1. Detecting the Neutrino Gravitational Wave Memory from Core-Collapse Supernovae using the Moon

Abstract

Following the milestone of detecting gravitational waves (GWs) from merging compact binaries, the next significant watershed moment in GW astronomy lies in detecting GWs from core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). In this Letter, I describe the possibility of detecting the GW linear memory -- a phenomenon resulting from a combination of aspherical matter ejection and anisotropic neutrino emission during stellar collapse -- using GW detectors on the Moon. This would grant unprecedented access to the sub-Hz/Hz GW frequency range, which is inaccessible to both current and future terrestrial GW detectors. I demonstrate that three-dimensional CCSNe GW waveforms may be detectable by both seismometer and interferometeric lunar GW detectors, with the latter design proposal extending 10 kpc to megaparsec detection distances., Comment: Submitted to ApJ Letters. Abstract

The Lunar Gravitational-wave Antenna (LGWA) is a proposed array of next-generation inertial sensors to monitor the response of the Moon to gravitational waves (GWs). Given the size of the Moon and the expected noise produced by the lunar seismic background, the LGWA would be able to observe GWs from about 1 mHz to 1 Hz. This would make the LGWA the missing link between space-borne detectors like LISA with peak sensitivities around a few millihertz and proposed future terrestrial detectors like Einstein Telescope or Cosmic Explorer. In this article, we provide a first comprehensive analysis of the LGWA science case including its multi-messenger aspects and lunar science with LGWA data. We also describe the scientific analyses of the Moon required to plan the LGWA mission.

Abstract

Type-I Superluminous Supernovae (SLSNe) are an exotic class of core-collapse SN (CCSN) that can be up to 100 times brighter and more slowly-evolving than normal CCSNe. SLSNe represent the end-stages of the most massive stripped stars, and are thought to be powered by the spin-down energy of a millisecond magnetar. Studying them and measuring their physical parameters can help us to better understand stellar mass-loss, evolution, and explosions. Moreover, thanks to their high luminosities, SLSNe can be seen up to greater distances, allowing us to explore how stellar physics evolves as a function of redshift. The High Latitude Time Domain Survey (HLTDS) will provide us with an exquisite dataset that will discover 100s of SLSNe. Here, we focus on the question of which sets of filters and cadences will allow us to best characterize the physical parameters of these SLSNe. We simulate a set of SLSNe at redshifts ranging from z = 0.1 to z = 5.0, using six different sets of filters, and cadences ranging from 5 to 100 days. We then fit these simulated light curves to attempt to recover the input parameter values for their ejecta mass, ejecta velocity, magnetic field strength, and magnetar spin period. We find that four filters are sufficient to accurately characterize SLSNe at redshifts below $z = 3$, and that cadences faster than 20 days are required to obtain measurements with an uncertainty below 10\%, although a cadence of 70 days is still acceptable under certain conditions. Finally, we find that the nominal survey strategy will not be able to properly characterize the most distant SLSNe at $z = 5$. We find that the addition of 60-day cadence observations for 4 years to the nominal HLTDS survey can greatly improve the prospect of characterizing these most extreme and distant SNe, with only an 8\% increase to the time commitment of the survey., Comment: Submitted as part of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope's Core Community Surveys call for white papers

