Abstract

Lithium niobate (LiNbO3) thin films with 1/1 stoichiometry were prepared by a spin-coating from polymeric precursor method. The films deposited on silicon (100) substrates, were thermally treated from 400° to 600°C for 3 hours in order to study the influence of thermal treatment on the crystallinity, microstructure, grain size and roughness. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that LiNbO3 phase crystallizes at low temperature (400°C). It was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that it is possible to obtain dense thin films at temperatures around 500°C. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) results showed that the grain size and roughness are strongly influenced by the annealing temperature.Películas delgadas de niobato de litio (LiNbO3) con estequiometria 1/1 han sido preparadas por el proceso “spin-coating” utilizándose precursores poliméricos. Las capas depositadas en sustratos de silicio (100) han sido tratadas térmicamente entre 400°C y 600°C durante 3 horas. El objetivo ha sido estudiar como el tratamiento térmico influye en la cristalinidad, microestructura, tamaño de granos y rugosidad de as películas. La cristalización de la fase LiNbO3 ocurre a bajas temperaturas (400ϒC), como demuestran los resultados de análisis por difracción de rayos-X (DRX) obtenidos para las películas. Los resultados por MEB posibilitaron la conclusión de que a temperaturas alrededor de 500°C se obtienen películas delgadas densas. Por su turno, el tamaño de granos y rugosidad son muy afectados por la temperatura de calentamiento, siendo esta conclusión posible por los análisis por MFA.

10. Prevalence and prognostic implications of myocardial injury across different waves of COVID-19

Abstract

Introduction: The prognostic ability of myocardial injury across different waves of the COVID-19 pandemic is not well established. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and prognostic implications of myocardial injury in the first and sixth wave of COVID-19. Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study that included patients admitted to the emergency department with COVID-19 with data on concentrations of cardiac troponin during the first and sixth wave. We compared the prevalence of myocardial injury and its predictive capacity for 30-day all-cause death in both waves. Results and discussion: A total of 346 patients were included (1st wave 199 and 6th wave 147 patients). The prevalence of myocardial injury was 21% with non-significant differences between waves. Myocardial injury was associated, in both waves, with a higher prevalence of comorbidities and with an increased risk of 30-day all-cause death [1st wave HR: 3.73 (1.84–7.55); p < 0.001 and 6th wave HR: 3.13 (1.23–7.92); p = 0.016], with non-significant differences in predictive capacity between groups after ROC curve analysis [AUC: 1st wave 0.829 (95% CI: 0.764–0.895) and 6th wave 0.794 (95% CI: 0.711–0.876)]. As limitations, this is a retrospective study with a relatively small simple size and troponin assay was performed at the discretion of the emergency physician so selection bias could be present. In conclusion, the prevalence of myocardial injury and its prognostic capacity was similar in both waves despite vaccination programs. Myocardial injury predicts short-term mortality in all COVID-19 patients, so they should be treated intensively.

Abstract

Skin prick testing (SPT) is the cornerstone of IgE-mediated allergy diagnosis,1 due to its high sensitivity and specificity.2 However, a uniform method for wheal measurement does not exist. Ansotegui et al.2 recommends to measure wheals in millimeters with a ruler, in many centers they are outlined with a pen and transfer by tape to a paper and then measured. Subsequently, the specialist is able to manually measure the maximum (MD) and orthogonal diameter (OD) of the wheal. This procedure is time consuming and makes repro-ducible measurements difficult.2,3 Knowing the wheal's area could help make a more accurate diagnosis.4 Over the last 30 years, many attempts have been made to develop a device to measure the size of SPT.3 Nexkin DSPT® (Figure S1A,B) is a novel mechatronic system based on 3D laser technology, that automatically locates allergen's wheal and measures its size (MD, OD and area in square millimeters) (Figure S1C).

Abstract

HIV population is aging at an earlier age than those uninfected, requiring more non-HIV medications to treat noncommunicable diseases. In the context of chronic HIV infection, the next therapeutic change would be the polymedication control. This paper has the purpose of explore the attitudes of older people living with HIV toward deprescribing. This was an observational, prospective and multicenter study conducted from March-April, 2018. People living with HIV (PLWH) on highly active antiretroviral therapy and older than 65 years were included. In addition to demographic and pharmacotherapeutic data, attitudes regarding deprescribing were collected through the "Revised Patients' Attitudes Towards Deprescribing Questionnaire". A total of 42 patients were included in this study. Regarding their attitudes in relation to deprescription, there were three statements with the most consensuses. The first ("I have a good understanding of the reasons I was prescribed each of my medicines") had 91.9% consensus. The second and third questions showed 89.2% consensus in both cases; "Overall, I am satisfied with my current medicines" and "I like to be involved in making decisions about my medicines with my doctors". This study is the first to explore the beliefs and attitudes of older PLWH in relation to deprescription process. There are positive attitudes regarding medication knowledge but there also is a percentage of patients who had a negative opinion regarding deprescription. We must study and go deeper in our knowledge of techniques that could help us to better understand their preferences, in order to establish effective and successful deprescription strategies.

Abstract

Rainfall is the key factor to understand soil erosion processes, mechanisms, and rates. Most research was conducted to determine rainfall characteristics and their relationship with soil erosion (erosivity) but there is little information about how atmospheric patterns control soil losses, and this is important to enable sustainable environmental planning and risk prevention. We investigated the temporal and spatial variability of the relationships of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield with atmospheric patterns (weather types, WTs) in the western Mediterranean basin. For this purpose, we analyzed a large database of rainfall events collected between 1985 and 2015 in 46 experimental plots and catchments with the aim to: (i) evaluate seasonal differences in the contribution of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield produced by the WTs; and (ii) to analyze the seasonal efficiency of the different WTs (relation frequency and magnitude) related to rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield. The results indicate two different temporal patterns: the first weather type exhibits (during the cold period: autumn and winter) westerly flows that produce the highest rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield values throughout the territory; the second weather type exhibits easterly flows that predominate during the warm period (spring and summer) and it is located on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. However, the cyclonic situations present high frequency throughout the whole year with a large influence extended around the western Mediterranean basin. Contrary, the anticyclonic situations, despite of its high frequency, do not contribute significantly to the total rainfall, runoff, and sediment (showing the lowest efficiency) because of atmospheric stability that currently characterize this atmospheric pattern. Abstract

Rainfall is the key factor to understand soil erosion processes, mechanisms, and rates. Most research was conducted to determine rainfall characteristics and their relationship with soil erosion (erosivity) but there is little information about how atmospheric patterns control soil losses, and this is important to enable sustainable environmental planning and risk prevention. We investigated the temporal and spatial variability of the relationships of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield with atmospheric patterns (weather types, WTs) in the western Mediterranean basin. For this purpose, we analyzed a large database of rainfall events collected between 1985 and 2015 in 46 experimental plots and catchments with the aim to: (i) evaluate seasonal differences in the contribution of rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield produced by the WTs; and (ii) to analyze the seasonal efficiency of the different WTs (relation frequency and magnitude) related to rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield. The results indicate two different temporal patterns: the first weather type exhibits (during the cold period: autumn and winter) westerly flows that produce the highest rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield values throughout the territory; the second weather type exhibits easterly flows that predominate during the warm period (spring and summer) and it is located on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. However, the cyclonic situations present high frequency throughout the whole year with a large influence extended around the western Mediterranean basin. Contrary, the anticyclonic situations, despite of its high frequency, do not contribute significantly to the total rainfall, runoff, and sediment (showing the lowest efficiency) because of atmospheric stability that currently characterize this atmospheric pattern.
