3. Continental-scale assessment of micro-pumped hydro energy storage using agricultural reservoirs

Abstract

The transition to low-carbon power systems necessitates cost-effective energy storage solutions. This study provides the first continental-scale assessment of micro-pumped hydro energy storage and proposes using agricultural reservoirs (farm dams) to significantly reduce construction costs. The continent of Australia is used as a representative case study for other arid and temperate regions internationally. From a new survey of its 1.7 million farm dams, we identified 30,295 promising pumped hydro sites in dam-to-dam and dam-to-river reservoir configurations. The average site had nearby reservoirs (132 m) with a high head height (32 m) and substantial discharge capacity (52 kWh). We then benchmarked a representative micro-pumped hydro site to a commercially available lithium-ion battery for a solar-powered irrigation system. Despite a low discharge efficiency (68%), pumped hydro storage was 30% less expensive (0.215 USD/kWh) for larger single-cycle loads (∼41 kWh/day) due to its high storage capacity. By capitalising on existing farm dams, micro-pumped hydro energy storage may support the uptake of reliable, low-carbon power systems in agricultural communities.

Abstract

Political decarbonisation commitments and outcompeting renewable electricity costs are disrupting energy systems. This foresight study prepares stakeholders for this dynamic, reactive change by examining visions that constitute a probable, plausible and possible component of future energy systems. Visions were extrapolated through an expert review of energy technologies and Australian case studies. ‘Probable–Abundant’ envisages a high penetration of solar and wind with increased value of balancing services: batteries, pumped hydro and transmission. This vision is exemplified by the South Australian grid, where variable and distributed sources lead generation. ‘Plausible–Traded’ envisages power and power fuel exports given hydrogen and high-voltage direct-current transmission advances, reflected by public and private sector plans to leverage rich natural resources for national and intercontinental exchanges. ‘Possible–Zero’ envisages the application of carbon removal and nuclear technologies in response to the escalating challenge of deep decarbonisation. The Australian critical minerals strategy signals adaptations of high-emission industries to shifting energy resource values. These visions contribute a flexible, accessible framework for diverse stakeholders to discuss uncertain energy systems changes and consider issues from new perspectives. Appraisal of preferred futures allows stakeholders to recognise observed changes as positive or negative and may lead to new planning aspirations.

Abstract

: Introduction: Guidelines regarding antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation in HIV infection have varied over time, with the 2015 World Health Organization recommendation suggesting ART initiation at the time of diagnosis regardless of CD4 T‐cell counts. Herein, we investigated the influence of socio‐demographic and clinical factors in addition to time trends on early ART initiation among participants of the Montreal Primary HIV Infection Study. Methods: The Montreal Primary HIV Infection Study is a prospective cohort established in three community medical centres (CMCs) and two university medical centres (UMCs). Recently diagnosed HIV‐infected adults were categorized as receiving early (vs. delayed) ART if ART was initiated within 180 days of the baseline visit. Associations between early ART initiation and socio‐demographic, socio‐economic and behavioural information were examined. Independent associations of factors linked with early ART initiation were determined using multivariable binary logistic regression analysis. Results: A total of 348 participants had a documented date of HIV acquisition of Conclusions: Early ART initiation during primary HIV infection was associated with diminished biological prognostic factors and calendar time mirroring evolution of treatment guidelines. Abstract

Maritime strategists continue to assess the challenges involved with projecting naval power. From the historical writings of Thucydides in evaluating the key events of the Peloponnesian War to the Inchon landing in 1950, the delivery of ground forces from the sea has been a central function of naval forces. The Anglo-American Allies further developed the ability to plan and execute Joint Combined amphibious operations during the World War II island-hopping campaigns in the Pacific and more recently during the deceptive feint in Desert Storm. Today, the ever changing strategic landscape requires naval forces to be increasingly flexible, scalable and rapidly deployable in order to meet the diverse set of strategic imperatives outlined in the 21st century joint Maritime Strategy. The Expeditionary Strike Group of the future must be structured and aligned to provide ready, capable and sustainable expeditionary naval forces to fit and fight in the modern Joint Task Force., The original document contains color images.
