field is applied along the vertical direction between the plates in order to magnetize the ferrite. Numerical simulations using an in-house 3-D code are carried out to obtain the multipactor RF voltage threshold in this kind of structures. The presented results show that the multipactor RF voltage threshold at certain frequencies becomes considerably lower than for the corresponding classical metallic parallel-plate waveguide with the same vacuum gap

The aim of this paper is the study of the RF multipactor breakdown in coaxial transmission lines excited by a single carrier with a digitally modulated signal. Employing an in-house developed code, numerical simulations are performed to determine the RF multipactor voltage threshold for several digitally modulated signals under different modulations schemes: quadrature phase-shift keying, 16-quadrature amplitude modulation, 16-amplitude and phase-shift keying, and 32-amplitude and phase-shift keying. Moreover, a coarse method based on the envelope integration to determine the RF multipactor voltage threshold when involving arbitrary digital modulations is also presented. These results are also compared with the 20-gap-crossing rule used in the space standard document ECSS-E20-1A. In order to validate the theoretical results, a test campaign was performed for realistic modulated signals, finding good agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental data.

In this work, a full-wave tool for the accurate analysis and design of compensated E-plane multiport junctions is proposed. The implemented tool is capable of evaluating the undesired effects related to the use of low-cost manufacturing techniques, which are mostly due to the introduction of rounded corners in the cross section of the rectangular waveguides of the device. The obtained results show that, although stringent mechanical effects are imposed, it is possible to compensate for the impact of the cited low-cost manufacturing techniques by redesigning the matching elements considered in the original device. Several new designs concerning a great variety of E-plane components (such as right-angled bends, T-junctions and magic-Ts) are presented, and useful design guidelines are provided. The implemented tool, which is mainly based on the boundary integral-resonant mode expansion technique, has been successfully validated by comparing the obtained results to simulated data provided by a commercial software based on the finite element method.

The variation of the multipactor RF voltage thresholdwiththe ON interval length of the pulse has been analyzed. To reach this aim, an in-house multipactor simulation code based on the Monte-Carlo algorithm has been implemented. The numerical simulations show that the multipactor RF voltage threshold increases as the ON pulse interval diminishes. In addition, an experiment was carried out to validate the proposed theoretical model, and demonstrating the excellent agreement between the theory and the experimental data. Finally, the results are compared with the 20-gap-crossing rule used in the space standard document (ECSS-E20-1A).

A novel technique for the full-wave analysis of 3-D complex waveguide devices is presented. This new formulation, based on the Boundary Integral-Resonant Mode Expansion (BI-RME) method, allows the rigorous full-wave electromagnetic characterization of 3-D arbitrarily shaped metallic structures making use of extremely low CPU resources (both time and memory). The unknown electric current density on the surface of the metallic elements is represented by means of Rao-Wilton-Glisson basis functions, and an algebraic procedure based on a singular value decomposition is applied to transform such functions into the classical solenoidal and nonsolenoidal basis functions needed by the original BI-RME technique. The developed tool also provides an accurate computation of the electromagnetic fields at an arbitrary observation point of the considered device, so it can be used for predicting high-power breakdown phenomena. In order to validate the accuracy and efficiency of this novel approach, several new designs of band-pass waveguides filters are presented. The obtained results (S-parameters and electromagnetic fields) are successfully compared both to experimental data and to numerical simulations provided by a commercial software based on the finite element technique. The results obtained show that the new technique is specially suitable for the efficient full-wave analysis of complex waveguide devices considering an integrated coaxial excitation, where the coaxial probes may be in contact with the metallic insets of the component.

In this paper, a new systematic technique to design manifold-coupled multiplexers in waveguide technology is proposed. The new technique uses generalized low-order electromagnetic (EM) distributed models, which constitute a half-way point between the fast, but imprecise, analytical models, and the more accurate, but costly, full-wave EM models. The method can be applied to contiguous and noncontiguous channel multiplexers, in both E-plane or H-plane configurations. This paper covers the complete design procedure for manifold multiplexers, starting from the required specifications and finishing with the physical dimensions. After explaining the general design technique for multiplexers with channel filters based on transmission-line resonators, the method is specialized for the design of classic multiplexers with circular-waveguide dual-mode filters. As a further application example, the same methodology is also used for the design of a nonconventional tuningless wideband multiplexer with a new type of rectangular waveguide filters. This paper is concluded with a comparison between simulation and measurements for the wideband multiplexer. Excellent agreement between measurements and simulations are demonstrated, thereby validating the complete design procedure.

