Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia plays a significant role in the formation of gallstones more important being the cholesterol gallstones. Lipid parameters including total cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoproteins and low-density lipoproteins show a significant relation with cholesterol gallstones. Abstract

Gallbladder disease is a common health problem throughout the world. The commonest reason is gallstones accounting for over 90% of cases. Gallstones can occur in any age group of both the sexes. Incidence of gallstones increases with age and is more common in female population including both symptomatic and asymptomatic cases. Abstract

Background: The female reproductive tract is controlled by complex interaction between steroid hormones, gonadotrophins and hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. A disruption in any of these processes can result in menstrual disturbances. The present study was conducted with an aim to test the hypothesis that subtle endocrinal abnormalities detected by intensive hormone evaluation are associated with menstrual disturbances. Aim & Objective: To compare Prolactin levels in patients with menstrual disturbances with normal healthy fertile females. Methods: The present study was conducted in the Department of Biochemistry. A total of 100 patients reporting to the OPD of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, were studied. Out of 100 patients, 50 patients were with a history of menstrual disturbances, 50 patients of reproductive age group with normal menstrual cycle and with proven fertility were taken as control. Routine investigations were carried out in all the patients. The Prolactin ELISA kit was used for quantitative measurement of prolactin in human serum or plasma. Serial samples were taken for estimation of prolactin. 2 samples were taken on Day 3 of cycle on two consecutive cycles. The serum plasma prolactin reference values used were: Follicular phase up to 22 ng/ml. Result & Conclusion: Considering together, our findings support the hypothesis that women with menstrual disturbances have subtle disturbances in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis compared with their fertile counterparts and high prolactin levels play a significant role in the etiology of menstrual disturbances. 14. Interacting measure-valued diffusions and their long-term behavior

Abstract

The focus of this dissertation is a class of random processes known as interacting measure-valued stochastic processes. These processes are related to another class of stochastic processes known as superprocesses. Both superprocesses and interacting measure-valued stochastic processes arise naturally from branching particle systems as scaling limits. A branching particle system is a collection of particles that propagate randomly through space, and that upon death give birth to a random number of particles (children). Therefore when the populations of the particle system and branching rate are large one can often use a superprocess to approximate it and carry out calculations that would be very difficult otherwise. There are many branching particle systems which do not satisfy the strong independence assumptions underlying superprocesses and thus are more difficult to study mathematically. This dissertation attempts to address two measure-valued processes with different types of dependencies (interactions) that the associated particles exhibit. In both cases, the method used to carry out this work is called Perkins' historical stochastic calculus, and has never before been used to investigate interacting measure-valued processes of these types. That is, we construct the measure-valued stochastic process associated with an interacting branching particle system directly without taking a scaling limit. The first type of interaction we consider is when all particles share a common chaotic drift from being immersed in the same medium, as well as having other types of individual interactions. The second interaction involves particles that attract to or repel from the center of mass of the entire population. For measure-valued processes with this latter interaction, we study the long-term behavior of the process and show that it displays some types of equilibria.

Abstract

We have synthesized two novel fluorescent 3-(4-diethylaminocinnamoyl) coumarins that exhibit fluorescence quenching upon exposure to a nerve agent simulant, diethylchlorophosphate (DCP), providing a basis for rapid and sensitive DCP chemosensing. Furthermore, these coumarin derivatives display two-photon fluorescence upon illumination with near-infrared laser pulses and their two-photon (TP) absorption cross-section was evaluated. The potential for TP bio-imaging of these compounds was investigated by their cellular uptake in HeLa cells by TP confocal microscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
