The objectives of the study were to examine provider-family communication about attention deficit disorder during pediatric asthma visits. Children with asthma, aged 8 through 16 and their parents were recruited at five pediatric practices. All medical visits were audio-taped. There were 296 asthmatic children enrolled into the study and 67 of them also had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD communication elements suggested by national guidelines were discussed infrequently. Providers were more likely to discuss, educate, and ask one or more questions about ADHD medications if the visit was non-asthma related. Providers included child input into the ADHD treatment regimen during 3 % of visits and they included parent input during 4.5 % of visits. Only one child and three parents asked questions about ADHD. Providers may neglect essential aspects of good ADHD management and communication in children who have ADHD plus another chronic condition such as asthma. Providers should set appropriate treatment expectations, establish target symptoms, and encourage children and parents to ask questions so mutual decision-making can occur.

SCINCIDAE UF 153513 (Fig. 62 in Krysko et al. 2011; MorphoBank M 88653) was reported as the Fire Skink, Lepidothyris fernandi (Burton 1836). However, W. Böhme and P. Wagner (personal communication) reidentified this photographic voucher as the Fire-sided Skink, Trachylepis perrotetii (Duméril and Bibron 1839), a morphologically similar species indigenous to a broad region extending from Senegal eastward to along the southern-facing coast of western Africa, into central Africa as far east as the northern Congo Republic (Schmidt 1919; Welch 1982). Gibbons et al. (2009) hypothesized that T. perrotetii would be introduced to Florida via the pet trade; however, they erroneously provided a photograph of L. fernandi as an illustration for T. perrotetii, thus illustrating the difficulty in distinguishing these two morphologically similar species.

LACERTIDAE UF 157202 (Fig. 59 in Krysko et al. 2011; MorphoBank M 88650) was reported as the Japanese Grass Lizard, Takydromus tachydromoides (Schlegel 1838). However, W. B��hme and H. Ota (personal communication) reidentified this photographic voucher as the Ocellated Grass Lizard, Takydromus sexlineatus ocellatus (Gu��rin-M��neville 1829) (see Cowan 1971; Zhao and Adler 1993 for publication history), a morphologically similar lacertid indigenous to a region of southeastern Asia that includes eastern India, southern China (including Hong Kong), eastern Myanmar, Thailand to Vietnam, and southward into the northern Malay peninsula (Zhao and Adler 1993; Manthey and Grossmann 1997), although the exact indigenous distribution of specimens putatively identified as T. sexlineatus, as well as subspecific classification of the species requires further study (Lin et al. 2002; Ota et al. 2002; Bhupathy et al. 2009)., Published as part of Krysko, Kenneth L., Somma, Louis A., Rochford, Michael R., Gillette, Christopher R, Enge, Kevin M. & Cueva, Daniel, 2012, Taxonomic corrections of certain verified non-indigenous reptiles from Florida reported by Krysko et al. VARANIDAE UF 153409 (Fig. 65 in Krysko et al. 2011; MorphoBank M 88656) was reported as the East African White-throated Monitor, Varanus albigularis microstictus Boettger 1893. However, W. B��hme (personal communication) reidentified this photographic voucher as the Southern White-throated Monitor, Varanus albigularis albigularis (Daudin 1802), a varanid indigenous to a broad region of southern Africa as far north as extreme southern Congo Republic (Bennett 1998; Phillips 2004). UF 152520 was correctly identified as the East African White-throated Monitor, V. a. microstictus (A. Koch personal communication), but it was inadvertently referred to as the ���Black-throated Monitor ��� in Table 1 of Krysko et al. (2011). This image was uploaded to Morphobank (M 101333), which represents the only known voucher of this taxon to date and increases the number to 138 of known introduced non-indigenous amphibians and reptiles in Florida from 1863 through 2010. UF 160345 (Fig. 66 in Krysko et al. 2011; MorphoBank M 88657) was reported as the Pacific Mangrove Monitor, Varanus indicus (Daudin 1802). However, W. B��hme and A. Koch (personal communication) reidentified this photographic voucher as the Blue-tailed Monitor, Varanus doreanus (Meyer 1874), a morphologically similar species indigenous to large parts of New Guinea and neighboring islands, Aru Islands, and northernmost Queensland, Australia (B��hme et al. 1994, 2004; Bennett 1998). As for the two varanids (Varanus albigularis albigularis and V. doreanus) and one skink (Trachylepis perrotetii) above, we were limited in our abilities to correctly identify morphologically similar species that we were unfamiliar with based on only a photograph. GEOEMYDIDAE UF 121604 (Fig. 25 in Krysko et al. 2011; MorphoBank M 88569) was reported as the Tropical Wood Turtle, Rhinoclemmys pulcherrima “(Linnaeus 1758)” (= Linnaei 1758), and incorrectly cited Rhodin and Carr (2009). However, J. Carr (personal communication) informed us that the family name was misspelled as “ Geomydidae ” and the correct nomenclature for this species is R. pulcherrima (Gray 1856) (also see Rhodin et al. 2010). Rhodin and Carr (2009) should have been cited in the nomenclatural history and authority for the Spot-legged Turtle, Rhinoclemmys punctularia (Daudin 1801), another non-indigenous species collected in Florida (Krysko et al. 2011).

A secondary analysis was conducted on child interview, caregiver questionnaire, and transcripts of audiotaped medical visit data collected in North Carolina clinics from 2005-2009. The data includes 35 providers and 295 children with persistent asthma. Qualitative analyses examined the content of control medication side effect, risk, and benefit discussions. Generalized estimating equations were used to predict side effect, risk, and benefit discussions, medication adherence, and concerns about side effects. Results revealed that 4% of visits included side effect discussions. Side effect discussions were more likely with younger children. Sixteen percent of visits included risk discussions. Risks were more likely to be discussed when children were taking/prescribed an inhaled corticosteroid and during longer visits. Approximately 47% of visits included benefit discussions. Benefits were more likely to be discussed when: the child was younger; the child was taking/prescribed an inhaled corticosteroid; and adherence was discussed. Average medication adherence was 85%. Caregivers were more likely to report the child as 80% or more adherent when the: child took more control medications, visit was longer, and the child had seen the provider more. Discussions of medication risks were not associated with control medication adherence of at least 80%, contrary to our hypothesis. Approximately 37% of caregivers reported a concern about side effects. Caregivers were more likely to report a concern when the child had seen the provider less. Discussions of risks were not associated with caregivers reporting a problem/concern about side effects, contrary to our hypothesis. Approximately 33% of children reported a concern about side effects. Children were more likely to report a concern about side effects when the: caregiver was not married, child did not take an inhaled corticosteroid, and they saw male providers. Discussions of side effects and benefits were not associated with the child reporting a concern, contrary to the hypotheses. Study results showed that discussions of medication benefits were more frequent than discussions of side effects and risks, although less than half of visits had benefit discussions. Future research should investigate how to improve communication in these areas.