[EN] A very flexible and efficient computer-aided design (CAD) tool, specifically suited for advanced comb-line rectangular waveguide filters, is presented in this work. The developed software tool, which makes use of a full-wave analysis technique based on the Boundary Integral-Resonant Mode Expansion method, allows loading the considered comb-line resonators with any number of radially symmetrical partial-height metallic posts. The implemented CAD tool also allows dealing with coupling windows of arbitrary cross-section, thus drastically enhancing the flexibility of the CAD process. The excitation of the analyzed components, which is performed using generalized coaxial probes, has also been integrated in the implemented software tool, thus achieving a full-wave electromagnetic characterization of the whole component. Furthermore, a novel simple procedure to efficiently connect all the obtained wide-band matrices is proposed. To validate the accuracy and efficiency of this novel CAD tool, several new designs concerning advanced band-pass comb-line waveguide filters are presented. The accuracy of the developed CAD tool has been successfully validated by comparing the obtained results with numerical data provided by a commercial tool based on the finite-element method. For such a purpose, a software tool based on the perturbation of the boundary conditions on the waveguide metallic walls and on the boundary integral resonant mode expansion method has been developed. To show the advantages of the proposed technique with respect to the classic power-loss method, the complex propagation wavenumbers of a double ridge and an elliptical waveguide have been first computed and compared with results of a commercial software based on the finite element technique. Next a circular, a sectorial shaped and a triangular shaped waveguide have been considered. Then, a computer-aided design software package based on this modal analysis tool has been applied to predict the propagation loss effects in complex waveguide structures, such as an evanescent mode ridge waveguide filter, a traditional dual mode filter with circular cavities and a twist component for K-band applications.

This work presents a new theoretical framework and prediction tool for multipactor in multi-carrier systems. This is of capital importance for satellite communication applications, which demand for higher number of channels operating at high power levels. Such a tool may help to reduce, or completely avoid, the risk of having an RF breakdown in operation, with the subsequent loss of signal quality or even completely damage of the device. Currently not much is known about multipactor for multi-carrier signals. This Thesis throws light on some basic multipactor mechanisms such as the electronic discharge build-up or its connection with signal distortion. A new non-stationary multi-carrier theory, based on current statistical multipactor studies, is presented. Unlike existing ones, this theory is able, for the first time, to model both electron creation and absorption processes. It constitutes the first multipactor theory for multi-carrier signals which is able to fully characterize the electron dynamics, such as the time evolution of the electronic density, as well as creation and absorption rates. A prediction method, the quasi-stationary method, is proposed for the automatic searching of the combination of carrier phases which yields the lowest breakdown level. It is based on the non-stationary theory for singlecarrier signals together with a genetic global optimizer. The quasi-stationary prediction method returns the worst-case phase combination plus a breakdown level for arbitrary multi-carrier signals with any number of carriers. The quasi-statinary method has been assessed with experimental tests on ad-hoc Ku-band rectangular waveguide samples with different multi-carrier signals. Additionally, the results have been contrasted with the popular 20-gap-crossing rule. The quasi-stationary method yields much better prediction accuracy than the 20-gap-crossing rule. The main aim of this paper is the analysis of the feasibility of employing permanent magnets for the multipactor mitigation in a coaxial waveguide. First, the study of a coaxial line immersed in a uniform axial magnetic field shows that multipactor can be suppressed at any RF if the external magnetic field is strong enough. Both theoretical simulations and experimental tests validate this statement. Next, multipactor breakdown of a coaxial line immersed in a hollow cylindrical permanent magnet is analyzed. Numerical simulations show that multipactor can be suppressed in a certain RF range. The performed experimental test campaign demonstrates the capability of the magnet to avoid the multipactor electron multiplication process.

The aim of this paper is the analysis of the multipactor effect in a parallel-plate waveguide when a ferrite slab, transversally magnetized by a static magnetic field parallel to the waveguide walls, is present. Employing an in-house developed code, numerical simulations are performed to predict the multipactor radio frequency voltage threshold in such a ferrite-loaded waveguide. Variations of the ferrite magnetization field strength and the ferrite slab height are analyzed. Effective electron trajectories are also shown for a better understanding of the breakdown phenomenon, finding different multipactor regimes.

