Abstract

The electron transport in n -type diamond is investigated using a series of (100) homoepitaxial layers doped with phosphorus in the range of 10 16 –10 18 cm − 3 . The electrical properties of the n -type layers, such as electron concentration and mobility, were measured using the resistivity and Hall effect as a function of temperature. The scattering of electrons in the diamond was modeled for the (100) orientation, which is preferred for electronic device applications. The physical parameters extracted from the fitting of the experimental data allow us to discuss the upper limit for the electron mobility in (100) n -type diamond. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. Horses in A Modern War: A Modernity Misconstrued

Abstract

This research focuses on the representation of horses in First World War historiographies. By means of an analysis of artworks, such as paintings, cartoons and poetry, the various connotations that underline these depictions of horses are uncovered. Of all these tropes, the idea that horses were incompatible with modernity - a notion that often underlies First World War histories - became most influential in historical reconstructions of the war. This influences historiographies to such an extent that a modernity discourse can be discerned. In this discursive narrative, the modern elements of the war such as technological innovations are the primary topics of discussion. These modern elements are further juxtaposed with those elements that are considered traditional and outdated. Horses in their role as cavalry are primarily used to this end, leading to a simplification of historical reconstructions in which millions of actors are largely written out of the narrative. Even though various historians have argued for the importance of horses in terms of both motive and fighting power, it is argued that such revisions have not been incorporated into the most recent historiographies due to the existence of a modernity discourse and the binaries underlying it. Accordingly, this thesis offers an alternative method of historical reconstruction using Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory. In doing so, a primary source analysis of war diaries, photographs and maps results in a very different narrative, in which the social is no longer solely “modern” and anthropocentric. As such, an inclusive historiography becomes possible which, in turn, is sensitive to the various actors that have greatly influenced the way in which events have unfolded.

Abstract

6AP and GA are potent inhibitors of yeast and mammalian prions and also specific inhibitors of PFAR, the protein-folding activity borne by domain V of the large rRNA of the large subunit of the ribosome. We therefore explored the link between PFAR and yeast prion [PSI(+)] using both PFAR-enriched mutants and site-directed methylation. We demonstrate that PFAR is involved in propagation and de novo formation of [PSI(+)]. PFAR and the yeast heat-shock protein Hsp104 partially compensate each other for [PSI(+)] propagation. Our data also provide insight into new functions for the ribosome in basal thermotolerance and heat-shocked protein refolding. PFAR is thus an evolutionarily conserved cell component implicated in the prion life cycle, and we propose that it could be a potential therapeutic target for human protein misfolding diseases.

Abstract

Metastatic lymph node 51 (MLN51, also known as CASC3) is a core component of the exon junction complex (EJC), which is loaded onto spliced mRNAs and plays an essential role in determining their fate. Unlike the three other EJC core components [eIF4AIII, Magoh and Y14 (also known as RBM8A)], MLN51 is mainly located in the cytoplasm, where it plays a key role in the assembly of stress granules. In this study, we further investigated the cytoplasmic role of MLN51. We show that MLN51 is a new component of processing bodies (P-bodies). When overexpressed, MLN51 localizes in novel small cytoplasmic foci. These contain RNA, show directed movements and are distinct from stress granules and P-bodies. The appearance of these foci correlates with the process of P-body disassembly. A similar reduction in P-body count is also observed in human HER2-positive (HER2(+)) breast cancer cells overexpressing MLN51. This suggests that P-body disassembly and subsequent mRNA deregulation might correlate with cancer progression.

Abstract

Two studies were carried out to investigate the relationship between attributional style (Study 1), self-esteem (Study 2), and different forms of celebrity worship. Entertainment social celebrity worship (the most normal form considered) was unrelated to attributional style or self-esteem; intense personal celebrity worship was related positively to self-esteem but also to a propensity toward stable and globalattributions; and borderline pathological celebrity worship (the most negative form considered) was related to external, stable, and global attributions. These results were independent of whether participants were located in Europe or North America, and are discussed in terms of whether celebrity worship should be regarded as positive or negative and as a unitary concept.

Abstract

International audience; Aclacinomycin (ACLA) and doxorubicin (DOX) were used at subtoxic concentrations to induce erythroid differentiation in the human leukemic cell line K562. Cell hemoglobinization was accompanied by the increased expression of genes encoding y-globin and porphobilinogen deaminase (PBGD), an enzyme of heme synthesis. By using run-on assays, ACLA was shown to induce an enhancement of the transcription of erythroid genes, including 'y-globin, PBGD, erythropoietin receptor, and GATA-1 transcription factor. In contrast, in DOX-treated cells, the transcription rate of these genes was unchanged in comparison with control cells. In addition, inhibition of mRNA synthesis with actinomycin D indicated that DOX induced an increased stability of PBGD and GATA-1 mRNAs, whereas ACLA did not affect the half-lives of these mRNAs. Because the increase in erythroid mRNA steady-state level in anthracycline-treated cells was inhibited by cycloheximide, this suggests that transcriptional activation in ACLA-treated cells and mRNA stabilization in DOX-treated cells were dependent on de novo protein synthesis. Finally, GATA-1 protein level was shown to be increased in ACLA-treated but not in DOX-treated cells. These two anthracyclines, although closely related in their structures, appeared to act as differentiation inducers by distinct mechanisms. Indeed, erythroid gene expression was demonstrated to be regulated transcriptionally by ACLA and mainly posttranscriptionally by DOX.