4. Deep Learning Detection and Classification of Gravitational Waves from Neutron Star-Black Hole Mergers

Abstract

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and Virgo Interferometer Collaborations have now detected all three classes of compact binary mergers: binary black hole (BBH), binary neutron star (BNS), and neutron star-black hole (NSBH). For coalescences involving neutron stars, the simultaneous observation of gravitational and electromagnetic radiation produced by an event, has broader potential to enhance our understanding of these events, and also to probe the equation of state (EOS) of dense matter. However, electromagnetic follow-up to gravitational wave (GW) events requires rapid real-time detection and classification of GW signals, and conventional detection approaches are computationally prohibitive for the anticipated rate of detection of next-generation GW detectors. In this work, we present the first deep learning based results of classification of GW signals from NSBH mergers in \textit{real} LIGO data. We show for the first time that a deep neural network can successfully distinguish all three classes of compact binary mergers and separate them from detector noise. Specifically, we train a convolutional neural network (CNN) on $\sim 500,000$ data samples of real LIGO noise with injected BBH, BNS, and NSBH GW signals, and we show that our network has high sensitivity and accuracy. Most importantly, we successfully recover the two confirmed NSBH events to-date (GW200105 and GW200115) and the two confirmed BNS mergers to-date (GW170817 and GW190425), together with $\approx 90\%$ of all BBH candidate events from the third Gravitational Wave Transient Catalog, GWTC-3. 5. Constraining the Time of Gravitational Wave Emission from Core-Collapse Supernovae

Abstract

The advent of sensitive gravitational wave (GW) detectors, coupled with wide-field, high cadence optical time-domain surveys, raises the possibility of the first joint GW-electromagnetic (EM) detections of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). For targeted searches of GWs from CCSNe optical observations can be used to increase the sensitivity of the search by restricting the relevant time interval, defined here as the GW search window (GSW). The extent of the GSW is a critical factor in determining the achievable false alarm probability (FAP) for a triggered CCSN search. The ability to constrain the GSW from optical observations depends on how early a CCSN is detected, as well as the ability to model the early optical emission. Here we present several approaches to constrain the GSW, ranging in complexity from model-independent analytical fits of the early light curve, model-dependent fits of the rising or entire light curve, and a new data-driven approach using existing well-sampled CCSN light curves from {\it Kepler} and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We use these approaches to determine the time of core-collapse and its associated uncertainty (i.e., the GSW). We apply our methods to two Type II SNe that occurred during LIGO/Virgo Observing Run 3: SN\,2019fcn and SN\,2019ejj (both in the same galaxy at $d=15.7$ Mpc). Our approach shortens the duration of the GSW and improves the robustness of the GSW compared to techniques used in past GW CCSN searches.

6. Modeling Core-Collapse Supernovae Gravitational-Wave Memory in Laser Interferometric Data

Abstract

We study the properties of the gravitational wave (GW) emission between $10^{-5}$ Hz and $50$ Hz (which we refer to as low-frequency emission) from core-collapse supernovae, in the context of studying such signals in laser interferometric data as well as performing multi-messenger astronomy. We pay particular attention to the GW linear memory, which is when the signal amplitude does not return to zero after the GW burst. Based on the long term simulation of a core-collapse supernova of a solar-metallicity star with a zero-age main sequence mass of 15 solar masses, we discuss the spectral properties, the memory's dependence on observer position and the polarization of low-frequency GWs from slowly non (or slowly) rotating core-collapse supernovae. We make recommendations on the angular spacing of the orientations needed to properly produce results that are averaged over multiple observer locations by investigating the angular dependence of the GW emission. We propose semi-analytical models that quantify the relationship between the bulk motion of the supernova shock-wave and the GW memory amplitude. We discuss how to extend neutrino generated GW signals from numerical simulations that were terminated before the neutrino emission has subsided. We discuss how the premature halt of simulations and the non-zero amplitude of the GW memory can induce artefacts during the data analysis process. Lastly, we also investigate potential solutions and issues in the use of taperings for both ground and space-based interferometers., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