Circular waveguides, either employed as resonant cavities or as irises connecting adjacent guides, are widely present in many passive components used in different applications (i.e., particle accelerators and satellite subsystems). In this paper, we present the study of the multipactor effect in circular waveguides considering the coexistence of the two polarizations of the fundamental TE11 circular waveguide mode. For a better understanding of the problem, only low multipactor orders have been explored as a function of the polarization ellipse eccentricity. Special attention has been paid to the linear and circular polarizations, but other more general configurations have also been explored.

A very efficient technique for the full-wave analysis and design of complex passive waveguide filters, including rectangular cavities with metallic cylindrical posts and coaxial excitation, is presented. This novel technique provides the wideband generalized admittance matrix representation of the whole structure in the form of pole expansions, thus extracting the most expensive computations from the frequency loop. For this purpose, the structure is properly segmented into its key building blocks, all of them characterized in terms of wideband admittance matrices. Then, an efficient iterative algorithm for combining these matrices, and finally providing the wideband generalized admittance matrix of the complete structure, is followed. In order to validate the accuracy and efficiency of this full-wave modal technique, four different waveguide filters have been considered. In particular, the design of a compact four-pole in-line filter with tuning screws and of an evanescent-mode filter, both operating in the X-band and including a standard (vertical) coaxial excitation, are first presented. Finally, two C-band six-resonator comb-line filters, one of them with a cross-coupling configuration, and both excited with a collinear end-launcher transition based on a disc-ended coaxial, are also designed. Numerical data from a commercial software, as well as measurements of a manufactured prototype, are included for verification purposes.

For this purpose, the well-known boundary integral-resonant mode expansion (BI RME) method has been properly extended. Circular waveguides are used for resonant mode expansion, whereas the arbitrary contour is defined by any combination of straight, circular and elliptical segments, thus allowing the exact representation of the most widely used geometries. The proposed algorithm extends previous implementations of the BI RME method based on circular waveguides by considering circular and elliptical arcs for defining arbitrary geometries. Similarly, it allows the efficient analysis of passive devices based on circular waveguides with arbitrary perturbations, thus providing more accurate results with less computational efforts than a rectangular waveguide-based BI RME approach. The extended method has been successfully tested with several practical application examples, having compared its performance with the BI RME method based on rectangular waveguides.

El efecto multipactor de ruptura en RF ha sido objeto de numerosos estudios desde hace más de 80 años, a partir del desarrollo de los primeros aceleradores de partículas en la primera mitad del siglo XX. A mediados de ese siglo, con el desarrollo de fuentes de alta potencia para aplicaciones radar y la llegada de los satélites artificiales, la investigación del multipactor cobró una considerable relevancia, al convertirse este fenómeno en un riesgo determinante para costosos proyectos comerciales. Las guías de onda con secciones rectas canónicas, como las rectangulares o las coaxiales, han sido tradicionalmente las más utilizadas en dispositivos de microondas. Sus principales ventajas son que sus campos electromagnéticos pueden resolverse analíticamente, lo que permite su aplicación directa en diseños complejos, y la simplicidad de su fabricación. Pero las capacidades de computación y las prestaciones de los algoritmos se han multiplicado con los años, lo que ha permitido ampliar el espectro de posibles topologías a geometrías casi arbitrarias, ofreciendo al diseñador una mayor libertad creativa. En todo caso, gran parte de los dispositivos de microondas actuales siguen confiando en la madurez y fiabilidad de las tecnologías de guía de onda tradicionales, que no requieren una inversión adicional en equipos de fabricación. La supresión del efecto multipactor es la motivación para arriesgarse a probar topologías de guía de onda innovadoras, como la guía en forma de cuña. Es en este contexto donde este trabajo de doctorado pretende ofrecer una contribuci'on. En primer lugar, se ha desarrollado un modelo numérico para predecir el efecto multipactor de ruptura en guías de onda huecas en forma de cuña. Esta herramienta ha permitido la identificación de criterios óptimos de diseño. Así mismo, se ha adaptado un método de síntesis de filtros paso-banda en guía rectangular para poder realizar un diseño similar pero basado en la nueva topología. Como culminación, las estructur, The multipactor RF breakdown effect has been object of numerous studies for over 80 years, since the development of the first particle accelerators in the beginning of the 20th century. Around the middle of that century, with the development of high power sources for radar applications and with the emergence of the artificial satellites, a new impulse was given to the multipactor research, since it became a risk for expensive commercial projects. Traditionally, waveguides with canonical cross sections, like rectangular or coaxial ones, have been the building blocks of most microwave devices. Their main advantages are that their electromagnetic fields can be solved analytically, enabling their direct application in complex designs, as well as their manufacturing simplicity. But over the years the computation capabilities and algorithms have continuously evolved, which has broadened the spectrum of possible topologies to almost arbitrary geometries, offering the designer more room for creativity. However, most of the current microwave devices still trust on the mature canonical waveguide technologies, which do not require an additional investment in manufacturing equipment. The suppression of the multipactor effect is the motivation for considering an innovative waveguide topology, like the wedge-shaped waveguide. It is within this context where this PhD work aims to offer a contribution. On the one hand, a numerical model for predicting the multipactor breakdown effect in wedge-shaped hollow waveguides has been developed. This tool has aided in the derivation of optimised design criteria. On the other hand, a bandpass filter synthesis method for rectangular waveguide has been adapted in order to calculate a similar design based on the new topology. As a culmination, the designed structures have been manufactured and tested, in order to verify their electromagnetic performance and their multipactor sensibility. A patent was also filed to protect these new filters. In

