Abstract

The Avebury henge is one of the famous megalithic monuments of the European Neolithic, yet much remains unknown about the detail and chronology of its construction. Here, the results of a new geophysical survey and re-examination of earlier excavation records illuminate the earliest beginnings of the monument. The authors suggest that Avebury's Southern Inner Circle was constructed to memorialise and monumentalise the site of a much earlier foundational' house. The significance here resides in the way that traces of habitation may take on special social and historical value, leading to their marking and commemoration through major acts of monument building. Abstract

A series of recent excavations on the 2nd Century AD Antonine frontier forts of the Midland Scottish valley, have produced results which suggest that the army was making its own pottery on an appreciable scale. This was at a time when pottery production was thought to have moved almost exclusively into civilian hands. The possible local ware groups identified by the excavations were largely independent of firm source indicators such as kiln and waster material and the number of available samples was often-small. A program of Neutron Activation and Thin Section petrological analyses was undertaken along with an investigation into Textural Analysis, a facet of the Petrological toolkit. The aim was both to define the site ware groups and a group of specialist vessels thought to be local to Scotland, the Mortaria, and to make statements as to their provenance. Although the Mortaria analysis was limited by problems of sample group size and availability, by improving the objectivity of the statistical handling of the derived data sets and developing methods for the high level study of textural data, the site ware groups were defined successfully at both the "intrall and "inter" site levels. The analyses also furnished interpretations as to the mode and nature of the site production schemes. Through the full analysis of' site Daub samples linked to more traditional provenancing techniques, in all but one case the ware groups could be assigned to the source sites, where contrasting production modes could be identified with military as opposed to civilian production.

17. Alterity, Otherness and Nomad Geometries: New Trajectories for the Interpretation of Late Neolithic Monuments.

Abstract

This paper focuses upon alterity and how we can more fully embrace intimations of otherness in our dealings with prehistoric monuments. Taking as its inspiration recent attempts to explain such structures, and the landscapes of which they were part, it makes two arguments. First, that while ethnographic analogies offer a vital point of departure for thinking through the possibilities raised by alterity and otherness, we may well have been overlooking a rich set of data—derived from careful excavation and painstaking metrical analyses—that has been sitting in front of us for a very long time. Second, despite over a decade of sustained critical debate, we seem remarkably timid when it comes to seeing where these data might take us. Through the lens of two Late Neolithic stone circles from southern Britain (one big, one small), research into measurement units and alignments is allied with recent excavation and survey data in order to explore ideas of hybridity, nomad-geometry and the arresting/manipulation of time and motion. Abstract

Predictive modelling is a set of techniques, used since the 1970s, to predict the location of archaeological sites in uninvestigated areas as an aid to spatial planning, for example, in Cultural Resource Management. Predictive modelling is also used to develop and test scientific models of human locational behaviour, as it is based on either statistical extrapolation from known archaeological data, or on explanatory models of site location preference. In practice, a number of methods can be used in predictive modelling, and the resulting maps of predicted site locations or density can vary in accuracy. The main difficulties in producing accurate and precise predictive models are coupled to the resolution and representativeness of the archaeological and non-archaeological datasets used, the theoretical frameworks underlying the models, and the nature, or lack, of model testing. Nonetheless, predictive models are often found useful to provide basic protection to areas of high sensitivity, and can save costs for development projects or archaeological investigations.

30. Betylmania? - Small Standing Stones and the Megaliths of South-West Britain

Abstract

This paper calls attention to a previously neglected element of thebroad repertoire of monumental megalithic structures that characterize thelater third and second millennia BC across the British Isles – extremely smallstanding stones. Despite their frequency and the complex arrangements andassociations they embody, these miniliths are rarely recorded in detail andfrequently marginalized to a generic background. As a result, they are largelyabsent from interpretative accounts. Abstract

This volume describes the results of the Longstones Project, a joint-universities programme of excavation and survey designed to develop a fuller understanding of the context and dynamics of monument construction in the later Neolithic (3rd millennium BC) of the Avebury region, Wiltshire. Several elements of this internationally important prehsitoric monument complex were investigated: an early-mid 3rd millennium BC enclosure at Beckhampton; the recently re-discovered Beckhampton Avenue and Longstones Cove; a section of the West Kennet Avenue; the Falkner's stone circle; and the Cove within Avebury's Northern Inner Circle.