One of the key challenges of real-time detection and parameter estimation of gravitational waves from compact binary mergers is the computational cost of conventional matched-filtering and Bayesian inference approaches. In particular, the application of these methods to the full signal parameter space available to the gravitational-wave detectors, and/or real-time parameter estimation is computationally prohibitive. On the other hand, rapid detection and inference are critical for prompt follow-up of the electromagnetic and astro-particle counterparts accompanying important transients, such as binary neutron-star and black-hole neutron-star mergers. Training deep neural networks to identify specific signals and learn a computationally efficient representation of the mapping between gravitational-wave signals and their parameters allows both detection and inference to be done quickly and reliably, with high sensitivity and accuracy. In this work we apply a deep-learning approach to rapidly identify and characterize transient gravitational-wave signals from binary neutron-star mergers in real LIGO data. We show for the first time that artificial neural networks can promptly detect and characterize binary neutron star gravitational-wave signals in real LIGO data, and distinguish them from noise and signals from coalescing black-hole binaries. We illustrate this key result by demonstrating that our deep-learning framework classifies correctly all gravitational-wave events from the Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog, GWTC-1 [Phys. Rev. X 9 (2019), 031040]. 8. Interpreting gravitational-wave burst detections: constraining source properties without astrophysical models

Abstract

We show that for detections of gravitational-wave transients, constraints can be given on physical parameters of the source without using any specific astrophysical models. Relying only on fundamental principles of general relativity, we can set upper limits on the size, mass, and distance of the source solely from characteristics of the observed waveform. If the distance of the source is known from independent (e.g. electromagnetic) observations, we can also set lower limits on the mass and size. As a demonstration, we tested these constraints on binary black hole signals observed by the LIGO and Virgo detectors during their first and second observing runs, as well as on simulated binary black hole and core-collapse supernova signals reconstructed from simulated detector data. We have found that our constraints are valid for all analyzed source types, but their efficiency (namely, how far they are from the true parameter values) strongly depends on the source type, ranging from being in the same order of magnitude to a several orders of magnitude difference. In cases when a gravitational-wave signal is reconstructed without waveform templates and no astrophysical model on the source is available, these constraints provide the only quantitative characterization of the source that can guide the astrophysical modeling process., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

9. Enhancing the Sensitivity of Searches for Gravitational Waves from Core-Collapse Supernovae with a Bayesian classification of candidate events

Abstract

We demonstrate how a morphological veto involving Bayesian statistics can improve the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves of the current search for core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) as implemented by the coherent Waveburst (cWB) algorithm. Examples involving two implementations of BayesWave (BW), one that makes no assumption of the polarization state of the gravitational wave (GW) and one that uses the same elliptical polarization settings adopted in previous usages for Binary systems are provided on the set of waveforms currently adopted for the first and second Advanced LIGO (aLIGO) science runs for the targeted CCSNe search. A comparison of the performance for all-sky searches versus the targeted searches with optical triggers is provided. The average cWB+BW ROC range improvements with respect to a fixed false-alarm rate (FAR) for slowly-rotating waveforms ranged from [+1.30%, +15.76%] while the improvement for rapidly-rotating waveforms were on the order of [+1.19%, +22.05%]. The application of BW to CCSN GW triggers also shows a significant reduction of the FAR while maintaining detection efficiency and remaining sensitive to a wide range of morphological CCSNe signals. It appears that the code developed for arbitrarily polarized signals outperforms the previous code for the GW morphologies tested.

Abstract

We present an archival search for transient gravitational-wave bursts in coincidence with 27 single-pulse triggers from Green Bank Telescope pulsar surveys, using the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory), Virgo (Variability of Solar Irradiance and Gravity Oscillations) and GEO (German-UK Interferometric Detector) interferometer network. We also discuss a check for gravitational-wave signals in coincidence with Parkes fast radio bursts using similar methods. Data analyzed in these searches were collected between 2007 and 2013. Possible sources of emission of both short-duration radio signals and transient gravitational-wave emission include star quakes on neutron stars, binary coalescence of neutron stars, and cosmic string cusps. While no evidence for gravitational-wave emission in coincidence with these radio transients was found, the current analysis serves as a prototype for similar future searches using more sensitive second-generation interferometers.