The main aim of this paper is the analysis of the multipactor effect within a coaxial waveguide structure excited by a phase-shift keying single-carrier digital modulated signal. To reach this aim, we developed in-house a software code which is able to predict the RF multipactor input voltage threshold. This code is based on the single effective electron model, and considers the space charge effect. Numerical simulations are performed for binary phase-shift keying and quadrature phase-shift keying modulated signals. In addition, an experiment is carried out to validate the proposed theoretical model. We have demonstrated that the digital modulation of the single-carrier signal may modify the RF voltage threshold in comparison to the nonmodulated scenario. Good agreement between theory and experimental data is found.

[EN] Wedge-shaped waveguides present a certain advantage with respect to rectangular waveguides regarding their resistance to multipactor discharges. In this paper, the optimal configuration for the wedge geometry is investigated based on theoretical results, on a precise multipactor prediction tool, and on previous experience. In addition, design rules are presented, which allow us to achieve for wedge-shaped filters electrical performances comparable to the ones of rectangular waveguide filters, while at the same time improving the multipactor-free power range. As a proof of concept, two three-pole bandpass filters with equivalent electrical characteristic of 150-MHz bandwidth, centered at 12 GHz (Ku band), and the same Q factor have been designed, manufactured, and tested. The first design is based on conventional rectangular waveguide technology, while the second one has non-parallel broadside walls (wedge-shaped cross section). The multipactor power threshold and RF performance of the filters have been measured in order to validate the improvements achievable employing wedge-shaped resonators.

This new algorithm assumes a quasi-stationary (QS) model based on the nonstationary theory for single-carrier signals. It determines the worst case, i.e., the combination of signal phases that yields the lowest breakdown level per carrier, using multipactor electron growth models. It considers the secondary emission yield properties of the material and the time-varying value of the multicarrier signal envelope. Several test samples have been designed and manufactured in order to assess the precision of the proposed method. The experimental results show excellent agreement with the predicted results. The QS prediction technique yields, in general, better accuracy and more relaxed breakdown levels than the existing methods.

Multipactor effect is a resonant avalanche of secondary electrons induced by an RF electromagnetic field, which endangers high-power payloads on satellites and particle accelerator structures. The main goal of this letter is to present a multimodal network characterization of a multipactor discharge occurring in a bounded waveguide region. This will allow to perform a rigorous analysis of a complete passive component considering the presence of a discharge. In order to verify the present formulation, we have measured the power spectrum generated by a multipactor event excited in a simple microwave circuit based on rectangular waveguides, which has been compared with the theoretical results, obtaining good agreement.

The main goal of this letter is the analysis of the multipactor effect within a coaxial waveguide structure when an external axial dc magnetic field is applied. We have designed and manufactured a coaxial waveguide sample that has been immersed within a long solenoid. Numerical and experimental results confirm a significant change in the RF breakdown behavior with regard to the case without the axial dc magnetic field, as well as the existence of single- and double-surface multipactor regimes. Good agreement between theory and experimental data has been found.

