Wildlife viewing is an important activity that has the potential to raise money for conservation efforts and support small, local ecotourism operations, and communities. It is often assumed to be low impact since it is non-consumptive; however, research shows there can be negative impacts to wildlife as a result of viewing activities, which we explore in different examples below. We provide recommendations for organizations that manage these operations to keep in mind as they consider the potential impacts of these activities and develop strategies to minimize them.

Background: An urgent need exists to identify neural correlates associated with differing levels of suicide risk and develop novel, rapid-acting therapeutics to modulate activity within these neural networks. Methods: Electrophysiological correlates of suicide were evaluated using magnetoencephalography (MEG) in 75 adults with differing levels of suicide risk. During MEG scanning, participants completed a modified Life-Death Implicit Association Task. MEG data were source-localized in the gamma (30–58 Hz) frequency, a proxy measure of excitation-inhibition balance. Dynamic causal modeling was used to evaluate differences in connectivity estimates between risk groups. A proof-of-concept, open-label, pilot study of five high risk participants examined changes in gamma power after administration of ketamine (0.5 mg/kg), an NMDAR antagonist with rapid anti-suicide ideation effects. Results: Implicit self-associations with death were stronger in the highest suicide risk group relative to all other groups, which did not differ from each other. Higher gamma power for self-death compared to self-life associations was found in the orbitofrontal cortex for the highest risk group and the insula and posterior cingulate cortex for the lowest risk group. Connectivity estimates between these regions differentiated the highest risk group from the full sample. Implicit associations with death were not affected by ketamine, but enhanced gamma power was found for self-death associations in the left insula post-ketamine compared to baseline. Conclusions: Differential implicit cognitive processing of life and death appears to be linked to suicide risk, highlighting the need for objective measures of suicidal states. Blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) is one of the most economically important berry crops worldwide. Validation of genetic mapping studies is often hindered by asynchronous marker technology. The development of a standardized genotyping platform that targets a specific set of polymorphic loci can be a practical solution to unify the scientific and breeding community toward blueberry improvement. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a targeted genotyping platform for cultivated blueberries that is affordable, reproducible, and sufficiently high density to warrant large-scale adoption for genomic studies. The Flex-Seq platform was developed in a two-step procedure that resulted in 22,000 loci that yielded 194,365 single nucleotide polymorphisms when assessed in a diversity set of 192 samples including cultivated and other related wild Vaccinium species. Locus recovery averaged 89.4% in the cultivated polyploid blueberry (northern highbush [NHB], southern highbush [SHB], and rabbiteye [RE]) and on average 88.8% were polymorphic. While recovery of these loci was lower in the other Vacciniumspecies assayed, recovery remained high and ranged between 60.8% and 70.4% depending on the taxonomic distance to the cultivated blueberry targeted in this platform. NHB had the highest mean number of variants per locus at 9.7, followed by RE with 9.1, SHB with 8.5, and a range between 7.7 and 8.5 in other species. As expected, the total number of unique-instate haplotypes exceeded the total number of variants in the domesticated blueberries. Phylogenetic analysis using a subset of the SNPs and haplotypes mostly conformed to known relationships. The platform also offers flexibility about the number of loci, depth of sequencing for accurate dosage calling, loci and haplotype reconstruction from increased fragment length. The impact of four computer input devices (mouse, EZ ball, touch pad, touch screen) for 81 preschoolers (ranging from 34 to 78 months of age) and 43 early childhood educators (mean age was 29 years and 9 months) was examined. Participants played two computer games with 10 trials for each game followed by a survey assessing their preferences for the devices. Performance measures examined both accuracy and time to complete components of the game. Measures of motor and cognitive skill also were examined. Educators performed most effectively and efficiently when using the mouse and the EZ ball, but preferred the mouse. Children's performance varied across the devices, with the mouse and EZ ball yielding the most consistent success. In contrast to the educators, children identified the EZ ball as the easiest to use. Measures of motor skill and cognitive ability only were predictive of children's performance using the mouse.