We report on a new all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency band 475-2000 Hz and with a frequency time derivative in the range of [-1.0,+0.1]×10-8 Hz/s. Potential signals could be produced by a nearby spinning and slightly nonaxisymmetric isolated neutron star in our Galaxy. This search uses the data from Advanced LIGO's first observational run O1. No gravitational-wave signals were observed, and upper limits were placed on their strengths. For completeness, results from the separately published low-frequency search 20-475 Hz are included as well. Our lowest upper limit on worst-case (linearly polarized) strain amplitude h0 is ∼4×10-25 near 170 Hz, while at the high end of our frequency range, we achieve a worst-case upper limit of 1.3×10-24. For a circularly polarized source (most favorable orientation), the smallest upper limit obtained is ∼1.5×10-25. © 2018 American Physical Society.

17. Gravitational Waves in Advanced LIGO Supernova Science

Abstract

By specializing the rate toward gravitational wave detection, we improve the estimated rate of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) happening within the Local Universe. Using the Gravitational Wave Galaxy Catalog, a collection of galaxies containing electromagnetic counterparts within a volume of 20 Mpc were identified. Recognizing that the CCSNe galaxy hosts are morphologically dependent, the estimation of the rate of CCSNe took into the account the production of CCSNe happening within the Local Field at 10 Mpc, as well as the Virgo Cluster situated at 15 Mpc, by using both blue light luminosity and far-infrared luminosity to trace star formation. The improved estimation of the CCSNe rate within 20 Mpc is 432.1 ± 20.78 CCSNe Century- 1 Mpc-1. Overall, when taking the existence of major biases against CCSNe discoveries such as progenitor misclassification, the assumed mix of faint and bright supernova types, as well as the uncertainties in obscuration provided by factors such as absorption due to sources of dust and stellar remnants, light pollution from galaxy nuclei and the limited sky coverage of ground-based telescopes, our measurements provide an improvement in comparison to previously published rate standards within shorter CCSNe distance estimations. 18. LIGO-Virgo-SWIFT Collaboration on the Emission of Gravitational Waves from Supernovas

Abstract

The Core-Collapse supernovae (CCSNe) mark the explosive end of the lives of massive stars. The mysterious mechanism behind CCSNe explosions could be explained by detecting the corresponding gravitational wave (GW) emissions by the laser interferometer gravitational wave observatory, LIGO. GWs are extremely hard to detect because they are weak signals in a floor of instrument noise. Optical observations of CCSNe are already used in coincidence with LIGO data. Using the SWIFT satellite, there can be a monitoring of galaxies using the X-ray probe by observing X-ray transients in coincidence with optical CCSNe. And so, even if a supernova had its light absorbed with dust, X-ray transients that are more penetrating, and thus could be used as a hint on where to search for GWs. The main goal of this research will be to quantify the benefits for LIGO by using the SWIFT satellite to monitor galaxies within 20 Mega parsecs from Earth. The project will consist of two phases: a training phase where global knowledge of the properties of CCSNe would be achieved, as well as a research phase where the survey database and literature will be used to conduct independent evaluation and estimations of how many CCSNe could be detected by SWIFT by looking for X-ray flashes. The result will be used at a LIGO-Virgo-SWIFT conference that will be based in Italy in June to produce a memorandum of understanding between the two collaborations. 19. Improving intersection safety: Reducing casualties at high-risk intersections in Surrey, Richmond and Vancouver

Abstract

In British Columbia (BC), over 20,000 injuries and 400 fatalities occurred each year at intersections between 2000 and 2004. Using Ordinary Least Squares regression analysis, the objective of this study is to identify which of the 12 intersection characteristics play a role in predicting intersection safety. Using data from 19 intersections from Surrey, Richmond and Vancouver from the years 2000 to 2004, the findings reveal that traffic volume, restricted left-turns, permissive left-turns and right-turn lanes are positive predictors of intersection casualties. Five policy alternatives are proposed: 1) status quo, 2) reducing traffic volume, 3) eliminating the use of restricted left-turns, 4) using protected over permissive left-turns and 5) prohibiting right-turn on red. The policies are evaluated using three criteria 1) cost; 2) reduced casualty and 3) time delay. Based on the evaluation, status quo emerges as the most effective recommendation for reducing intersection casualties and improving intersection safety.