A novel full-wave method for the modal characterization of dielectric electromagnetic band-gap structures under oblique plane wave excitation is presented, showing the dielectric lattice periodicity in both the longitudinal and the transverse propagation directions. In this method, an eigenvalue problem is obtained in terms of the generalized ABCD matrix of the periodic cell, whose solution provides not only the propagation constant of the fundamental Floquet mode, but also of the higher order modes of the global periodic structure. The proposed analysis technique has been successfully validated with a commercial software based on the frequency domain finite elementmethod. The transmittance of a finite periodic material with a finite number of unit cells has also been successfully verified through comparisons with other theoretical results reported in the technical literature. Then, our new algorithm has been used to study band-gap materials made of rectangular dielectric parallel rods, investigating the variation of the dispersion diagram and the transmission and reflection transfer functions when modifying both geometrical and electrical parameters of this structure. Finally, the response differences when a periodical defect is considered in a finite periodic arrangement have also been highlighted.

A technique for the accurate computation of the time domain electromagnetic fields radiated by a charged distribution traveling along an arbitrarily shaped waveguide region is presented. Based on the transformation (by means of the standard Fourier analysis) of the time-varying current density of the analyzed problem to the frequency domain, the resulting equivalent current is further convolved with the dyadic electric and magnetic Green's functions. Moreover, we show that only the evaluation of the transverse magnetic modes of the structure is required for the calculation of fields radiated by particles traveling in the axial direction. Finally, frequency domain electric and magnetic fields are transformed back to the time domain, just obtaining the total fields radiated by the charged distribution. Furthermore, we present a method for the computation of the wakefields of arbitrary cross-section uniform waveguides from the resulting field expressions. Several examples of charged particles moving in the axial direction of such waveguides are included.

In this paper, we propose a systematic procedure for the accurate design of classical dual-mode filters in circular waveguide technology. The design procedure is based on the previous synthesis of an intermediate distributed model, which links the standard lumped (or coupling matrix) elements circuit with the practical waveguide realization. We then show how the equivalent distributed model can be directly used to obtain the physical dimensions of these filter components (typically rectangular and cross-shaped irises, as well as tuning and coupling screws). The value of this paper lies in the fact that the proposed design strategy provides the final dimensions of these complex structures with unprecedented levels of accuracy and numerical efficiency, as it is shown through two dual-mode filter designs for narrowband applications, and measurements of a manufactured prototype. © 2012 IEEE.

First, multipactor susceptibility charts for several types of ridged waveguides have been computed using the commercial software FEST3D. Next, these charts have been used to predict multipactor threshold values for a bandpass filter and a quasi-low-pass filter both containing ridge waveguide sections. Furthermore, multipactor simulations using FEST3D are carried out to calculate the multipactor threshold of the aforementioned structures. A good agreement between predictions and simulations has been found for both filter examples.

This article aims at the industry interest on automated design tools that are able to take into account manufacturing effects. First, an efficient design strategy for bandpass waveguide filters including the rounded corners arising from low-cost manufacturing procedures is presented. This technique is based on a recent enhanced prototype and synthesis methodology able to consider the real structure parts. Using the resulting electromagnetic (EM)-based synthesis technique, an excellent structure is extracted, which requires, at most, only a slight final EM optimization. Second, this article presents analytical expressions providing error estimates for the different filter performances in terms of manufacturing tolerances. From such expressions, designers can determine the tolerance to be requested for a tuning-less implementation. Moreover, they can also be used to set the convergence criterion for the synthesis procedure. A fully automated design tool of bandpass waveguide filters able to consider manufacturing impairments has been developed and integrated in the commercial software Full-wave EM Simulation Tool 3D (FEST 3D)

The efficient design of broadband turnstile junctions compensated with piled-up cylindrical metallic posts is discussed in this contribution. Very high relative bandwidths can be obtained, while maintaining the diameter of the input circular access port lower than the width of the rectangular waveguide ports, thus reducing the number of excited higher order circular waveguide modes. A novel full-wave analysis tool has also been implemented in order to reduce the CPU effort related to the complete design process.

This work presents a new theory of multipactor under multicarrier signals for parallel-plate geometries, assuming a homogeneous electric field and one-dimensional electron motion. It is the generalization of the nonstationary multipactor theory for single-carrier signals [S. Anza,Phys. Plasmas 17, 062110 (2010)]. It is valid for multicarrier signals with an arbitrary number of carriers with different amplitude, arbitrary frequency, and phase conditions and for any material coating. This new theory is able to model the real dynamics of the electrons during the multipactor discharge for both single and double surface interactions. Among other parameters of the discharge, it calculates the evolution in time of the charge growth, electron absorption, and creation rates as well as the instantaneous secondary emission yield and order. An extensive set of numerical tests with particle-in-cell software has been carried out in order to validate the theory under many different conditions. This theoretical development constitutes the first multipactor theory which completely characterizes the multipactor discharge for arbitrary multicarrier signals, setting the first step for further investigations in the field. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

The method relies on the perturbation of the boundary conditions on the metallic walls of the waveguides. Following this advanced technique, we are able to compute a complex modal propagation constant, thus avoiding the drawbacks of the classical power-loss method where losses associated to evanescent modes were not taken into account. A Computer Aided Design (CAD) software package based on such a modal analysis tool has been applied to predict the propagation loss effects in a Ka-Band rectangular waveguide filter. © 2011 IEEE.

In this contribution a new and efficient integral equation formulation is presented for the analysis of arbitrarily shaped capacitive waveguide devices. The technique benefits from the symmetry of the structure in order to reduce the dimensions of the problem from three to two dimensions. For the first time, this technique formulates the waveguide capacitive discontinuity problem as a 2-D scattering problem with oblique incidence, combined with an efficient calculation of the parallel plate Green's functions. The numerical method allows the efficient evaluation of the electromagnetic fields inside the analyzed structures. Results for different practical capacitive waveguide devices are successfully compared with commercial software tools for validation of the proposed theory. Finally, a novel low-pass filter implementation based on circular conducting posts has been proposed. The field contour lines in the critical gaps of the new structure are curved due to the use of rounded posts. This could result in improved power handling capabilities with respect to standard corrugated low-pass filters. Copyright 2011 by the American Geophysical Union.

Las guías coaxiales se emplean frecuentemente en la alimentación e interconexión de un elevado número de dispositivos de microondas y ondas milimétricas utilizados en numerosas aplicaciones prácticas (filtros, diplexores, multiplexores, etc.). Por ello, la caracterización rigurosa y eficiente de la excitación coaxial de dispositivos implementados en tecnología guiada es un tema de investigación muy importante que ha sido tratado ampliamente en la literatura técnica. Sin embargo, el número de contribuciones que se dedican a investigar este tema desde un punto de vista multimodal es realmente reducido. El objetivo fundamental de este trabajo consiste en la caracterización multimodal eficiente de la excitación coaxial de dispositivos implementados en guía rectangular utilizando el método BI-RME (Boundary Integral - Resonant Mode Expansion) 3D. En concreto, en este trabajo se caracterizan dos tipos de configuraciones ampliamente utilizadas en la práctica: la excitación coaxial clásica, y la excitación coaxial en configuración colineal. Este último tipo de excitación se emplea comúnmente en los denominados filtros en configuración comb-line, los cuales también son objeto de investigación en el presente trabajo. En particular, se ha desarrollado una herramienta de análisis y diseño muy eficiente desde un punto de vista computacional que permite caracterizar de forma precisa este tipo de filtros. Otro de los objetivos del presente trabajo es el análisis y el diseño de uniones en guía rectangular compensadas con postes conductores de geometría cilíndrica utilizando la técnica BI-RME 3D. Las uniones diseñadas (codos rectos, uniones en T, uniones T mágica y uniones turnstile) presentan una respuesta eléctrica óptima y, además, el trabajo desarrollado demuestra que la posición relativa del poste en la estructura es un parámetro de diseño muy importante que no se había considerado previamente en la literatura técnica dedicada a este tema.

[EN] A new mechanism of long-term multipactor in multicarrier systems is studied employing both analytical and numerical methods. In particular, the investigation is focused on the impact that a realistic secondary emission yield at low energies produces on the development of long term multipactor. A novel analytical model for this interperiod charge accumulation is presented using the traditional multipactor theory for parallel plates, and approximating the multicarrier signal as a single-carrier signal modulated by a pulsed signal envelope. The analytical predictions are verified by numerical simulations for a typical rectangular waveguide. The analytical and numerical results demonstrate that the susceptibility of the system to develop a long-term multipactor discharge increases with higher values of low-energy secondary emission yield.
